An Update on The Last Guardian

The Last Guardian development team is fast approaching major milestones in production and has made the tough decision to delay the release of The Last Guardian a few weeks. The Last Guardian will launch on December 6, 2016.

Fumito Ueda, gen DESIGN and JAPAN Studio have a wonderful vision for The Last Guardian’s touching, emotional journey of friendship and trust, and we want to deliver the most polished experience possible for our fans who have supported us for so long. A delay is a difficult decision, particularly with this game, but we have encountered more bugs than anticipated while in the final stages of development. To ensure that The Last Guardian delivers on the experience that the game’s creators have envisioned, we need to take the extra time to work on those issues.

Our development continues to push itself to the fullest and we look forward to revealing new content toward launch.

We appreciate your continued support.

  • In December it will be pushed to march. Just cancel it.

  • This game still seems like a fantasy, or at least an eternity away. But I’ll be there to pick it up as soon as you make it available.

  • I’m not even gonna lie. I was calling for it last week during the PlayStation Meeting in the Chat. You’re late. :P

  • Wow, just wow, like Final Fantasy 15, another game delayed just to they try and sell it on the PS4 pro, because that’s the only real reason it’s happening, not because of some bugs (and honestly that’s a bs excuse). I just wish they where honest and said “we’re trying to make it coincide with the PS4 pro release, so please just wait and little longer”, but instead they give us the same bs excuse as everyone else does. Sorry but i’m done supporting lying game companies just hoping to make an extra buck or two, you know the game doesn’t have any bugs, it’s all for the Pro and you rather risk loosing sales to that than release it on the current PS4.

  • Honestly this shakes out pretty great for me because I can nab one of the games I was gonna pass over in favor of TLG. This fall is packed! Anyway I’ve been waiting a while, a few more weeks isn’t gonna kill me. Best wishes to the dev team!

  • I am honestly surprise Sony didn’t cancel this long ago, but I am happy that it is still coming. With that being the case, I say take as much time as you need to make it right. To release a broken game after all this time would destroy it. This game needs to impress and I have full faith that it will.

  • LOL Those early PS3 graphics are just too much for the current PS4. They made the pro just to run Last Guardian.

  • No one seems to care that Sony has delayed every huge first party game since PS4 came out.

    • The leadership there should be in question, how can they continue this embarrassing parade of missed dates and over blown expectations. Get real Sony

    • So? MS has delayed most of their titles too with more cancellations as well.
Their “leadership” has no reason to be called into question if the developers need more time for whatever reason.
You also don’t get to question anyone. You either buy the games or you don’t. You won’t be heading up some big inquisition because your video game needs aren’t being met.

  • I was going to make a snide remark, but I just don’t have it in me. The delays with TLG were beyond a joke years ago.

I will say though……it’ll be nice to play this on the PS4 Pro and (hopefully) get a better frame rate. Had the October date stood, I would have played this week-one on my regular PS4.

  • This is embarrassing, just stop being asking about this game and let it die. This is pathetic, clearly Sony has no ability to keep its studios in check. What a blight this game is on PlayStation. So sad.

  • This game is a joke. Will never live up to the hype. They should have took it out back years ago. The PS3 would have been able to run it at a consistent frame rate. I’m sick of excuses

    • 100% agreed, Idk how people can sit here and defend this. This is an embarrassment to sony, they clearly don’t have the leadership to keep their studios in check.

    • And to think Hideo got fired because he took a year or two longer than Konami liked.

  • While the trend of games getting delayed this year is funny, (2016 truly is year of the delay), as I’ve said for each instance, take your time. There are always other games to play, and the time spent with the game in the studio pre-launch is always the most productive. So if it makes for a more polished product, I’m all for it!

  • The Last of Us was delayed, won game of the year.
Dragon Age: Inquisition was delayed, won game of the year.
The Witcher 3 was delayed, won game of the year.

    I’m not worried.

    • Don’t forget about Uncharted 4! I didn’t experience a single glitch throughout 2 play-throughs. It was well worth the extra wait.

    • None of those games were in development for over 10 years though so the comparison isn’t really appt.

  • Don’t worry. The Last Guardian will not come close to game of the year. This is why I stick to indies. I just find it funny how everyone defends Playstation. Buy up your PS4.5 cash grab

  • Since the PS4 came out in 2013, only countless of delays. I see this game or Gravity Rush 2 being delayed because two exclusives competing on the same day doesn’t make sense. Driveclub, GT, Uncharted 4, Horizon, this, and others, just countless of delays. Over hyped garbage under powered console. 2017 better not disappoint or I’m switching back to MS. I’m tired of this pathetic BS from you guys.

  • Called it!

  • I think they meant December 6th 2020. PS5 launch title

  • IMO its always looked like a 10 year old game from the first time I saw it. Like a lot of others, i’ll be too busy playing newer, better looking games this fall to even notice this was released whenever that time comes…!

  • Who cares? ICO and SotC were vastly overrated games (yes, I said it! Truth hurts.) and this will be no different. Let me spoil it for you, boy and chimera creature solve some generic puzzles. There will be no dialog just random grunts while you buy the dev’s lack of story or ideas as being creative because you get to make your own interpretation.

    • Also, I am guessing this delay is completely the result of the crap storm that happened around the failure that was No Man’s Sky.

  • SONY, i love you guys but – seriously – you guys are THE WORST for announcing completely wayward release dates that are months wide of the mark :D Surely, in future isn’t it best to just hold off on a release date until you actually have a solid confirmation from a dev team that the game is actually READY to go gold ? LOL I mean, it’s starting to get a little embarrassing now. A cycle of create overboard hype, 2 years in advance, then 2 months before release, backtrack and announce yet another delay…sheeshhh…unless this is some underhanded hype tactic – create a hype rollercoaster ( lollercoaster purely for the lulz maybe? ) so gamers are literally climbing the walls, come the eventual release day ? :) Still, i can’t hep but buy into it too !

  • As long as the game will eventually be on storefronts I’m ok with a delay.

  • Disappointing.

I guess I will now have to play the Dark Souls 3 DLC in late October.

  • I just don’t want a No Man’s Sky Debacle. If you need more time to polish it or even add more to it. PLEASE take it. I just want a good game when it comes out.

  • I guess I have the lowest common denominator: as long as this game (The Last Guardian) is not cancelled, I’ll be fine. Having said that, … :still eagerly waiting:

  • I am okay with this, even though this has been my most anticipated game since it’s announcement. I have been gaming for 30+ years, endured the long cycles and push backs on Nintendo systems… endured the long cycles with Blizzard and Valve on the PC. If a little more time is needed for a more polished product, it will only be better for the gamer in the end. My backlog is thankful for this in a way.

  • NO GAME should EVER take as long as this game has. No to be THAT guy, but Quality Control team should be fired from that studio. Ridiculous!!!

  • 2 months is nothing for a delay (at least it is not many years, joking). I can’t wait for it. Please consider bringing Ico and Shadow of the Collossus Remastered to PS4 (not interested in Now as I want to own a digital purchase).

  • LOL, this will be delayed until 2018, then it will disappear again forever. Colin was right

  • Another delay, hooray… -.- Every goddamn time. It’s a trend nowadays to announce release dates for games just to have them being delayed anyway. Why even commit to a specific date then? Why not simply talk about a time period? Jeez.

  • pretty much going to consider this vaporware until I actually see it on the shelves. You guys should be ashamed with this over- hyped project….indie developers with a fraction of the resources can put out artistic quality games without taking 10 years and be able to sell at $15-$20..And to think it will still have the archaic camera system of ICO…what a joke

  • Better to release a game that is working vs. getting a patch every week to make the game stable after you’ve paid $60 for it and bad reviews hit the Net. With the flood of games coming in October-November, this is fine for my wallet. In addition, this shouldn’t be a surprise due to the release of HDR support and PS4-Pro being officially released.

    Relax folks!

  • Horizon Zero Dawn delayed

  • Sony should have 2 date releases the one they told the people to make pre-orders and the real one. 10 years man, 10 years.

  • Yeah if you could release a game this fall…that’d be great.

I mean your primary competition is dropping 2 major franchise sequels…

  • I’ll preorder when I see someone says this has gone gold. My heart can’t take any more delays!

  • I pre-ordered the collectors edition, this will be amazing if its released….Hoping for the best. In the meantime still searching for that 17th colossus

  • How is this going to run on the PS4 Pro?

  • Take your time. I have too much to play as it is.

  • If they have to take more time fine… but here’s an idea. Don’t announce another date until you know for an absolute certainty that you can hit it. It’s been 7 years. Delaying the game at this point is laughable. And for God’s sake this had better not be due to a required PS4 Pro patch.

  • I can’t take more delays !

    I won’t buy it anymore !

  • Cant wait to play what is again surely a masterpiece!!

  • Watch it be a replay of Duke Nukem, lol

  • DO NOT ANNOUNCE THE RELEACE DATE UNTIL IT NEVER CHANGE.

  • 6 weeks is not much of a delay and we do get it during the holidaze with hopefully more time to play, so I am good with it.

  • I was scared when I saw this headline, but at least it’s still coming in 2016. I would rather not have another No Man’s Sky thank you very much.

  • Please.. Why delay this when this is the one and only remedy for xv being delayed! Xv and the last guardian is the only reason I bought ps4 and my last gaming era!

sony you’re becoming something much worse!

  • Better later!! Than wenn can play a complete Game

  • So many games has been delayed this year, what’s going on?!

  • I can wait a few more weeks but it’s lame that they’re delaying a few games for the PS4 Pro, which I’m never going to waste my money on.

  • I’m actually so glad they’re delaying this. It has already taken so much time and effort – might as well take it all the way and see it through to the very end.
