PS4 System Software 4.00 Will Feature Folders, UI Refresh, More

Our beta for PS4’s upcoming 4.00 update, codenamed Shingen, rolls out soon for everyone included in the public beta program. If you signed up and were selected, be on the lookout for an email with instructions on how to download.

Whether you’re in the beta or not, we wanted to give everyone a glimpse at some of the new aspects of this system software. We’re refreshing the system UI, adding tools for organization, updating the Quick Menu, and much more.

UI Refresh

We’ve made a lot of adjustments and improvements to PS4’s main user interface. That includes some changes you may notice right away, like new system backgrounds and a revised What’s New tab, to smaller changes like updated popup notifications and redesigned system icons. As a whole, it all adds up to a more refined and easy to use UI. The overall look and feel of the UI remains the same — it just has a fresh coat of paint.

4.00 beta Quick Menu

Quick Menu

As you know, pressing and holding the PS button on your DualShock 4 brings up the Quick Menu. We’ve overhauled this menu to make it faster and easier to use. One big change is that the menu now only covers a portion of the screen, meaning you don’t need to leave gameplay entirely.

We’ve added several new items to the Quick Menu, letting you quickly get info without having to back to the home screen. You can see the online status of your friends, and shortcuts to quickly access your Party, Favorite Groups, Communities, and more. You can also customize the Quick Menu, removing or adding items as you see fit.

4.00 beta SHARE menu

Share Menu

We’ve given a similar overhaul to the Share Menu, which appears once you press the Share button on your DualShock 4. Like the Quick Menu, it only covers a portion of the screen. It will save the last social network you shared video clips or screenshots to, making the process of sharing a screenshot or video a bit faster and more streamlined.

You can also upload longer video clips to Twitter (was 10 seconds, now up to 140 seconds).

4.00 beta Folders

Folders and Library Organization

One of the big requests we get is for more options to organize content on PS4. With this update, we’re adding functionality to create folders on PS4’s content launcher and Library. This will help collect your favorite games and select apps in one place for quick and easy access.

We’re also making some pretty big changes to the Library. We’ve added a new tab called Purchased, which will show all of the content you own — games, applications, demos, and betas you’ve participated in. As a result, the Games and Applications tabs focus on content currently installed on your system. This should help de-clutter your library, and make it faster to find the content you’re looking for.

There are some new sorting tools for your Library as well. You’ll be able to sort content by purchase date or install status, and search for specific games and apps via text input.

Trophy Improvements

This update brings the ability to view the Trophy offline. You’ll see a new “offline mode” option if your system is unable to connect to the network, letting you view your entire Trophy collection without an Internet connection.

We’ve also added a button that will let you view the content of a Hidden Trophy. The Trophy will still be hidden by default, but you can now choose to show the Trophy name and info.

Lastly, we’re changing the icons that show how rare a Trophy is. Instead of four boxes that fill, the icon looks like a pyramid with the ultra-rare Trophies at the top.

4.00 beta User Profile

User Profile

We’ve updated the look of the User Profile, making it easier to see relevant info for a player at-a-glance. For instance, you can now see your Trophy progress compared with another player right from their profile. You can also add a background image to your own profile — perhaps a screenshot you took in one of your favorite games.

The update has even more features that won’t be available in the beta, so stay tuned for additional info on what to expect. We’ll be back with more info on 4.00, including its launch date, in the coming weeks.

  • Any chance we might be getting any of the following as well?

    – PSN Nickname Change (whether one-time free or paid)
    – Web PS Store Library/Downloads sorting (by platform, by name, by date, etc)
    – Download queue order (telling the console which content to download what first when batch-downloading, like updates and DLC)
    – Installed content management (DLC and Patches, without touching the game itself. PS3 could do it for example)
    – External HDD support (data storage, game installs)
    – Auto-syncing for Trophies (in Rest mode)
    – Hiding home screen items (e.g. TV & Video)

    • – PSN Nickname Change (whether one-time free or paid) if someone wants to pay 150 a pop to change their name i’d say go for it.

    • these are possible features, this is the beta of the 4.0 firmware, i think if the full 4.0 firmware is released these features are included

  • Allow us to put are trophy list in alphabetical order ^_^

    • Or just organize it however we want. Like i want to see games i completed at the top so i won’t forgot about it.

  • Very good update. Now please add custom UI background pictures via usb and the ability to have music, pictures folders from a usb to your hdd like you could on ps3

  • Someone explain to me why they are just now adding the feature to change the background? Last PS. I owned was the PsP and that had the feature already? It’s basically the same UI.

  • I’d love to have an option with which my trophies update automatically upon receiving them. So far I have to go to my trophies after I got some and it starts synching with PS network but this should happen automatically. Could you look into this for a future update?

  • We should be able to change our psn ID’s…

  • The one thing I can think of now is the ability to change usernames. I would happily pay some money to do so if need be. I cannot stand my name.

  • Think this is a great update. As a parent, one thing I wish Sony would address is the parental controls because they don’t work correctly. I’m okay with my kids playing multiplayer star wars battlefront, rocket league, sports games and some other games but others I am not fine with. It would be great to selectively lock which games they can play but not have it go across all profiles. If I set parental controls so they can’t play Battlefield 4 whether online or offline, then it locks myself and them out of Star Wars Battlefront and other games unless you switch the parental controls again. Many of you probably don’t have that concern, but it is something that is constantly an issue in my house because my kids are curious about the games I play.

    • If theyr that young that you need parental controls then don’t let them use the ps unless you are present therefore you can see what they’re playing on, and just put any physical game discs in places they can’t reach. Or you know keep the console for yourself and spend time with your kids in the real world.

    • Really that’s your response? How do you know I don’t spend time with my kids in the “real” world? My kids are 7 and 11 and I coach their hockey teams and spend a lot of time mountain biking and hiking with them during the summers. I’m pretty sure I’m engaged in their lives. I don’t think my kids need parental supervision to play Little Big Planet and I certainly don’t want to sit around and watch them do that. Obviously you have no idea how the parental controls work. If you set them for “teen” or “everyone”, all users including the primary account holder is locked out of any game rated “M”. All I’m saying is that there should be ways to set parental controls by the user and not globally across the machine. Stuff that might be appropriate for my 11 year old might not be appropriate from my 7 year old. Let me be the judge of what I want my kids to be able to access.

    • As a parent i know kids get curious, especually when they see their Dad getting into a game they want to watch and play as well. Games are more violent and has alot more adult language, but we DO NOT USE that kind of laguage in my house (they hear enough in the real world) but my kids know we dont talk like that at home so they do know that profanity is bad. Noticing that my son was interested in the shooting games i was playing i explained to him that “THIS IS JUST A GAME” and its for fun, he doesnt need to try and be like the character he is playing or copy what he sees on TV or video games. “PARENTAL GUIDANCE/CONTROL should start with the parent/parents not Playstation.

  • I JUST WANT TO ADD MUSIC & VIDEO ON MY HARD DRIVE THAT’S ALL SONY!!

  • PS3 and PS4 does support external hard drive but only for music, video files. The external hard drive support that I know that I want featured in a PS4 firmware update is the ability to move games from my main PS4 Hard Drive onto an external hard drive that way I can expand my overall game storage past the 2TB limit without resorting to using the Nyko Data Bank.

  • With over 130 digital games installed on my PS4. The folders are a very welcomed addition. Good work!

  • great changes! Hopefully we’all have the ability to remove stuff like year or two year old demos still showing up in our Library. Also, I constantly have streaming apps show up in Games so hopefully that will help fix this. Great work!

  • don’t screw up the ui because of a minority….

  • OMG this is going to be one hellava update

  • This is a pretty sweet update. Now, when will there be more options for the PS4 camera?
Thats something im waiting on. Im not sure why the PS4 doesn’t have the same option to chat via camera like the PS3.
Maybe in months time, there will be more options for it. :)

  • This update sounds awesome

  • “We’re also making some pretty big changes to the Library. We’ve added a new tab called Purchased, which will show all of the content you own — games, applications, demos, and betas you’ve participated in. ”

I don’t get it… the library ALREADY shows games, applications, demos, betas… all in one big list… we want to be able to select between those categories, because all the alphas, betas, demos and games all together in one big list is too much…

    • The next sentence explains it pretty clearly:

“As a result, the Games and Applications tabs focus on content currently installed on your system. This should help de-clutter your library, and make it faster to find the content you’re looking for.”

So you’ll have Purchased, Games, and Applications tabs. The latter two will only display what is currently installed on your system.

    • @LanerGT : I read that. But if you’re looking to install a game from your library, the “Purchased” tab will still include ALL your stuff.

  • So you’re replacing the PlayStation Dynamic Menu (a UI designed around quickly getting to most recently used items) and replacing it with user customizable folders just because some whiners on the Internet with no design experience couldn’t wrap their head around why the PS4’s UI was designed the way it was?

I guess if you’re already destroying the dedicated console market with this ridiculous idea of a half step upgrade console might as well go all in with ridiculous UI decisions made by a few internet whiners.

    • So, there’s never room for improvement? Any forward progress in UI design is solely due to “whiners”?

    • @LanerGT

That’s not at all what I said. Folders and various sorting options in the Library? Makes perfect sense, maybe something that should have been there on day one.

But mixing folders and recently used applications together in the main launcher menu? That makes absolutely no sense at all. There’s absolutely no reason and shows a fundamental lack of understanding of how the PS4’s UI is designed.

  • With folders coming out, there can be more saved data and possibly more games installed without a deletion: thx sony!

  • PSN ID change.

Or at least changeable Display Name implementation the way Steam does it.

  • Like the changes. What about deleting/resetting trophies? There are multiple games I’d like to replay completely from scratch and Platinum so it would be nice if this was possible.

  • Hopefully this gets rid of the extra apps that people do not download in the video folder

  • Looking forward for PS4 4.00 system software update. Would like to have volume control and A-B repeat feature for bluray and dvds playback on PS4 system since A-B repeat and volume control features already on PS3 system.

  • FOLDERS!

That’s great! It’s all I’ve been waiting for!

  • What about let us delete trophy lists with more than 0%. There really bad games that i dont want on my list after playing them, not to mention glitched and unarchivable trophies. Let us delete no matter if my level is reduced.

    • That is actually exist, u can do it but just by the entire game NOT the DLC. I writed cause I wanna delete all dlc at 0% too..

    • Sorry I read bad MORE THAN 0% . I think that is a problem because anyone can erase ur trophie history and OMG

  • Great job Sony! Looking forward to the new update.

  • That sounds fine but here is what I would like…

    1. Plug and play support for external HDD on both the PS3 and PS4
    2. Removal of the 10% OS reserve on the PS3
    3. Pin sign in to PSN
    4. PS Now be less like Redbox and Netflix and more like iTunes and PS Video
    5. Categories/groups in your download/purchase history
    6. At least digital backwards compatibility on the PS4 with PS3 purchases
    7. 2 step verification for PSN
    8. Cross buy be the norm
    9. Remote play on non-Sony Android phone
    10. The ability to give away digital purchase (yeah I know but I still want it lol)

When the PS4 was announced, I remember Sony saying, based on your purchase history, they will automatically download games to your PS4 that they think you may like for easier purchase. Was that ever implemented? I do not have a PS4. I am still on 7th gen. #backlog #poor

  • Thanks for the hard work.

  • hello all i think ps4 take so long to bring Chat Cam
xbox still one step foward on that and the camera is doing nothing there please add like ps3 chat cam comeone ps4 i know you can doit . for what is the use of this cam doing nothing please upgrade this

  • What about changing psn id because my dad made my psn about 11 years ago as a joke and I don’t want to make a new one cause I’d lose my trophies and save data

  • Morning, can u please add the option to erase the DLC Trophies that is at 0% like we can do with the principal game. I mean this dlc sometimes are irrelevant for us, and it damage our 100% from our game. I know that this is not important for some people bit for others like me IT IS. Thanks.

  • When will be able to have any picture that we want as our background? The PS3 had it.

  • “The update has even more features that won’t be available in the beta, so stay tuned for additional info on what to expect. We’ll be back with more info on 4.00, including its launch date, in the coming weeks.”

This is just for the beta guys, so there’s more to it once the update comes out for everyone.

  • 4 yrs and “folders” is the biggest feature you can add to a firmware upgrade?? Wow.
    Just….wow.

    smh

  • You need to add some actual good games into ps now cause they all suck, add some old call of dutys and red dead redemption and some others

  • Folders! Finally! Thank you Sony!

  • Are there any changes to parental controls? PS4 *needs* to allow per-account parental controls otherwise they are literally useless if you are a parent who games.

  • Okay, this is like all my complain answered, good job sony, this is all I need for ps4 firmware :)

  • Now if they would just allow you to delete games from your trophy list that have higher than 0%, because you might start a game, find you don’t like it, but it’s stuck to your list forever because you popped ONE trophy for doing something insignificant- like even just starting the game!

    • Yes. I have some many games that didn’t like stuck on my trophy list. I don’t even have my PS3 anymore, but all the games I played (and hated) on it are on my trophy/download list.

  • YESSSSSSSSSSS FOLDERS!!! FINALLY! Thank you. Wait did I also see we can add our own background wallpapers too!!! This might be the best update yet!!

  • Still no support for Bluetooth headsets -_-

  • Would love to see them allow us to create our own custom themes…add wallpapers, etc…

  • External harddrive support for game installs, I think should still be added. I have a 2tb and it getting pretty full.

  • Offline Trophies yaaaay. You finally accepting what the ps3 features got carried over to ps4

  • Now if only they’d put in a way to delete just DLC, without having to delete a whole game or its updates, which the PS3 could do.

  • Where is the Bluetooth headset support you shouldn’t have to plug in a stupid dongle to play on a crappy headset

  • Demo or screenshots ?

  • The folder option is going to help a lot of people, but what we really need is a backwards compatibility option.

  • Any info on video chat?
