PS4 System Software Update 4.50 Out Tomorrow

External HDD support arrives alongside a host of other features, including voice chat for Remote Play.

Our next major system software update for PS4, version 4.50 (codenamed Sasuke), rolls out tomorrow. We’ve already shared some of the key features last month, like external HDD support and custom wallpapers, but that wasn’t all this update has to offer. Here’s a look at some additional features heading to your system soon.

Improved 2D Images on PS VR
If you’re playing a game in PS VR and you return to the PS4 home screen, you may notice that the resolution looks lower than normal on the TV Social Screen. Following this update, you’ll find that the resolution of the system screen displayed on your TV is significantly better when you’re out of VR mode.

Also, the resolution of Cinematic Mode on PS VR will improve — if your PS VR screen size is set to Small or Medium, the frame rate of content viewed in Cinematic Mode goes up from 90Hz to 120Hz with this update.

Voice Chat for Remote Play
We’re adding voice chat when using Remote Play on Windows PC, Mac or an Xperia device. This is especially useful if you’ve got a gaming session planned with your friends, but you’re away from your system. You can switch your mic on and off via the microphone icon on the Tool Bar of the Remote Play app.

Off Console Availability
We have a variety of off-console apps and features that make communication with other gamers easier, like the PlayStation App and PS Messages. We’re adding an icon, shaped like a smartphone, which indicates a player is logged into PSN but away from their system.

Boost Mode (for PlayStation 4 Pro only)
PS4 Pro gets a new feature in this update called Boost Mode. This feature has been designed to provide better performance for select legacy titles that have not been patched to take advantage of the PS4 Pro’s faster CPU and its faster and double-sized GPU.

This can provide a noticeable frame rate boost to some games with variable frame rates, and can provide frame rate stability for games that are programmed to run at 30 Hz or 60 Hz. Depending on the game, the increased CPU speed may also result in shorter load times. You can turn on Boost Mode by going to Settings > System.

Keep in mind that Boost Mode is not guaranteed to work with all titles. Turning the setting off will allow the game to be played in a mode that replicates the standard PS4.

PS Messages and Communities app Updates
We’re also updating the PS Messages (Android/iOS) and PS Communities (Android/iOS) apps tomorrow with a few handy features.

  • When you receive a Party invitation from your friends on PS Messages, now you can respond with a quick reply, “I’ll join later” or “Sorry, I can’t join,” when you want to get back to them ASAP.
  • On the Communities app, you can now easily check the PSN service status under Settings > View Status of PSN Services.
  • Also on the Communities app, iOS users can tell at a glance if there are any new posts in their community by checking the badge app icon (the number in a red circle at the top-right corner of the app’s icon).

We can’t wait for you to get your hands on all these new features, and make sure to let us know what you think in the comments. We’re listening and always appreciate your feedback!

Lol at all the sony ponys come running to defend there favorite system. That 1 dude mention the rest mode issue glad im not the only 1 with that issues i have problems downloading Wildlands digitally it keeps erroring when ever i go to rest mode to download oh well i’ll just stick to discs and avoid digital downloads like the black plauge. :) saves me money.

  • Boost me baby boost me. List of boosted games coming soon I assume…

  • Please revert the notification menu back to its previous iteration. It is a complete unorganized mess in the beta.

  • I thought this update was going to add support for 3d Blu-ray viewing in VR? Or is that a future update?

  • Could you give us more information regarding HDD support with this new update, what type of hard drives will support, what capacity and in what format?

  • “We’re listening and always appreciate your feedback!” If so what about backward compatibility? I want to buy PS3 games and play on PS4!!! (Hitman series…)

    • PS3 is hard to emulate, they could have made the PS4 backwards compatible like the launch PS3 was for PS2 games but if you remember the PS3 was $699 at launch, they wanted to make the PS4 cheaper

PS NOW is not proof the PS4 can play PS3 games natively, PS NOW is streaming directly off a PS3 in a big server room full of PS3s

  • If u listen…I want to buy PS3 games and play on PS4!!! (Hitman series…)

  • Please Please Please look into increasing the size of Party Chat from 8 to 16 or more. In game audio is never near as clear as the party chat audio. Also, we can record party chat and cannot record game chat. In games where you’re playing with more than 8 friends, depending on the game mode you’re playing the game chat gets split up and you can’t talk to the other team anymore. Party chat circumvents this.

  • How about you guys release the remote play app to other devices besides xperian and PC, it been almost 4yrs, Id like to use an official remote play app for my galaxy already.

  • Sonofa! They conspicuously left out the PSVR 3D Blu Ray support. I was looking forward to that feature the most.

I hope it was just an oversight, more likely though it was left out of the press release deliberately, which is a bummer.

  • Yay, fjnally boost mode & external HDD support <3

  • they need to add batch delete messages unless i missed it.

  • Finally! Now i can put a custom wallpaper, i’ve been waiting for a long time ever sense i got playstation 4. Thank you!

  • Is it true that the “Notification” section is no longer gonna be in dividers like it is rn? Which is A LOT better and cleaner. It is supposedly going to be all cramp up ): with this new update

  • SONY, if you read this id like to apologize for all these people who cry for this update and that update. Complaining as if theyre entitled to anything and everything.

With that said im super stoked for the Boost Mode for my PS4 Pro. I went out and bought a PS4 Pro to replace my standard PS4 the day i found out about this update lol.

    Keep up the good work!

  • How about expanding the number of user that can be in a chat group, 8 is kind of low considering most have many friends on PSN. Just food for thought.

  • Can I make a suggestion to Sony for the next update to add more file formats for the Media Player such as WMA, WMV and older versions of AVI, Divix and Xvid. Please because it I don’t wanna covert my files.

  • Excellent news, seems like an overall great firmware update!

For future update, please add WebVR standard into the PS4 web browser for PS VR to view VR videos on the PS 4 browser. Thanks

  • Why put PSN Status in the Communities app? It should go in the main PS app. Please, let us change our IDs. And please, improve the notifications menu. Thank you!

  • This is an awesome update – THANK YOU! I love Boost Mode on PS4 Pro. However, for the regular PS4, could we have the UI display in 4K with 4K tvs? The current UI looks terrible (jaggies/smearing) on a 4K tv. The regular PS4 should be able to handle that, no?

  • Does anyone know if this update will allow you to plug a hard drive in the usb to be used for saved data. Instead of having to change the hard drive out. I heard that it was on the next patch which would be this one.

  • I aslo agree that the ps4 needs backwards compatibility. If this is not an option then thsn why are you making playstation plus users pay extra for playstaition now? Are we not giving you enough money Sony? Its a huge disappointment and i feel as if it needs to be adressed.

Hopefully you will reply. Only thing im majorly interested in with this new update is the added colors to the particle themes.. If you had backwards compatibility you may have the lead over XBOX One. Even microsoft is going to be offering a better game streaming service like playstation now.

  • when are we getting backwards compatibility? my ps3 broke and I wanna play those games without and emulator.

  • I would like to be able to delete unwanted demos and betas from the Library. Too much clutter with multiple titles with the same name (demo/beta/full game). Having folders was great but only allowed you to sort what was installed.

  • Hmmrmph, no mention of 3D Blu-ray support added to PSVR? Did that get overlooked, or rolled back?

  • Meanwhile, no update on ps2ps4 or actual ps1 bc..

  • So will this update also fix bugs, like the microphone on most earbuds apparently doesn’t work on the DS4 anylonger?

  • Yeah…for me the best feature and very awaited one is the capability for external games storage, for gamers like me who have dozens of games and that are plus subscribers is like a dream come true… Thanks Sony

  • ” …and can provide frame rate stability for games that are programmed to run at 30 Hz or 60 Hz”

That is kinda misleading because developers don’t force a particular refresh to 30 HZ, since the PS4 Pro always outputs at 60 HZ. Developers can, and do, however, cap the FPS (frames per second) of a game to something like 30.

So the correct term here should be FPS and not HZ.

  • Can I just say, FINALLY EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE SUPPORT! I am so tired of deleting games just to play new ones, I can’t wait!

  • A better update for the PSN app, or the PSN messages app would be to add the ability to join the party and speak through the phone headset. I would like to mention I do not of course know the challenges this would present, or the other reasons you may not want/be able to do this.

  • JESUS, why wont they add H264 (mkv) H265 9hevc0 support so we can play our media files. it cant be that damn hard. we’ve been asking since launch, so wtf is up with that SONY.

  • What about 3D Blu-ray for PSVR capability? Will it be part of the 4.50 update? Like to know have plenty 3D Blu-ray movies. Can’t wait!

  • We should be able to choose which side our notifications appear on. When playing Destiny, or COD for that matter, the notifications block the radar. They didn’t before until just recently.

  • Will Boost Mode improve the framerate on PS2 emulated games? Right now they’re pretty choppy without it. Sony should be ashamed to have released PS2 emulations being as choppy as they are. The same games play flawlessly in PCSX2 on my PC, but I like having the added trophies.

Also, if you really want to get a leg up on the competition, you should add the ability to play ANY game in stereoscopic 3D, just like TriDef does for PC games (look it up if you haven’t heard of it). Or even make it so that VR games can be played in stereoscopic 3D without a VR headset. My 3D TV needs more love.

    • Ive also been curious is PS2 emulation will see performance boosts. Ive looked all over and cant find anyone testing this.

  • When will be able to change gamertags?

  • Can Boost Mode improve Graphics

  • What time tomorrow should we expect update

  • when will they fix the HDR passthrough problem with the PSVR PU

  • Can we get a remote play app for Android/iOS devices? This would be tremendous to have with me on the graveyard shift. It’s time to lose the Xperia exclusivity. Especially since most carriers in the U.S. don’t even offer the line.

  • And a new handheld

  • At what time will the update go live for download?

  • Finally just want a Gran Turismo update and we are set! Thank you Sony

  • Playability of 3D Blu-rays is confirmed in the EU Blog cant wait to try along with BEAST mode.

  • Why not gettin the chat party to 12 players

  • Will share play finally work with this update

  • Dear PS4 why don’t y’all change the party size to10 or 14 because you have people who can’t join and you would have to kick people out and they would get mad that’s something to update

  • Still waiting for the update that says “PSN wallet is no longer region locked, users can now add credit cards and paypal accounts from all over the world!”

  • Is Sony going to finally fix the blurry avatar problem? Every since the last update, avatars have been looking kind of blurry. 4.00 looked fine but 4.07 was when it started I think.

  • Great job on this update! Can’t wait to try out Boost Mode. Please please paaaalease give us a better app. Xbox is light years ahead of our app. We need remote viewing of screenshots and video clips. And that’s just the start. Great job on this update. Look forward to what comes next!
