PS4 System Software 4.00 Will Feature Folders, UI Refresh, More

Our beta for PS4’s upcoming 4.00 update, codenamed Shingen, rolls out soon for everyone included in the public beta program. If you signed up and were selected, be on the lookout for an email with instructions on how to download.

Whether you’re in the beta or not, we wanted to give everyone a glimpse at some of the new aspects of this system software. We’re refreshing the system UI, adding tools for organization, updating the Quick Menu, and much more.

UI Refresh

We’ve made a lot of adjustments and improvements to PS4’s main user interface. That includes some changes you may notice right away, like new system backgrounds and a revised What’s New tab, to smaller changes like updated popup notifications and redesigned system icons. As a whole, it all adds up to a more refined and easy to use UI. The overall look and feel of the UI remains the same — it just has a fresh coat of paint.

4.00 beta Quick Menu

Quick Menu

As you know, pressing and holding the PS button on your DualShock 4 brings up the Quick Menu. We’ve overhauled this menu to make it faster and easier to use. One big change is that the menu now only covers a portion of the screen, meaning you don’t need to leave gameplay entirely.

We’ve added several new items to the Quick Menu, letting you quickly get info without having to back to the home screen. You can see the online status of your friends, and shortcuts to quickly access your Party, Favorite Groups, Communities, and more. You can also customize the Quick Menu, removing or adding items as you see fit.

4.00 beta SHARE menu

Share Menu

We’ve given a similar overhaul to the Share Menu, which appears once you press the Share button on your DualShock 4. Like the Quick Menu, it only covers a portion of the screen. It will save the last social network you shared video clips or screenshots to, making the process of sharing a screenshot or video a bit faster and more streamlined.

You can also upload longer video clips to Twitter (was 10 seconds, now up to 140 seconds).

4.00 beta Folders

Folders and Library Organization

One of the big requests we get is for more options to organize content on PS4. With this update, we’re adding functionality to create folders on PS4’s content launcher and Library. This will help collect your favorite games and select apps in one place for quick and easy access.

We’re also making some pretty big changes to the Library. We’ve added a new tab called Purchased, which will show all of the content you own — games, applications, demos, and betas you’ve participated in. As a result, the Games and Applications tabs focus on content currently installed on your system. This should help de-clutter your library, and make it faster to find the content you’re looking for.

There are some new sorting tools for your Library as well. You’ll be able to sort content by purchase date or install status, and search for specific games and apps via text input.

Trophy Improvements

This update brings the ability to view the Trophy offline. You’ll see a new “offline mode” option if your system is unable to connect to the network, letting you view your entire Trophy collection without an Internet connection.

We’ve also added a button that will let you view the content of a Hidden Trophy. The Trophy will still be hidden by default, but you can now choose to show the Trophy name and info.

Lastly, we’re changing the icons that show how rare a Trophy is. Instead of four boxes that fill, the icon looks like a pyramid with the ultra-rare Trophies at the top.

4.00 beta User Profile

User Profile

We’ve updated the look of the User Profile, making it easier to see relevant info for a player at-a-glance. For instance, you can now see your Trophy progress compared with another player right from their profile. You can also add a background image to your own profile — perhaps a screenshot you took in one of your favorite games.

The update has even more features that won’t be available in the beta, so stay tuned for additional info on what to expect. We’ll be back with more info on 4.00, including its launch date, in the coming weeks.

  • Can’t wait!

  • As a beta tester this is a great update that is way smoother than ever. I have a 2TB hard drive so the folder option is much appreciated with the amount of games I have.

I have one question though. The new ps4 that’s going to have 4K support all you guys gotta do is make it backwards compatible and Xbox would have no chance. Also with the feature implemented all these other developers don’t have to work on remasters when now they can focus on new IP’s and sequels.

Just some ideas guys have a good day

    • Just to stay relevant, I would say in the update allow you customization for the color on notification. Make the default the original though. Also allow us to set or own wallpaper on the UI. I notice how pricey themes are and they lack some creativity.

Please give us ps theme builder for ps4 like how it was on PS3 that way I can make some on my pc and test them on ps4 or better yet have a community space where everyone can share them. The community was extremely creative with the sound effects and visuals that were on last gen xmb.

  • All these new features but I still cant change my PSN name…

  • How about the old PS3 BluRay display? Or a better predictive keyboard, like the Xperia.

  • Will this fix my ps4 from ejecting disks? ;-;

  • im so excited for this and i hope it works better then the original software

  • I am testing update 4.0 Beta 2. It is HUGE!! The update will make your life way better on PS4. The folder option is a game changer, my home screen only has like 6 icons now and the new themes loom amazing that way too. Quick menu is a great addition and the way library has been changed so i don’t need to see every damn demo, ps plus indie, or betas in my library makes my life alot easier. Really, really can’t stress enough how great this update is, and this would have been welcome even 2 years ago when i got my PS4. Glad Sony hot around to it.

  • Will USB come back to Sony…is it an enhancement to hardware software or performance in general

  • Great features. But please add the ability to import videos to the PS4 system.

  • This is one of those really amazing updates! Juat a suggestion, with the ability to map the controller buttons, why not make it a possibility to have multiple profiles. This would make it easier to select the applicable mapping to the game desired.

  • That folder option is going to be a big help since I have a large game collection.

  • This update looks amazing!!! Not so sure about the profile page though, prefer to have my trophies on top and my avatar to be bigger. Regardless looks to be a VERY promising update.

  • Awesome! Can’t wait for the new update!

  • I really hate the PS4 dashboard. What was wrong with the PS3 XMB? It was easy to navigate and just as easy on the eyes. The PS4 dashboard is cluttered and gets more difficult to navigate as your game library expands…

  • I am hyped for this update.
    Mostly for the quick menu.
I really hope you can make folders for your recordings, screenshots and other stuff, and not only for your games.

  • Finally trophy offline been asking for that since day 1

  • Mmm … a pyramid that shows how rare a trophy is … isn’t this a bit Illuminati ??

  • how about custom background images?

  • i totally agree with alot of ones on here specially the ones aobut turning the system and the controller off having to go into power and then choosing to turn off the ps4 then waiting for it to go off it just is really a big hassle and also it would so much help if there was a folder to store all the demos and trials and betas in so much easier it also would make it lot easier if when u push the ps button to be able to quickly choose what u want to do instead of picking i also think there should be a folder for the messages and invites

  • For starters i don’t like the fact that everytime i go to check my game section i see a bunch of demo’s and apps like amazon that don’t belong in the game category. I also don’t like the fact that i have two versions of the same game(uncharted the nathan drake collection in my library) i have the demo version i played and the one i purchased on the playstation store. I feel the best way to solve my dilemma is to put demos/betas in there own seperate category this will clear up space and make my game library easier to use. I also have a problem with this messaging system i understand the need for group chats if your with close friends and you want to discuss about something important. Its just that these group chats disrupt my gaming experiance because my friends will put like 87 people in the chat just so they can annoy me to play with them when i’m already in the middle of game. I feel you should lower the amount of players in the group chat to a maximum of 10 this way everyone can understand whats going on and leave if their not interested without 20 messages popping up in your notifications before you can leave.

  • Now I’m down to the most important thing I feel needs to be fixed in the update and that’s the trophy system. I understand you guys wanting to keep our achievements secure but you have to raise the percentage for deleting trophies from 0% to 10% This is frustrating because if it turns out you are not happy with the game and you discover your trophy progress is above 0% (and it usually is) you are stuck looking at it for the rest of your life whenever you want to check your gaming progression. Even though my friends don’t necessarily have to see it I do on a daily basis and it disgusts me because I have no interest in ever playing these games ever again in fact there not even mine to begin with. they are my nephews who like an idiot downloaded them to play out of excitement but forgot to log me out of my account. This ruins the opportunity for me to send screenshots of my list of games knowing I have these titles blocking the games I love. Please allow us to delete our trophies that are 10% or less because if there is ever a case where somebody wants to dive back into the game or deleted them by accident they can just earn them all back again in less than a day because they barely scratched the surface of the game.

  • Also another thing i have to add with all the new ways you guys have enhanced the social aspect of gaming the censorship and amount of people moderating what we are saying is pathetic either you allow us to say what we want or you monitor the idiots out their who can’t speak properly and deal with them because i can’t stand all of the ridiculous amount of words we can’t use like sucks, homecoming and the #’s in our psn names can’t be seen its impossible for people to understand what they are saying in communities when everyting is being censored you guys put parental controls on the console for a reason if some irresponsible parents forget to install them for their kids thats their problem not yours

  • Oh and i almost forgot i’ve noticed that on your website and on playstation now you can organize your trophies anyway you want i don’t know if this feature was on the ps3 but its amazing and should be on the ps4 it makes our games look more neat and organized when someone wants to browse what type of games we play or our overall trophy progression in games.

  • External HDD support would be nice I mean Nintendo tendon has it with no need for formatting, PnP read write games and what not

  • would the Apps for our game be put into the folders? instead of cluttering up our main Home screen? I sure hope so….And as far as GT changing?….We all should have thought that one over REALLY REALLY GOOD! Before using a name that would become the bane of the PS community !!!

  • it will help me very much

  • Thank God that they’re finally doing this. I migrated to ps4 from x-box 1 and I was starting to get home sick!

  • Exactly what I’ve been waiting for, it’s sad how excited I am for this update.

  • How do i update my PS4 to the beta version ? Help me please

  • When is the update? I signed up and never got anything.

  • Loving the features can’t wait for hdr update

  • Will there the option too put self made pictures in as a design for the ps4 background?

  • The folders are a great start. The PS4 can almost do all the stuff the PS3 can do, now. Something that’s still missing, however, is uses for the camera other than streaming (which, by the way, is great) Like, what happened to video chatting? The PS Camera is even a 3D cam, so why not 3d video chat for those who have 3d TVs? (I don’t, but you get the picture) And why not a program like Eye Create? While we’re at it, take the filters you can use on Eye Create and use them in chat.

I know the PS3 is pretty much dead at this point, but being able to sort bubbles for Vita, PSP, and PS1 games into folders would be nice, too. I waste a lot of time scrolling down to the folders.

  • just updated the system with 4.0 now every problem there wasnt with the previous firmware is happening now. disc is getting ejected midway with bleeping sound I have never heard before. won’t automatically log in, connecting to psn network takes forever. keeps logging out as if my ps4 has just hit self destruct button with the update.

  • This “Quick menu” is really a great idea, thanks Microsoft to develop it and thanks Sony engineers to copy it with only 3 years of downtime. The folders thing are just something that should have been in the system from day one. Well, better late than never. And it was about time for you guys to show some respect for the players especially after breaking our legs with the new PS Plus pricing.

  • And yet my two biggest peeves still not fixed:

    1. Ability to switch party back and forth from Private to Open without having to start a new party. So frustrating that we can’t toggle this control while the party is going. You can on Xbox!

    2. Ability to QUICKLY toggle back and forth from party chat to game chat. How many times has it cost me a life in a game because I was trying to switch to game or party chat and it’s buried way down in the slow menu settings.

I like the new quick menu… but I don’t even see PARTY on it? Come on, it’s a gaming console first and foremost… players party up… get with it and fix this stuff!

    • @ Wicked_Winnie

Party is an option which you can Customize to add on the Quick Menu.

Just go under Customize and Use the Checkbox to make it active and voila…Party Option Enabled :)

  • I like the idea of folders for games, but why can’t I organize the apps I use all the time like Netflix, Crunchyroll and Youtube? I can organize my games but I’m still stuck having to slog through the TV & Video tab? Seems like a no brainer that you should be able to do both.

  • Please can you guys add a way to change your gamer tag or whatever its called because i got a ps4 on Christmas (when psn was down) and i couldn’t get a name so i thought all the names were taken (i didnt know psn was down at the time) so i was desperate and when psn came back i was stuck with this crap name. I’ll even pay to change it please

  • I need help with the update? Its not letting me install the 4.00 update
