PlayStation Plus: Free Games for July 2018

Heavy Rain and Absolver headline July's lineup for PlayStation Plus members. Enjoy!

Update: An earlier version of this post featured an incorrect PS3 title for the July lineup. We have updated the list below with the correct PS3 title for July.

July is almost here and summer is in full swing, so let’s take a look at the July lineup for PS Plus members.

But before we begin, did you watch the E3 showcase? If you happened to miss the news, PS Plus members can get Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 right now as part of your membership. This bonus title is in celebration of the upcoming release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. It’s available from now until July 11.

Now onto games for July!

PS Plus July 2018

First up, we have Heavy Rain. Experience the gripping psychological thriller that is filled with innumerable twists and turns. Spanning four days, hunt a murderer known only as the Origami Killer – named after the calling card they leave behind at crime scenes. Four characters, each following their own leads and with their own motives, must take part in a desperate attempt to prevent the killer from claiming a new victim. How this story ends is entirely up to you.

  • Really not impressed with how this situation with Deception IV was handled. I understand that things are subject to change but an email prior to this would be ideal. Disappointed.

  • I am very disappointed that we are not getting Deception IV:The Nightmare Princess on PS3. I was really looking forward to it. This is horrible. What happened?

  • It’s disapponting that Deception IV was listed in error. I would have rather had that than Extreme Exorcists.

  • What happened to Deception IV: The Nightmare Princess? Shame on you, SONY!

  • Why had no word been given about the sudden change in the ps3 lineup? If the listing of Deception IV truly was a mistake then why did nobody correct it the day the blog post was made? Why wait until the day the lineup went live?

I was looking forewarn to Deveption IV more than any other game on the list and Sony decides to pull it and replace it with a $6 pile of crap at the last minute. They have had this game listed as free for a week. To say that I’m a bit unhappy would be an understatement, and shame on you Sony for just trying to sweep it under the rug. If it was a mistake, fine, but don’t wait a week to do it. At least have Deception as a free game next month, please, you owe everyone who looked foreword to it that much.

  • Was really looking forward to Deception IV, but got real life deception. Well played. Would say I’m surprised at the blog team blunder, but seeing more Cage Crap™ this month I can’t really check here with high expectations. It may not be D4 but at least Extreme Exorcism looks like a neat little game.

  • Extremely poor performance, James. How could you not correct the mistake earlier? You had to do it the day the games dropped. And still took hours. And you didn’t even say the word SORRY even once.

Deception IV was the only game I was looking for this month. It’s possible Deception IV makes the lineup next month, but your horrible handling today will have sucked all the excitement and delight out of it.

  • I think one needs to look no further than the list prices to know why Deception IV: The Nightmare Princess (MSRP $49.99) was replaced with Extreme Exorcism (MSRP $5.99).

Complete bull!! What happened to Deception?? Was highly looking forward to that (along with Zero) and now…. Nope!? I’m more or less happy with my PS+ sub. However, when I’m actually interested in a game… anddddd you just go -cross it out-… at the last minute?! Really? (~_~;) (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

  • What happened to Deception IV?

  • I have NEVER complained about the free offerings from Sony (or Xbox for that matter). But this month Sony screwed a lot of gamers over. First, those that preordered Detroit with the Heavy Rain title for free for the shaft (way to make an extra $10 off them Sony), and now they replace one of the PS3 double A games with a piece of crap cheap indie game (I played it, it’s crap).

Sony, you should be ashamed. You owe us an apology, a $10 refund to anyone who preordered the Detroit bundle to get Heavy Rain free, and DECEPTION IV: THE NIGHTMARE PRINCESS.

  • Gamers, blow this blog up and and make your voice heard, don’t let Sony get away with this.

Seriously, there are a lot of upset people but I can’t seem to find anyone talking about this outside of this blog post. It’s kind of sad that Sony can just get away with this without any news website even acknowledging it, let alone any attention being brought to it elsewhere.

    • yeah, I haven’t seen anyone post about it, either, except a few people on GameSpot’s article’s comments section about the PS Plus lineup for the month. None of the sites are even updating the post with the new title given instead..

  • Add me to the list of upset people. Heavy Rain is good but already own disc copy (imported, because you guys for some reason don’t think Americans are interested in physical copies? ). Deception looked interesting but I guess that’s not happening. It wasn’t for Plus game backlog, I would have zero reason to subscribe to the service.

  • Please blow this blog up. Nightmare Princess is a much better game than Heavy Rain and maybe Abslover (haven’t tried it yet, but i still don’t doubt it). I played it when i could afford PS Now and can vouch its a fun game

  • Boo Sony, you wait to the last minute and then change the lineup. The main game I was actually looking forward to this month was Deception IV

  • I’m really disappointed in the way this month was handled. Sony should still give us Deception IV. I know a lot of people were looking forward to this, including myself.

  • Any reason why Deception got removed and replaced with Extreme Exorcism? Was actually looking forward to playing that one.

  • Ps4 ps+ line up has been updated, even of it is total garbage, but ps3 is still showing last moths (Ghost Recon and Zombie driver, more garbage).

They are not even free anymore, need the ps3 store updated with this months “free” garbage.

    Thanks.

  • IsolationGothic

Deception IV was half the reason I bothered getting PS Plus this July. Just a little disappointed that this didn’t get corrected sooner. It’ll make me less likely to get Plus in the future if bait and switch is going to become common place :/

  • This is upsetting was looking forward to Deception IV. Way to drop the ball on us the last minute.

  • LTSwordmastre360

This is unacceptable. I sat down today to install Deception IV and maybe grab its DLC if it isn’t like the rough experience that Blood Ties was, and OH, LOOK AT THAT! It seems Deception IV was removed and replaced with crap. Great news for Tecmo Koei – I rented Blood Ties and it soured my opinion of the series, I was hoping this month’s free offering would change my mind, but oh well~ Not that I as one singular customer matter, right? I’m just being a whining/entitled baby because me game got taken away ya?

So let’s see, OtherOS ages ago, Fortnite accounts getting locked, still cant change PSN usernames, Xbox 1X does 4K gaming better (see Digital Foundry) and now PS+ is killing its PS3 and Vita lineup, while additionally screwing anyone looking for any semblance of an honourable sendoff. Glad Sony seems to be proud of the Playstation brand – I’m not right now!

  • Damn, I fired up the PS3 and updated the firmware just for Deception IV: The Nightmare Princess. I was really excited for this game but now I’m bummed out.

  • Im pretty mad about Deception being removed. This game is literally why I renewed my plus. Feels like a complete bait and switch moment.

  • Seems like many people are upset about the “Deception IV” issue. Add me to that list.

I’m also disappointed that “Zero Time Dilemma” doesn’t include the PS4 version. You might ask “Zero Time isn’t cross-buy, so why would they include the PS4 version?” And you’d be right. EXCEPT…they did the same thing with “PSYCHO-PASS” in January 2018 and “Grand Kingdom” in February 2018. Neither game is cross-buy, each game was supposed to be Vita only, but PS4 was added.

Considering Deception IV for PS3 was a $49.99 game we all felt deceived in losing, at least giving us the PS4 version of “Zero Time Dilemma” (which costs $39.99) would be a reasonable way to extend the original value lost buy giving us some $7 throwaway game.

Better yet…and especially due to a lack of clear explanation from Sony on why this happened, what they really should do is give us “Deception IV” for PS4/PS3/Vita -AND- “Zero Time Dilemma” for PS4/Vita. THAT would be a magnanimous way for them to garner back some respect and admit “Yeah, okay…we messed up. So here’s how we’re fixing it for our most loyal customers.”

    I won’t hold my breath though…

    • OR … if “Deception IV” was removed because of some issue in Europe, perhaps they could add “The Nonary Games” for PS4/Vita in addition to “Zero Time Dilemma”, so at least we’d have the entire series. (Of course this won’t please people who already own it.)

  • WOW, very disappointing and has been pretty bad for a while now.

  • You ppl complain too much.First you’re all like, thr game selection suck. Then it’s all, well we pay for subscription so its not really free anyway. Ok, first off no one makes you pay jack. You do that of your own free will. Second. These games come at 10 and 20 bucks a pop so when PS Plus costs 10 bucks a month and you g3t 2 or 3 free games each month then they really ARE free. At least one game costs you nothing. So suck it up folks. If you’re that unhappy, don’t subscribe!!!

  • Hot garbage. And $44.99 for 3 months?! You people are smoking crack.
