PS4 Pro: The Ultimate FAQ

PlayStation is introducing a new choice for console gamers with PS4 Pro, a powerful addition to the PS4 family. It’s designed to offer heightened gaming experiences, whether via your existing HDTV or a new 4K TV.

With its increased performance over the standard PS4, PS4 Pro represents a first for PlayStation — and in many ways, for console gaming. We’re excited by this vision, but we know many of you will have questions. That’s why we’ve built our latest Ultimate FAQ below.

This FAQ will serve as a living document, and we’ll continue to add new questions, details, and specifics leading up to launch on November 10 in North America. If you have questions that aren’t addressed, leave them in the comments below and we’ll add ‘em to the list.

In the meantime: it’s time to get to know PS4 Pro!

New questions added Nov. 3, 2017

Q: What type of buttons are on the front of PS4 Pro?
The buttons are mechanical.

Q: Is there anything else I should know if I own both PS VR and PS4 Pro, and a 4K TV?
If you’re playing a normal, non-VR game on your PS4 Pro, PS VR’s Processor Unit will output a 4K signal to a 4K TV — but in the YUV420 format only. The Processor Unit does not support HDR pass-through, so you will need to plug your PS4 Pro directly into your TV (bypassing the Processor Unit) to view HDR content.

Q: Can I use my PS4 Pro as a “second” primary account?
No, you can only choose one PS4 device to be your primary account.

Q: Can I install a new hard drive in my PS4 Pro?
Yes. As with both models of the standard PS4, you can replace PS4 Pro’s stock 1TB, 5400RPM hard drive relatively quickly and easily using just a Phillips head screwdriver. You will need to select a 2.5’’ (laptop PC sized) hard drive that is no more than 9.5mm thick.

Q: Are there any other changes to PS4 Pro’s hard drive interface?
Yes, PS4 Pro supports the faster SATA-III specification.

Q: Do 4K TVs suffer from increased input lag?
Not necessarily, but the phenomenon known as “input latency” or “input lag” may be an important consideration if you are considering buying a new TV to be used with gaming. The amount of latency differs by TV.

Many TVs feature a “Game Mode” or the like in order to reduce this latency as much as possible, but this performance can vary (e.g. by deactivating special features like HDR). If possible, try to test out a new TV before buying it, connecting your PS4 or PS4 Pro to get a sense of its overall gaming performance. In-depth professional reviews or user reviews can also be valuable.

Q: Can I use an external HDD with PS4 Pro?
As with the standard PS4, PS4 Pro does not support external HDDs for storing game files, but you can use it for storing a system backup, media storage, or save files.

Q: Does PS4 Pro support rendering in full, native 4K?
Yes. While PS4 Pro supports outputting a native 4K signal, many developers are leveraging powerful rendering technologies including a process called “checkerboard rendering” to best balance the heightened clarity of a native 4K signal with other rich graphical features and a smooth performance profile.

PS4 Pro: Basic Questions

Q: What is PS4 Pro?
PS4 Pro is a high-end version of PS4 that is capable of outputting 4K graphics, HDR support, smoother and more stable framerates, and 4K video streaming. Upon its launch, PS4 Pro will make supported PS4 games look better and run more smoothly, while giving developers an upgraded toolset to create even richer, more detailed game worlds. How these powerful new tools are used is up to individual developers and the experience they are creating. You may have seen some of these examples during PlayStation Meeting 2016.

It’s important to note that PS4 Pro is not another generation of console. It won’t make your current PS4 games obsolete, and it won’t split the PS4 player base. PS4 Pro is very much a part of the PS4 family.

Q: When will PS4 Pro be available, where, and for how much?
PS4 Pro will launch in the US and Canada on November 10 for a suggested retail price of $399.99 USD ($499.99 CAD).

Q: Will PS4 Pro have separate or exclusive games?
There will not be any PS4 Pro-exclusive games. Because PS4 Pro and the standard PS4 are members of the same family, both systems will be fully compatible with all past, present, and future PS4 titles, including PlayStation VR. All PS4 games are PS4 Pro games, and vice-versa.

Following PS4 Pro’s launch on November 10 in North America, virtually all new PS4 game releases moving forward will be able to take advantage of PS4 Pro capabilities on day one, or in some cases shortly after launch via a downloadable update. Some titles previously released will be updated to take advantage of PS4 Pro features, including Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, The Last of Us Remastered, Infamous Second Son First Light, Shadow of Mordor, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and more.

Q: Will all PS4 games be compatible with PS4 Pro?
Yes, all existing PS4 games are fully compatible with PS4 Pro. Developers are able to add PS4 Pro enhancements to previously released PS4 games via a downloadable update if they choose to.

Q: Will I need to pay to update my existing PS4 game with new PS4 Pro features?

A: While nothing specifically prevents publishers and developers from this, we don’t anticipate it at this time. Software updates enabling PS4 Pro features on any existing first-party title (such as inFamous First Light or Uncharted 4) will be free.

Q: Will SIE continue to sell and support the standard PS4?
Yes. PS4 Pro is an evolution of the PS4 generation platform, which will continue to include the standard PS4 system. PS4 Pro was designed for gamers who want to be at the forefront of gaming innovation. Whether you decide to purchase the new system or continue playing on the standard PS4 system, you’ll enjoy the same games that make PlayStation the best place to play.

Q: Will PS4 Pro require a 4K TV?
No. PS4 Pro can display much higher resolutions than the standard PS4 when using a 4K TV. But if you own an HDTV (720p, 1080i, 1080p), PS4 Pro can still improve your gaming experience.

Q: What benefits does PS4 Pro provide when played on a non-4K HDTV?
PS4 Pro offers benefits even if you play on a HDTV that isn’t 4K. Depending on how the developer chooses to use the increased processing power, games with PS4 Pro support are able to render higher or more consistent framerates, increased environmental and character model detail, improved overall visual quality, and other related visual enhancements. For a look at how games are using the power of PS4 Pro, watch some of the first game footage on our YouTube page.

Additionally, PS4 games that render below native 1080p (maximum quality for HD TVs) on the standard PS4 can be elevated to render at full native 1080p on an HDTV.

See below for a chart detailing how PS4 Pro will display based on different TV types.

4K content 2K or less than 1080p content
2K TV Optimized to 1080p If less than 1080p,
upscale to 1080p
4K TV If 4K (2160p), display as is Upscale to 4K (2160p)
4K/HDR TV If 4K (2160p), display as is
If content is HDR supported, display in HDR
Upscale to 4K (2160p)
If content is HDR supported, display in HDR

Q: What resolutions does PS4 Pro support?
On 4K TVs, games are capable of running at up to 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels, also known as “2160p”) resolution. On HDTVs, games will run at 1080p.

Q: Will PS4 Pro be compatible with my existing PS4 downloaded games, saved data, and PlayStation Network Friend lists?
Yes. PS4 Pro exists in the same digital ecosystem as the standard PS4 in all regards; two PS4 console systems, one PlayStation Network, one PS4 community. This means you can start playing a game on your PS4 Pro, upload the saved data to online storage using PS Plus (sold separately), and pick up your progress on a standard PS4 in another room. It also means that all content and saved data that you already own on PS4 are fully compatible with PS4 Pro on day one.

Q: What if I already own a standard PS4? Is there an easy way to transfer my games, saved data, and Share captured content from a standard PS4 to PS4 Pro?
Yes. You will be able to copy your games, saved data, captured videos and screenshots, system settings, and other content from a standard PS4 to PS4 Pro using a standard Ethernet cable. This process will also work from standard PS4 to standard PS4, PS4 Pro to standard PS4, and PS4 Pro to PS4 Pro provided that both units have system software update 4.00 or higher installed, and the same PSN account is signed into both systems.

Alternatively, you can log-into PSN with your PS4 Pro, access your games and content library, and re-download your previously purchased games and content. Of course, your saved data in online storage will transfer as well.

Q: Will the PS4 Pro system introduce any improvements to DUALSHOCK 4?
The latest version of DUALSHOCK 4 will be included with PS4 Pro, as well as the new slimmer standard PS4. But it does not introduce any significant new functionality. The new DUALSHOCK 4 allows the light from the light bar to emit on the touch pad, making a new luminous line that illuminates in the same color as that of the light bar. It also supports USB communication in addition to Bluetooth communication. Existing DUALSHOCK 4 controllers going back to the launch of PS4 are fully supported on PS4 Pro; the updated DUALSHOCK 4 will, in turn, be fully supported by every PS4 model.

PS4 Pro: Technical Specifications

Q: How does PS4 Pro compare to the standard PS4?
PS4 Pro is significantly more powerful than the standard PS4 model. PS4 Pro’s advanced graphics processor unit incorporates many features from AMD’s latest “Polaris” architecture, as well as some fully custom hardware innovations, and is considerably more powerful than the GPU included in the standard PS4.

All in all, this increase in processing power enables developers to tap into far more demanding visual features for PS4 Pro owners, including smoother or more stable framerates, support for 4K rendering, advanced graphics features, and more.

Q: What video output settings does PS4 Pro support?
At launch, PS4 Pro supports all of the HD video output settings found on the standard PS4. Notably, PS4 Pro introduces 4K output, with settings for both 2160p YUV420 and 2160p RGB (recommended if your TV supports it) at up to 60 frames per second when using a supported 4K TV and Premium High Speed HDMI Cable.

Q: Does PS4 Pro support High Dynamic Range (HDR)?
Yes, PS4 Pro is fully compatible with the HDR10 specification at launch. HDR10 is a widely supported HDR format embraced by major entertainment companies.

Q: What is HDR?
High Dynamic Range, or HDR, is an emerging display standard that allows for massively increased color depth and greater contrast compared to Standard Dynamic Range, the decades-old specification currently employed by traditional HDTVs. In general, HDR-enabled content played on an HDR-compatible TV produces a noticeably fuller, richer image, that’s closer to what the eye naturally sees. That means much deeper black levels that retain finer details; brighter, more dazzling highlights; and a much wider color spectrum than is possible on older HDTV technology.

It’s actually impossible to demonstrate the true benefits of HDR technology here because you need an HDR-enabled screen and content to experience it. You can, however, watch this video from Sony that shows some simulated before-and-after scenes.

Q: Will PS4 Pro include support for Dolby Vision HDR?
There are currently no plans to support Dolby Vision.

Q: Does PS4 Pro require any specialized equipment?
Only if you want to experience 4K and HDR. Otherwise, no. Like the standard PS4, PS4 Pro fully supports existing HD TVs (720p / 1080i / 1080p). PS4 Pro can also output a 4K signal on supported 4K TVs when using a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable (one will be included with PS4 Pro). To enjoy HDR features, you’ll need an HDTV that’s compatible with the HDR10 format, and HDR10-enabled games or content.

Q: Outside of higher gaming performance, 4K TV features, and support for 4K video streaming, are there any other benefits to PS4 Pro?
Yes. PS4 Pro will come standard with a 1TB HDD, faster Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac), and a third USB 3.1 Gen.1 port on the rear of the unit. PS4 Pro’s more powerful hardware can also benefit PlayStation VR games, enhance streaming features such as Share Play and Remote Play, and enable higher resolution output for media captured using the Share button.

In most other ways, PS4 Pro will be very similar to the standard PS4. This includes the user interface and functionality.

Q: Why do I need a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable for using PS4 Pro on my 4K TV?
For maximum quality, you’ll need a PS4 Pro system, a 4K TV with a Premium HDMI input port (often marked in blue), and a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable. Users can of course use the HDMI Cable is included with PS4 Pro, but those who need to purchase a longer cable should remember to get one that meets the Premium High Speed HDMI spec.

The newer Premium High Speed HDMI format can display a 4K signal at up to 60 frames per second (60Hz). When using older High Speed HDMI Cables, users may experience issues such as flickering TV screens or images being displayed incorrectly.

Q: Is there anything else I need to know about PS4 Pro support on my 4K TV?
Given that 4K display standards and HDR features are still cutting edge, we recommend that you carefully consult your 4K TV’s manual and other reference materials to fully understand its capabilities.

Q: Will PS4 Pro support PlayStation VR?
PS4 Pro will fully support PlayStation VR just like the standard PS4. It’s important to note that PlayStation VR’s integrated display tops out at 1920 x 1080; it does not support 4K output. Also, the PS VR headset does not support HDR features.

That said, PS4 Pro’s upgraded processing power will give VR developers the ability to enhance their experiences with higher quality graphics, smoother or more stable framerates, and visual improvements in supported games. Developers can also choose to add PS4 Pro features to PS VR games post launch via a downloadable update.

Q: Which PS VR games will support PS4 Pro features?
As neither PS VR nor PS4 Pro has launched at the time of publication, we’ll wait until closer to PS4 Pro’s launch to begin confirming these titles.

4K Entertainment

Q: Does PS4 Pro support Ultra 4K Blu-ray Discs?
No, PS4 Pro’s internal Blu-ray drive does not support the new Ultra 4K Blu-ray Disc format. It supports the same Blu-ray Disc specs as the standard PS4. The Blu-ray Disc Player application, however, will support high-quality upscaling of DVD and Blu-ray Disc content.

Q: What 4K entertainment options will PS4 Pro support?
4K streaming apps for Netflix and YouTube are in development. Though 4K streaming is still in its early days, other services are likely to offer 4K video content in the future as well.

Q: Will there be any 4K PlayStation Store movies or TV shows?
There are no plans for this at PS4 Pro’s launch, but the PlayStation Network team is looking into it.

Other Questions

Q: How large is PS4 Pro, physically?
PS4 Pro is slightly larger than the original PS4 model introduced in 2013, and will measure approximately 295×55×327 mm (width × height × length).

Q: Will PS4 Pro owners have a performance advantage in online games when competing against standard PS4 players?
Generally, no. Playtesting and balancing is up to each game developer, and while it’s true that PS4 Pro’s more powerful hardware can drive smoother or more stable frame rates in supported titles, developers have many tools and processes they can use to prevent imbalances.

Q: Will there be any changes to Remote Play or Share Play with PS4 Pro?
Yes, PS4 Pro’s increased processing power can offer significant streaming benefits if the internet bandwidth is fast enough. Remote Play users on PC, Mac, or Xperia will be able to stream gameplay from a PS4 Pro system at up to 1080p. Share Play users on a standard PS4 or PS4 Pro will also be able to stream gameplay from a PS4 Pro system at up to 1080p.

With both Remote Play and Share Play, PS4 Pro’s adaptive streaming technology will attempt to optimize streaming quality to make the most of available internet bandwidth. For the best experience, we recommend a 15Mbps or higher connection and using a wired Ethernet connection (not Wi-Fi) whenever possible.

Q: Will the Share button capture higher quality game content with PS4 Pro games?
When playing a game with PS4 Pro features, using DUALSHOCK 4’s Share button will generate higher resolution gameplay clips and screenshots compared to the standard PS4. Specifics will vary by game, but some games will support full 1080p video capture, and screenshots at up to 3840 x 2160 (4K) pixels.

Q: Will I be able to Broadcast my gameplay at higher settings?
Yes. At launch, you will be able to broadcast a YouTube stream at as high as 1080p and 60 frames per second.

Q: Are Sony’s new 4K TVs a good fit for PS4 Pro?
While we won’t provide a specific recommendation for PS4 Pro at this time, Sony has a long history of designing TVs with advanced technology, and that reputation has extended to the 4K TV realm.

Q: What size 4K TV should I get?
We can’t give an official recommendation on TV size due to variables in room size, seating distance, and media types. 4K games and movies can feature up to four times the total resolution of a 1080p signal, so to take full advantage of 4K’s greatly increased fidelity, you’ll want a 4K TV that’s big enough to show it off comfortably.

Unofficially, the staff of PlayStation.Blog has observed good results in average living rooms with 4K TVs sized 60’’ and up. If you’re in the market for a new 4K TV for PS4 Pro, we strongly recommend selecting a model with HDR10 compatibility, which will enable increased image vividness and contrast in HDR10-enabled games and movies.

Q: If I’m using PS4 Pro on a 4K TV, and I’m playing a PS4 game without PS4 Pro features. Will it still output in 4K?
Yes, older PS4 games without dedicated PS4 Pro features will output at 4K when played on PS4 Pro and a supported 4K TV using a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable. You will not, however, see any visual benefits without support for PS4 Pro features.

  • I don’t have a 4K tv, so I really don’t see the point of this. I just want my OG PS4 disc drive to stop randomly ejecting my discs, so I’m picking up the PS4 Slim next week and sticking with that until I buy a better/cheaper 4K tv in a year or two. By then the PS5 will be announced anyway, and be a true 4K gaming machine.

Also, even with a 4K tv, it’s pretty dumb to NOT have included a 4K Ultra Blu Ray player drive, as the Xbox One S has this already. Huge oversight by Sony.

Can the PS4 Pro 1tb HDD be removed and upgraded? My current PS4 has a 2tb HDD in it, and if I did upgrade could I pop that 2tb easily into the PS4 Pro from the start? Could then use the 1tb as external Xbox One storage.

  • “It’s important to note that PS4 Pro is not another generation of console. It won’t make your current PS4 games obsolete, and it won’t split the PS4 player base. PS4 Pro is very much a part of the PS4 family.”

Okay, why no love for Vita. The PS4 does not “recognize” the vita.

  • Will I be able to install my 2TB HDD from my current PS4 into a new PS4 Pro?

  • Those who have OGPS4 like me, can it be possible to just change the hard drive to PS4 Pro and get on with it?

Do we have to exchange files, saves via ethernet cable in between the two (PS4 and PS4 Pro) consoles?

I already changed my hard drive to a 2,5′ Samsung 2TB and don’t wanna let go of it… /or don’t wanna install everything incl. patches all over again. :/ :)

    • Google if it’s possible to move a hd from one ps4 to another at the moment. If it isn’t then it will be the same

  • I currently have a 2TB HDD in my PS4, which I would want to put into a PS4 Pro if I were to buy one. But I’m having a tough time figuring out how I would transfer the information without having to redownload my entire library, which would be a severe deterrent for me to upgrade. Is there a way to somehow swap the drives without needing to redownload everything?

    • exactly what my question is too……

    • Looking around, I think I’ve found a general workaround to the issue, although it’s not ideal.

      1) Remove PS4 Pro HDD and put it into an external enclosure.
      2) Use that enclosure to backup my current vanilla PS4 (after removing enough stuff to get it to fit on to a 1TB drive).
      3) Take out my 2TB drive from the vanilla PS4 and install it in the new Pro.
      4) Let the PS4 Pro initialize the 2TB drive.
      5) Use the enclosed 1TB drive to restore the PS4 Pro.

    • hmmmmm i think i’ll just stick with my ps4

  • I utterly cannot believe the epic failure Sony is committing right now by not including a 4k Blu-ray drive in their machine. It obviously won’t impact cost cause xboxone s has it included at a lower price ($300). I have been purchasing 4k Blu-rays in anticipation that the Pro would include a 4k Blu-ray drive. I also purchased a Sony XBR55X930D with HDR10 support, all I need was the last missing piece which would have been the PRO but now it seems like I’m going to need an extra unnecessary (imo) box to play 4k Blu-rays when you guys could have just included it in your so called 4k compatible machine. Also please don’t tell this bs about games first when you guys offer your own TV service called PlayStation Vue which essentially makes your box a gaming multimedia machine. I seriously hope someone at Sony reads this comment shows it to whoever makes decisions on this matter and seriously reconsiders putting a 4k Blu-ray drive in the PRO at least or make an additional one that includes it for crying out loud. I predict that your competitor will sell better for this reason alone.

  • Have the acoustics been improved in the PS4 Pro over the original PS4? The PS4 can sound like a hair dryer, especially when things get hectic. Will the PS4 Pro be quieter when playing games and, more importantly, silent in not gaming use (ie on the dashboard, using media/video apps, etc, when you really want it to be silent). Thanks

    • Now this is a valid question! I got my PS4 day one and can’t even keep it in the entertainment center like my xb1 and Wii U because it will overheat and that loud fan comes on. I have to sit it outside and behind the TV so it can breathe. Hopefully this next more powerful iteration of the PS4 addresses that buy running cooler and quieter.

  • No 4k bluray ??? Sony has to do something about this, otherwise switching to pc gaming.
    Very dissapointed!!!!!!!!!

  • If I own a ps4 and a ps4 Pro, and I purchase x digital game, will I be able to play at the same time on both?

    • Probably not unless you sign out otherwise it’ll kick you offline. It does for me when I log into ps3, it logs me out of ps4

    • What I mean is giving my ps4 to my brother who’ll be logged in his account and be able to play with him from my Pro with my account.
Both ps4 are my main console.
Since they’re two different “families” I suppose you should be able to do this.

    • No (in terms of what you are saying)you will have to log into the one you are giving him and set as primary.

Then on yours you log in and you have the games, but you need to be online at all times to access content, he can be on his own account. Then you can play against him.

But technically he has you as the main and him as a main or secondary and yours is you as a secondary.

    • Yes I think it counted a a different system so two pro and two ps4 standard on master and secondary account for each secondary always on line though

  • can I use PS4 Pro with Asus PG27AQ 4k it had 10-bit color not sure 10-bit color and HDR 10

  • is there going to be a program where i can upgrade my current PS4 to the PS4 pro?

  • Will it be available in white and how soon?

  • I have a PS3 and a PS4 still connected to my account. When I get the PS4 Pro will I have to remove one from account to make it a home console? I would like to have all 3 as home consoles if possible. I’m not ready to give up my PS Plus library of games for the PS3 and I would like to have 2 PS4s to be able to play online games with my son.

  • Can I finally use external storage for games? I know I’m weird for keeping every game installed but I would love to not play the what should I delete next game.

    • @Shin_Andrew666 I know right. I have the nyko data bank with a 4tb drive. If I get the PS4 pro I’m screwed. I do have a 2tb I can use but that is still not enough for me. Since my 4tb drive is already at 2tb full or half empty.

  • The only way this makes sense is if my ps4 stopped working. This seems planned. If I originally purchased an xbox one i might consider it, but already owning a ps4 and buying a pro seems like a waste.

  • I’m still in shock there us no 4K Blu Ray playback. I think this is a big mistake especially since the cheaper Xbone S has it. For Sony a company that partially invented blu ray to begin with then to leave it out of a 4K system is just strange. If you are going to put out a so called 4K system then it should play back all 4K formats. Personally I think they did it to be cheap, 4K blu ray drive cost more than standard.

  • So no more slowing my speeds down correct?

  • just want to say something on many comments here regarding the comparisons against the S, regarding the Drive….yes it’s disappointing , but I get it, cost, and competing with there own media section who make stand alone 4K drives…this is a gaming console after all.
But the big miss for me when some of you guys are saying about the S, are you missing the fact this pro is double the power…because you all seem concentrated on the drive.
Ok if your a movie buff, or don’t own a 4K TV, then yup, maybe the pro is a no go, but if you own a 4K TV, and going to get VR, then the pro makes sense.
I have preordered, as I have a 4K TV, I think one thing here that can be picked up on also here, is the fact that A.House, said the words, “something the gaming community didn’t think was possible in 2016”, giving the very big impression the pro does true 4K gaming, were now the dust has settled its no more than upscaling as all these latest consoles are still only able to do, and that for me is we’re the whole problem lies…there is still to much confusion for the everyday market, and IMO, needs clarifying way more, than chatting about, High Dynamic, Ranges, and Flops…..
The million dollar question however, is FF to E3 2017..
    Toz

    • “Double the power…” Based on what specs? Oh right. Sony provided none.

So, for current AAA games that are usually locked to 30fps anyway, all that extra “power” will do absolutely nothing to performance. And, since 4k/60fps gaming just is not possible for $400 in 2016, what we have left is a hardware-based upscaling solution.

So unless you have a 4k TV, there is literally no reason to get this. And if you do have a 4k TV, well then the Xbox One S is simply a better value product with UHD BD functionality.

    • Only thing I can say is watch the demos in actual 4K if you can the texture quality is way better and very close to actual 4K can barely tell the difference on deus ex from 4K on my PC except frame rate

  • Looks ugly as hell. Still buying it though. :)

  • Will PlayStation Vue stream at a higher output than 720?
Also, will I be able to stream Vue on the pro console and my standard Ps4 at the same time or will we still face that restriction?

    • That’s a good question…. but the answer is most certainly no. This was disappointing to me when Vue came out. I was hoping that it would be 1080p.

The problem is that alot of channels broadcast in 720p still , including the mighty ESPN !!! If your cable box says 1080 like mine does, its being up-scaled by the cable box. Nice trick by my cable provider.

  • Does anyone know if the PS4 Pro will support 1440P? I play on PS4 and PC and have a great 1440P monitor for PC games and would love for the PS4 Pro to work in 1440P instead of just 1080P and 4k.

  • Thanks for this FAQ, this is very helpful.

Will the PS4 Pro support more than 4 controllers?

  • Will the ps4 pro have a saperated hdmi out port for audio? I run my audio trough my reciever but will have to connect the ps4 pro directly to my 4k tv, that would mean stereo sound instead of 5.1 or 7.1. It would be unexaptable for me to secrifice 1 of the 2, either best sound or best picture.

    • It looks like the Pro still has the optical digital audio output. Rumor was that it was going to be removed from the new PS4s.

  • I hope the negative feedback about the internal Blu-ray drive not supporting the new Ultra 4K Blu-ray Disc format makes them do a 180 degree turn. Just like Microsoft did with the Xbox One launch at E3.

  • Will my PS4 hard drive be able to be switched to the pro? I upgraded my ps4 a while back to a 2tb and I’m wondering if I can just input my old hard drive into my new ps4 pro?

  • It seems everyone is thinking the same thing regarding the lack of 4k BluRay. This was a day 1 purchase for me but now very likely not. I was looking at a new Sony 4k TV and a PS4Pro. When I heard about lack of 4k Bluray I changed my mind. I would love to be at the boardroom table when this was discussed in development to have heard their reasoning. I think this will push sales up majorly for Microsoft though.

    • Same for me. I was all set to preorder this thing. Now it’s just not a compelling value-add, particularly with the Xbone S out there.

  • If the system is not going to support 4K Blu-ray’s I’m not putting my money into this, sorry Sony but you really screwed this up.

  • 2 Questions!

    1. What about party chat? Will I be able to party chat with my friends that have the older original ps4 version? Because I won’t be upgrading if I can’t talk with my friends online.

And 2. Does this mean that small but important things will still be unheard with this new ps4 pro coming out? Such as party chat volumes being too loud for the game.

ie. I have bought the ps4 gold wireless stereo headset and the “sound/chat” volume controls control the sound sfx IN GAME. Leaving the party chat and game volume to be controlled from the “vol” volume controls. Hearing my friends every breath in party chat and hearing the footsteps in a game shouldn’t be in the same category.
The [adjust audio mix] bar in [party settings] being all the way left, which is supposed to favour non-part audio, doesn’t help either! Needs fixed?

    #SmallButImportant

    • YES, did you read the FAQs, PS4 Pro has everything that regular PS4 has + MORE POWER. So it can do everything PS4 does only faster and better.

    • In your party chat settings on the PS4 while in a party, change the volume slider to more of the game chat side than the party chat side. That’ll fix your issue.

    • Non-party audio has all the favour. The bar is all the way to the left. So is a bug that it isn’t working for me?

  • Hope Sony ,let us swap our old PS4 HDD/SSHD/SSD into New PS4 pro
I have a lot of digital game and I cant not download them all again
    My internet only 3mbps

    • @Anera Sony said you can Transfer all your data using Ethernet Cable as long as your PS4 units have 4.0 version of the Software.

Did you read the FAQs? Guess not.

  • PlayStation vita intergration. How will it be affected?

  • I think this is an awesome upgrade for PS4. Not sure why everyone is getting upset about lack of 4K Blu Ray Drive. Yes I do get that PS4 is not only a GAME CONSOLE, but it is MAINLY a GAME CONSOLE (Microsoft tried to sell everyone on XBOX as a media device and look how many gamers were upset about it, no SONY is doing exactly opposite and people are angry lol) Sony is keeping the costs low while keeping the parity of PS4 and PS4 Pro as close as possible so Developers are not alienated either. Once the market for 4K TVs takes off, and more titles become available on 4K then Playstation 5 will get your 4K Blu Ray Drive.

Anyway PS4 is definitely worthy upgrade, no need for 4K TV to see many of the benefits. Once the price and time is right then 4K TV upgrad will be imminent in my household.

    • Microsoft doesn’t seem to have the same “keeping costs low” concerns that your argument suggests. Objectively speaking, the Xbone S is the better consumer value-add than the PS4 Pro.

And you are wrong: There is literally reason to have this glorified upscaler if you don’t also have a 4k TV to go with it.

    • Edit: “There is literally NO reason to have this glorified upscaler if you don’t also have a 4k TV to go with it.”

    • Yes I did read but New PS4 Pro only 1tb I have 2tb it not going to fit on 1tb

  • I have a 4K tv an Xbox one s gaming pc with 1080gtx and I watched the demos in actual 4K and there was a huge difference it looked amazing especially Horizion you can notice the higher texture quality and smother frame rate I preorder mine already standard ps4 still trades in for $200 a little disappointed about the UHD Bluray but never really used it on ps4

  • This is the PS4 they should have released instead of the “Beta” 1 that we’re using. Typical money grab.

  • $400 for another console in the same generation? Nah, but thanks for convincing me to ascend to PCMasterRace

  • So if you get a pro you can still play with all the same people even if they still only have the standard

  • Sony please update the blue-ray drive for the PS4 PRO to a 4k bluray drive, this is not good for your new Hardware.

  • Yeah, no 4K Blu-Ray is a deal-breaker.

  • To be an entertainment machine. It needs to have a 4k blu ray player. I have a 4k tv no 4k blu ray player and now I have zero reason to buy this. I can watch 4k youtube and netflix on my tv already since it’s a smart tv. I’m seriously considering getting an xbox one s. Playstation failed mission failed people are more upset about this than the lack of a headphone jack on the iPhone 7

  • If I transfer my PS4 to a PS4 Pro using ethernet, will my copy of P.T. transfer over as well? I’m worried about this and also don’t want to be locked into my OG PS4 for its life

  • I almost pre-ordered a Pro last night. Decided I would sleep on it. Glad I did. No UHD BluRay support? Really? That’s insane. I guess I should say “Thanks” because it makes my decision that much easier. Going to switch to PC gaming and an Oculus, instead of a PS4 Pro and PSVR. Thanks Sony!!

  • Everyone here is complaining about the lack of a built in 4k blu ray movie player. Honestly, I use my Playstation for games. I’m not a big movie person. There are a few exceptions but going to the theater to see them was far more exciting than watching them at home. Also, people keep saying that the pro doesn’t support native 4k when they clearly state here that it will. 4k TVs are getting cheaper and the pro’s processing abilities are enticing. The big problem for me right now is finding time to enjoy my game library.

Lastly, to everyone who keeps saying they’re going to get an xbox: Naughty Dog.

    • Honestly, I use my Playstation for media. I don’t play games much anymore. Uncharted and a few others, that’s about it.

The lack of 4k bluray drive is a huge dud.

They hype this thing with all the 4k talk…. HDR is amazing!!!!! Yes, we know it is…. so why not include the single best source of HDR content??? ( 4k UHD bluray discs )

  • Seems like Sony is resting on their Laurels… I can’t believe they didn’t include 4K BD support on the new console when Xbox One S and Scorpio will do!

I switched over to Xbox One like 4 months ago, and i’m really happy with, I guess i’ll stick to Xbox and i’ll be buying Scorpio as after seeing this new PS4 model all i can say is i have no need for PS4 atm.

Here’s hoping Xbox One catches up with PS4 so Sony might move their lazzy asses and try to get better cause this PS4 “Pro” is pretty lame.

  • Will the pro upscale Blu Ray to 4K?

  • Ok. This seems to have been answered, but I would like it spelled out for me very clearly.

It’s widely known that PSVR games must maintain at minimum 60 FPS. Going off of that: could a game that could not achieve steady 60 FPS on the PS4, but could achieve that 60 FPS on PS4Pro, get a PS4Pro exclusive VR mode?

I’m thinking specifically about No Man’s Sky. It’s no where near a steady 60 FPS on the PS4, but what if it could hypothetically achieve that on the PS4Pro? Could we see a PSVR Mode for No Man’s Sky that requires the PS4Pro?

Like I said, it seems to have been answered with the sentence “both systems will be fully compatible with all past, present, and future PS4 titles, including PlayStation VR.” but I wanted to know explicitly.

Will a PSPro exclusive PSVR mode for a game hypothetically allowed?

    • Hard to say. Remember, with VR, the system need to render two separate displays at the same time (one for each eye). Now, each display will, however, be at a slightly reduced resolution.

Short answer: we simply don’t know yet.

  • Hey that’s pretty good

  • I still have no interest in upgrading to 4K yet, so I probably won’t get the PS4 Pro.

  • I will be getting day 1 to get more use out of my 4K TV for those of you complaining about no 4K Blu-ray I somewhat understand only for the simple fact to have the choice to do so, but I personally do not use any physical media for movies or shows I use my Plex server or one of the streaming apps so the Pro’s lack of this feature for me anyway isn’t even an issue.

  • How long is the life span of this console? Do I have to upgrade again in 1 or 2 years?

    • You don’t HAVE to upgrade now. The PS2 lifespan only ended a couple years ago. PS3 games are still coming out. If you don’t want it, don’t get it.

  • You guys shot yourself in the foot releasing this.. Now Microsoft definitely won this generation. No Dolby Vision, no 4K Blu Ray, capped multiplayer frame rates?? Why did you even release this?! Why not wait for PS5

    • How did MS suddenly win this generation? Their announcement of Project Scorpio was their complete and utter admission of defeat. They just echoed their own lifespan on the OG Xbox, when they launched the 360 only four years later because the Xbox couldn’t compete against the PS2.
      Hyperbole much?

  • well… sony, you just got me to buy an Xbox One S. i have been waiting to buy an UHD blu-ray player, for your announcement (cause yes yes, i know everyone who will reply that physical media is dying… but it’s not dead yet, and i don’t have the over 25 mb/s of bandwidth to match the quality). Not saying i won’t get a PS4 pro at some point, if the games look significantly better… but this went from a “must preorder for day one”, to a “lets wait and see” purchase… and means i will be picking up an XBox One S soon so that i have my UHD blu-ray player. haven’t owned an xbox since the original, and it mostly sat beside my PS2 and PS3 for playing halo occasionally… now i’m getting one that will actually end up getting used regularly… tell me you are going to offer one at a $499 price point that includes the UHD blu-ray player, and maybe you can get me back on board as a must purchase…. but announce it quick.
