God of War Out April 20 on PS4

Watch the new trailer for Santa Monica Studio's eagerly awaited epic, on track for an April release. Plus, full details on the Collector’s Edition, Stone Mason Edition, Digital Deluxe Edition, and preorder bonuses.

People of PlayStation the world over, God of War is launching April 20, 2018.

I would love to write a long blog post here but, apparently, I have a game to get done by 4/20 so I gotta get back to work as soon as possible.

God of War (PS4)

God of War (PS4)God of War (PS4)

First, let me say that this is my favorite release day of my entire career. If I live to be 100, I do not think I will be able to top this release day.

There has been a long journey just to reach this point, so it’s a little bittersweet to think that we are only a few months away from that journey finally coming to an end. While I am sad, I am also excited because it means everyone will get their hands on this crazy adventure we have been crafting for nearly five years!

Speaking of trailers. Yeah, I just lost interest finding an elegant way to get here from the last paragraph so I just went for it. That is just how I roll. I really am ecstatic that I can finally show you this beautiful trailer we have been cooking up in the creative kitchens of Santa Monica Studio headquarters. It will give you more insight on why Kratos and Atreus are going on their journey as well as provide a glimpse at some new bits of action.

I love this trailer. After I saw it, I pre-ordered the game.

So, April 20, 2018…mark the date on your calendar, people. Clear that schedule, tell your significant other they are wonderful, because that is always a nice thing to do, and then wonder what you will do with all that free time you have now that you don’t need to keep asking me when the release date is.

Thank you everyone for your continued support of our game-making addiction. I will do my best to keep sharing information as we head towards launch.

…But wait, there’s more! I’m proud to share our limited Collector’s Editions and Digital Deluxe Edition, whose every component is connected back to the Norse universe and story of our game.

Pre-Order Offer

God of War (PS4) Buckler of the ForgeGod of War (PS4) Elven Soul Shield (1)God of War (PS4) Dökkenshieldr

I should first mention, if you pre-order any edition (or already did) at a supporting retailer, you’ll acquire these three legendary shield skins (which you’ll need internet connectivity to access!) for Kratos to bash and defend against all manner of creatures we created in the brutal Norse wilds.

God of War (PS4) XP Boost GameStop

If you pre-order any edition at GameStop or EB Games, you’ll also receive the Luck of Ages XP Talisman which improves the wearer’s luck, providing:

  • Increase XP gain
  • Increase Hacksilver gain
  • Increase the ability to trigger Perks

God of War (PS4) Collector's Edition

Collector’s Edition | $129.99 USD/$169.99 CAD

The 9’’ statue was crafted by our team in collaboration with the incredible folks at Gentle Giant. The cloth map is a unique companion to your journey, and an art piece on its own. The Huldra Bros carvings pack as much detail as their personas do in game. Just a few of the highlights, not to mention the digital items as well!

God of War (PS4) Stone Mason Edition

Stone Mason Edition | $149.99 USD/$199.99 CAD (EB Games Exclusive in Canada)

Available in the US and Canada only, this edition includes everything in the Collector’s Edition along with four very distinct, rare items directly from the game. You might recognize Atreus’ wooden Horse and Troll carvings from our E3 2016 debut. They complete the collection with the Huldra Bros, btw. The Stone Mason Ring is a finely crafted piece of jewelry, whose story we won’t spoil. The talking Mimir Head keychain may be your personal favorite after you interact with him in game. Massive credit to Gentle Giant capturing the exquisite detail of these!

God of War: Digital Deluxe Edition

Digital Deluxe Edition | $69.99USD/$89.99 CAD

If digital only is king for you, we didn’t forget. Adorn the legendary Death’s Vow Armor Set to increase your strength, and honor the solemn promise that sends Kratos and Atreus on their journey through the Norse wilds of Midgard and beyond. The digital comic book from Dark Horse, Issue #0 starts to unearth the story of Kratos before his quest with Atreus begins. Not to mention both the digital comic and mini art book will come with exclusive creator commentary tracks.

Finally, available to addresses in the US and Canada only, pre-order this Digital Deluxe beauty to get a sweet, exclusive, shiny, limited-run God of War physical pin.

  • $20 extra dollars for those four tiny items seems a bit much, I mean $10 I’d understand but the Collectors edition makes the Stone Mason Edition look like a ripoff.

Can’t wait for this game. What about the original God of War games from PS2 and also PSP. Love to see them as PS2 classics or an HD Collection (hey, could happen, Capcom is bringing the original Devil May Cry Trilogy in HD).

    • They’ve released these already on PS3 in HD and 3D for that matter.

    • dkarlowicz10

I wasn’t asking for a PS3 copies of the classic God of War. I had it on PS2, then the PS3, and then Vita Collection. Now I want it on the PS4 (and no, PS Now does not count).

    First and foremost HELL YESSSSSS!
I already pre-ordered a copy and plan on upgrading to the Stone Mason Edition bit I must say that I am extremely unhappy at the fact that the pin is included ONLY in the digital pre-order. I’m sure I’ll be happy with the game alone which I’ve been looking forward to this game for a long time coming but if I’m shelling out that kinda money, I’d definitely appreciate the pin.

    Stoked as fuvk regardless

    • There had to be some really cool incentive to preorder the digital deluxe edition. You guys that preordered the collector’s editions can’t have everything.

  • IceColdKilla44

Looks good, but I gotta say I’m disappointed that limited edition’s only coming out in Europe. Mainly because of that physical copy of the artbook.

I’d buy the stone mason edition in an instant if its artbook was physical instead of digital.

    • I’m pretty disappointed there isn’t a physical artbook included in the collector’s edition but the enamel pin more than makes up for that IMO.

    • That’s the enamel pin that comes with the digital deluxe edition.

  • -Retailer exclusive XP talisman perks. For a SP game.

-Digital exclusive pin because those paying $150 for a CE don’t deserve the whole package either

-no hardcover art book for a game of this art design caliber, as if those trinkets were more important *??*

That’s just more icing on top of this cake: With that cover art and change in overall direction, this should aptly be called Dad of War since it’s in the vein of TLoU with a kid companion, it’s cinematic presentation and walking-while-talking imitation. I’m all for change but not when it’s trend derivative and not when the basics of the main character is the only thing left unchanged.

With camera so close with vision so cramped that enemies take their turns attacking you like a low budget martial arts movie. Forget hordes and strategically juggling multiple foes like the series signature, this is an intimate casual fest with an axe.

There you go, a few reasons why no CE or pre-order for me.

  • THE-PLASTICA-MAN

I really hope you make those 3 shields not pre-order exclusive. Make them as stand-alone DLCs or through Deluxe Version like Horizon. Please don’t deprive all fans from it.

  • Poj-Ntxoog001

Developers should add airs to his chest he got a Viking looking it make sin

  • Poj-Ntxoog001

Please add body hair I meant to say….

    • It’s funny how he can grow a full beard but manages to get his chest regularly waxed like a model. Way back when.

  • Hooligantuan

Kratos is a Greek mythology fanfic Mary Sue and his popularity is a sad commentary on the intellectual void America’s public school systems are creating of the nation’s youth.

  • This game looks phenomenal, and I’m glad it’s finally within reach. Can’t wait to explore that beautiful world and fight all of those mythical creatures as Kratos.

That being said, they really should have picked a different date, yikes. Now the release is just gonna turn into a drug joke.

  • My only gripe with most Collectors Editions these days, which I think it was Resident Evil 7 did–or maybe Horizon Zero Dawn — is that they came with the original box and the steel book case was empty, I like having the option and the original artwork. It’s weird when you’re going through your collection, or someone else is, and there’s this see of clear or blue plastic and then there’s the redheaded stepchild that sticks out like a sore thumb that’s a steel book. They’re cool to display with your CE but amongst your games looks off. I realize games are trying to go digital and all (Sonic Mania you hose-beast!) but those original boxes are still a work of art.

  • BigNight860

I’m getting both digital deluxe edition to play & physical copy for my collection I can’t wait : )

  • I pre ordered the digital deluxe version, but I didn’t get a download for the dynamic theme anyone know why that is?

    • TheRealSamJohn

Same here I was wondering the same thing

    • Same here. Can someone on the Playstation blog let us know what’s up with the dynamic theme??? I received the avatars.

  • Hi everyone!! I pre ordered mine today at Gamestop along with God of War Collector’s Edition Official Strategy Guide.can’t wait!!!!

  • This would be Awesome in VR. Like Skyrim. Once you have experienced playing in VR it’s HARD to play 2D games. Can’t wait for Bravo Team. This game God of Wars looks good but I’ll wait and hope it comes out in VR. :)

  • Inv1s1ble_Shad0w

Just pre-ordered the Stone Mason Edition. I normally dont geek out over ANY release but this is god of war. God of war on ps2 is one of the reasons I still have hope is this burning down industry marred with microtransactions, lootboxes, day one dlcs, etc. If this game has lootboxes or microtransactions I am going to quit gaming PERIOD.

  • You guys should put the LIMITED Edition, that is actually only avaible to eu costumers, avaible worldwide.

  • rockinjs864

Sorry but if I preorder the $150 edition I’m going to need that pin also. How can any physical item be left out of a collector’s edition?

    • The pin is exclusive to the digital deluxe edition. You can’t have everything yo!!

  • Special edition includes remaster for the HD remastered of God of War 1 & 2 only for 99.99$ limited copies for the indieStationRemastered4pRo.
In these first two remastered^2 titles you will wonder why the hell this dude is slaying everything that is moving in front of him but in the new game he is a loving dad.

  • Please release more stone mason editions for Canada!! They sold out way too quick!

  • Tinkerbell115198

Please release a PS4 Console with Kratos on it

  • RodrigoNieva94

Hello, will the game be available in Spanish in the US store?

  • Unless you want a collector’s edition, the digital deluxe preorder is the best deal in town. Has anyone here preordered the digital deluxe edition and received the enamel pin yet?

Please enter your date of birth.
