XCOM 2 Deploys on PS4 September 6

Just over a year ago, XCOM 2 was announced. To the Firaxis team it was the most exciting day in 2015. We shared the good news with the gaming world that the underdog Game of the Year title (2012’s XCOM: Enemy Unknown) would be receiving a full-fledged, bona fide sequel. It had become a reality because of the incredible support from our growing XCOM community. We wanted to make the players proud again. All was right… well, almost.

XCOM 2 Deploys on PS4 September 6

On that day one year ago, and in interviews thereafter, you may have heard a member of the team say, “XCOM 2 is not coming out for consoles.” Every forum post, passionate tweet, Facebook message, and letter about getting XCOM 2 on console was heard loud and clear. We have diehard console-focused fans who let us know in every way possible they wanted to play the game too. That’s dedication we wouldn’t ignore. So we’re thrilled to finally fulfill one of the game’s top requests: XCOM 2 will be available for PS4 on September 6, 2016 in North America and September 9, 2016 internationally.

To create the sequel our fans deserved, we needed to continue pushing an underrepresented genre with bold design decisions. Improving and innovating the game’s core systems without losing time to implementing new changes across multiple platforms meant we could focus on the top priority: gameplay. We’re incredibly proud of our team and how the game turned out on PC. We know existing XCOM 2 players had a great time with it and we can’t wait to hear what our amazing (and patient) console fans say.

If you were someone so bummed out by the PC-only news that you ignored the coverage of XCOM 2, let’s catch you up on what you’re getting. You play as the Commander of an underground resistance group dedicated to taking back the Earth from its alien occupiers. If you played XCOM: Enemy Unknown or Enemy Within, we’re sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Earth lost the war. This sets up the unique narrative stage that ties directly into the sequel’s new innovative design of stacking massive odds against the player and seeing if you can figure out how to overcome them.

XCOM 2 is a behemoth of a game. From a high-level, our open-ended strategy layer offers up interesting player choices that can only be made with the help of your new flying headquarters. Then, you’ll get your soldiers’ hands dirty in the tactical game’s new procedural maps and gameplay, ensuring an unpredictable setting and challenge every mission. To complement the procedural nature of the game, the visual fidelity has taken leaps and bounds, allowing for dynamic lighting, weather and time of day. And of course, the basis for an XCOM experience is rooted in meaningful, fun challenges and consequences, which are still fully intact (trust me).

Additionally, when we were working on the PC version, we received extra help from our friends at The Workshop. They hopped into the game and started squashing bugs and other issues alongside our team. So it made sense to have The Workshop handle the move from PC to console, and ensure that XCOM is in good hands.

Both of us have been console gamers all our lives, with countless memories from our collective treasured console libraries. The best games have something new to offer, with a little bit of “soul” embedded in the software itself. That soul is a direct result from a team that cares deeply about a project, and puts in extraordinary effort to give you something you, in turn, will love. On behalf of our entire team, it is an honor and pleasure to finally bring XCOM 2 to PlayStation 4 on September 6, 2016 in North America and September 9, 2016 internationally. Good luck, Commander.

  • Great News! I’m a fan of the first game and can’t wait to delve into this come September. Thanks!

  • MelodyofMarshall

YES!!!!! I was hoping for this announcement and love the idea that this might pave the way for the new Civilization 6 game to come to my PS4 too. Great job bringing these titles to the PlayStation Nation!

  • Great news! I couldn’t believe it, when you announced a PC-only sequel. This is more like it. I am looking forward to September 6th.

  • YESSS! Loved EU & EW. I was worried it wouldn’t get ported over. Thank You!

  • Already bought it on PC… Please fix the performance.. I can’t imagine the PS4 version if it comes out in the state the PC version was released.

  • Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!!

Ok enough of the spam but seriously Thank You!!! I cannot play this on my crappy pc so will be looking forward to it coming to PS4. Hope it also comes to other consoles for those that didn’t get it on pc but all i really care about is PS4 :p

  • Hopefully the PS4 version of this is less horrendously buggy than the PS3 version of Enemy Unknown was. That was a relatively solid game turned into one of the worst gaming experiences I’ve ever had by a variety of freezes, crashes, save corruption issues, etc.

  • Impaired_Medic

Awwwwww Yeahhhhh!!!! Super excited about this!!

  • radioactivez0r

Does this mean the PC version will get a patch with controller support?

  • hail_donsee

Fantastic! Another great thing to come this September, along with FFXV of course>

  • Great to hear. I’m working through Enemy Within on the PS3 right now.

  • Looks at wallet and all the other games coming this year with the inclusion of this… Sigghh.

  • Phoenix-Pilote

    Excellent news.

However, I did buy it on steam when you made me believe that it won’t be on console. Otherwise I would have waited.
Can we get a rebate on the ps4 version using the steam game key to prove it ?

  • Hell yeeeeaaaaahhhh!! Believe it or not I’ve not yet taken the plunge from PS3 into the PS4 world and have been caught up in the (what feels like) eternal conflict of do I go PS4 or high end PC? PS4 was where my head is at given the awesome titles out there now but I was genuinely gutted I wouldn’t be able to take the fight to the aliens in XCOM2, having spent so much time on Enemy Unknown and Within with multiple trophy-hunting playthroughs.

This has just made my day – you guys rock!!

  • well AWSOME, i just shelled out $60 for the pc version because i read a article saying it wasn’t being ported to consoles, well i guess they will make another $60 come september, lol

  • Quack-tastic

I was super ****ed about this being PC-only, but decided to wait for either a PS4 port or a $2 Steam price. Looks like they’re getting $60~ after all.

  • Thanks the gods, at last!!!! When will pre-orders go live?

  • I too am hoping the bugs, freezes, & crashes that plagued previous XCOM games do not carry over to a PS4 version.

That said, this is awesome news. XCOM and Civilization are the only major reasons I keep my PS3 out these days so it will be great to
finally have something similar for PS4.

  • Awesome.

  • i was so mad when you first announce xcom 2 as a pc exclusive, but now i had tears of joy when i saw this ps4 trailler :)

I am going to buy it for sure :)

  • PLEASE PLEASE I DON’T KNOW THAT GAME IS BUT IT CAUGHT MY EYE WHEN IT SAID, WE’LL PLAY THIS FOREVER*… YOU KNOW WHAT GAME I KNOW EVERYONE WOULD PLAY FOREVER FOR SURE. CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS 2. FOR PS4. NONE OF THAT FUTURISTIC CRAP! THE REGULAR GAME OUTLINING BUT BETTER GRAPHICS, MORE WEAPONS, BETTER CUSTOMIZATIONS OPTIONS, MORE MAPS, CHARACTER OPTIONS; FEMALE/MALE PICK, WITH THE CUSTOMIZATION OF CLOTHES AND PLAYING STYLE. THAT WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST ONLINE BASED GAMES UNTIL HACKERS AND MODDERS RUINED IT. OMG THIS GAME WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

  • Double dipping and not even a little ashamed! Played into the triple digits on Steam and ready for another mission…

  • TERMINATOR543

I was very disappointed to find out originally that the game was not coming to PS4. This news made my week, Thank You!

  • It seems like X-Com would be perfect for Move/motion controls. Will there be any use of the DS4’s motion sensors for a more effective cursor than the left stick?

can we expect 24-bit/lossless audio so the explosions have a good amount of heft coming out of our home theater systems?

can you go into more detail on “dynamic lighting”? is it real GI? multi-bounce?

I’d love to see last-gen X-Com on PS4 natively, any chance that will happen?

I’d also love to see the original X-Com on Vita — any change you can work with the DotEmu guys to make that happen? :)

  • Will this be available digitally? Would love to preorder it!

  • ONsolidROCK

Wasted $$$ on the PC version that either needed fixing, or that my computer couldn’t play for one reason or another. Was very disappointed as Xcom is one of my top 3 games of all time. I wasn’t sure whether to be disgusted with Steam or Firaxis. But Firaxis just made it right again with this news. Definitely preferred to play it on Console. Way to go.
