PS4 System Software Update 4.50 Out Tomorrow

External HDD support arrives alongside a host of other features, including voice chat for Remote Play.

Our next major system software update for PS4, version 4.50 (codenamed Sasuke), rolls out tomorrow. We’ve already shared some of the key features last month, like external HDD support and custom wallpapers, but that wasn’t all this update has to offer. Here’s a look at some additional features heading to your system soon.

Improved 2D Images on PS VR
If you’re playing a game in PS VR and you return to the PS4 home screen, you may notice that the resolution looks lower than normal on the TV Social Screen. Following this update, you’ll find that the resolution of the system screen displayed on your TV is significantly better when you’re out of VR mode.

Also, the resolution of Cinematic Mode on PS VR will improve — if your PS VR screen size is set to Small or Medium, the frame rate of content viewed in Cinematic Mode goes up from 90Hz to 120Hz with this update.

Voice Chat for Remote Play
We’re adding voice chat when using Remote Play on Windows PC, Mac or an Xperia device. This is especially useful if you’ve got a gaming session planned with your friends, but you’re away from your system. You can switch your mic on and off via the microphone icon on the Tool Bar of the Remote Play app.

Off Console Availability
We have a variety of off-console apps and features that make communication with other gamers easier, like the PlayStation App and PS Messages. We’re adding an icon, shaped like a smartphone, which indicates a player is logged into PSN but away from their system.

Boost Mode (for PlayStation 4 Pro only)
PS4 Pro gets a new feature in this update called Boost Mode. This feature has been designed to provide better performance for select legacy titles that have not been patched to take advantage of the PS4 Pro’s faster CPU and its faster and double-sized GPU.

This can provide a noticeable frame rate boost to some games with variable frame rates, and can provide frame rate stability for games that are programmed to run at 30 Hz or 60 Hz. Depending on the game, the increased CPU speed may also result in shorter load times. You can turn on Boost Mode by going to Settings > System.

Keep in mind that Boost Mode is not guaranteed to work with all titles. Turning the setting off will allow the game to be played in a mode that replicates the standard PS4.

PS Messages and Communities app Updates
We’re also updating the PS Messages (Android/iOS) and PS Communities (Android/iOS) apps tomorrow with a few handy features.

  • When you receive a Party invitation from your friends on PS Messages, now you can respond with a quick reply, “I’ll join later” or “Sorry, I can’t join,” when you want to get back to them ASAP.
  • On the Communities app, you can now easily check the PSN service status under Settings > View Status of PSN Services.
  • Also on the Communities app, iOS users can tell at a glance if there are any new posts in their community by checking the badge app icon (the number in a red circle at the top-right corner of the app’s icon).

We can’t wait for you to get your hands on all these new features, and make sure to let us know what you think in the comments. We’re listening and always appreciate your feedback!

  • What about delete all messages!!!!!

  • Thank you for adding External HDD support! Just upgraded to a PS4 Pro and have a 3TB external on the way. I hate deleting games because of space issues. This support will make it so I never have to worry about space again!

  • Still no update as of 12am est

  • Hmm so they went back on that stupid decision of making the notification list a mess?…I hope so cuz that was the worst idea I’ve ever seen on a PS update. And if they really gave up on doing that then that’s already the best thing on this update.

I just hope I stop getting damn errors asking me to update the system all the time.Would hope for a fix on video recording but lol we’re talking about Sony here, that’d be like a dream.

PS:What happened to the Blog?…was just some days away from it and it’s crazy different.

  • This may sound like a dumb request for a console, but I wish the built-in browser supported use of a real computer mouse instead of a PS4 controller to move the cursor. I know the console itself recognizes both USB and Bluetooth mice, and the Settings even has the ability to configure mouse use for tracking, clicking, and left/right handed people.

  • Nothing ready for download here in the UK this morning…

  • about time!
we’ve only been waiting months for this.

  • Downloading Now!!!! It’s live…. Chicago area

  • Why Sony just WHY? Why didn’t you resolve this problem in the full 4.50 release: ?

Now I can’t roll back to 4.07 which didn’t have that problem. I reported that bug to the official beta bug report but it seems they didn’t listen. To whom should I report it now?

  • I feel to make the app on your phone better they should add the ability to join a party from your phone so that if you are away from your PlayStation you can still talk to your friends without waiting to get home.

    • Really good idea. They should make mobile app able to be used for party to voice chat. They enable the phone to be used as microphone in Singstar or the mobile app to be used to draw things in Playroom.

  • Make PS4 backwards compatible please

  • Will i be able to watch 4k movies from external hdd and if yes in what format?

  • Why don’t please fix the ps4 headset it stops my internet from working

  • I hope that mic support for remote play is on Vita as well as PC/Mac and xperia? Wasn’t mentioned in the patch notes.

  • Fix the damn notification area. I hate not being able to delete stuff. It’s frustrating as hell! Completely stupid update. Why can’t I delete notifications about messages etc that don’t even exist anymore!?!

Talk about a step backwards. It’s really ****ed me off.

  • With the external HDD update, can you also partition the drive so you can put videos on there too? I mean, this wouldn’t be an issue on PS3 as you could store videos locally, but. you can’t do that on the PS4.

  • Can it be 1TB usb drive? Or only formal Ext. HD?

  • And yet we still don’t have back compatibility like come on now if PlayStation did that they would make a ton of money off of it just like Microsoft, also PlayStation Now is garbage why would we wana stream games for a limited time when we actually want to enjoy our classic ps3 games for an unlimited time but I guess PlayStation loves getting beat by they’re competition.

  • The new notification area is a mess, please bring it back to what it was!

  • They still haven’t fix the drift problem in cinema mode:(

  • The only thing I am bummed about is the notifications merge. I think it will be worse than now. I will just make it more cluttered. Bluetooth availability also would have been nice, but I hope it comes soon.

  • This sounds great. Can we please have an update that allows you to completely remove demos and expired alphas and betas from the library. Too much clutter!

  • Not related to this update. But, I have noticed a problem that I am curious if other people are having that Sony could aim to improve for the next update.

When load a game in the disc drive for the first time, it tries to automatically download the update or necessary files. A lot of times i will get an immediate error message stating that there is not enough space on the hard drive. I will then go and clear some storage space. When I go back out to the dashboard where the update bar below the game icon has a pause though it, when clicking on it again to resume download, it always errors out immediately – stating “An error has occurred” – 100% of the time. The only way it will actually resume the download is if I restart my PS4.

    • I can tell you a way out of this one; delete the update, then restart it. It will restart the update without rebooting.

  • There are a few sub questions and requests within this problem.

    1) In some cases it states that I do not have enough space, when it turns out I actually did given the free space that was available and then in retrospect of the size of the new game’s file. Why does this happen? Does the PS4 require x amount of free space on the hard drive to run properly?

    2) Why, when downloading a game or update and it states that there is not enough free space available does it not tell you how much free space (in total) is required vs. how much is available. This would be helpful to know.

    3) My, original question, why does it error out when trying to resume a download, even after clearing plenty of space on the hard drive? It’s tedious to have to restart my PS4 to resume a download.

  • That’s cool and all but how about letting me change my profile picture.

  • I absolutely hate the notifications tab in this update. Play Station claims this change was to “simplify and make things easier to navigate.” For someone who has an obsession with organization, this is a load of horse crap. Having every last notification compiled into one list is a total fluster cluck… a tip to the syste designers, just because you have nothing else to change or add doesn’t mean you should break something that isn’t broken.

This is a total mess especially since the first 4 items on the list from top to bottom aren’t even in date order… it goes as follows

    P.T. Cannot download. 1/21/17
    Saved data cannot upload 10/30/16
System software update 4.5. 10 minutes ago
    (Name) joined a party 12:51am

This is the most illogical crap I hav ever seen in my life well done PS *facepalms*

  • I downloaded this update last night, and now my PS4 won’t connect to the internet, even though its connected via ethernet cable.

No matter what I try, it just says “cannot connect to server”. Yet, none of the other devices in the house are having problems connecting to my internet, so the problem is either the PS4 (with its only recent change being the firmware update) or PSN itself.

I kinda need it to connect, to play online and stream on Twitch…

  • Why did you (psn), change the notification , i m sure that nobody ask for that . i like it the way it was .i wanna be able to delete what i have seen ,there is a million thing you can changed before the notification options . Please bring it back like it was before .

  • The smartphone icon was a huge mistake for me. How can I actually just appear offline now, can I just delete the ps app? Any way to go back to the way it was? Also the notifications window over simplification is another thing that did not need to change.

  • Is update 4.50 available online yet? So I can download it on a usb drive. I can’t seem to locate it.

  • I’m curious.

The external USB will be reformatted by the PS4 and it says it’ll only transfer games. Will you still be able to use it as a drive with your computer? Can you use it to play music on the PS4? Add videos or transfer stuff, like pictures and other capture data, out of the PS4? Or will it become a dedicated device to restricted functions?

  • Great update. Loving the external storage support. Now we just need to make folders in our library.

  • Any optimization for sub applications like the music player since it causes tons of menu lag also media player still has consistent crashes and slowly dies overtime.

  • Please fix the notification. That is one disgusting layout. Everything is all cramped up and i cant delete anything! There are notifications that are showing from the past that i remember deleting. Now i cant delete them. what the hell playstation… everything else is dope, but instead of keeping notifications organize and clean, “lets just crumble it up”

  • Really on my off day guys 390 some mbs and it’s gonna take 8 hours

  • This update made my PS4 not work before the update everything was working after i click updated and it finished it made my HDMI stop workingI highly doubt it cuz it went bad Becuase of how fine it was working before the update

  • I like this new update but I hate the new notification system

  • Hey, with this new update both me and my brother cant remove notifications? Whats up with that. Is this a bug or part of the new update. If it is part of the new update, then It seriously sucks. Please fix the notification bug. Its very obnoxious to have to look at all these notifications and not be able to clear them. Seriously. Bring back the old notification center. It does not look like the old one. I want to be able to play on my ps4 without having my ocd bothering me so much. FIX IT.

  • Anyone else having a problem getting apps to work? I had to download this morning and now nothing works. Netflix, amazon, youtube, hulu, vudu, and internet explorer all freeze and won’t let me maneuver within the apps. I tried uninstalling and putting them back on but it won’t even let me choose to sign in.

  • I just bought a 4TB External drive and just realizing you can’t keep another partition for other stuff. It forms the WHOLE drive? Is there a way to have 2 partitions on the external?

  • Why can’t Sony get it so all movies, and games render their sound with virtual surround sound speakers through the headphones when playing in Cinematic mode on the PSVR. The hardware can do it fine for VR games, so it really should not be too much trouble to render a virtual 5.1 or 7.1 soundstage in Cinematic mode.

FW 4.50 still renders all movies in plain stereo and only some games (like Infamous First Light) render the sound in surround through the headphones. Most other games like Tomb Raider ROTR also only do boring plain stereo.

  • Can I turn off ps4 while hard drive is still connected or should I disconnect bar drive first
Also can I download onto hard drive while in sleep mode? Like start a download and put ps4 on sleep mode over night?

  • I know I’m the only one that thinks this me and my friends talk about this all the time y’all should make it so more people can be in a party 8 people isn’t enough

  • So are you guys gonna do anything about members CC info being invalid? When it is in fact, NOT?

  • I started up my ps4, went to youtube, and the app stopped and said I had to update to 4.50.
I did, and now my resolution is completely wonky. Everything is fuzzy. So I went to my settings to make sure I was still at the highest screen resolution and output, and everything was just as I left it. But it doesn’t matter because everything ia fuzzy as hell. Wth happened guys? Anybody else have this problem?

  • Come on with the notifications, not everything needs a fix it was perfectly fine as it was.

  • What in the world did you people do to the notification center?! It’s no longer organized, and I can no longer mark notifications as read. Argh! Bring back the old notification center in version 4.51, please!

  • The mobile icon for offline play can be disabled in the privacy settings in the account management menu.

  • So when can I pop in a PS2 or PS3 disc into the PS4 and have it play. I’LL PAY $500 FOR A PS4 THAT DOES THAT PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • With all the problems everyone seems to be having with this update, I think I’ll disconnect my PS4 from the network and wait for a fix.
