PS4 Pro: The Ultimate FAQ

PlayStation is introducing a new choice for console gamers with PS4 Pro, a powerful addition to the PS4 family. It’s designed to offer heightened gaming experiences, whether via your existing HDTV or a new 4K TV.

With its increased performance over the standard PS4, PS4 Pro represents a first for PlayStation — and in many ways, for console gaming. We’re excited by this vision, but we know many of you will have questions. That’s why we’ve built our latest Ultimate FAQ below.

This FAQ will serve as a living document, and we’ll continue to add new questions, details, and specifics leading up to launch on November 10 in North America. If you have questions that aren’t addressed, leave them in the comments below and we’ll add ‘em to the list.

In the meantime: it’s time to get to know PS4 Pro!

New questions added Nov. 3, 2017

Q: What type of buttons are on the front of PS4 Pro?
The buttons are mechanical.

Q: Is there anything else I should know if I own both PS VR and PS4 Pro, and a 4K TV?
If you’re playing a normal, non-VR game on your PS4 Pro, PS VR’s Processor Unit will output a 4K signal to a 4K TV — but in the YUV420 format only. The Processor Unit does not support HDR pass-through, so you will need to plug your PS4 Pro directly into your TV (bypassing the Processor Unit) to view HDR content.

Q: Can I use my PS4 Pro as a “second” primary account?
No, you can only choose one PS4 device to be your primary account.

Q: Can I install a new hard drive in my PS4 Pro?
Yes. As with both models of the standard PS4, you can replace PS4 Pro’s stock 1TB, 5400RPM hard drive relatively quickly and easily using just a Phillips head screwdriver. You will need to select a 2.5’’ (laptop PC sized) hard drive that is no more than 9.5mm thick.

Q: Are there any other changes to PS4 Pro’s hard drive interface?
Yes, PS4 Pro supports the faster SATA-III specification.

Q: Do 4K TVs suffer from increased input lag?
Not necessarily, but the phenomenon known as “input latency” or “input lag” may be an important consideration if you are considering buying a new TV to be used with gaming. The amount of latency differs by TV.

Many TVs feature a “Game Mode” or the like in order to reduce this latency as much as possible, but this performance can vary (e.g. by deactivating special features like HDR). If possible, try to test out a new TV before buying it, connecting your PS4 or PS4 Pro to get a sense of its overall gaming performance. In-depth professional reviews or user reviews can also be valuable.

Q: Can I use an external HDD with PS4 Pro?
As with the standard PS4, PS4 Pro does not support external HDDs for storing game files, but you can use it for storing a system backup, media storage, or save files.

Q: Does PS4 Pro support rendering in full, native 4K?
Yes. While PS4 Pro supports outputting a native 4K signal, many developers are leveraging powerful rendering technologies including a process called “checkerboard rendering” to best balance the heightened clarity of a native 4K signal with other rich graphical features and a smooth performance profile.

PS4 Pro: Basic Questions

Q: What is PS4 Pro?
PS4 Pro is a high-end version of PS4 that is capable of outputting 4K graphics, HDR support, smoother and more stable framerates, and 4K video streaming. Upon its launch, PS4 Pro will make supported PS4 games look better and run more smoothly, while giving developers an upgraded toolset to create even richer, more detailed game worlds. How these powerful new tools are used is up to individual developers and the experience they are creating. You may have seen some of these examples during PlayStation Meeting 2016.

It’s important to note that PS4 Pro is not another generation of console. It won’t make your current PS4 games obsolete, and it won’t split the PS4 player base. PS4 Pro is very much a part of the PS4 family.

Q: When will PS4 Pro be available, where, and for how much?
PS4 Pro will launch in the US and Canada on November 10 for a suggested retail price of $399.99 USD ($499.99 CAD).

Q: Will PS4 Pro have separate or exclusive games?
There will not be any PS4 Pro-exclusive games. Because PS4 Pro and the standard PS4 are members of the same family, both systems will be fully compatible with all past, present, and future PS4 titles, including PlayStation VR. All PS4 games are PS4 Pro games, and vice-versa.

Following PS4 Pro’s launch on November 10 in North America, virtually all new PS4 game releases moving forward will be able to take advantage of PS4 Pro capabilities on day one, or in some cases shortly after launch via a downloadable update. Some titles previously released will be updated to take advantage of PS4 Pro features, including Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, The Last of Us Remastered, Infamous Second Son First Light, Shadow of Mordor, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and more.

Q: Will all PS4 games be compatible with PS4 Pro?
Yes, all existing PS4 games are fully compatible with PS4 Pro. Developers are able to add PS4 Pro enhancements to previously released PS4 games via a downloadable update if they choose to.

Q: Will I need to pay to update my existing PS4 game with new PS4 Pro features?

A: While nothing specifically prevents publishers and developers from this, we don’t anticipate it at this time. Software updates enabling PS4 Pro features on any existing first-party title (such as inFamous First Light or Uncharted 4) will be free.

Q: Will SIE continue to sell and support the standard PS4?
Yes. PS4 Pro is an evolution of the PS4 generation platform, which will continue to include the standard PS4 system. PS4 Pro was designed for gamers who want to be at the forefront of gaming innovation. Whether you decide to purchase the new system or continue playing on the standard PS4 system, you’ll enjoy the same games that make PlayStation the best place to play.

Q: Will PS4 Pro require a 4K TV?
No. PS4 Pro can display much higher resolutions than the standard PS4 when using a 4K TV. But if you own an HDTV (720p, 1080i, 1080p), PS4 Pro can still improve your gaming experience.

Q: What benefits does PS4 Pro provide when played on a non-4K HDTV?
PS4 Pro offers benefits even if you play on a HDTV that isn’t 4K. Depending on how the developer chooses to use the increased processing power, games with PS4 Pro support are able to render higher or more consistent framerates, increased environmental and character model detail, improved overall visual quality, and other related visual enhancements. For a look at how games are using the power of PS4 Pro, watch some of the first game footage on our YouTube page.

Additionally, PS4 games that render below native 1080p (maximum quality for HD TVs) on the standard PS4 can be elevated to render at full native 1080p on an HDTV.

See below for a chart detailing how PS4 Pro will display based on different TV types.

4K content 2K or less than 1080p content
2K TV Optimized to 1080p If less than 1080p,
upscale to 1080p
4K TV If 4K (2160p), display as is Upscale to 4K (2160p)
4K/HDR TV If 4K (2160p), display as is
If content is HDR supported, display in HDR
Upscale to 4K (2160p)
If content is HDR supported, display in HDR

Q: What resolutions does PS4 Pro support?
On 4K TVs, games are capable of running at up to 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels, also known as “2160p”) resolution. On HDTVs, games will run at 1080p.

Q: Will PS4 Pro be compatible with my existing PS4 downloaded games, saved data, and PlayStation Network Friend lists?
Yes. PS4 Pro exists in the same digital ecosystem as the standard PS4 in all regards; two PS4 console systems, one PlayStation Network, one PS4 community. This means you can start playing a game on your PS4 Pro, upload the saved data to online storage using PS Plus (sold separately), and pick up your progress on a standard PS4 in another room. It also means that all content and saved data that you already own on PS4 are fully compatible with PS4 Pro on day one.

Q: What if I already own a standard PS4? Is there an easy way to transfer my games, saved data, and Share captured content from a standard PS4 to PS4 Pro?
Yes. You will be able to copy your games, saved data, captured videos and screenshots, system settings, and other content from a standard PS4 to PS4 Pro using a standard Ethernet cable. This process will also work from standard PS4 to standard PS4, PS4 Pro to standard PS4, and PS4 Pro to PS4 Pro provided that both units have system software update 4.00 or higher installed, and the same PSN account is signed into both systems.

Alternatively, you can log-into PSN with your PS4 Pro, access your games and content library, and re-download your previously purchased games and content. Of course, your saved data in online storage will transfer as well.

Q: Will the PS4 Pro system introduce any improvements to DUALSHOCK 4?
The latest version of DUALSHOCK 4 will be included with PS4 Pro, as well as the new slimmer standard PS4. But it does not introduce any significant new functionality. The new DUALSHOCK 4 allows the light from the light bar to emit on the touch pad, making a new luminous line that illuminates in the same color as that of the light bar. It also supports USB communication in addition to Bluetooth communication. Existing DUALSHOCK 4 controllers going back to the launch of PS4 are fully supported on PS4 Pro; the updated DUALSHOCK 4 will, in turn, be fully supported by every PS4 model.

PS4 Pro: Technical Specifications

Q: How does PS4 Pro compare to the standard PS4?
PS4 Pro is significantly more powerful than the standard PS4 model. PS4 Pro’s advanced graphics processor unit incorporates many features from AMD’s latest “Polaris” architecture, as well as some fully custom hardware innovations, and is considerably more powerful than the GPU included in the standard PS4.

All in all, this increase in processing power enables developers to tap into far more demanding visual features for PS4 Pro owners, including smoother or more stable framerates, support for 4K rendering, advanced graphics features, and more.

Q: What video output settings does PS4 Pro support?
At launch, PS4 Pro supports all of the HD video output settings found on the standard PS4. Notably, PS4 Pro introduces 4K output, with settings for both 2160p YUV420 and 2160p RGB (recommended if your TV supports it) at up to 60 frames per second when using a supported 4K TV and Premium High Speed HDMI Cable.

Q: Does PS4 Pro support High Dynamic Range (HDR)?
Yes, PS4 Pro is fully compatible with the HDR10 specification at launch. HDR10 is a widely supported HDR format embraced by major entertainment companies.

Q: What is HDR?
High Dynamic Range, or HDR, is an emerging display standard that allows for massively increased color depth and greater contrast compared to Standard Dynamic Range, the decades-old specification currently employed by traditional HDTVs. In general, HDR-enabled content played on an HDR-compatible TV produces a noticeably fuller, richer image, that’s closer to what the eye naturally sees. That means much deeper black levels that retain finer details; brighter, more dazzling highlights; and a much wider color spectrum than is possible on older HDTV technology.

It’s actually impossible to demonstrate the true benefits of HDR technology here because you need an HDR-enabled screen and content to experience it. You can, however, watch this video from Sony that shows some simulated before-and-after scenes.

Q: Will PS4 Pro include support for Dolby Vision HDR?
There are currently no plans to support Dolby Vision.

Q: Does PS4 Pro require any specialized equipment?
Only if you want to experience 4K and HDR. Otherwise, no. Like the standard PS4, PS4 Pro fully supports existing HD TVs (720p / 1080i / 1080p). PS4 Pro can also output a 4K signal on supported 4K TVs when using a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable (one will be included with PS4 Pro). To enjoy HDR features, you’ll need an HDTV that’s compatible with the HDR10 format, and HDR10-enabled games or content.

Q: Outside of higher gaming performance, 4K TV features, and support for 4K video streaming, are there any other benefits to PS4 Pro?
Yes. PS4 Pro will come standard with a 1TB HDD, faster Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac), and a third USB 3.1 Gen.1 port on the rear of the unit. PS4 Pro’s more powerful hardware can also benefit PlayStation VR games, enhance streaming features such as Share Play and Remote Play, and enable higher resolution output for media captured using the Share button.

In most other ways, PS4 Pro will be very similar to the standard PS4. This includes the user interface and functionality.

Q: Why do I need a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable for using PS4 Pro on my 4K TV?
For maximum quality, you’ll need a PS4 Pro system, a 4K TV with a Premium HDMI input port (often marked in blue), and a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable. Users can of course use the HDMI Cable is included with PS4 Pro, but those who need to purchase a longer cable should remember to get one that meets the Premium High Speed HDMI spec.

The newer Premium High Speed HDMI format can display a 4K signal at up to 60 frames per second (60Hz). When using older High Speed HDMI Cables, users may experience issues such as flickering TV screens or images being displayed incorrectly.

Q: Is there anything else I need to know about PS4 Pro support on my 4K TV?
Given that 4K display standards and HDR features are still cutting edge, we recommend that you carefully consult your 4K TV’s manual and other reference materials to fully understand its capabilities.

Q: Will PS4 Pro support PlayStation VR?
PS4 Pro will fully support PlayStation VR just like the standard PS4. It’s important to note that PlayStation VR’s integrated display tops out at 1920 x 1080; it does not support 4K output. Also, the PS VR headset does not support HDR features.

That said, PS4 Pro’s upgraded processing power will give VR developers the ability to enhance their experiences with higher quality graphics, smoother or more stable framerates, and visual improvements in supported games. Developers can also choose to add PS4 Pro features to PS VR games post launch via a downloadable update.

Q: Which PS VR games will support PS4 Pro features?
As neither PS VR nor PS4 Pro has launched at the time of publication, we’ll wait until closer to PS4 Pro’s launch to begin confirming these titles.

4K Entertainment

Q: Does PS4 Pro support Ultra 4K Blu-ray Discs?
No, PS4 Pro’s internal Blu-ray drive does not support the new Ultra 4K Blu-ray Disc format. It supports the same Blu-ray Disc specs as the standard PS4. The Blu-ray Disc Player application, however, will support high-quality upscaling of DVD and Blu-ray Disc content.

Q: What 4K entertainment options will PS4 Pro support?
4K streaming apps for Netflix and YouTube are in development. Though 4K streaming is still in its early days, other services are likely to offer 4K video content in the future as well.

Q: Will there be any 4K PlayStation Store movies or TV shows?
There are no plans for this at PS4 Pro’s launch, but the PlayStation Network team is looking into it.

Other Questions

Q: How large is PS4 Pro, physically?
PS4 Pro is slightly larger than the original PS4 model introduced in 2013, and will measure approximately 295×55×327 mm (width × height × length).

Q: Will PS4 Pro owners have a performance advantage in online games when competing against standard PS4 players?
Generally, no. Playtesting and balancing is up to each game developer, and while it’s true that PS4 Pro’s more powerful hardware can drive smoother or more stable frame rates in supported titles, developers have many tools and processes they can use to prevent imbalances.

Q: Will there be any changes to Remote Play or Share Play with PS4 Pro?
Yes, PS4 Pro’s increased processing power can offer significant streaming benefits if the internet bandwidth is fast enough. Remote Play users on PC, Mac, or Xperia will be able to stream gameplay from a PS4 Pro system at up to 1080p. Share Play users on a standard PS4 or PS4 Pro will also be able to stream gameplay from a PS4 Pro system at up to 1080p.

With both Remote Play and Share Play, PS4 Pro’s adaptive streaming technology will attempt to optimize streaming quality to make the most of available internet bandwidth. For the best experience, we recommend a 15Mbps or higher connection and using a wired Ethernet connection (not Wi-Fi) whenever possible.

Q: Will the Share button capture higher quality game content with PS4 Pro games?
When playing a game with PS4 Pro features, using DUALSHOCK 4’s Share button will generate higher resolution gameplay clips and screenshots compared to the standard PS4. Specifics will vary by game, but some games will support full 1080p video capture, and screenshots at up to 3840 x 2160 (4K) pixels.

Q: Will I be able to Broadcast my gameplay at higher settings?
Yes. At launch, you will be able to broadcast a YouTube stream at as high as 1080p and 60 frames per second.

Q: Are Sony’s new 4K TVs a good fit for PS4 Pro?
While we won’t provide a specific recommendation for PS4 Pro at this time, Sony has a long history of designing TVs with advanced technology, and that reputation has extended to the 4K TV realm.

Q: What size 4K TV should I get?
We can’t give an official recommendation on TV size due to variables in room size, seating distance, and media types. 4K games and movies can feature up to four times the total resolution of a 1080p signal, so to take full advantage of 4K’s greatly increased fidelity, you’ll want a 4K TV that’s big enough to show it off comfortably.

Unofficially, the staff of PlayStation.Blog has observed good results in average living rooms with 4K TVs sized 60’’ and up. If you’re in the market for a new 4K TV for PS4 Pro, we strongly recommend selecting a model with HDR10 compatibility, which will enable increased image vividness and contrast in HDR10-enabled games and movies.

Q: If I’m using PS4 Pro on a 4K TV, and I’m playing a PS4 game without PS4 Pro features. Will it still output in 4K?
Yes, older PS4 games without dedicated PS4 Pro features will output at 4K when played on PS4 Pro and a supported 4K TV using a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable. You will not, however, see any visual benefits without support for PS4 Pro features.

  • To be honest, although it doesn’t play 4K Blu-Rays, this doesn’t bother me in the slightest. Of course, it would be nice to have it but I can’t remember the last time I went out to buy a Blu-Ray disc. I very much stream online now and I’m lucky enough to have a decent internet connection. I’m also in the lucky enough position to have just upgraded to a 50″ 4K HDR TV (after saving for months and months and selling my organs) after having a pretty crappy 40″ TV that was so awful I couldn’t even get 1080P… it was 480P, GOD I KNOW… THE HORROR! Save me. So to have this fancy new 4K even running on my current standard PS4, the picture quality is so amazing and unreal, that it is hard to describe it on this paragraph. I’m all about the gaming so If I wanted a 4K Blu-Ray player… I’ll buy the xbox. I don’t, so I’m really excited to see how the PS4 Pro performs and I’m definitely going to Pre-order one and see how it gets on (even if it is only 4K upscale).

  • Can someone please answer this question for me? I have a 4K television but I do not have HDR. Will the PlayStation Pro provide any visual enhancements to someone like me with a NON HDR, 4K TV? Thanks!

    • Yeah man, you’ll still a much better visual improvement with a non HDR 4K TV.

    • Sorry *Still see*

    • Honestly, no, if the display is being upscaled to 4k and you already have a 4k tv that upscales to 4k (like my sony 4k tv that doesn’t have hdr also) will probably look the same, it will just run smoother. But no real visual difference. Sucks because I just bought the 4k sony tv before I knew about HDR 3 months ago. Cant return it or do anything, found the same model but with HDR and few improvements from my current t.v. Sold at the same price ._. if your t.v. doesn’t upscale then its a good buy but if it already has a feature to upscale your content, then I have to say no, you wont see a difference.

  • This is so incredibly disappointing…. Are we going to be waiting another seven years for a real improvement next gen console, like we did for the PS4? Not to mention I still don’t understand why a 5ghz bandwith capability upgrade still isn’t something that’s been addressed for the PS Pro….. It’s 2016 like cmon Sony. (◡﹏◡,✿)

  • I would bet $100 that there will be a PS4 Elite released that includes the 4K blu ray player and even better performance. Mark my words… it’s gonna happen.

    • I hope that is the case. I would love a spring 2017 release console with extra features such as 4k bluray and or 2tb hdd.

  • Does it in any way, shape , or form improve playstation vr frame rate. And by how much. Will my origanal ps4 be able to produce the same graphics and frames. The guy at gamestop was saying VR might get laggy on original ps4 consoles.

  • Hey Sony thanks for denying us mod support for Fallout 4! Really! You literally handed over a feature to Xbox to brag about! You guys have gonna back to your old arrogant PS3 days! Don’t forget what happened to the PS3 when it was lagging behind the 360 for lots of years in sales! We, consumers, can make that happen again!

    • We should kill the PS4 and just join Microsoft in their battle. Sony is worst than the Titanic right now, it hasn’t even hit the Iceberg, but yet it is slowing sinking.

  • So much Complaining about the PS4 Pro not having a UHD Blu Ray player. Honestly, if you were never in the market for a UHD Blu Ray Player then the point of the PS4 Pro not having one does not really matter. Pretty much something for people to complain about. Has anyone ever thought that since PlayStation store Offers Movies SD and HD that on Nov 10 they will then sell movies that are 4K/UHD compatible. 4K is fairly New and not all Movies have that format available. The PS 4 Pro graphics will be amazing and actually offer 4K/HDR gaming (1080p 30FPS, 60FPS, 2160p 30FPS). To more than 10 games that are soon to be release, 10 more that are already in Stores and More to come. Where as the competition states that they will offer 4K gaming but only confirmed 3 games to ONLY support HDR (Not 4K by the way). PlayStation was by far prepared for this 3 1/2 years ago by making Original PS4’s HDR compatible. Making our old HDTV’s more relevant to get the max performance. They gave us Options. Upgrade If you want to, If not don’t worry about it we got you. Now That is what I call being ALL ABOUT THE COMMUNITY!!! November 6 is my Birthday. So, PS4 Pro will be my gift. PS4 Pro Pre-Ordered can’t wait till Nov 10, 2016. Thank you PlayStation.

    • the cost for the 4k disc on xbox-s is claim to be $15 as report by microsoft.

    • Imagine the space required for a single 4k movie alongside the limited hard drive space. It doesn’t make since to purchase a movie at that size. After a few movies you will either be forced to wipe or upgrade your hdd, so offering a uhd drive makes sense for those that are limited by bandwidth caps when streaming. And by the time that issue is fixed worldwide we will possibly be seeing the release or preperation of a ps5 and possibly 8k tvs and Tokyo’s expected 8k broadcast of the 2020 Olympics. A Uhd drive may not be a necessity but it would be a great option for an already impressive console.

  • Please add to the tech specs whether or not the PS4 Pro supports SATA 2 or SATA 3.

  • Sid is there a plan on providing us with a list of PS4 games that will get a patch to update graphics for PS4 Pro? I just pre-ordered mine, and want to find out if Bloodborne will get a patch. I am already looking forward to playing Uncharted 4 again.

  • If my old PS4 has a 1tb 7200 rpm hard drive, and the new PS4 pro comes with a 5400 rpm hdd; will I be able to “swap” hard drives? I guess my concern is that if I swap my 7200 rpm hdd, to the new ps pro right out of the box, would I run into issues? Basically I’m not worried about the data transfer. I would just rather use my 7200 rpm drive apposed to the 5400 stock drive.

    • YES. If you do not care about data transfer.

The ps4pro will boot in it safe mode… and it will want you to install the os… just like every other hdd swap.

A better idea would be to get the same hdd, and install it into the ps4pro… follow the steps for a new hdd… and then use then ps4 to ps4 transfer option.

That option works quite well!… i transfered my 1.44TB (56 games) to another ps4 and it only took 4.5 hours. That is 1440 GB…

  • PLEASE BRING MOD SUPPORT to the console.

  • I am very excited for the PS4 Pro, so many great features and I want to take advantage of this. One caveat, no 4k Blu Ray Support on the hardware side. I was hoping for at least an update would fix that but I suppose I had higher hopes for this device. Instead of purchasing one day one, I am now forced to just upgrade to the Pro when my launch PS4 dies.

  • I see many ignorant and rude comments on here and I’m not sure how, but you’re missing the point! They (Sony) did say that visual enhancements will be available and it’s a new architecture APU all together so it is not “just an upscaler”, to say that makes you an idiot. This is the in-between period for PS4 fans (similar to the S series of iPhones) to have a nice upgrade in hardware. I like that I have the choice rather than having to wait several more years for a new console. If you’re an angry kid or just an idiot, then stop leaving hateful ignorant messages on here, Sony deserves better customers than you, go get an Xbox, there’s a younger crowd overall in the Xbox community and this should be right up your alley.

I am just hoping that Fallout 4 gets better frame rates on the Pro and that Gran Turismo Sport has Enhanced graphics on the Pro when it is released. I am looking forward to the PS4 Pro!

  • I currently have a 2TB HDD in my original PS4, and I’m going to assume that the PS4 Pro will allows owners to upgrade their HDD because 1TB is not enough to store my library of games, heck 2TB still isn’t enough. Now my question is the following: will PS4 Pro allow game installs on external HDD?

The Xbox One consoles support this feature, even Nintendo with the Wii U supports this feature. Sony when are you going to support this feature?

    • They will not, too afraid of getting their system screwed up, this feature was in research a long time ago, we never heard about the possibility ever again.

  • People complaining about a 4k Blu-ray are you kidding…if you want a 4k Blu-ray player then go buy one this is a video game system to play video games it only shows how many fake gamers there are out there cause I play games on my system I can care less about playing any movie on my VIDEO GAME SYSTEM…a 4k Blu-ray player is just a perk and to keep the new system price a 399 they didn’t put one in I rather pay less than pay 500 just because I wanted a 4k Blu-ray player on my video game system plus if you want the full 4k experience you should buy a premium 4k Blu-ray player because even the one that is on the Xbox one s is not a premium 4k player so you will be missing out on the real 4k experience…get over it this is a video game system play games on it and stop crying about it not having a 4k player on it

    • What they do need to do is allow mods on the system because if they don’t they need to stop saying they are for the gamers because the gamers want mods

    • It’s kinda simple. I don’t want 5 devices connected to my TV. I’d rather just do as much as possible using a single PS4.

  • Question: Wll we be able to treat our standard PS4 and our PS4 Pro as separate consoles? For example, if I wanna store say, half my library on one console an half on the other, will this be possible without having to constantly transfer the games between the two machines when logging in?

Will there be an ability to upgrade the PS4 Pros 1TB to a 2TB or possibly larger due to the PS4 Pros new size?

Has allowing the ability to use an external hard drive being consider especially since you added a new USB port in the back?

  • Just chiming in here to agree with most of what’s already been said.
I think Sony Missed the boat here. No 4K BluRay Support? No Thanks.
I guess Sony wants to push sales of their own digital movies, but really who want’s to buy a movie that’s locked to a specific network. BluRays are open. When and If I actually want to drop cash on a movie, I want the disc. Hopefully with enough comments we can change their minds.

My Second thought, Is I’m really not seeing what the benefit of this console is. So far the only spec that offers anything better is the upgrade in graphics, which sad to say isn’t going to match the new Xbox. Dropping another $399 just to get consistent 60fps @1080p games (being realistic, we’re not going to see many games in actual 4K running above 30fps) doesn’t really justify the purchase. So basically this is a $400 Netflix 4K box.

Also, HDR is not really a value proposition since it’s also on PS4 as well (thank’s for that at least)
And No Elite version of the Dualshock?

Sony now you’re just falling behind.
    Let’s catch up will you!!??

    • HDR support is only available with HDMI 2.0, the Original PS4 has HDMI 1.4 only… so the HDR feature will be an actual cheat mode in visuals and offer something subpar to the actual thing.

  • I think a lot of people only want an UHD blu ray player because the X Box S has one. They know it can be done and done for a reasonable price. What people don’t realize is Sony is coming out with PS4 Premium console that will have the player in it and will cost more than the PS4 pro. You will be upgrading to PS4 premium if you want the player and higher specs. This is the one and only reason is it not included in the PS4 pro.

    • Why even make the PS4 PRO then???…lol The Xbox One S is an upgrade from the regular Xbox One, but PS4 Pro is not that much of an upgrade for $400?? Just asking a question because this is a good topic :-)

  • It’s fine they are focusing on just gaming, but what games will be available for 4K on the PS4 PRO? I have a PS4 and I am happy with it, but I am even more happy with my Xbox One S 2TB!! I buy physical disc for my games and movies so it’s nice to have a 4K Bluray player, streamer, and video game console all in one!!! It’s just convenient in my opinion…lol Why would I pay $400 for a Sony PS4 Pro that only has 1TB and NO 4K Bluray player??? I paid $200 for my Xbox One S and it has 2TB and a 4K Bluray player??…lol Please don’t say for graphics because I don’t see that much of a huge difference on my PS4 and my previously owned Xbox One’s that I traded in to Gamestop to get my Xbox One S($200)….lol

  • How can I tell if I can do HDR. Can everyone see the HDR toggle in the Sound &Screen options regardless of the tv? Because i as a 3D tv owner i have an extra setting for the Size of my tv that non 3D owners don’t have. So I’m wondering since I have the HDR toggle available that my tv supports it or not.

  • Can i swap my ps4 with a ps4 pro and pay a bit extra instead of just the full price?

    • Yeah, trade it in at gamestop or sell it on craigslist or ebay.

    • The right answer here is, no. You would sell it at a loss and gain almost nothing in return. You may as well just try to sell it on Craigslist for 200$, but good luck with that…

  • I have two on preorder but like many people I would really appreciate it if Sony would divulge the size of the HDD bay so we know if we are restricted to 9.5, 12, or 15mm drives. That isn’t too much to ask from people that buy your console and are trying to purchase a larger HDD SO WE CAN BY MORE SONY GAMES. Common sense anyone? Thanks.

  • Can I upgrade the hard drive?

    • Yes.
I have a 3.5 inch sshd 2TB harddrive sitting on top of my Destiny taken king special edition white ps4.
(The tough part is the adapter cable, female sata to male sata, adding the snubber diode, adding the 3A 12v power wall wart… you see 3.5 inch harddrives require 12v, the 2.5 only requires 5v)

the easy way is to use a 9.5mm 2.5 height Hdd…. plug and play)

Instead of my Frankenstein / MacGyver / Rube Goldberg solution of a ps4 hdd.

  • It’s a shame it does not have a 4k bluray player, I was hoping to buy a PS4 PRO at lauch, but now I will wait, because this is a big deal for me.

  • What is the difference between the two consoles themselves

    • The colors, oh my, the colors!!!… (well the ps4 also has that)

Stronger, farther, faster, better, able to leap 4K video games using a checker board sampler!…

  • Will PS4 Pro have an audio option of connecting a 3.55mm jack to it? My receiver is very old and doesn’t support HDMI or optical audio connection.

  • What Audio Output formats will the PS4 Pro support? Specifically, will it support 7.1 Surround sound out of the box?

  • I’m imagining the Pro has the same HDD physical size restrictions, which means a 2.5″ 2TB is about as big as we can go?

  • Will the PS4 Pro support 5GHz Wi-Fi?

  • Will i be able to use a 4K pc monitor with the Pro and get 4K via hdmi? Thanks in advance.

  • Will you guys be providing PS4 Pro gameplay videos that support HDR so we can see how they will look on our HDR-enabled TVs?

  • The fact that you decided not to include a UHD Blu-ray drive into the pro model is disappointing and it was a main selling point for me. I don’t have bandwidth issues with streamed 4K, my issue is the compression. Usually it’s set too high so I was looking forward to getting a UHD player along with a faster console, but that idea is out now.

Guess I’ll think about getting an Xbox One S until further notice, even tho I would enjoy a little more processing power when playing games on the PS4. Don’t see much point in buying anything too expensive with the Xbox Scorpio announced in a year.

  • No built-in UHD Blu-ray player? Sony have completely lost the plot on this.

Sony says that the future for video is streaming. Can we take it then that the company will never sell standalone UHD Blu-ray players? Ha!

[ And to those saying “The PS4 is only for playing games” I ask why then Sony provide 1080p Blu-ray playback, have their (Spotify-based) PlayStation Music app, their Media Player app, and allow third-parties to develop apps like Netflix, iPlayer, etc. ]

  • Will the PlayStation VR be able to passthrough 4K HDR from the PlayStation 4 Pro to the TV?
Not for VR games, just for regular games with VR isn’t being used.
Do do we need to be switching cables back and forth every time we want to use VR or get a $150 HDMI HDR splitter and feed both the TV for 4K HDR and the VR box when we want VR?
Can find any info on PlayStation VR passing through 4K HDR signal from PS4 Pro

    • I asked Sony the same exact thing and they told me as of now there is no information about if the VR breakout box will pass 4K HDR to your TV.

  • PSVR not having HDR is such a huge waste. I bet Sony releases an updated unit in the future that supports it.

  • I had a few friends pre-order a PS4 Pro and im going to try to get 1 on christmas :)

  • Have sold all my ps3 and ps4 games and consoles; Sony will not get my money , until they add 4k disc player, add mod for Fallout 4 and allow frame rate to be 60fps.

  • Thank you Sony for coming out with the pro. It’s going to be awesome don’t care about the blue ray I stream all my movies. Blue ray disc are a thing of the past. I can stream the same movie watch it on my pro save me 40.00 from purchasing a blue ray disc. All I care about is awesome graphics and sweet games you guys put out. I just pre ordered my pro can’t wait to get it in Nov.

  • Are we able to upgrade the hard drive to a larger capacity?

  • Does the video media player play files larger than 1080p? Such as 1440p or 2160p video files?

  • I’ve been 100% Sony this generation and was looking forward to grabbing a PS4 Pro – but without a UHD Blu-ray player it doesn’t make any sense for me to buy ANOTHER PS4. I’m buying an Xbox One S now. Not sure what you guys were thinking.

  • What are the options to replace the internal HDD? Does the PS4 Pro utilize 2.5″ HDDs like the standard PS4?

    • I’m also curious about external HDD options, especially now that there’s a USB port in the rear of the console.

    • I sure hope they decided to allow us to swap it out considering they totally missed an opportunity to put in the largest HD available and STILL have passed up on it. I filled that 500gb the first week of owning the system now I have a 2TB so if I can’s swap it out then there is no use in getting this machine. Sony fumbles again!

  • Will PS VR work on the standard PS4 just as good as the PS4 pro?

  • All I want to know is if I can swap out my 2-terabyte hard drive and put it into this machine. If not you wasted all our time and should have put in the largest available hard drive. Why is Sony opting to put in a tiny 1-terabyte when i’m sure they could put in a larger HD?

  • Does the PS4 Pro require the same processing unit for use with VR?

  • I have an Old tv from 2014 which at the time was ahead of the curve. it has 4k output but the hdmi is only 1.4 and it seems there isnt a firmware update from 1.4 to 2.0 so i would be stuck with replacing the tv if I wanted the 2.0 functionality….

Is the PS4 worth the buy if I cant even use the “real” 4k capability?

  • Im sorry sony until you add 4k Blu-ray player theres no way im buying a playstation4 pro. Theres absolutely no reason why i should buy it makes perfect sense to upgrade with the Xbox scorpio. You guys really gave Microsoft the upper hand which makes no sense. But anyways good luck with this console i will buy the vr though but upgrade and you will keep a loyal customer been here since the beginning. I dont understand your decision other than you want us to buy the pro and still buy your stupid 4k player.

  • Sorry for the long vent but this is a retarded move sony is doing it makes no sense its stupid.

  • One question, when was the last time you bought a blueray?

  • When you get the 4k patch for games what sort of size will the files be don’t want to take up all the hard drive on 4 games.
