PlayStation Store: July’s Top Downloads

Big winners last month include Crash Bandicoot, Superhot VR, Shadow of Mordor, and The Last of Us.

Justin Massongill's Avatar Posted by Social Media Manager, SIEA

Woah! Crash Bandicoot’s long-awaited N. Sane Trilogy spun to the top of the PS4 download charts last month, followed closely by Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor (there’s still time to catch up before Shadow of War!). The insanely stylish (and just awesome overall) Superhot VR took the top spot for PlayStation VR, which makes sense since the game can, ya know, control the flow of time and everything. Seems like an unfair advantage, to be honest.

Miss any of July’s top games and want to see what the fuss is about? Head to PlayStation Store to pick ’em up!

SuperHot VR! I just had a chance to play this last night and it’s the best VR experience I’ve had thus far. Absolutely in love with it and glad to see it doing well.

Can someone ask Michael Pachter why are GTA games like San Andreas still selling so we’ll?

Glad to see Crash in the number 1 spot!! Such an excellent remaster deserves attention.

I am glad you are calling it a remaster. A lot of people think it is a remake and comparing and complaining unfairly.

It is a remake…Not a re-imagining…But a remake. They remade it, almost exactly as the original 3 were. The physics are slightly difference. Match this to what Bluepoint, and others, had done with bringing Metal Gear Solid, God of War, Gravity Rush, Ico & Shadow of the Colossus, and Uncharted remasters to other platforms, to the upcoming Shadow of the Colossus Remake.

Another example. Ratchet and Clank (PS2), Ratchet and Clank (PS3) Digital Remaster, Ratchet and Clank (PS4) Re-Imagining. If they had kept it exactly the same in level design/abilities/enemies etc…It would have been called a remake. Scene for scene or otherwise, they are remaking it of course…But it was built from the ground up. It’s not Halo collector’s edition, The Secret of Monkey Island HD, or otherwise…

It is a full on developed game on a new engine designed to stay as close as possible to the original in all ways. That…Is “not” a remaster any more than a film would be called a remaster for re-filming all the same shots, rather than digitally touching them up.

Ratchet and Clank is a remake. This was a remaster with minor changes.

    I wish I could edit.

Ratchet and Clank on PS4 is a remake. This was a remaster with minor changes. Based on your examples, it seems you may not know the differences between a remake and remastered.

Are you saying that Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy, which literally has the 3 games fused into one, with a hub world, new features, and non-identical physics, hitboxes, and level design is a remaster? So it’s just like those other remasters I listed above?

It’s just like the Jak Trilogy, Ratchet and Clank Trilogy, Sly Cooper Trilogy, Bioshock Collection, Batman: Return to Arkham, Borderlands: The Handsome Jack Collection, Darksiders 1/2, Dishonored, Loco Roco, Patapon, PaRappa the Rapper, COD4:MW and more…

I don’t know if you’ve played the PS1 titles recently, but they are not the same. They aren’t even on the same physical engine. It was rebuilt from the ground up. They even say it. So…It’s not just a traditional remaster.

It’s not a polished, touched up presentation. It is built entirely from the ground up with brand new assets. Whether or not they followed the template, and chose not to change the level design or not, it’s still a remake. And it doesn’t matter how they advertise it in the PS store or whatnot, probably cause the bean counters at Activision show that “Remasters” sells better than “Remakes” do or something like that.

If you want to be technical, they even added an extra level. One that was originally cut due to time/resources over at Naughty Dog. If this was a touch up, I’d agree with you…But it is clearly much more than that, considering they built it from the ground up using the template of the original games to keep it as close to the original design as possible, since the gameplay was essential to the experience, and messing with that would have been a different game.

    (CONCLUDED)

    ……

If they remade Super Mario Bros, and changed the levels around…It wouldn’t be Super Mario Bros. anymore. Remaking it would be using the New Super Mario Bros. Engine, or a newer one than that, and modifying all the physics to be identical to the original, with all the levels, enemies, powerups, and time counters all exactly as they were. If it’s made from the ground up, it’s still a remake.

I always enjoy having conversations about games, almost as much as playing them. Oh that never ending backlog…One day I say, one day…

Not sure why but for the last 2 weeks the All Deals section in Weekly Deals for games always has a navigation error and fails to show All Deals. Also with all the people buying LittleBigPlanet Karting can anyone fix the online so that people in NA can play online? Other regions digital versions have no problem connecting. Can the game be re- uploaded with a different region copy?
