PS4 Pro: The Ultimate FAQ

PlayStation is introducing a new choice for console gamers with PS4 Pro, a powerful addition to the PS4 family. It’s designed to offer heightened gaming experiences, whether via your existing HDTV or a new 4K TV.

With its increased performance over the standard PS4, PS4 Pro represents a first for PlayStation — and in many ways, for console gaming. We’re excited by this vision, but we know many of you will have questions. That’s why we’ve built our latest Ultimate FAQ below.

This FAQ will serve as a living document, and we’ll continue to add new questions, details, and specifics leading up to launch on November 10 in North America. If you have questions that aren’t addressed, leave them in the comments below and we’ll add ‘em to the list.

In the meantime: it’s time to get to know PS4 Pro!

New questions added Nov. 3, 2017

Q: What type of buttons are on the front of PS4 Pro?
The buttons are mechanical.

Q: Is there anything else I should know if I own both PS VR and PS4 Pro, and a 4K TV?
If you’re playing a normal, non-VR game on your PS4 Pro, PS VR’s Processor Unit will output a 4K signal to a 4K TV — but in the YUV420 format only. The Processor Unit does not support HDR pass-through, so you will need to plug your PS4 Pro directly into your TV (bypassing the Processor Unit) to view HDR content.

Q: Can I use my PS4 Pro as a “second” primary account?
No, you can only choose one PS4 device to be your primary account.

Q: Can I install a new hard drive in my PS4 Pro?
Yes. As with both models of the standard PS4, you can replace PS4 Pro’s stock 1TB, 5400RPM hard drive relatively quickly and easily using just a Phillips head screwdriver. You will need to select a 2.5’’ (laptop PC sized) hard drive that is no more than 9.5mm thick.

Q: Are there any other changes to PS4 Pro’s hard drive interface?
Yes, PS4 Pro supports the faster SATA-III specification.

Q: Do 4K TVs suffer from increased input lag?
Not necessarily, but the phenomenon known as “input latency” or “input lag” may be an important consideration if you are considering buying a new TV to be used with gaming. The amount of latency differs by TV.

Many TVs feature a “Game Mode” or the like in order to reduce this latency as much as possible, but this performance can vary (e.g. by deactivating special features like HDR). If possible, try to test out a new TV before buying it, connecting your PS4 or PS4 Pro to get a sense of its overall gaming performance. In-depth professional reviews or user reviews can also be valuable.

Q: Can I use an external HDD with PS4 Pro?
As with the standard PS4, PS4 Pro does not support external HDDs for storing game files, but you can use it for storing a system backup, media storage, or save files.

Q: Does PS4 Pro support rendering in full, native 4K?
Yes. While PS4 Pro supports outputting a native 4K signal, many developers are leveraging powerful rendering technologies including a process called “checkerboard rendering” to best balance the heightened clarity of a native 4K signal with other rich graphical features and a smooth performance profile.

PS4 Pro: Basic Questions

Q: What is PS4 Pro?
PS4 Pro is a high-end version of PS4 that is capable of outputting 4K graphics, HDR support, smoother and more stable framerates, and 4K video streaming. Upon its launch, PS4 Pro will make supported PS4 games look better and run more smoothly, while giving developers an upgraded toolset to create even richer, more detailed game worlds. How these powerful new tools are used is up to individual developers and the experience they are creating. You may have seen some of these examples during PlayStation Meeting 2016.

It’s important to note that PS4 Pro is not another generation of console. It won’t make your current PS4 games obsolete, and it won’t split the PS4 player base. PS4 Pro is very much a part of the PS4 family.

Q: When will PS4 Pro be available, where, and for how much?
PS4 Pro will launch in the US and Canada on November 10 for a suggested retail price of $399.99 USD ($499.99 CAD).

Q: Will PS4 Pro have separate or exclusive games?
There will not be any PS4 Pro-exclusive games. Because PS4 Pro and the standard PS4 are members of the same family, both systems will be fully compatible with all past, present, and future PS4 titles, including PlayStation VR. All PS4 games are PS4 Pro games, and vice-versa.

Following PS4 Pro’s launch on November 10 in North America, virtually all new PS4 game releases moving forward will be able to take advantage of PS4 Pro capabilities on day one, or in some cases shortly after launch via a downloadable update. Some titles previously released will be updated to take advantage of PS4 Pro features, including Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, The Last of Us Remastered, Infamous Second Son First Light, Shadow of Mordor, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and more.

Q: Will all PS4 games be compatible with PS4 Pro?
Yes, all existing PS4 games are fully compatible with PS4 Pro. Developers are able to add PS4 Pro enhancements to previously released PS4 games via a downloadable update if they choose to.

Q: Will I need to pay to update my existing PS4 game with new PS4 Pro features?

A: While nothing specifically prevents publishers and developers from this, we don’t anticipate it at this time. Software updates enabling PS4 Pro features on any existing first-party title (such as inFamous First Light or Uncharted 4) will be free.

Q: Will SIE continue to sell and support the standard PS4?
Yes. PS4 Pro is an evolution of the PS4 generation platform, which will continue to include the standard PS4 system. PS4 Pro was designed for gamers who want to be at the forefront of gaming innovation. Whether you decide to purchase the new system or continue playing on the standard PS4 system, you’ll enjoy the same games that make PlayStation the best place to play.

Q: Will PS4 Pro require a 4K TV?
No. PS4 Pro can display much higher resolutions than the standard PS4 when using a 4K TV. But if you own an HDTV (720p, 1080i, 1080p), PS4 Pro can still improve your gaming experience.

Q: What benefits does PS4 Pro provide when played on a non-4K HDTV?
PS4 Pro offers benefits even if you play on a HDTV that isn’t 4K. Depending on how the developer chooses to use the increased processing power, games with PS4 Pro support are able to render higher or more consistent framerates, increased environmental and character model detail, improved overall visual quality, and other related visual enhancements. For a look at how games are using the power of PS4 Pro, watch some of the first game footage on our YouTube page.

Additionally, PS4 games that render below native 1080p (maximum quality for HD TVs) on the standard PS4 can be elevated to render at full native 1080p on an HDTV.

See below for a chart detailing how PS4 Pro will display based on different TV types.

4K content 2K or less than 1080p content
2K TV Optimized to 1080p If less than 1080p,
upscale to 1080p
4K TV If 4K (2160p), display as is Upscale to 4K (2160p)
4K/HDR TV If 4K (2160p), display as is
If content is HDR supported, display in HDR
Upscale to 4K (2160p)
If content is HDR supported, display in HDR

Q: What resolutions does PS4 Pro support?
On 4K TVs, games are capable of running at up to 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels, also known as “2160p”) resolution. On HDTVs, games will run at 1080p.

Q: Will PS4 Pro be compatible with my existing PS4 downloaded games, saved data, and PlayStation Network Friend lists?
Yes. PS4 Pro exists in the same digital ecosystem as the standard PS4 in all regards; two PS4 console systems, one PlayStation Network, one PS4 community. This means you can start playing a game on your PS4 Pro, upload the saved data to online storage using PS Plus (sold separately), and pick up your progress on a standard PS4 in another room. It also means that all content and saved data that you already own on PS4 are fully compatible with PS4 Pro on day one.

Q: What if I already own a standard PS4? Is there an easy way to transfer my games, saved data, and Share captured content from a standard PS4 to PS4 Pro?
Yes. You will be able to copy your games, saved data, captured videos and screenshots, system settings, and other content from a standard PS4 to PS4 Pro using a standard Ethernet cable. This process will also work from standard PS4 to standard PS4, PS4 Pro to standard PS4, and PS4 Pro to PS4 Pro provided that both units have system software update 4.00 or higher installed, and the same PSN account is signed into both systems.

Alternatively, you can log-into PSN with your PS4 Pro, access your games and content library, and re-download your previously purchased games and content. Of course, your saved data in online storage will transfer as well.

Q: Will the PS4 Pro system introduce any improvements to DUALSHOCK 4?
The latest version of DUALSHOCK 4 will be included with PS4 Pro, as well as the new slimmer standard PS4. But it does not introduce any significant new functionality. The new DUALSHOCK 4 allows the light from the light bar to emit on the touch pad, making a new luminous line that illuminates in the same color as that of the light bar. It also supports USB communication in addition to Bluetooth communication. Existing DUALSHOCK 4 controllers going back to the launch of PS4 are fully supported on PS4 Pro; the updated DUALSHOCK 4 will, in turn, be fully supported by every PS4 model.

PS4 Pro: Technical Specifications

Q: How does PS4 Pro compare to the standard PS4?
PS4 Pro is significantly more powerful than the standard PS4 model. PS4 Pro’s advanced graphics processor unit incorporates many features from AMD’s latest “Polaris” architecture, as well as some fully custom hardware innovations, and is considerably more powerful than the GPU included in the standard PS4.

All in all, this increase in processing power enables developers to tap into far more demanding visual features for PS4 Pro owners, including smoother or more stable framerates, support for 4K rendering, advanced graphics features, and more.

Q: What video output settings does PS4 Pro support?
At launch, PS4 Pro supports all of the HD video output settings found on the standard PS4. Notably, PS4 Pro introduces 4K output, with settings for both 2160p YUV420 and 2160p RGB (recommended if your TV supports it) at up to 60 frames per second when using a supported 4K TV and Premium High Speed HDMI Cable.

Q: Does PS4 Pro support High Dynamic Range (HDR)?
Yes, PS4 Pro is fully compatible with the HDR10 specification at launch. HDR10 is a widely supported HDR format embraced by major entertainment companies.

Q: What is HDR?
High Dynamic Range, or HDR, is an emerging display standard that allows for massively increased color depth and greater contrast compared to Standard Dynamic Range, the decades-old specification currently employed by traditional HDTVs. In general, HDR-enabled content played on an HDR-compatible TV produces a noticeably fuller, richer image, that’s closer to what the eye naturally sees. That means much deeper black levels that retain finer details; brighter, more dazzling highlights; and a much wider color spectrum than is possible on older HDTV technology.

It’s actually impossible to demonstrate the true benefits of HDR technology here because you need an HDR-enabled screen and content to experience it. You can, however, watch this video from Sony that shows some simulated before-and-after scenes.

Q: Will PS4 Pro include support for Dolby Vision HDR?
There are currently no plans to support Dolby Vision.

Q: Does PS4 Pro require any specialized equipment?
Only if you want to experience 4K and HDR. Otherwise, no. Like the standard PS4, PS4 Pro fully supports existing HD TVs (720p / 1080i / 1080p). PS4 Pro can also output a 4K signal on supported 4K TVs when using a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable (one will be included with PS4 Pro). To enjoy HDR features, you’ll need an HDTV that’s compatible with the HDR10 format, and HDR10-enabled games or content.

Q: Outside of higher gaming performance, 4K TV features, and support for 4K video streaming, are there any other benefits to PS4 Pro?
Yes. PS4 Pro will come standard with a 1TB HDD, faster Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac), and a third USB 3.1 Gen.1 port on the rear of the unit. PS4 Pro’s more powerful hardware can also benefit PlayStation VR games, enhance streaming features such as Share Play and Remote Play, and enable higher resolution output for media captured using the Share button.

In most other ways, PS4 Pro will be very similar to the standard PS4. This includes the user interface and functionality.

Q: Why do I need a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable for using PS4 Pro on my 4K TV?
For maximum quality, you’ll need a PS4 Pro system, a 4K TV with a Premium HDMI input port (often marked in blue), and a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable. Users can of course use the HDMI Cable is included with PS4 Pro, but those who need to purchase a longer cable should remember to get one that meets the Premium High Speed HDMI spec.

The newer Premium High Speed HDMI format can display a 4K signal at up to 60 frames per second (60Hz). When using older High Speed HDMI Cables, users may experience issues such as flickering TV screens or images being displayed incorrectly.

Q: Is there anything else I need to know about PS4 Pro support on my 4K TV?
Given that 4K display standards and HDR features are still cutting edge, we recommend that you carefully consult your 4K TV’s manual and other reference materials to fully understand its capabilities.

Q: Will PS4 Pro support PlayStation VR?
PS4 Pro will fully support PlayStation VR just like the standard PS4. It’s important to note that PlayStation VR’s integrated display tops out at 1920 x 1080; it does not support 4K output. Also, the PS VR headset does not support HDR features.

That said, PS4 Pro’s upgraded processing power will give VR developers the ability to enhance their experiences with higher quality graphics, smoother or more stable framerates, and visual improvements in supported games. Developers can also choose to add PS4 Pro features to PS VR games post launch via a downloadable update.

Q: Which PS VR games will support PS4 Pro features?
As neither PS VR nor PS4 Pro has launched at the time of publication, we’ll wait until closer to PS4 Pro’s launch to begin confirming these titles.

4K Entertainment

Q: Does PS4 Pro support Ultra 4K Blu-ray Discs?
No, PS4 Pro’s internal Blu-ray drive does not support the new Ultra 4K Blu-ray Disc format. It supports the same Blu-ray Disc specs as the standard PS4. The Blu-ray Disc Player application, however, will support high-quality upscaling of DVD and Blu-ray Disc content.

Q: What 4K entertainment options will PS4 Pro support?
4K streaming apps for Netflix and YouTube are in development. Though 4K streaming is still in its early days, other services are likely to offer 4K video content in the future as well.

Q: Will there be any 4K PlayStation Store movies or TV shows?
There are no plans for this at PS4 Pro’s launch, but the PlayStation Network team is looking into it.

Other Questions

Q: How large is PS4 Pro, physically?
PS4 Pro is slightly larger than the original PS4 model introduced in 2013, and will measure approximately 295×55×327 mm (width × height × length).

Q: Will PS4 Pro owners have a performance advantage in online games when competing against standard PS4 players?
Generally, no. Playtesting and balancing is up to each game developer, and while it’s true that PS4 Pro’s more powerful hardware can drive smoother or more stable frame rates in supported titles, developers have many tools and processes they can use to prevent imbalances.

Q: Will there be any changes to Remote Play or Share Play with PS4 Pro?
Yes, PS4 Pro’s increased processing power can offer significant streaming benefits if the internet bandwidth is fast enough. Remote Play users on PC, Mac, or Xperia will be able to stream gameplay from a PS4 Pro system at up to 1080p. Share Play users on a standard PS4 or PS4 Pro will also be able to stream gameplay from a PS4 Pro system at up to 1080p.

With both Remote Play and Share Play, PS4 Pro’s adaptive streaming technology will attempt to optimize streaming quality to make the most of available internet bandwidth. For the best experience, we recommend a 15Mbps or higher connection and using a wired Ethernet connection (not Wi-Fi) whenever possible.

Q: Will the Share button capture higher quality game content with PS4 Pro games?
When playing a game with PS4 Pro features, using DUALSHOCK 4’s Share button will generate higher resolution gameplay clips and screenshots compared to the standard PS4. Specifics will vary by game, but some games will support full 1080p video capture, and screenshots at up to 3840 x 2160 (4K) pixels.

Q: Will I be able to Broadcast my gameplay at higher settings?
Yes. At launch, you will be able to broadcast a YouTube stream at as high as 1080p and 60 frames per second.

Q: Are Sony’s new 4K TVs a good fit for PS4 Pro?
While we won’t provide a specific recommendation for PS4 Pro at this time, Sony has a long history of designing TVs with advanced technology, and that reputation has extended to the 4K TV realm.

Q: What size 4K TV should I get?
We can’t give an official recommendation on TV size due to variables in room size, seating distance, and media types. 4K games and movies can feature up to four times the total resolution of a 1080p signal, so to take full advantage of 4K’s greatly increased fidelity, you’ll want a 4K TV that’s big enough to show it off comfortably.

Unofficially, the staff of PlayStation.Blog has observed good results in average living rooms with 4K TVs sized 60’’ and up. If you’re in the market for a new 4K TV for PS4 Pro, we strongly recommend selecting a model with HDR10 compatibility, which will enable increased image vividness and contrast in HDR10-enabled games and movies.

Q: If I’m using PS4 Pro on a 4K TV, and I’m playing a PS4 game without PS4 Pro features. Will it still output in 4K?
Yes, older PS4 games without dedicated PS4 Pro features will output at 4K when played on PS4 Pro and a supported 4K TV using a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable. You will not, however, see any visual benefits without support for PS4 Pro features.

  • I was all about buying one trading old ps4 for ps4 pro and buying 4K tv but no 4K bluray drive makes me say no. This has actually making me excited for project Scorpio.

    • I’m quite disappointed myself. I understand what you mean. It makes me sick how they are letting Microsoft take the lead with the XBox One S. With being a Sony guy I would think that Sony would step that game up. Makes me think otherwise when getting another PS4. Better off getting the old version and not even think about the PS4 Pro. Disgusted to say the least.

    • Remember if Project Scorpio was against the PLAYSTATION 5 next Year you would also be excited about the Playstation 5 only because they Are not out YET!

  • I don’t have an issue with the drive. Most of the movies I have are not 4k anyway. The only issue I have with this is that 1tb is not enough. I know I’ll be able to upgrade the hard drive to a 2tb drive. I had one already in the ps4 I have now. I now am using the Nyko data bank with a 4tb drive and it is already half full or half empty. I guess I could just play the “Only install games I play now” game, but I tend to jump to random games each day. I guess I could do that but since most of my games are digital I would have to download them again when ever I want to play them. If they do allow us play games off a external drive at some point then I will get the PS4 Pro. I hope the HDR firmware update next week will help the current PS4. I guess I’ll have to wait to see, and yes I do have a 4k tv with HDR10.

  • NO 4k MOVIE PLAYER SONY? 15 (Great, Magically, majestic) years with u guys now i dont no my pc and steam are looking really really good right now.even though there 3 years old my pc would probably smoke this ps4 pro.

  • I have a 2 TB HDD in my PS4, can I simply move the drive into the Pro, or is it going to format the HDD, like the PS3s do, and lose my data?

    • I’m almost certain that the PS4 Pro will want to format your current PS4 HDD. If you decide you want to put your 2TB HDD in the PS4 Pro, you’ll have to transfer all your game saves to a flash drive beforehand. That’s whats required with the current PS4. Just make sure that your flash drive is formatted to 32fat before you transfer your saves to it.

    • Hopefully Sony is considering a Horizon: Zero Dawn PS4 Pro bundle. That’s supposed to come out in February, right? I can wait til then. Always nice to get a free game with your console.

    • no there are no plans right now to upgrade your hard drive

  • It has been asked nearly million times. You upgraded the usb to 3.1 but what about Sata III? Will the pro finally use a SATA 3 data bus?

  • As the Standard PlayStation 4 I’ve upgraded the hard drive to an SSD, will it still be possible with the Pro and will it be as simple ? from first looks I can’t see an easy access to the Drive like the standard model but I wont buy it unless I can put a 1TB SSD in it, still think its silly that Consoles are using SSD technology given how cheap you can pick up drives nowadays, the 1TB I have in my current console cost £350 at the time but can get for about £200 now and it improves the system so much.

  • Will the PS4 Pro be able to pair Bluetooth headphones with no dongle? This was one of my gripes with my PS4 the inability to pair my Jaybirds to my system.

    • That’s a great question!! It is the ‘pro’ version so it should. But since it doesn’t have a 4k UHD blu ray player, I doubt this will be added.

  • Streaming to my mac in 1080p! Sold!, and who cares about the lack of a 4K blue-ray player. Just enjoy the games which is what the whole machine is about!

  • I want to know if it counts as a separate system or if they are upping how many PS4s are attached to an account? I was going to buy the pro for the living room and put the original in the bedroom. I want all my content to be shared with everyone who uses either of the systems. It’s actually just for me and my wife. I bought digital games instead of disc and now I’m regretting it. I don’t want to buy most of my games again on top of a new system. :-/

  • why no 4k disk drive? what happens when developers decide to make games in 4k!!! will we have to buy a new system? I wont buy it until it comes with a 4k disk drive like xbox1s.

    • Although I’m unsure if the current drive allows for higher-capacity triple-layer disks, it doesn’t stop developers authoring games in native 4k, a more limiting factor in that respect is the power of the console (and honestly, current gpu tech).

All the more expensive (about $15 more) drive allows is the playback of 4k blu-ray disks, and if the drive is restricted to 50gb disks it is likely developers will face the same restriction with the new xbox as they won’t want to break compatibility with the old model in their retail products.

Having said that, I wouldn’t buy it either without support for the highest-quality movie source available.

    • I think sony is waiting for PS5 before adding 4K blu Ray Player Drive because Developer are probably already making ps5 games in 4k Remember that developers are at least 2 years ahead of what is coming our way.

  • Very disappointed Sony isn’t supporting Dolby Vision. Now what about Dolby Atmos or DTS X? Theres no mention of
the new next gen immersive audio tech.

  • Should wait to buy a PS4 Pro or should I buy a PS4 slim. I don’t have a 4k TV.

    • Get the existing ps4 neither the slim or pro since you can get a great deal on it right now or better yet towards christmas after the ps4 pro hits the market :) Just Trying to save you a few bucks since no 4K tv Yet :) Also look for places that sells refurbished and you can save even more :)

  • Should i wait to buy a ps4 pro or buy a ps4 slim instead. I don’t have a 4k TV

    • The PS4 Pro is going to be an awesome gaming console that will be VR compatible. So in my opinion, I think the Pro would be better to have than the slim, unless you would rather have a smaller console for better space adjustment around your T.V. then the slim is the better choice.

  • 2 questions:

Will I be able to use a 3.5″ HD in this?

Will it support data 3 drives?

    • No, it still fits 2.5″ drives. Not sure if there is the same 9mm height restriction as the old model.

I have no idea what ‘data 3 drives’ are.

  • 4K bluray or go home

  • I for one am not angry that they decided to go without the 4K Disc reader. I love knowing that they didn’t waste any time on that considering most video games aren’t even rendering in 4K resolution. Any “actual” gamer would see 720p or 1080p is just fine, that 4K stuff is literally for movies, shows, and videos off of YouTube. So I am still going to buy this beautiful masterpiece, considering they did exactly what I wanted them to do. Fix frame rate stutters on Video Games and you have me as a happy customer, I have my Apple TV for viewing media, my PS4 is for gaming!

  • Sony What about the Updates from the Hardware normal Ps4 although I guess is better to have a 4k Tv First. I was waiting for the changing Led color on the Bar of the console to Blue when its On instead of white the Media Stuff Storage

  • I dont know why but this normal Ps4 should support the 4k from the Beginning :s However not many people had a 4k Tv and now are selling more UHDs TV on the stores than before but at least you should launch a console capable of 8k and the Tvs from 8k are on the way .. Why Sony if you are the developer of new technology :s … Im waiting for Ps5 and meanwhile I will upgrade by myself the Ps4 adding it 1.5 or 2Tb Hard Drive and try to get just the New Tv but your Tvs are so Expensives now too I hope you launch offers on Tvs 4k soon.

    • Bro you don’t need to get the big brands like sony or samsung to get a decent 4k tv, they are overpriced in my opinion. The lesser brands give you a lot of bang for your buck.

    • I stopped being a SONY TV Brand Fan long time ago when Samsung was killing it However do yourself a favor stop by a near FRYS or anyone who has the High End Sony Tvs (9 Series or Even 8 Series) They are AMAZING !!! Very close to LG’s OLED but without the burn in effect (LOL) Anyhow I am now a SONY believer and waiting for 8 Series to get to the $1000s Range for 70″ or bigger.

  • Sony What about the Updates from the Hardware normal Ps4 although I guess is better to have a 4k Tv First. I was waiting for the changing Led color on the Bar of the console to Blue when its On instead of white and the Media Stuff Storage

  • However I will get the new Ps4 COntroller ;)

  • I have a newer Sony XBR 4K tv that does not have HDR support, what effect will it have with the new PS4 Pro? Will i be able to achieve 60 fps with my current setup or only 30 fps?

  • I really hope someone can answer this question for me. I swapped my 500g drive for a 2tb. Ebgames will only take my launch PS4 with original drive for trade. So my question is this. Will I be able to easily install my 2tb drive that has all my games on it to the new PS4 Pro? If so then it’s a done deal hehe

    • Unfortunately the pro will probably format the 2 tb when you put it in.

    • Unless they changed to 3.5″ drives, then yes.

But make sure to back up all your saves in the cloud. Then you’ll have to reinstall all your games and suck down your saves. Otherwise you’ll have to transfer your games to the Pro, swap back in the 500GB to the original PS4, transfer back what you can to the original PS4 from the Pro, put the 2TB drive in the Pro, and then retransfer your games to the Pro from the original.

I think the better option is to just back up all your saves and then reinstall/redownload your games. Will take a while but who cares as long as you don’t have a data cap to worry about.

  • Will the PS4 PRO have a digital optical connection for exiting ps4 headsets ?

  • Why?? Who actually wants this? As a person in the target market repeatedly mentioned in Sony brass interviews, I could not care less.

The muted atmosphere at the conference could not have been a better representation of how it seems most people feel about this. No one cares.
Longer development times for games to come out while they are optimised for two platforms, Cost and time for developers to patch existing games to know run in HDR.

I could be wrong, but it seems the only people happy about this are the MS marketing team.

  • will the ps4 pro load games like fallout and upcoming skyrim faster?

  • Can i put my Seagate 1TB HDD + SSD in PS4 pro? Combatible?

  • i really don’t care if PS4 Pro doesn;t include 4k player. I only have fullhd TV. I want Ps4 pro make all ps4 games to run in advanced graphics and 60 fps. Especially The witcher 3, i want to play it like demo E3 2014. and may be Uncharted 4 like E3 demo. If PS4 pro can play that game like E3 demo and higher Frame rates. I will buy it at day 1. for me full hd at max settings is more better than 4k in low settings. 400 $ for PS4 pro with fullhd Ultra setting is a fair price. i”m not ready for 4k gaming.

  • I punched together a series of posts made on page 5 into a slightly longer and more detailed editorial. Already poked Sony and Playstation on their Google Plus and Twitter accounts. Now poking the blog as well for anybody “here” that’s interested: http://www.gamenikkiinexile.com/the-ps4-pro-just-who-is-it-for-anyways/

As a note; the GNiE posting does dwell a bit more on the inclusion of the Polaris GPU; something I didn’t get into here due to space constraints.

  • Apparently the 4k blu-ray drive is a $15.50 premium over existing models, looking at the bill of materials for the new xbox. The highest quality movie source won’t be available on the ps4 pro, and even the best streaming sources are basically unachievable at peak times without a very good fibre connection that simply isn’t available in many areas.

It’s a shame sony couldn’t eat the cost for the time being, as presumably the unit cost will go down as happens with most very new components, obviously Microsoft have more capacity to do that. A 100gb drive is obviously going to allow higher quality than a stream (Netflix 4k is around 18mbps which for a three-hour film tops out at the size of a single-layer blu-ray at 25gb if my maths holds).

  • I’ve held off buying a 4k bluray player due to the cost. I thought and heard about ps4 neo coming and all the news I read had a heavy indication that a 4k bluray player would be included. I have a huge bluray collection and was going to start building my 4k collection. Why on earth have sony decided to not include this player is beyond me. Believe me it will harm sales. When you can get a Xbox s with a player built in for $250.

I won’t be buying the neo now that’s for sure. Unless sony decide to include one.

Sonys argument for not including one is pathetic. I have two 4k hdr tv’s and they all have netflix, amazon and many other streaming apps built in. I’m so let certain every 4k tv on the market has them. So nobody will care about streaming via

I’ve heard rumours that Sony can do a firmware update to enable the 4k bluray support.

Please for the love of god do this Sony, and don’t commit the biggest business mistake of the decade.

Believe me if I end up buying a 4k bluray player it won’t be the sony. It will be the far superior Panasonic model I’d buy.

    • A firmware update is not going to change the disc drive. The disc drive must have the correct laser to read triple layer blu-ray discs which is what UHD discs are. If the system had that, they’d already be talking about it having a UHD player.

  • Can it mod fallout?

  • How’s about I keep gaming on the PS4 I bought at launch, and buy a Nintendo NX? Best of both worlds!!!

  • Can you upgrade the 1TB hd currently have a 2TB in my ps4 which is almost full

  • Sorry but im out. No UHD drive was a big deal for me, having just bought a 4K HDR tv i wanted to take advantage of 4K blu rays. I have a xbox one s and ill stick with that until scorpio which should also ship with a uhd drive.

  • The 4K Blu-Ray drive doesn’t bother me at all since I purchase all my movies and shows via Vudu or Amazon App. The thing that’s frustrating is that in order to get the maximum benefits of the Pro, you will need to have a 60″ 4K TV… given that the Pro is decently priced, investing into a brand new 4K TV is ridiculous and expensive.
This seems unnecessary to do right now… you could’ve waited a year and announced an upgraded console that is on par your competition.

    Very disappointed.

  • A list of what I learned from reading all the idiotic comments:

    1) 4K movies are more important than games
    2) people willing to buy an inferior system that cannot play 4K games on their 4K TV because movies
    3) People will leave to go to system that wont even have exclusive games anymore because movies
    4) Miss out on great Sony games because movies

    Lmaoo!!!

Please go buy an xbox so we dont have to hear from these people again, thanks!

  • Guys if buy a ps4 from Dubai, will the games that I buy In India work in it

  • Will there be other colors eventually for the Ps4 Pro and or special editions?

  • Will there be an option to set the preferred output to 1080p 60fps instead of 1440p/2160p 30fps?

    • I would love that option as well since I’d prefer more detailed games at higher frame rates than 4k output with less detail. Whether they want to admit it or not, the PS4 Pro doesn’t have the muscle for 2160p and High or Ultra quality settings. It has about the power of a GTX970 or a Radeon 480X. Both of which are fine for 1080p but not so much for 4K.

I pre-ordered mine today so I’m not just a troll knocking the system.

  • Thx but I’ll just buy the ps4 slim. I gave my launch day ps4 to my nephew.

  • To all those out there whining over the blu-ray… stop buying game systems for videos. If you want mediocre gaming and decent movies please leave Sony and go to microsoft. You will not be missed. Playstation is a gaming system. It is slightly also an entertainment system too. Not being rude but quit saying you will leave. Just go! We will have smoother games and still be focused on gaming. At least Sony didn’t try and sneak the government into our houses with the terms and conditions. Oh yeah that totally seems like Microsoft thinks about their customers. When you make the switch and figure out that Sony does their job and does it well please don’t come back. I personally have both Xbox one and ps4. You will not see me buy another Xbox. That is all I wanted you inconsiderate people to think about. Thank you and have a great day!

  • I’m getting the ps4 pro definitely. My question is should I upgrade to a 4k hdr tv or will I be okay with my 4k tv that doesn’t have hdr will it still be a huge jump playing the ps4 pro on my non hdr 4k tv?

  • Very disappointing Sony dropped the 4k playback on this machine. I was gonna buy one at launch until Sony say no 4k Blu Ray support. There is a world of difference from streaming 4k and playing a 4k Blu Ray disk No comparison. I’ve supported Sony over Xbox forever but even Microsofts new slim machine will support 4k Blu Ray. This is a mistake Sony is making. Guess they won’t be getting anymore mony from me.

  • Will the PS4 Pro support external hard drives or do you have to swap out the hard drive?

  • I won’t buy this without a 4k Blu RayUHD player. I may even have to buy a Microsoft product which I’ve never done. PS2 = DVD. Ps3 = Blu Ray PS4 Pro = UHD Blu Ray. This makes no sense. I was even hoping they would have offered the high end 4k Sony TV’s bundled with PS4 Pro. NO sale for me. Put a UHD player in it and make it $450, I don’t care. I don’t want two devices.

  • I need a 4k UHD blu ray drive or I won’t buy a “pro” version of the PS4. Simple.

  • Sony playstation exec need to change their perspective on the PS4 pro not being able to pay ultra HD bluray. This is pretty big over-sight in 4K entertainment unit and is pretty much a huge drawback to upgrade from current PS4 for die-hard PS fan in my mind. PLEASE DO THE RIGHT THING AND MAKE THE HARDWARE CHANGE.

  • Sony please make a external ps4 pro 4k blu ray drive we can use the usb3.1 port lol.. I’m still buying it with or without 4K blu ray drive

  • So I hear that the new PlayStation 4 won’t support 4k blu ray streaming when the new XBox One S will. Why is that ? When will you guys make the new system 4k all away around instead of just supporting youtube and netflix ?

  • Enriched graphics 1080p with 60 fps or i’m out.
If games on PS4 pro can;t do that i will stay with my old gen PS4 and wait for Scorpio!!
