PS4 System Software Update 4.00 Out Tomorrow

The next major system software update for PS4, version 4.00 (codenamed Shingen), will be available tomorrow. This update brings a refreshed system UI, Folder organization, updates to the Quick Menu and Share Menu, Library improvements, and much more!

We detailed a number of the new features making their way to PS4 prior to the beta program last month, but we wanted to share some additional information on other changes that you’ll see after updating your system.

Quick Menu — Music

In addition to updating the Quick Menu to make it easier to access without leaving your game by having it cover only a portion of the screen and making it more customizable, we’ve also added several new items to the menu. One new addition to the Quick Menu that wasn’t featured in the beta program is an enhanced Music section to allow you to discover, play, and control Spotify without needing to open the app.

From the Music section of the Quick Menu you’ll now be able to play, pause, skip, shuffle, repeat and save songs. The Music section also allows you to discover recommended playlists for the game you’re playing and view your saved Spotify playlists and songs. When you select a playlist, you’ll be able to see all upcoming songs and choose to play all, or select an individual song to listen to from that playlist.

The PlayStation Music team and Spotify have been working with your favorite game creators to create playlists to enhance your gameplay. Follow PlayStation Music on Spotify to get the latest gaming playlists first.

PlayStation 4 Pro Updates

In anticipation of the release of PS4 Pro on November 10, 2016, we’re adding a number of features that will support the system’s ability to output high-resolution content. This update will enable the following on PS4 Pro:

  • 1080p streaming for Remote Play on PC/Mac and compatible Xperia devices
  • 1080p streaming for Share Play
  • 1080p 30/60fps live broadcasting on YouTube
  • 1080p 30fps live broadcasting on Twitch

High Dynamic Range (HDR)

When we announced PS4 Pro and the new slimmer PS4 last week, we also announced that all PlayStation 4 systems — back to the very first console sold in 2013 — would be HDR capable. After updating your system to version 4.00, you’ll see HDR settings in the Video Output Settings and be ready to enjoy HDR gaming and entertainment content once it’s available on any PS4 system you own. Of course, you’ll need an HDR compatible display as well.

What’s New

What’s New has been redesigned and now includes more information about what your friends have been doing on PS4.

The left column includes the new Activity Feed, which has larger images and easily accessible options to like, comment, or reshare. The right column includes sections for Now Playing, Trending, Players You May Know, and Who to Follow.

Content Info Screen

We’ve given a similar redesign to the content info screen, which you can access by pressing down on a game tile while on the home screen. You’ll be able to easily select from a variety of options to view a game’s Overview, Trending media, Friends and Communities, Activities, and related PlayStation Store content.

Data Transfer to New PS4

In order to make it easier to get all of your data from one PS4 to another, especially if you upgrade to PS4 Pro, we’ve added the ability to transfer data over a wired LAN connection. You can transfer games, user info, and saved data. Of course, you can re-download content and transfer saves through the cloud, but the LAN transfer should be much faster and easier.

Those are just some of the more prominent additions making their way to PS4 in this update, but there are a number of other refinements to the system software overall. Please enjoy!

  • I’m loving this new update

  • Not digging the white notifications. Can you guys add an option to choose between this and the original dark/transparent colors? I liked the way it was but I’m sure some might like the white notifications. So yeah, options, they’ve never hurt anyone.

  • i have been hearing rumors that there is a folder in this new update to play ps1/ps2 classics is there?

  • Meaningful updates like this is why I don’t mind paying for PS+. Keep up the path to greatness Sony PlayStation :)

    • I agree +cusman. A lot of doubts in the air with the new systems but Im staying loyal strictly on the grounds that there has yet to be an update that has disappointed me

  • I like the update. It is unique and user friendly and the PS4 Pro should be updating as soon as it launches. I also like the LAN transfer because I plan to upgrade my HD to a 2tb this weekend

  • Backward Compatible please, one library one console. Would love to play Shatter on PS4.

  • Can I que the software update up to dowload & install remotely from the PS App or via the PSN in a web browser? I dowloaded this month’s PS+ games remotely & they were ready to play when I got home. Not looking forward to getting home & waiting for the new software to install & download before I can play

  • Awesome Update

  • Wow, thanks playstation for making my Home page bloated AF with apps and Games i don’t play

Whats the point in creating a folder or deleting a game when another app or game just appears one the homescreen

    YOU HAD ONE JOB

  • Even better, now I cant delete or remove PS Now, can only add it to a folder, so now you guys install apps that we cant remove too? What kind of crap is this

BEWARE EVERYONE, PLAYSTATION IS FORCING APPS ON YOUR HARD DRIVE WITH NO WAY TO REMOVE THEM

    • PS Now hasn’t been capable of being removed since it was first introduced…why are you trying to state that not being able to remove it is something recent?

Just put all those apps they want us to have into a folder and ignore that folder like the rest of us.

    • Kind of like the playroom. No intentions of ever buying the over priced camera, but we are stuck with the useless app. Into the Sony Crap folder it goes…!

  • We need an update so we can save music to the hard drive like the PS3 did… I play WWE games & would use custom songs for the entrances…

  • can I update my ps4 from work? I know I can download games, but can it download system updates as well?

  • Does the Vita need an update to remote play? I cant remote play at all and theres no update for Vita.

  • This update is bad, i dont want big white boxes for notifications, i want something less noticeable, it was fine the way it was -_- and that menu still basically covers the whole screen, only thing thats good about this uodate is Spotify

  • Why can’t yous allow an external hard drive like Xbox does. Cause I don’t want to go through the pain to wipe my current drive to reinstall a bigger one like how hard is it? It’s just a software patch. This is my choice I play both but when it comes down to it I like Xbox cause o can expand my memory and not have to worry about memory cause I hate having to delete and reinstall my games over and over again and it takes ages for gta5 to download an update so please please allow external hard dries for actual games and not just application data

  • I’m not worried about improving the Spotify interface.

Please sort out the streaming stability and broken media player app so I can play MP3s from my laptop without random track skipping and disconnections.

  • Update made the entire dashboard hideous, every window is awful looking and its a horrible mess looking at all the **** in whats new and on any game, really hate this update, also screw the white notification bars

  • Thanks for the Folder thing!

My new 2TB HDD will arrive tomorrow so it comes really handy to organize all my stuff… =)

  • i saw this this morning on my 4 its so awesome… SONY will always beat Microsoft.

  • I am NOT happy with 4.0 update! Interface is worse now. Color of coming up notifications is Windows 95 style, earlier it was black and looked good. Activity on a profile was clear to see with single glance, because as soon as the window opened, there were tens of pictures one by one, and now I have to scroll down for very long (pictures are bigger but this is waste of space and TIME to go down through every single). Not everyone need icon of society or events on a top – this should be optional. Arrangement of all buttons in profile is not clear and compact like it was earlier. It is more chaotic. At least players should have a choice of interface they want to use.

  • The only update I’ve ever wanted was the ability to change your name. I’ve had the same PSN name since 2006. A DECADE! It’s hardly relevant anymore. Until you give out that option, all these other updates you keep releasing mean nothing to me.

  • loving the update on my PS4s
hoping to see custom images as wallpaper soon.

  • Jheez but I’m going to get the Ps4 pro on my bday cause its on November 12

  • The next update should allwow to go back to previous interface, profile view, and color of notification boxes.

  • What will be the best way for me to go about putting my 2TB drive in the PS4 Pro? I will still keep my old PS4. I heard that if I put the drive directly in the PS4 Pro the drive will be wiped.. is that true? I do have well over 1.5 TB used. If data is wiped going to Pro, does it also get wiped going back to vanilla PS4? I could transfer only save data to the 1TB, then put the 1TB in my vanilla PS4 and put the 2TB in the Pro, then transfer the data back to the Pro, but if moving the 1TB to to vanilla also deletes the data, then won’t work. Can I just upload saved data to PS storage and then redownload the saves and games to the PS4 Pro after I put in the 2TB drive? I don’t mind download times.. just don’t want to lose all my game progress.

    • Yeah all your progress and saves is secure, you can upload before doing anything to the PS Plus cloud and also made a copy of them to an external USB for extra security,

Then connect the new hard drive into the Pro will reformat the drive (erase everything) however you can dowload everything again, and just restore your files…

  • The folders option is appreciated, but could use a big overhaul.

    1) I’d like to add a game to more than one folder. I may have a folder for “Coop” games, and another for “Kid Friendly” games. I’d like to be able to find the game in either folder.

    2) Right now it looks like the only sorting option is to drag each game around. It would be nice to have a few auto sorts — alphabetical, release date, most recently played, etc…

    3) Listing the name of the folder somewhere on the main menu bar would also be nice, rather than just the images of the 1st few games.

    Thanks!

    NICE TRY SONY!

  • in that’s how it is a PlayStation 4 System Update 4.0

  • Playstation is making quite a bit of progress with this new update, it really does do alot of great new things and adds well deserved features.

The folders probably are my favorite part of the whole package, but new UI interfaces and minor changes to thing such as slight menu updates and even the ability to further customize ones profile page helps quite a bit.

Who knows, in the coming months, a year at most, we may even finally get the customizable wallpaper backgrounds we’ve asked for awhile now? Who knows? Have some patience people, progress takes time, and its being made every day ^^

  • I have to say I’m pretty royally disappointed in this so-called ‘create a folder’ options….like honestly Sony what the hell?? Really, you go and all that some dramatic ‘improvement’ of file and app management b/c it DAMN WELL IS NOT….seriously??

Explain to me why in the world can we not be able to put non-Sony apps or games–i.e. YouTube, Twitch, Amazon Video, etc–in folders where they can be more easier accessible, too. You all–once again–have done little to nothing of the sort of customization many have been asking about for years on the PS4 and much worse what you all call customization is little more than half-assed organization done ‘lite’. In all reality, it’s like essentially saying there’s nothing worth changing on the homescreen at all since I freakin’ can’t truly organize in a way that makes the apps (non-game related) I more frequently used, easier to get to. Thanks for doing us a solid NOTHING effs with all in that dept….smh

C’mon now, I expected you all to pull out better customization features than that, truly sub-par…..

  • Still waiting for you to be able to switch from private to open or vise versa for parties.

  • need help….if anyone can…I updated my ps4 …..nd turned on HDR……nd suddenly T.V screen started to blink…..so is there any solution for this?

  • Great, folders here I come!! Cannot wait to make a Favorites folder so I don’t have to look for games anymore. To bad we cannot just unplug the PS4 HDD and plug it into the PS4 Pro and have everything work. I am probably going to trade in my current PS4 and will have to download everything again on my PS4 Pro. I don’t have any download cap so it’s not that big of a deal. Just a little annoying is all. Thanks though, looking forward to downloading the update tomorrow.

  • I just want 5ghz network connectivity or some sort of single to allow this. This is garbage, 5ghz has been standard network connectivity for 2 years! The update is nice but even the Xbox one has a 5ghz card in it.

  • Good changes overall, but please give us the ability to change our PSN ID. Charge money for it and limit it to, say, once a year to prevent abuse of the feature.

  • My system says it requires the update to use network features, will reset and install. All it does is turn the system off and then nothing. When we turn the system back on, update required screen comes back. What’s wrong?

  • So we cant change our psn name then yet. Every update im hoping! :(

  • This update is incredibly stupid, why the **** would you take away the drop down menus of the games on the dashboard. How the hell am I supposed to see all the current information about the game or about what the games community is doing. Put the drop down menus back now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Very pleased with the Firmware 4.0 more streamlined ( Quick menu is sweet ) and other nice features I must say

  • Do i have to keep the Update I really really really don’t like the ps4 profile page the picture and font is all smaller including the most important thing being the trophies!!! Whyy whyyy whyy Can I go back??

  • We can organize folders?! Great, thank you. Wii U had that feature years ago. This is so futuristic.

  • It’s ok, I like the new quick menu & folders, definitely don’t care for the white notifications though, we need an option to change it back to black. Or like how it is when you invert the screen now (I kinda like that silver PS icon on the black): http://i.imgur.com/lWEI8Y7.jpg

  • I took part in the beta. I’m wondering if this fixes group messaging issue where people not on your friends list can add you to a group and message you without your consent and bypassing any messaging settings?

  • When can we customize the TV&Video part? It always frustrates me to see all the irrelevant app preferences to download and no organization.

  • I read something about transfer data to your new PS4, Im another PS4 Sony, whats wrong with you!

  • Now PS4 Remote Play on my laptop has downs of frame-rates even in 360p since I installed this version . Please fix it!!!!!

  • I dont think the Ps5 would release soon because the library games from Ps4 is too short comparing the Ps3, even your big competence wth the name N has short library games and now they are talking about the new generation console but I guess is too soon

  • I dont think the Ps5 would release soon because the library games from Ps4 is too short comparing the Ps3, even your big competence with the name N has short library games and now they are talking about the new generation console but I guess is too soon

  • Sony Please give offers on TVs UHD 4k and Perhaps I would get the Ps4 Pro
