Resident Evil 2: Collector’s Edition First Look, New Dev Details from Comic-Con

Capcom sheds new light on the development of the long-awaited RE2 remake coming to PS4 in January

Kellen Haney's Avatar Posted by Social Media Specialist, Capcom USA

Just revealed at the Resident Evil panel at San Diego Comic-Con, we have a bunch of new information on Resident Evil 2 straight from the game’s producer, Yoshiaki Hirabayashi!

Resident Evil 2 PS4 box art

Remaking a true classic is no easy feat, but the talented team at Capcom behind the upcoming Resident Evil 2 is certainly up to the challenge. Originally revealed with the “WE DO IT” video that’s become well-known among fans, Hirabayashi explained how this new version of Resident Evil 2 exists because of overwhelming fan demand. This is not just a remake – it’s a complete redesign of Resident Evil 2, including the iconic Raccoon City Police Department and the surrounding Raccoon City.

Speaking of, one of the topics covered was Leon’s younger look in Resident Evil 2. Compared to later entries, the goal was to give him more of a fresh-faced rookie look in contrast to the hero that he becomes later on in the series. Famous for having one of the worst first days on the job in history (they cancelled his welcoming party and everything), a lot of thought was put into how Leon’s new, yet classic, look would work with modern photorealistic graphics. As a result, the team created a physical version of Leon’s costume, using photogrammetry technology to scan his clothes into the game and added minor details and changes afterwards.

Resident Evil 2 isn’t complete without Claire, our hero who comes to Raccoon City searching for her brother Chris. Claire’s updated design uses the same technology, scanning in a real-world costume to capture every last detail of her outfit. The team had quite a bit of discussion on how to design her new look, and how much of it should retain her appearance from the original PlayStation Resident Evil 2. Ultimately, the team decided on an appearance that would line up with the iconic scene of Claire entering Raccoon City on her motorcycle. The team is extremely happy with her final design, and hope you all enjoy it as well!

Resident Evil 2: Claire Redfield

For the city itself, the team put a major focus on two concepts that permeate throughout the game: A sense of wetness, and playing off a fear of the dark. Using the powerful RE Engine, the team has been able to achieve their goal of creating a sense of dread through these visual cues. The events ofˆResident Evil 2 take place on a rainy day in Raccoon City, causing puddles and flooding in parts of the city, while others areas are covered in the grotesque aftermath of clashes with the undead and other terrors lurking in the gloom.

Finally, it’s not Resident Evil 2 without zombies! Hirabayashi and the team discussed how they designed the scourge of undead in the remake. Simply put, they wanted to create something monstrous that you didn’t want to be bitten by! To that end, zombies have been created with the same concepts of wetness and darkness in mind, ensuring that every encounter is just as tense as the one before.

Also revealed at the panel, we’ve got fresh details on a special Resident Evil 2 Collector’s Edition for North America, available at GameStop and EB Games! No Steelbook? Even the RE7 collectors edition came with one.

There a reason why there is no steel book? I wouldn’t really call it a collector’s edition without one

$200 is wayyyy too much for what they’re giving you! $120 is a reasonable price in my honest opinion. Too much digital content. Statue is nice though.

PlayStation, can I get the Digital version of the game with this pack.

I have an external hard drive that’s big and don’t like changing disks anymore.

Thank you.

What’s collectorable about digital codes? Seriously $200 and you couldn’t fit the music and dlc on its own disc? I see $60 for a game, $140 for just an art book and figurine? Get out of town!

No Steelbook No Party. Every major game release should have an Special Edition with just Steelbook and/or Hardcover Artbook (Like the one of Uncharted 4 or Ni no Kuni 2).

Would consider the collector’s edition but not if its Gamestop only, I’ll just go digital.

Gamestop? No thank you. I won’t shop there. Oh well I guess it’s the regular edition for me from somewhere else.

Collector’s Editions are not what they used to be. They now reflect the sad state the gaming industry is in today: greed.

As soon as I saw “Only @ Gamestop,” I knew I wasn’t going to get the CE. And even if it wasn’t $200 is way too pricey. The thing to do, if you are a really big RE fan, is just wait. More than likely the price of the CE will plummet a few months after release.

Retailer exclusive editions are just plain bad business, since you are dramatically limiting how many boxes you’re going to be able to sell. Soooo, good work. This CE is absurdly overpriced though,. so ultimately it probably won’t sell all that great anyway. :)

200, yea right. Other remakes 30-40bucks, but because we’re nostalgic you’ll pay like a dumb-A. I think about paying 60 bucks for a new ps4 game. Sony, stop trying to milk us for our money. Ps plus, com on. I already own all the good games on my ps3.

A special edition that does not include The Season Pass ? What a joke. Keep the steelbooks, they are a dime a dozen now.
And to S.C.E.A. : Playstation Plus is the biggest scam in gaming history. It is useless. No discounts on new games. No discounts on new DLC. It is a cash grab. Give us a online only version. Take this as valuable feedback from a loyal customer from ‘97.
