The Top 16 Trailers of 2016

Ryan Clements's Avatar Posted by Senior Specialist, SIEA Social Media

As another year of gaming comes to a wintery close, we wanted to take a look back at the top 16 trailers for 2016. These are the top-performing videos from the PlayStation YouTube channel, along with a sprinkling of our personal favorites.

We saw some tremendous reveals this year, including the recently released debut trailer for The Last of Us Part II. But there was so much more to watch, from the exquisitely animated action in the Overwatch “Alive” short to the latest trailer for supernatural samurai game Nioh.

What were your favorites this year? What did we miss? Let us know in the comments below, and happy holidays!

1.) Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

The Call of Duty team knows how to cut a trailer. A sampling of the ferocious ground combat and pulse-pounding space battles that made Infinite Warfare a total rush.

2.) Days Gone

The long-awaited reveal of Sony Bend’s latest, Days Gone blends the post-apocalypse with the exhilaration of the open-road. An excellent piece of narration here.

3.) Death Stranding

A triumphant return of acclaimed developer Hideo Kojima, and a stronger push into the realm of the strange and supernatural. Can’t wait!

4.) Detroit: Become Human

The developers behind Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls aim to evolve their interwoven narratives and jaw-dropping visuals with Detroit.

5.) Doom

The most metal first-person shooter you can find today, with a killer trailer to match.

6.) Final Fantasy XV

A royal road trip finally takes shape after years of development. Add in a little Afrojack for good measure.

7.) God of War

One of the greatest reveals in video game trailer history, and all because our iconic warrior was feeling a bit peckish.

8.) Horizon: Zero Dawn

Horizon: Zero Dawn is one of the most anticipated games of 2017, and after watching this video it’s easy to see why.

9.) Injustice 2

I’m not going to say that I love seeing beloved superheroes fight, but…

10.) The Last Guardian

With a sweeping chorus and tremendous set pieces, this trailer does a superb job in teasing the emotional bond between boy and beast.

11.) The Last of Us Part II

OMG.

12.) Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite

Many cheers were shouted during PlayStation Experience 2016 when Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite hit the stage. Let’s enjoy a second viewing…

13.) Nioh

There’s palpable anticipation behind Nioh, and it’s clear why: with gorgeous visuals and a brutal campaign, Dark Souls fans are already clamoring for another challenge.

14.) Overwatch

Few games have been enriched so deeply by trailers. Overwatch is a special case, with vital story and character development being told through Blizzard’s spectacular animated shorts.

15.) Spider-Man

Another fantastic reveal from E3 2016, and an exciting chapter in the history of Insomniac Games.

16.) Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

The Uncharted: The Lost Legacy trailer ranks up there with God of War in terms of grin-inducing reveals. Expertly crafted, and the perfect way to round out 2016!

Is there going to be no drop two week in a row??? I look forward to those. Otherwise, keep up the good work.

This has to be a joke. Infinite Warfare is the best trailer of 2016? The most disliked gaming video on YouTube? Also, the description of this trailer is the complete OPPOSITE to reality.
Everything else on this list is also questionable. Uncharted The Lost Legacy is a gameplay demo. Overwatch Alive is an animated short.
I don’t understand this list at all. Even if it’s determined only by views on PS YT channel, all of these trailers are out of order.

“These are the top-performing videos from the PlayStation YouTube channel, along with a sprinkling of our personal favorites.”

That’s all you have to understand.

The list is in alphabetical order, Ryan should have put the list up by view count order to properly identify popularity.

The Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare trailer on the Call of Duty YouTube channel was the most disliked trailer of 2016. But the same Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare trailer on the PlayStation YouTube channel is one of the top trailers of 2016.

Make sense!

P.s. on a side note…nongameplay CGI trailers should not be counted.

No Playstation Vita trailers on this list?……Oh that’s right, no games came out for the Vita this year…My bad. I guess we shouldn’t expect any VR games next year since you abandon your hardware 6 months after it’s released?

No games for the Vita came out this year??
That’s definitely NOT true! These came out in 2016:

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel
Atelier Escha & Logy Plus: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky
    Baseball Riot
    A Boy and His Blob
    Lego Marvel’s Avengers
    Crypt of the NecroDancer
    Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth
    Level 22
    Foul Play
    Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
    Knock-Knock
    Croixleur Sigma
    Blast ‘Em Bunnies
    Dreii
    Aegis of Earth: Protonovus Assault
    Day of the Tentacle Remastered
    Civilization Revolution 2 Plus
    Knight Solitaire
    A Virus Named TOM
    Assassin’s Creed Chronicles Trilogy Pack
    Green Game: TimeSwapper
    Axiom Verge
    Azkend 2: The World Beneath
    Corridor Z
    Letter Quest: Grimm’s Journey Remastered
    Downwell
    The Last Blade 2
    Delta Strike: First Assault
Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book
    Attractio
    Bard’s Gold
    Funk of Titans
    Grand Kingdom
    Adventures of Mana
    God Eater Resurrection

    Continued:

Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens
    Lumo
    Last Wings
    10 Seconds Ninja X
    A.W.: Phoenix Festa
    Laser Disco Defenders
    Gal*Gun: Double Peace
    Dungeon Punks
    Alone with You
    Attack on Titan
    God Eater 2: Rage Burst
    Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA X
    140
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II
    Criminal Girls 2: Party Favors
    Darkest Dungeon
    Dragon Quest Builders
Exist Archive: The Other Side of the Sky
    Hue
    Demetrios

To name a few, not to mention all of the physical releases brought out by LimitedRunGames, and indie devs such as Wayforward.

The Vita lives on, but when you say thing like “no games came out for the Vita this year” you are making things worse for it.

    SpoonNManx:

My comment was tongue-in cheek. I didn’t mean LITERALLY no games. I know games came out, I was criticising Sony’s policy of not supporting their own hardware. All those games you listed and NONE are on the Top Trailers of 2016? Wonder why? All those games and none of them are AAA titles. The majority are either indie games available on other systems, JRPG games or just shovelware. Some of those games may good or even great, but the Vita lacks AAA franchise titles that it desperately needs. Where’s another Uncharted? Or Gravity Rush 2? This is a telltale sign that the Vita is dead. When a sequel to a game first released on the Vita isn’t coming out on the system it debuted on, that means Sony is doing a terrible job. Incompetent even. If they spent as much time developing games for the Vita as they do the VR then we would see a list of games, much better quality than Baseball Riot or A Boy and His Blob.

I think Overwatch is most disappointing. Story, characters, and visuals all for a FP online shooter only.

Story idk, but visuals and characters are pretty good. But what I didnt like is characters were unbalanced when I tried beta, maybe right now they fixed it

A little sad to see that no trailers for any smaller, niche titles were even considered. But I can’t be terribly surprised.

Had games much more important in the list like TLoU 2,UC4 and Marvel vs. Capcom but no doubt the Animated Shorts of Overwatch were the high point this year, especially this one of Tracer and Widowmaker.
