PlayStation Meeting 2016: Introducing PS4 Pro and the Slimmer, Lighter PS4

More than three and a half years ago, I stood on stage in New York to unveil PlayStation 4, which captured our vision for the future of gaming. That vision placed the gamer at the center of the PlayStation ecosystem and empowered developers to create transformative experiences. This afternoon I returned to New York for another PlayStation Meeting to discuss the evolution of the PlayStation 4 platform and introduce PS4 Pro. This new high-end PS4 will sit alongside the new slimmer, lighter PS4, which we officially unveiled today.

The new standard PS4 is starting to ship to retailers now and will be available by September 15 for a suggested retail price of $299.99 USD ($379.99 CAD), representing great value for gamers who haven’t joined the PS4 community just yet. Our engineering and design teams collaborated to consolidate PS4’s high-performance technology into a smaller, more energy efficient form factor. When comparing the new PS4 model to the current model, we’ve reduced volume by 30 percent, weight by 16 percent, and power consumption by 28 percent. Despite the sleek design, the new model packs all of the same powerful components that have made PS4 the best place to play.

With PlayStation 4 Pro our goal is to deliver innovation in the form of cutting-edge visuals and graphics while in the midst of the PS4’s lifecycle. PS4 Pro, which launches November 10, 2016, for a suggested retail price of $399.99 USD ($499.99 CAD), enhances PS4 games by supporting the latest in imaging technology through 4K resolution and High Dynamic Range (HDR), as well as smoother frame rates. Games that already look extraordinary on PS4 will look richer and more detailed, thanks to the more powerful GPU and faster CPU at the heart of PS4 Pro.

With more pixels, 4K’s higher resolution delivers graphics that are sharper and have greater detail than ever imagined. HDR enables visuals to look much closer to the way your eyes see the real world.

Some developers are updating previously launched PS4 games to add PS4 Pro support, while other developers are building PS4 Pro support into upcoming releases. At launch, you’ll be able to download patches for games – such as Uncharted 4 – which are enhanced when playing on the new console. Future releases that will have PS4 Pro enhancements built-in include Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Mass Effect: Andromeda and Days Gone.

However, even if you own an HDTV that does not support either 4K or HDR, PS4 Pro still provides a number of benefits. All games will run in 1080p resolution, and some will even run in a higher or more stable framerate. If you’re a gamer that wants to be at the forefront of innovation, PS4 Pro is for you.

We also know a lot of our fans watch movies, TV shows, and videos on their PS4, so we’re working with our partners who offer best-in-class streaming services to build new apps for PS4 Pro. Netflix will launch a new app at the launch of PS4 Pro that supports 4K. YouTube is also developing a new 4K-compatible app for PS4 Pro.

But it’s important to note that the choice is yours. Whether you’re playing on PS4 Pro, the new slimmer and lighter PS4, or the PS4 system you bought at launch in 2013, you’ll have access to the same amazing games with the same features and same vibrant community that make PlayStation the best place to play. There won’t be any gameplay features exclusive to PS4 Pro or the standard PS4. In fact, we believe the impact of HDR on gaming and entertainment is so promising that all PlayStation 4 systems – back to the very first console sold in 2013 – are now HDR capable.

It is incredibly important for us, and our developer partners, to maintain one PS4 audience. All PS4 systems are also ready to deliver on the promise of virtual reality with the upcoming launch of PlayStation VR. Whichever system you choose, we’ll continue to give you the exclusive franchises, blockbuster third-party titles, and unique games from creative developers that you’ve come to expect from PlayStation.

I want to take a moment to thank everyone in the PlayStation Nation for the incredibly passionate support around PS4. From day one with PS4, we’ve been driven to create a system tuned to the needs of gamers. PS4 Pro builds on that goal even further, and we can’t wait for you to try it.

  • So it will be 30% less powerful supposedly than the Xbox Scorpio and also doesn’t feature a UHD bluray drive in it as well like the Scorpio. I really don’t understand Sony’s thinking here……

  • My only real question is what is the point of even putting out a ps4 slim? They claim it will replace all the current PS4’s. But it DOESN’T have an digital optical output?!? REALLY?!? How many of us use gaming headphones that use the optical output? Most of the decent Turtle Beach and Astro headsets do. So it’s pretty pointless to even have it out IMHO.

    • and considering the PS4 was half the size of the xbone, it didn’t make sense at all to release a slim version at all.

  • Very disappointed there is no UHD Blu ray support! I spent all this money on this Sony 4K TV and been patiently waiting for this console so I can start watching 4K Blu Rays! I still buy discs and would like to be able to play them. This decision is weird because 4k is the focus. I hope this is changed or I may have to get a $100 cheaper XBox One S, and keep my Original PS4.

  • From the start of the meeting, you could tell Andrew House did not want to be there, he seemed uncomfortable announcing a system that had been sold for the last few weeks already, then the announcement of the ps4 pro, which offered no upgrades at all over the original PS4, except for slightly more powerful GPU, then the show ended with an even more embarrassing ending, PS4 pro comes out Nov. 10th for $399, good night…… NO SPECS or anything, this meeting felt like a last minute put together.

Microsoft, a company to embarrassed to release official sales records of the xbone, was more then happy to brag about the xbone slim and scorpio, with good reason. I guarentee, Sony had already planned the slim model, but had NO plans whatsoever to do a mid cycle upgrade and after MS announced the scorpio, they quickly threw stuff together and put a price on it, scrap the pro and give us the NEO, it sounded cooler then pro did, seriously.

This will be a massive game changer for MS, exclusives will start leaving PS and showing up on xbone, sales for xbone will sky rocket and it will be PS4 with 50 mill units sold and xbone with 90 mill sold, hope Sony fixes this soon.

    • What are you talking about? Rumors of the pro/neo started way before those of the scorpio so this is not a response to microsoft. And the specs are the same as rumored. No exclusives are gonna leave ps that’s not how it works. Yes the pro is underwhelming but just stop spouting nonsense. One thing it has going for it is the fact that it is coming out a year before the scorpio, that’s a good head start.

  • The only thing I really was looking foward to was backwards compatibility. That would be a MASSIVE plus and make ps4 more appealing, especially to the owners of copius amounts of ps3 games. Nostalgia is a powerful thing and lets be honest, most, if not all of us, want that WITHOUT that Ps Now nonsense. I can’t imagine alot of people use it. I wanna play Bioshock and fear. Maybe a little fallout;)
Point is: Backwards Compatibility= Almost certain boom in sales and a happy community.
Cost of manufacture is a thing I know, but the benefits for most of us (I’d like to think) greatly outweigh the cost. Thoughts?

  • Xbox one S is not a superior unit just cause it has a 4k bluray player. It doesn’t support high def sound which is quite surprising, sony was supporting it with ps3. I can’t believe they don’t support Dolby atmos or dts:x very disappointing. I’ll stick with my ps4.

  • So glad with what I’ve read here in this post.Made clear how unnecessary and useless PS4 Pro is/will be.Glad I won’t ever need to change ma PS4…only if it stops working somehow then I oughta get Pro haha what a name lol.

  • Can Sony specify what mm drive bay is going to be used in the Pro? Any possibility we can install a 15mm drive? I really hate having to go through my 2TB drive now and decide what items I am going to delete in order to purchase or install something new. I have 2 Pros preordered and would like to be ready with new drives at launch so info would be appreciated on this matter.

  • Ok well I apologize for double post can’t find mine. Hard drive is it going to have a double drive ability for larger hard drive something? What are the chances of this ending up the only way to get VR working well? Seems to be a concern on both parts to me. I just bought a CUH-1215 and now this. Why not make sense? Upgrade wonderful not a full upgrade questionable. There was no room on 500gb 2tb and that is not Sony’s fault but upgrade the drive please. I never have time to play but when I do I want to play I do not want to have to redownload every game I want to play. I understand about hackers but why can’t they come up with dual drives triple drives? Seems pretty lame. I still can’t find anything other than 1 drive upgradable. There is nothing larger than 2tb that is priced affordably. Really I hate Xbox but they have a solution. So please don’t make me change.

  • I have a 1tb hd in my current ps4, and is fantastic, its faster and more storage. So I don’t know why im gonna waste another $400!!Thats outragous, my pc was way cheaper and has more, including like 4k br,etc. I’m not paying that Just for 4k, and the fact that the pro doesnt have 4k blueray is very sad. My current ps4 is very fun to play on, its just my pc is better and cheaper. Anyways Sony has been getting a little bit greedy since they didn’t allow the new ps3 models to let you play ps2 games and now ps4 can’t play ps3 games (the only way is if you decided to pay for the same game again in the online playstation store), then they got more greedy and came out with the bs Playstation plus, so that they would make money until the next system came out. Which I find interesting because im all ready paying for internet, then sony makes you pay for it too. I have a pc that was cheaper to build than buying a ps4, faster, and I only pay once for internet. I play on my pc way more than any gaming console. The ps4 is definitely not the best place to play. Sony get your **** together please.

  • I got my ps4 back in July of this year the uncharted 4 limited edition and it’s a cool gaming console best one I got right now

  • Hi i got in ps4 2tb hdd internal can i put it on the ps4pro please i need to know cause i got a lot of games download please and thank u

  • My first PS4 broke so I’m looking forward to this and my parents said that I can get the PS4 pro when it comes out only if I get the beat grades in marking period 1 and that’s pretty much my motivation.

  • I am very disappointed that the new pro will not play 4k blu rays! !..that was one of the main reasons I was going to buy one.can’t believe you let the x box one up you.why?..not real happy

    • Please enlighten the class as to how they let the other company “1-up” them? What is sooooo great about it that not having all of its clientele upgrade to a pro is because a few people who do have 4k Blu-ray discs can’t watch them on a VIDEO GAME CONSOLE is being “1-uped” when Sony sees more people investing there will be an appropriate response plus they cannot legally monopolize the video game industry which putting the other out of business due to superiority would happen

  • Wow!!! People are really that butt hurt over it not supporting 4K blueray movies?? I don’t think I’ve ever even watched a movie on my PlayStation and IMO, seeing as how it’s a gaming system, I think they’re more focused on the gaming part of it. An upscaled blue ray movie looks just fine. Hell, even not upscaled and it’s kinda crazy that people are going to go get an Xbox instead so you can watch an already clear movie be a little clearer??? Hilarious

  • I will buy this console. I have a 4k television. To be totally honest, Sony makes smart decisions. PS4 PRO is for competing with the Xbox s. The Scorpio will be competing with the PS5. After all we are talking about Sony. Next year they will announce the PS5 THAT WILL COME OUT IN 2018 and it will blow the Scorpio out of the water. Putting a 4k blu player and actual 4k gaming would kill this! Mark my words, this will happen. PS Pro is exactly what we need right now! ✌

  • Im not a huge gammer freak but i do like to play. Lots of people are talking about the pro not being able to play 4k dvds. I think its not that big of a deal. Theres still not alot of 4k content out just more than there was 6 months ago. Youre buying a gaming console not advd player. But wouldn’t it be really terrible if PS released another console next year! They’re getting really secretive now days. But i had to complain which i don’t i think they could of gave us more storage room since they take quite a bit for updates and storage space.

  • But it has tha same room memory storage 500 GB I wish they would’ve an other 500 more GB of memory if you worked so hard to to all this why in the world you guys didn’t add more MEMORY SPACE ???

  • The reason for not putting a 4k her drive is simple they still want everyone who got a 2013 first run PS4to be able to enjoy the upcoming releases without dropping $400usd. If they put in a 4k her drive game creators would feel obligated to use that format rendering PS4 and PS4 slim useless. Maybe you should adopt a system from the other guys. Would serve as a lesson as their technology is still 2 years ago. Wake up and join the digital age .

  • …and we still don’t get any mention of backwards compatible. I’ve been a loyal PlayStation user, exclusively, from the first day the original console dropped. My next new console system is absolutely NOT going to be a PlayStation. It’ll be awhile before I pick one up because I just sank over $1500 into building a new gaming computer and that is going to meet my needs for some time.

    • Backward compatibility is like not buying a Blu-ray player because it does not support vhs. However you can stream Alot from PSNow and sure maybe not every game but the library is constantly growing and it’s fairly reasonably priced. Things to actually be upset about paying the subscription fee Sony promised not to impose on us to play with our friends. Or that that rate is scheduled to go up upon release of the PS4 slim.

  • The fact that you all cry about a drive that costs 400 dollars as a stand alone player think about the increase in price not only to the console but also the discs you would buy. Personally I’m fine with my digital library that I store on a computer so if you still think Sony made a mistake well they don’t even have the capability to even upscale at that other game company. Have fun playing on a system not geared at a gamer but a target audience of people 5-500 too much ambition not enough steam cause you just simply cannot be everything to everyone. Playstation is committed to the best gaming experience which they have done a good job of you really want to compare then at least say you are going to Alienware that is the company Sony is trying to compete with. The other guys both are almost just a memory like Sega. More people would rather a Samsung gear vr than a system from them.

  • Give us a break , our if we all had the PS3 has lasted for years and now the PS4pro comes out , heck I will wait until my PS4 takes a dump a then think about The Pro unless by then Sony will have a PS5 out ? I have must higher quality from my 4 than I did with my 3 and
don’t find any need to upgrade or whatever the PRO does or maybe SONY had a plan where the original PS4 just doesn’t last that long ?
that wouldn’t surprise me either ! what’s wrong SONY is XBOX yanking your chain ? so far after 2+ years I really like my PS4 and am no hurry to go anywhere to get a $125 credit on it , by the way I put in a 1K GB hard drive and am doing just fine … Thanks , but , No Thanks !

  • I am using Samsung 2tb hd on my ps4, can i use the same hd on the ps4 pro?

  • Will the new slimmer, lighter, more energy efficient PS4 get rid of the extremely irritating noisey hard drive that’s driving me up a wall???

  • I’ve been a PlayStation owner/fan from the beginning of time of Sony’s Creations. The one thing Sony shall do is make a backwards compatibility fixture so one shall enjoy games from all years of creation. I’m mostly concerned with playing PlayStation 3 games on the new PS4 PRO. This would be the best objective yet if Sony let others enjoy the best of game play from beginning to present time. -Tristanbarbee

  • 6 TB I would hope and also that is will be an upgradeable hard drive 2TB is not enough

  • I’ll buy one of these in 3 years or so when 4K support might actually matter with enough market saturation. Until then…don’t care. It’s like the newest iPhone…Hey my camera does 12 jillion megapixels instead of 10 jillion and some dopey 3D stuff…yawn…who cares…I have reached tech saturation for awhile…I started gaming on an Atari 2600 and went from there…updated consoles until recently actually meant something big!

  • I have think about this because Destiny 2 is going to released in 2017 and I don’t know if I have to have the PS4 pro to play it.I still think the PS4 pro sounds aswome, but I just downloaded the 4.0.0 software update and my original PS4 looked so amazing and cool.

  • I was super excited about the new ps4 pro , started buying 4k blu rays , for nothing it seems , shame , was a no brainer to me that it would be compatible.

  • Everyone out there that’s bitching about how much 4K costs is dumb. There are like 10 different huge sales a yeah where some of the time they are more that 50-60%off. I sold my Samsung 4 year old 60 inch for 500. Bought the 65 inch, 4K ultra with 2d to 3D (turns anything into beautiful 3D that doesnt hurt your head, I hate 3D usually but this is different. Amszing SamsungTV of the Year on a huge sale that marked it down from 2400 to 900 plus free home delivery and a mail in rebate of 100 more. So I upgraded, 3 times at least better. The new system may not come with the HDR DVD support but it comes with HDR and a DVD player. Do the math. Playstations arr constantly updating and so are the games. If your looking for a great price for tvs watch PC Richards sales. Best deals over seen

  • 1st I’m unsure what the Pro is. At the beginng it was said the Pro would sit next to the PS4. However, later it states, to paraphrase “Whether you’re playing the PS4 Slim, the original PS4 or the Pro…” That makes it sound like a console. If it’s not what the heck are we getting for 5 hunred? Something that allows better graphics and supports 4K? I don’t need better graphics and I just bought my 1st Smart HDTV so I’m not interested in 4K. I asked a salesperson what 4K does. It looks better. There comes a point when you start paying for things and get diminishing returns. A guy buys a $1000 suit and the next buys a $5000 suit. Is the latter five times better than the former. I don’t think so. How much better can graphics become? Even you can increase them does it make my gaming experience any better? How much are we expected to shell out for a new console where the main benefit is that games look better?

    • I truely agree with you man, i feel your pain, but i replaced my hard drive with a 1 tb, which i had to pay 200 for :(

  • The PS4 has been the younger stupier younger sibling to the PS3. When Sony came out with 4, they kew how much memory an average game would take up and factor in the dlc. So what do we get? I have 7 games and with the dlc almost all my memory is gone. What do I want in an upgraded PS4? 1TB of memory. A freaking browser and the ability to download Adobe. I’m tired of seeing The PS4 does support, Please upgrade your browser and This site requires Adobe. More sites are requiring these things. I can no longer pay something or check onthe status of something. So I’ve had to call and I’ve had to buy a frickin’ tablet. Oh yeah just found this out yesterday, I’d like this hunk o junk to PLAY CDs OMGosh!!! If your upgrade has these things, I’ll buy it. If it just loads faster and looks prettier, I’ll pass. I still don’t know what the heck the Pro does. Ciao, JZ

  • both consoles have great hardware improvements, such as 4k video and more frames in a game for more quality, but the looks of them look like they haven’t been given much thought. and who cares whether its slider or lighter, its a useless improvement.

  • I thought that the new system would be called PS4 Neo when I read an article this summer about the new system release. PS4 Pro is a shock to me, but I can’t wait to play it!

  • @crocop03
Listen pal if you think PS4 is going down a path of making consoles every year look at Xbox! They have announced like three new consoles in the last six months! As for the PC thing goes I’m an occasional PC gamer. (When my PC will allow games to run) But I have started playing on PS4 and love it. I’m glad for once to be playing good games that don’t have to always be windows exclusive. (I have a mac don’t judge too harsh) Is the reason you made an account just to bash on Sony for making consoles? Just so you could brag up how you PC gamers have better games than PS4? Listen pal i do NOT want to start a flamewar here but friend, go somewhere else to bash on the new PlayStation consoles. Maybe go to the cancerous abomination known as the Xbox community and do it.

  • It’s awesome how Sony’s striving to enchant its supporters all around the globe. Kudos!

  • I like my ps4 I dont want this

  • The decision to not include support for 4K UHD Blu-ray is beyond my understanding. Considered the lack of available players on the market in general, this is a very strange move. I prefer the PS-system as my main source of entertainment and am now forced to reconsider getting my hands on the new PS4 Pro system. Having invested in the 4K format the Pro just isn’t that appealing anymore, even though games will be upscaled to 4K. I will be keeping my “Slim” until you meet the demands of the community. I am sure I am not the only one on the fence on this one… Other than that you guys rock. ;) P.S. Does people know that you originally were involved in and share ownership of the Blu-ray format? Makes no sense then to exclude “your” own standard. “Food for thought.” :)
