Say Hello to Your MLB The Show 18 Cover Athlete: Aaron Judge

Plus, full details on available editions and pre-order bonuses.

Ramone Russell's Avatar Posted by Sr. Community Specialist & Game Designer, San Diego Studio

Making his MLB debut with the New York Yankees in 2016, Aaron Judge hit a home run during his career’s first at bat, but this was only the beginning. Judge went on to have a record-breaking rookie season in 2017, was named an All-Star, and won the Home Run Derby, overcoming a brutal 22 homer first-round and hitting a total of 47 throughout the derby. 16 of those with exit velocities of 115 mph or harder and a few 500+ foot blasts.

His homer off the roof of Marlin Stadium even defies physics and scientific calculations!

To add to his already massive resume, Judge has hit 52 home runs as a rookie, breaking legendary Mark McGwire’s MLB rookie record of 49; and also hit 33 home runs at Yankee Stadium, breaking the record of 32 set by legend Babe Ruth in 1921. This rookie is the living, breathing example of Road to the Show – create a player with massive stats and trek on to becoming a legend – which is why we are proud to announce him as the cover athlete for The Show 18.

MLB The Show 18 Box Art

In addition to The Judge gracing the US cover, for Canadians, we’re happy to announce the exclusive Canadian cover of MLB The Show 18 featuring Marcus Stroman!

MLB The Show 18: Canadian Box Art

Stroman was drafted in the 1st round in the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays and made his Major League debut on May 6, 2014 and made his first Major League start on May 31, 2014, pitching six innings and surrendered only one earned run on five hits, striking out six and issuing no walks to earn the win over the Kansas City Royals.

A fan favorite, he is known for his grit and determination. He has dedicated his life to overcoming obstacles and showing people that greatness isn’t measured in what others think of you; what’s important is who you think you are and working hard to achieve your goals.

-_- this kind of “pre-orders” bonuses annoy me so much. i just want everything

All these pre-order “bonuses” do is kinda advertise that this game is gonna be loaded up the gazoo with microtransactions. That’s the impression it left with me. I’d be pleased to be corrected that MTs are absent, but it sure doesn’t seem that way.

I would rather pay $100 per game and own the full game than deal with all this micro transactions and dlc crap.

Should have been one of the Astros on the cover

Should be Jose Altuve. All I’m gonna say. And as a Sox fan I could say a lot

Should have been one of the Astros. I’m pretty sick of hearing about Judge. Sure the kid can hit home runs but look at his Strike out numbers. In fact why hasn’t Mike Trout been a cover athlete of the Show? If anyone is deserving he is. (I’m not an Angels fan, just a baseball fan tired of the Judge bandwagon)

It’s all marketing. You may be tired of MLB’s marketing but power hitters are always easier to market to the casual fan than pitchers or good fielders or high average hitters or base stealers, etc. I’d guess any fan of the game series will buy it regardless of who is on the cover (5th year in a row with a power hitter on the cover) so why not select a player from the most popular team even if they are also one of the most disliked teams? It might lead to a few more sales and I’d doubt GameStop would be as interested in an exclusive version with an Astros player on it, regardless of how good or well known they may be among baseball fans. The cover of paying the athlete is likely another factor; not entirely sure how that works but the MLB Player’s Union must be involved and I’d bet rookies are less expensive than veterans.

That being said, this is actually only the second time a Yankees player has been on the cover of a Sony baseball game. The last time that occurred was in 1997 when Bernie Williams made the cover of MLB 98.

In 2014, Mike Trout won the AL MVP award with .287-36-111 and 184 strikeouts, 115 runs and .939 OPS. Nowhere near as good as Judge’s 2017 season .284-52-114 with 128 runs and 1.049 OPS. It is a laughable comparison.

Judge should win the MVP Award. He plays solid defense, has a rocket arm, can steal 10 bases, hits 500 foot bombs and puts up insane stats like this… (can’t count Trout OPS when he had only 400 at bats)

2017 League Ranks:
• 1st in AL in HR (52)
• 2nd in AL in RBI (114)
• 1st in AL in R (128)
• 1st in AL in BB (127)
• 1st in AL in SLG (.627)
• 1st in AL in OPS (1.049)

And he is only a rookie and will only get better. All Rise!

We’ll stand after you post his postseason numbers!

    macuto007 said:

The only reason this boy had those numbers was because he was a rookie and most pitchers threw mellons at him in the middle of the zone at the beginning of the season; in simple terms, nobody respected him as they didn’t know him and he capitalised. Part of his slump mid season was because of adjustments the league made to pitch around him and you can see the big difference. He went from superstar to amateur in 5 seconds. His september surge was a contentious point but again, he faced some average pitchers and capitalised on some mistakes (pitches in the middle of the zone).

I doubt he’ll be able to put similar numbers in his sophomore year as the league has found a way to pitch around him (Look at his postseason numbers). And boy does he have a hole in his swing!

I get the publicity and marketing strategy as this boy is gold for mlb, but how can you compare him with someone like Altuve with his consistency not only this season but for the past 4 years! I guess mlb is willing to oversee a unique five tool player (which is very hard to come by) tha just carried his team to a world series championship for a one season wonder slugger sensation.

I think i’ll take a knee and pass on this. After the joke of a launch that was MLB The Show 17 im gonna skip 18 and continue to plaay 17 since i didn’t buy it till mid season.

Here comes the Judge! Guess that leaves me out for the cover. However, since I preordered the game earlier I guess I can still create myself in the game. Or maybe I’ll make a MLB roster? Don’t think so? Ya never know ;)

I bought the MVP digital deluxe. So do I get the (94) Aaron Judge rookie card with that too? I’m hoping they add Tiger Stadium and/or the Field of Dreams Corn Field. Those would be AWESOME!!!

Trust me I love baseball. But am not getting this game. Never had Stankees in my house. Am not going to start now. (Jose Altuve) should of been on there. World series Champs. 2017 baby. Thumps down for me. This cover sucks sticking to my 2017 Show.

Dear mlb the show makers,

As a long time fan of your game, I have bought this game every year since mlb the show 10. I dont mind Aaron Judge as the cover he deserves it. The problem i have is Marcus stroman for the Canadians. Why not a cover for the world champions. Call it world series cover and put either Altuve, your player of the year award winner that won it over Judge or the World series MVP George Springer. If its speinger, a suggestion would be to make it that SI cover picture that they predicted astros would win in 2017 back in 2013. You could start doing that for all mlb the shows going forward, by displaying the world champs on a special cover that way the fans of the game from that city would love to buy that specific game. Just a thought
