Early on in the development of Battlezone there was one important question we had to ask ourselves: what’s better than piloting the most powerful tank in the galaxy?

The answer of course was blindingly obvious: piloting the most powerful tank in the galaxy right next to your friends… who are also piloting the most powerful tanks in the galaxy!

Yes, that’s right, Battlezone’s entire campaign can not only be played solo, but also in online co-op for two to four players. We’re incredibly excited about this announcement. We’ve always loved the co-op in our other games like Sniper Elite 3 and Zombie Army Trilogy, but Battlezone was a fresh slate and really allowed us to go to town with new mechanics and gameplay.

The immersion of VR combined with the headsets’ built-in mics make you really feel like a badass fireteam. Nothing beats seeing your comrades-in-arms boost past you, cannons ablaze, as you take down all in your path.

Co-op isn’t just a nice extra, either. Specific combinations of playstyles, loadouts, and tank types complement each other in different ways, and certain Special Equipment can be used to boost the abilities of your teammates in combat (Yes, there’s even a revive mechanic, too!).

Defeat will make you stronger!

If you’ve tried Battlezone at a Best Buy demo or a public show like PAX or EGX, you’ll know how empowering it feels to obliterate waves of sky and land-borne enemies into little pixels!

But did you know that you couldn’t actually die in the demo? Well, defeat is a real part of the final game, and when you do lose that final life your campaign will begin anew. It’s a meaty challenge, but on your way you’ll learn new tactics, experiment with loadouts, and — most importantly — earn “Data” from fallen enemies and installations, which is important because…

You’ll level up (…But so will your enemies).

Tanks can be equipped with up to three weapons and one piece of “special equipment.” Saving Data earned in previous battles and playthroughs means you can spend it on new weapons, new special equipment, new modulators for your tank, and intel on the campaign map. But beware, enemies also level up at their own pace! More about that in a second…

You’ll make choices with real impact.

Something we haven’t talked about much is the game’s strategy. Yes, strategy! While most of your time is spent blasting The Corporation’s tanks to smithereens, behind the scenes, your strategic choices are influencing the outcome of battle.

Do you spend Data on revealing secret missions and resources on the hex map, or do you save it for upgrades in the short term? Do you take a diversion to a tempting target or crucial supply point even though it risks giving the enemy more time to level up? You’ll make countless decisions like these in every playthrough.

You will face your Nemesis!

That terrifying purple-hued tank covered in spikes? That’s the Nemesis tank, and it’s a beast. If you allow enemy power levels to get too high they’ll drop one of these monsters onto the campaign map, and it’ll move to intercept you. Trust us when we say, you won’t forget the first encounter quickly.

If only that was the toughest enemy you’ll have to face…

Thanks for reading everybody, and remember to look out for live co-op sessions with the devs from launch day via Battlezone’s PlayStation Live Area!

  • Dear Sony, how in the world are you going to make a 4K gaming rig but not have a 4K drive in order to play 4K games? I understand digitally downloaded games maybe being 4K native but without a 4K drive you are simply up scaling the resolution. Are you simply up scaling a digital download as well?

    • The games don’t run off reading the discs. The disc will install the content and prove that you have the game, !74 the game itself runs off the HDD, allowing the bandwidth that 4K gaming requires. Aside from that, ( this I don’t have confirmed ) I believe the disc drive is hardware capable of 4K discs, it just needs a firmware update to allow its use.

    • I agree @Biz_Markee. At 4K, hard drives will fill up quickly, but im guessing you can upgrade your ps4 hard drive no problem. I just hope they aren’t trying to squeeze out some more bucks from PS fans.

    • Thats really not how it works… the 4k disc standard is for video discs, a game could be on a normal blu ray, or downloaded, it’s the ps4 pro’s internal hardware that is generating the image, just look at pc’s which obviously run games at 4k regardless of what media it came on

Battlezone is sounding better and better! After trying the demo at best-buy I really enjoyed it. When your tank is being lifted up out of the tunnel and starts to move, the way that felt, it gave me a physical sensation that was so awesome and it can’t really be explained it has to be experienced. However, Now that we know there is Co-op will there be a Pvp/Competitive mode aswell? Because to answer this question, “what’s better than piloting the most powerful tank in the galaxy?” I’d answer to battle others piloting the most powerful tank in the galaxy! You guys are doing an awesome job with the development of this VR adaptation can’t wait for day 1!

Thank you! Our Lead Designer Steve (wrote a blog earlier in the week) always envisaged Battlezone as a solo or co-op arcade experience – you vs the enemy across a campaign, so that’s always been the development focus. There’s no PvP at launch. Cheers for the kind words!

  • YUM!! With a strong single player campaign and the option of playing co-op with friends, what’s not to love?! Amid all of the coming VR ‘experiences’ (which are exciting in their own right) Battlezone seems to be a full-fledged game replete with many hours of exciting gameplay. This is a day one purchase, and sits in the #2 spot of my most desired games of 2016!

Just one month to go! PSVR cannot come soon enough!

The game is available for pre-order on PSN in Europe right now. There is also a boxed edition that should be avaialble for pre-order in most regions, but I thin they’re being slow to put it up. PlayStation are publishign the boxed version, so please give them a shout on social media to ask when they’re coming, or keep an eye on Battlezone.com – we’ll put pre-order links there when we get them

  • Chriskiller00

    US pre-order info yet please?

Keep checking Battlezone.com. PlayStation are our boxed publisher, so it’s up to them to push pre-orders into stores. We’ll update our Battlezone.com pre-order page as and when we get details!

  • Ralstonizer

Argh. Want to play this full game so bad since the vr demo. Just one more month.

  • OK, I’ve been sold on this for months now, but where can I pre-order the physical copy?!
It was mentioned a while back that this will be coming out on disc. I definitely want to buy it, but there seems to be zero info about it.

Technically, it SHOULD be now, but we haven’t been given any links by PlayStation (as they’re publishing the boxed edition) to add to our website pre-order page. Keep checking Battlezone.com, or follow @Rebellion on twitter. We’ll try to keep updates there!

  • From all that I’ve read it doesn’t seem like Battlezone on PSVR has PvP multiplayer??

Hey everyone – if you’d like to see some more Q&As, head to the r/PSVR AMA we ran last night here:

  • Sweet! This is the game demo that sold me on PSVR. I would really love to get my hands on PSVR so I can play this. Even more now that I know it has a co-op mode.
