PS4 System Software Update 4.50 Features Detailed

Starting today, those of you selected for our beta program will get an early peek at some of the new features coming to PS4 with our next major system software update, version 4.50 (codenamed Sasuke). If you signed up for the beta and were chosen, you’ll receive an email with instructions on how to download and get started.

Even if you’re not participating in the beta, we still wanted to give you a quick glance of the key features that will be rolling out with this update. We’re refining the user interface of PS4 even further, and adding highly requested features like external HDD support and custom wallpapers.

External HDD Support

It’s easy to upgrade the HDD that came with your PS4, but if you’re still looking for more storage space on the console, we’ve got you covered. With this update, you have the option to store content to an external HDD. Just plug a USB 3.0 HDD into your PS4, and voilà, you now have more space on the console.

PS4 System Software Update 4.50 external HDD support

This is compatible with HDDs up to 8TB in size. You can download and install applications directly to your extra storage, and the saved contents are easily manageable through the settings menu.

Also, all the applications saved in the external HDD will appear in the Content Launcher of the Home Screen so it’s easy to keep track of what apps you launched recently.

Please note: user save files are still stored locally on your PS4 HDD. Only games and applications are stored externally.

Custom Wallpapers

This update adds the ability to set your favorite in-game screenshot as the background image for PS4’s home screen. Drop-shadows on text, and the option to dim the Function Area, will help keep the system icons and texts on the home screen clearly visible even if the background image you selected is super bright.

You can also edit screenshots using Photo Mode in Sharefactory to make your one-and-only custom wallpaper.

Quick Menu Refresh

As you may know, in the last system update we overhauled the PS4 Quick Menu feature (the menu that appears after a long press of the PS button on DualShock 4).

This update brings additional improvements to make it even more accessible. Now the Quick Menu will cover even less of your gameplay screen, and you’ll be able to access handy Party features via Online Friends, like creating new parties, inviting friends, and joining parties, without transitioning to the separate Party app. The goal is to keep you in the game — and not stuck in menus.

Simplified Notification List

Before this update, the Notifications app had a variety of tabs on the left-hand side, like Game Alerts, Downloads, Uploads, and more. We’ve condensed all of the tabs to a single simplified list, making it easier to see all of your notifications all at-a-glance.

You can also quickly access the Notification settings from the Options Menu to turn off or customize which pop-up notifications appear on your screen, so you’re only being notified about your top priorities.

Post on PlayStation Network Activity Feeds

We’re adding the ability to post directly into the Activity Feed, which appears in a variety of places across the console, including What’s New. Under What’s New, you’ll see a new option to post things like text, screenshots, and gifs directly into your Activity Feed. You can also tag games or other users to make sure they don’t miss your post. It’s a great way to show off your greatest triumphs.

Tying into this new feature, Live from PlayStation will show screenshots that users uploaded to PSN as a Public Activity, so you can show off your best gameplay moments not only to your friends, but to users around the globe.

3D Blu-rays on PlayStation VR

If you’re a fan of 3D movies, and you own PlayStation VR, we’ve got good news — this update adds the ability to view 3D movies in stereoscopic 3D directly on the PS VR headset. Grab some popcorn and enjoy!

There are more features included in 4.50, so make sure to keep an eye out for additional info, including launch timing, in the weeks to come.

  • شكرن شكرن سوني من قلبي

  • wish i could be a betatester

  • I sined up tge other day i have a full 2tb system haven been buying gsmes because my sosce is full. I wont delete game to hsve to redownload them again if i wsnt to play. I own a psvr and most of the ganes for it. I oen about 175 plus 3d blurays. Im the perfect canadate to be a tested for this hopfully i get an email. Ps im off on pto for the next 2 weeks so i have alot of time to test

  • I think it would be a good idea if an alarm function was added so people could set alarms for themselves so they don’t lose track of time & forget to do something they have to do & not have to continuously check the time so they can game or stream in complete peace until the time they’ve set for themselves & have to go

  • When is this going to be released to everyone?

  • Question? I currently have a PS4 and love the external HDD support. But I plan on getting a 4K TV and PS4 Pro say this coming holiday season.

Can i Just plug the external drive into the new PS4 Pro and all my games will be there? I see saves will only be stored locally I assume locally and in cloud?

    • After reading, you’ll be able to use your external HDD as a primary storage for full games to be stored and played from, the save files would be best to default to your internal HDD. The biggest benefit is that you can download and install all of your digital games onto the external HDD and you wont have to worry about lack of space or have to download and play one or two big titles before having to uninstall them to free space for another large size game. Hope this helps a little, I haven’t tried it myself just yet, but I plan to do so very soon.

    • I believe that when the update does happen, you will be able to download all your files onto the HDD then transfer them by plugging it into your Pro. Also, there is a feature when you set up a new ps4 to transfer files from 1 ps4 to another. I’m not entirely sure how or what this all includes but I’m guessing it is from online cloud storage. But with both of these options available soon, I think you can get all you save files onto your new Pro.

  • Running 4.50 Beta and I am really impressed by the changes. First off, Boost Mode is awesome. Ive been playing older games like Darksiders 1&2 among several others, it feels and looks so much better. I started playing on my PS4, and then with my Pro on a 4k 10 bit HDR TV, these titles have really come back to life and looks amazing! I have found that the Quick Menu is easier to work with especially with chat/party’s. I would really like to see the Quick Menu keep evolving customization and options to be added and removed, like having the ability to change the background to a picture or just another type of theme. The Quick Menu has become a big part of the daily use, it would make sense to offer as many options as possible. The only thing I haven’t really tried out yet is the external HDD support, but I certainly plan to. As soon as I find a suitable External Drive for me, then I will be set and Im really looking forward to having the additional space since I do own a vast amount of digital titles. I feel the external HDD support was a little overdue and we have been asking for it long, sometimes the end-user knows best :-p, so THANK YOU SONY for you hard work and efforts.

  • The external hardrive is the best thing to be updated on PS4 so far. Thank you very much Sony for finally making it possible!

What I would still want to see fixed is the trophy list. I have been really surprised that there has not been yet a similar trophy list sorting system that PSVita has had from the start. You can sort by game names with PSVita’s trophy list, but you still can’t do it with the PS4 trophy list, which is in fact quite irritating. Sony please fix the trophy list sorting finally for PS4 too.

  • How about you update the streaming on PS4. Let it also stream me going to my home screen instead of showing a blue screen every time I go to accept an invite or to turn off notifications. Also every time a friend gets on or I get an invite. SHOW THE NOTIFICATION INSTEAD OF A BIG BLACK BOX! Not that hard! JUST MAKE STREAMING ON PS4 A LOT BETTER SO THAT I DON”T HAVE TO BUY AN ELGATO!

  • How about re-entering the 2 console primary affect again because doing this back and forth stuff with the primary console stuff is driving me crazy. it would be a good Idea just to have 2 primary consoles like you used to or make it so the sub-accounts can access the primary accounts DLC. Its really getting on my nervous going back and forth.

  • I hate switching back and forth between 2 different consoles just to have my son play his ps4

    • same.. when my kids use our secondary (yes Sony my second ) Ps4 they log me in .start a game then log onto their name and can play instead of activating and deactivate primary. you could check into that.

  • It’s always 1 step forward and 2 steps back wit PlayStation. I’m not really sure why I chose them over Xbox but I have tried both and yet sold the Xbox last year. I’m starting to reconsider crossing back over to the dark side. I’m so tired of not getting anything that Microsoft offers or has offered for a while. We need to have backwards compatibility and if Sony chooses to not listen to there consumers after a while they’ll lose the war of the consoles seems like they have grown content in there lead.

    • Is not a matter of not listening. The PS3 has a far too complex architecture to emulate on the limited CPU power of the PS4. Even the PS Now servers use custom designed boards with multiple PS3 processors to make it work.

If hugely powerful servers can’t emulate the PS3 (at least not efficiently), how do you think the PS4 will? Sony made a HUGE investment in Gaikai, the company whose tech powers PS Now. Why would they provide a feature that would kill their return on investment? And plus, most people who even care about playing PS3 games didn’t sell their PS3 when they got their PS4. If you never had a PS3, then there’s never been a cheaper time to get one.

  • Aye! Love the pro! Can’t wait till this update releases! Any chance you could make sharing photos or game content you save personal/easier? Like, if I captured a screen shot I find hilarious , I could just sent it to a friend I know? Seems like I can only upload to YouTube, communities etc.

  • It may of already been mentioned but can anyone tell me when the new update 4.50 comes out as I’ve got the Ps4 pro and carnt wait to get it

  • I LOVE THIS UPDATE BUT PLEASE KEEP THE NOTIFICATIONS PREVIOUS MENU…I WANT CATEGORIES. NOT EVERYTHING IN ONE LIST. BUT I LOVE EVERYTHING ELSE!!!!!!!!!!

  • What about if u had a 3.0 sub thumb drive instead of the hd

  • Awesome update!
But what we really need is an ability to clean up our game library. I have so many beta’s and demo’s making a mess.

    • You can sort things into folders, that’s how I do it – Disc/Full Games, PSN Games, Demos/Betas – something like that. Or delete that crap, or now once we get v4.5, you could just keep the ones you’re not currently playing on an external drive… and if you got an external SSD or large USB thumbstick with high speed compatibility, it probably would be even better than the main platter drive that comes with the PS4, speed-wise.

I know adding an SSD as the main drive of my PS4 Pro drastically reduced load times for most games. It’s not as good as it could be, but man is it nice compared to waiting twice as long (approx.) for a load screen.

  • I hope they are working on the picture blackouts us poor saps that got the ps pro and vr on launch date are experiencing

  • I want:
-to choose/sort what’s on my home screen, instead of stuffing the most recent stuff on there
    -to view my game time
    -progress tracking for achievements
    -backwards compatibility
-to be able to purchase PS2 games without PS Now

  • When is the update open to the public.

  • good update now can use HDD 3.0 this is really good i need this

  • But when will we get custom live wallpapers? come on guys all my themes are moving images why should we expect anything less? It would just be like a 10 second video for a wallpaper how hard is that to implement? Any ways I guess we’ll have to be happy with this for now… but they should get on that for future/soon updates!

  • Might as well make it open beta so everyone can test it. Informations are leaking from beta forum everywhere anyway. XD

    • That would be awesome. I want to see if the beta “update” will finally make my ps4 pro compatible with my vizio d55u-d1 4k tv

  • The folders still need work. Let me put the services I downloaded in the Tv & video folder. I don’t want all those other services in there like the NBA app. Ill never download that. I just want Vue, youTube, live from Playstation, netflix, and Vevo in there.

And since backwards compatibility seems to be impossible, work on ps3 to ps4 ports. Playstation Now is broken and unplayable.

Thanks for making the best system available. I live my ps4.

  • I hope the new share to PSN feature means we will start seeing this option pop as a share feature around the web. I would love to be able to share stuff from PS Blog on my PSN feed or share Youtube Videos on PSN. This would go a long way towards making PS4 a more social platform, and therefore, much more popular amoung the more casual gamers. It could also lead to a massive increase in the use of the PS4 Web Browser, which would be great.

  • The update is great. However, I have been experiencing some audio issues in Fallout 4 and TitanFall 2.

  • when is the update coming for the rest of us

  • Does anyone know when the update will be available???

  • I have a Vizio d55u-d1 4k tv. Will this update fix the issue of the ps4 pro not recognize that the tv is a 4k television? Will i finally be able to utilize the 4k capability of the pro i paid an extra $100 for?

  • Has anyone else had a problem with using party chat features since this update? A couple of friends I played with before hand are no longer able to connect with me in party chat or in game parties. We both did some port forwarding and adjusted some of our router settings, but nothing worked. Everything was fine before this update, just wondering if anyone else has had this problem or knows of a solution. Don’t really care for the new features, just would like to be able to play with my friends because this sort of defeats the purpose of the having the system as of right now.

  • Leave the notification alone it’s fine we loved it like that !

  • Just want to use my hard drive and change my gamer tag Any word on when it’s released?

  • I own all my games on disc will I be able to save and play them from HDD when ,4.5 ,come out

  • Has anyone been able to find out if you can copy applications over to the external HDD from you PS4?

  • I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO SEE AN OPTION TO HAVE THE ABILITY TO CHANGE OUR GAMETAGS OR (PSN PLUS ACCOUNTS)! IM PRETTY SURE A LOT OF PEOPLE INCLUDING ME AND ALOT OF MY FRIENDS ONLINE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THIS ABILITY EVEN FOR A SMAL PRICE TO CHANGE GAMERTAG! SOO IF YOU CAN PLEASE LOOK INTO THAT ABILITY IM SURE YOU WOULD GET GREAT RESPONSES!

  • What is the release date?

  • Anybody know when this will drop for the masses?

  • Pretty good update but I think something that definitely needs to happen is having different options when notifications pop up. I play Destiny an awful lot and having a notification pop up completely covers the radar. Not good while playing Trials of Osiris! Having a banner, say an inch tall and the width of the screen, that pops down from the top of the screen but shrinks the gameplay area (not overlaying) would be a great addition.

  • please improve media player feature due to can’t play some MKV file and current version take long time for opening.

external hdd support << i'm really like this feature.

  • This all sounds great! Now, if we could only get the ability to change our PSNs like on Xbox box; THAT would be awesome!

  • Boost should have available at launch, if this is overclocking is it stressing the cpu further, should our warranties reset due to this overclock.

  • Im an old (65 years old) Playstation admirer that have worked with advanced special computer systems for many years and I was an pioneer as an homecomputer buff since my first ZX80!
I HAVE STILL MY ZX80, AMIGA 500,AMIGA 500+ and several UPHOTTED AMIGA 12OOS. When my son took over I stopped playing video games for many years but when my son showed me GTA IV and the demo of RED DEAD REDEMPTION (am an old Western movie lover) I just had to buy an Playstation 3 and RDR! Already then I was surprised that it was impossible to connect an external HDD to it. Kind of angry really so its high time that Sony stopped to stop os from doing that. And I think next Playstation could have an closed place easy to open and place an HDD of your own liking there because 1 Tb since many years is way to small already several years ago. They could even sell next Playstation without an hard disk to make it cheaper for us or use the unused marginal to give us better harsware. And of course keep the possibility to connect one oe more external HDD.

  • As an owner of both Xbox One console and PS4 Pro, I’d really like to see Sony add backwards compatibility in a similar fashion to Microsoft. I don’t want to subscribe to Now (as I’m sure not many others have either), I just want to finally be able to put my PS3 to rest once and for all and still be able to play games I’ve purchased. A nice touch Xbox has done is to verify a game you have from Xbox 360 by placing it in the Xbox One, then you’re prompted immediately if you’d like to download the backwards compatible game, and get this,…..for FREE! That’s right. I have to give credit to MS for this, just wishing Sony would get their collective heads out of their asses and realize, customers want it backwards compatiblity, not yet another proprietary option that forces their customers to constantly bend to their wishes. I.E. sony branded memory sticks anyone? Universal Media discs….all dead because their customers said NO. Wake up Sony, and make things right.

  • What about 3D capability on all PS4 consoles?

  • Custom Wallpaper is great but don’t just limit it to screen shots from games. I’m sure all of us would love to be able to use photos from the internet.

  • I wish I knew an approximate release date for this update. me and my husband have been trying not to get to many new games or install anything new for months now because we had so little space left on our ps4. needless to say I can not even play a few of my games now because they require a large update and I do not have the space for it anymore. :( we also play all the games installed so can not really just up and delete stuff to make room.

  • When is it going to release??
I can’t wait to download all of my digital games on my external HD.

  • sooooooooo

WHEN IS IT BEING RELEASED !!!!

  • I’m just reading up on this and I was wanting to know can I use a docking station with my hdd to get more space? I’ve been looking around and reading but wouldn’t know so I’d want to get feedback on this before I go and purchase one with a few hdds

  • When is this update coming out for PS4 users
