Fortnite Battle Royale Launches September 26

Hop in and test the new 100-player PvP mode now ahead of its official launch.

Donald Mustard's Avatar Posted by Worldwide Creative Director, Epic Games

Hey PlayStation Nation!

We are excited to announce a new mode coming to Fortnite on September 26: Battle Royale. 100 players. One giant map. A battle bus. Fortnite building skills combined with intense PvP combat. The last player standing wins.

Our Battle Royale mode is now in Public Test for Fortnite players and we would love your help testing it.

Just open the game and select Battle Royale. We expect the mode to experience crashing and stability issues during the Public Test.

Wait … What?

Yeah, we made a PvP mode for Fortnite. We love Battle Royale games like PUBG and thought Fortnite would make a great foundation for our own version. A few months ago Epic’s Unreal Tournament team began experimenting with the mode while the original Fortnite team kept updating the core game. To maintain game balance we kept the PvP mode completely separate from the PvE mode. The new Battle Royale mode was so much fun we decided to share it with everyone to get feedback.

This is also a great time for new Fortnite players to jump in, because for one week only (September 12-18) we have a 25% discount on our Standard and Deluxe Edition Founder’s Packs.

Fortnite Battle Royale

We are really excited about Battle Royale and can’t wait for you to play it. This is just the first version of the mode, and we will update Battle Royale and the core Fortnite game throughout Early Access and into launch. We are excited to grow the game with the PlayStation community. Thank you for joining us on the adventure.

The battle is building. Good luck!

Been playing PUBG with some friends and I always tell them I would love a game like this but with Fortnite Art Style it would be the best :) and now I get to play it!!

This game is a really pay to power game. I really hate the idea of combining this with a pubg style pvp, it would literally be pay to win at that point as almost all the loot in this game is locked behind microtransaction loot boxes.

In Fortnite Battle Royale we will not sell gameplay-affecting items. We are considering offering cosmetic or compendium like item.

It says you start with just a pickaxe, so it seems entirely separate from your PvE character and items.

Game’s still in early access and devs have said themselves that it’s got a ways to go. Adding an entire new mode just to cash in on the success of PUBG seems…well, let me just say I’m glad I didn’t drop $40 on it. I really hoped Fortnite would turn out better.

To clarify, the Unreal Tournament team here at Epic were the ones to craft this mode, while the core Fortnite team continued to work on the PvE campaign. After some internal playtesting, we loved the mode so much that we knew we had to get it into the player’s hands. You’re right, we do have things to work on but we just got started in Early Access… we have just begun the awesome journey that is Fortnite!

I see nothing wrong with this update PUBG shouldn’t be the only game to offer this type of gameplay.

I have a founders pack and plus on my account, would a sub account on my PS4 be able to play this without their own founder purchase?

I have the same question. Does someone here has the answer? I’m thinking of getting the founders pack for my daughter but it would have to be done from my account.

As long as the account you purchased it on has a PS+ subscription the PS4 set as their primary console, any other accounts on the machine should be able to access the game and play online.

    Hey Eazy,

Like I mentioned above, the core Fortnite team is still focusing on the PvE experience for players. The Unreal Tournament team were actually the ones who created Battle Royale, allowing us to finally capture a PvP mode for Fortnite.

    Hope this helps!

Ive played at least 20 matches now. The game node is really fun and im glad i get the chance to play it! PS4 has no pubg/h1z1/dayz type games, so you guys are the 1st to market. I have high hopes for the game, and I hope that squads get added soon.

Also, I would like to be able to get rewards from battle royale, that I can use in pve, like loot llamas, exclusive heroes, boosts, etc…

I think this game, as it is, looks great, and i’ve been tracking its development for years now. And I’m looking forward to playing this upon release. But I can’t help feel bad for PlayerUnknown. I know he’s made a lot of money off his game, but to have a studio with a bigger budget and more resources pivot to create basically the same game but within their world 6 months after the release of his game feels a bit cheap. The thing is, looking at this, I’d probably get this game instead of PUBG because I prefer games with this art style, which makes me feel sad that I’d skip PUBG. I think maybe because it is so close to the release of PUBG that it feels off? And when you say that its part of the battle royale genre, you only offer up PUBG as a game of that genre, so basically what you’re saying is you’re making PUBG within Fortnite. Are there other examples of games like this (I honestly don’t know, I’ve been away from the gaming scene for a while) that you could give as inspiration or is it simply putting PUBG into Fortnite?

I wish you guys the best of luck with development as it does look like a really fun game and chances are I will be playing it in the near future.

Sorry, I don’t want to come off as insensitive, because I do think this game looks great. I just felt that it was important to bring up this point and, look, i could be way off base but I wanted to hear opinions on this nonetheless.

You’re not “insensitive”. I completely agree with your “analysis” (except for the part about skipping PUBG for this, because unlike you I prefer PUBG “art style” over Fortnite’s =P).

Epic is still recovering from the blow received from Blizzard, with the whole Paragon Vs. Overwatch debacle. So they’re obviously are trying to COPY PUBG. Fortnite IS NOT a game suitable for this kind of “genre” IMO. So they’re just forcing this new Mode into the game…because thanks to PUBG that’s where the money is ATM.

FYI I’m not blaming Epic. They’re doing what’s best for their studio. But that doesn’t mean we’re going to LIE about it. They ARE “stealing” PUBG’s concept & idea and recreating it inside their new game.

I still think what they’re charging for those dumb “Founder’s Packs” is ridiculous. Especially for a game that it’s not even “100% complete” yet. So I wish them luck…but I’ll be waiting for the F2P version next year…or a HUGE discount for…IDK…Black Friday? ;)

As I said I prefer “realistic” graphics over cartoonish ones so if it comes to Battle Royale, I’m going with PUBG or sometihng on those lines. But I do love the PvE aspect of Fortnite. But not at that price point.

Anyway…sorry for the digression and kudos for your on-point analysis. =P

I probably won’t skip PUBG thinking more about it. Will have more friends playing on there I would assume. But I will still go to Fortnite once it becomes F2P, if only for the original game mode I want to play.

To be fair, PUBG was not the first in it’s genre. Also, PUBG will not be on PS4 anytime soon.

Hey, I think the game looks really good. And it really isn’t just a copy of PUBG, I mean the game mode is in multiple other games, and was in H1Z1 before PUBG I’m pretty sure. Also, this game is appealing to the PS4 market. I don’t have a pc that can run the games like this, and I am very excited to be able to play them on PS4. I think the game is totally suited for it, and love the art style that comes with it. I am so excited for the chance to play a battle royale, and Fortnite is giving me a chance to.

Sorry on the double post, everyone. Stupid WordPress made a mistake (due to a “your message is too long” crap) and did a reset on the reply so initially it went as a standalone post instead of a reply, like it should’ve been.

Sony needs to give us more control over our posts already. It’s been forever that we’ve been without an Edit and/or Delete option!

Paragon is not even in the same ballpark as Overwatch. Overwatch, a hero shooter; also not the first of its kind. Nor is PUBG the first of its kind. Not sure what blow from Blizzard you’re speaking of..?. Paragon is an actively evolving MOBA.

Founders pack? You’re paying for early access and you get items. Yeah, it will be F2P eventually. Without the founders pack support, the game wouldn’t go as far as it has and/or will.

Worth nothing, the same goes for the currently in early access PUBG. You’re paying for development of a game that wouldn’t otherwise receive the funding.

Canny and Twine are unfinished but you’re adding pvp…Finish the main game first, then add new modes. If another team worked on it, ask them to kindly work on canny instead. And I look at H1Z1 and how pvp killed the pve mode in that game and wonder if the same will happen here.

Would have been cool to create a game that’s a bit more realistic with this similar theme of Battle Royale survival. This one seems a bit too cartoonish for me. Regardless I hope it’s a success for you guys.

Hey Chri, been eyeing the game since EA release…took the plunge this last weekend and bought the standard at reduced price, fell in love and upgraded to deluxe. Got 3 friends on the train aswell (after shareplay and a few hours of nagging) and i just love the game…BUT add squad fast as hell. Because you got some great potential in BR together with building (one of a kind) but there is no time to build when 99 players try and kill you.

I hope squads and a build/defend mode gets released within weeks (hell..do it as an open beta) and the most awesome thing you could add would be a 100 player free build mode…imagine the creativity from the communitt.

Just do it man….

P.S promote the game more..
