Introducing PlayStation Classic, with 20 Pre-Loaded Games

Featuring Final Fantasy VII, Tekken 3, Wild Arms and 17 other legendary titles, the new mini-console launches December 3 at an MSRP of $99.99 (CAD$129.99).

PlayStation Classic

Almost 25 years ago, the original PlayStation was introduced to the world. Developed by Sony Computer Entertainment, it was the first home console in video game history to ship 100 million units worldwide, offering consumers a chance to play games with real-time 3D rendered graphics in their homes.

Today, we are excited to announce that we are bringing back the original PlayStation experience in a new miniaturized version – PlayStation Classic! The console will come pre-loaded with 20 classic titles, including fan-favorites such as Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms.

The mini console is approximately 45% smaller than the original PlayStation, and it emulates the original’s look and feel by featuring similar controllers and packaging. Long-time fans will appreciate the nostalgia that comes with rediscovering the games they know and love, while gamers who might be new to the platform can enjoy the groundbreaking PlayStation console experience that started it all. All of the pre-loaded games will be playable in their original format.

PlayStation Classic

Available for pre-order at select retailers across the US and CAN, each unit will also come with an HDMI cable to connect to their TV, a USB cable, and two controllers for local multiplayer within compatible titles. PlayStation Classic will be available for $99.99 USD (MSRP) / $129.99 CAN (MSRP) on December 3, 2018 – a historic date for all of us at PlayStation.

Visit PlayStation.com for more details on regional availability, and stay tuned to the Blog for the full lineup of titles coming to PlayStation Classic. There are more fan favorites, and we can’t wait to share more details in the coming months.

  • How about bringing on: the Tomb Raider 4 The Last Revelation, Gran Turismo, Music 2000, Dune 2000, Metal Gear Solid

  • What about Capcom vs SNK Pro thats a good multiplayer game

  • I did like my old phone but I only hade game’s that probably not that popular back then for example Hogs of war and speed freaks plus blood omen and jade cacoon. But I’d love Sony to bring a console with both PS1 and PS2 games, but much much better games than the rubbish ps2 games for ps4 like silent hill soul Calabar 3 and my favourite timesplitters

  • There are so many good gamesfor the PS1 how can you only choose 20?? I neeeeeed more!!

  • There are so many good games for the PS1 how can you only choose 20?? I neeeeeed more!!

  • They probably won’t, but secretly hoping for Tomb Raider so I may lock my butler in the pantry and watch him try and escape.

  • So, can we determine what games will and won’t come out on this based on the included controllers? So no Metal Gear, no Crash Bandicoot, No RE2, etc. ? All of those games came out after the Dual Shock was released. We should expect games from within the first 2 years, I would guess!

  • Hello Sony,

Will this perform an upscaling (to ideally 1080p)?

    Thanks

  • AC ADAPTOR SOLD SEPERATELY? OK Nintendo wannabes. That’s one slimy business practise. But I’ve come to expect this crap from Sony. I mean we have to give them an extra $70 a year to play online and get NOTHING ELSE. Free games aren’t free because you don’t get to keep them. Now they want people to buy their AC adaptor for an irrelevant nostalgia targeting rip off? Good grief. I’m going to PC next generation. PlayStation has become a sespool of scum and highway robbery.

    • Couldn’t agree more, love the Nintendo wannabe line. This money grab makes me sad, as I love their exclusive characters too much to jump ship. Grrrrr.

  • Will this unit perform some sort of upscaling? Back the day, the unit had an output resolution of 480i. Will this have ie. 1080p?

    Thanks

  • $100 and doesn’t even have included the ac adapter? Damn, you cheap bastards

  • No DOOM, Duke Nukem or any football game = No Sale.

  • Dragon quest 7 (Dragon warrior 7 in west) must be included.

  • * A compatible USB AC adaptor (not included) is required to use this console. Use an AC adaptor that supports 5 V, 1.0 A USB (Type A) output

Are you serious!?! $100 and they don’t include something that is required? GTFO

  • I am so excited for this console. Oh you guys should release a CD with more games on it please!!!!

  • road rash that game was awesome and can’t get it for the playstation 3 as a classic re done.

  • road rash was an awesome game played for hours. Can’t get it for the playstation3 as a remake classic.

  • You’re better off buying a raspberry pi3, setting up Retropie and loading games on it.

  • I have the same question that most of us do why can’t I just buy these on PSN I have a PS4 I’d love to play them right now

  • Resident evil 1 and 2 and of command and conquer redalert2 on ps was the best link up game of it’s time

  • Ok.. What’s behind the aux door in the back?

  • Sony Playstation copy again Nintendo …. PS1 a SNES CD.. PS1 clasic a SNES mini??? SoC Allwinner R16 ARM whit GPU Mali400Mp2

  • If it allows me to play my library of digital PS One games, then I’ll buy it. Those games have been sitting on my PS3/PSP, unable to be played on current gen hardware.

  • I think we’re all saying the same thing: which games are included?… and Only 20?

  • I think it is the best news I’m while. First playstation was a legend and now it has HDMI. Cool.

I have question. There is playstation 2. When ps2 was realeased, it could do only composite, svideo, component and scart rgb with sync on composite or sync taken from Luma Y. Professional Sony RGB MONITORS could show RGB signal- the way game was supposed to look in RGB ,but most folks could not enjoy rgb because they did not know how to connect it.

Can Sony make PS2 model which has HDMI video output think that ps2 with HDMI would be really hit, many folks would want to be ably to connect natively ps2 through HDMI.

  • My favorite is Metal Gear Solid!!! Would like to see Gran Turismo, Ape Escape, Wipeout XL, Crash Bandicoot, Sypro the Dragon, Tomb Raider, Armored Core, Ace Combat, Final Fantasy 7, 8, and 9.

  • You can produce a new system with these games already ore loaded into it but you can’t make the ps1 classics available to buy on the ps store!? So stupid. If your consoles weren’t expensive enough as it is, let’s make our fan base buy something completely different. On the ps store there should be a section for ps1 classics, ps2 classics and PS3 classics… I’d end up buying half the games on this system for the amount that the system would cost. Listen to your fan base and get some good customer service…

  • Worth reading the comments on this post just to see people reminisce about the PS1 classics they love. Lot of great titles I’d be happy to see on this mini console.

  • Eventhough this Playstation Classic Edition doesn’t look like it’ll be able to read any PS1 disks formatted Games but I hope Sony can use this blog as an idea for if they could make a digitally downloaded version of these 20 games and I don’t mean by PS Now to go on the PS4,PS4 Pro,and pending whenever the PS5 comes out just like the way Bandai Namco made the Namco Museum for the PS2 and I better hope games like Metal Gear Solid,Spider-Man 2000,Grand Turismo, and maybe even Ape Escape if that Remaster turns into fake news in 2019
just like I heaven’t seen any remastered gameplay to MediEvil this overall year but I remembered Sony Computer Entertainment announced they’d be remastering that in this year.

  • This is so pointless.. Why not just get yourself an original playstation if you want to play it? Since these games are technically digital… why not buy them on your current console? It makes no sense to spend this kind of money on a silly novelty with limited games.

    • Most modern TVs simply don’t support component inputs or 240p/480i resolution images.

Combine that with the fact you get two USB controllers, or even look at it like $5/game for 20 games, it’s still a fun Christmas gift.

    • That’s a fair point @foomman – my stance on it though is, they sell converter boxes for far cheaper than this little guy. To me it doesn’t make much sense because it’s still far cheaper to buy an original console plus the games you want. You’re not taking a gamble on a random assortment amount of games that you’ll never be able to change out once you finish them. If it was cheaper, then sure, it’d be a neat little thing to fiddle with, but for $99, it doesn’t make sense to pay that kind of money for something like this. You could easily buy all of those games and more on the PS Store right now and play them on the PS3, PS4, Vita, PS Vita TV and even the PSP.

    • @foomman: Wrong. Ps2 with component cable, with the aid of a small app, the PS2 outputs from 240p to 1080p!

  • Metal Gear Solid! If that were included alongside Resident Evil 2 that would be incredible.

  • I absolutely loved this!!! But… What is the point of buying this and not being able to play our favorite games of that gen? Just of the top of my head I can think of a lot of them. Here goes: Crash 1, 2, 3 and Team Racing, 2 Xtreme, Spyro, Gex: Enter The Gecko, Metal Gear Solid, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1, 2, 3 and 4, Grand Turismo 2, Tomb Raider 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, Medal of Honor, Grand Theft Auto 2, Jackie Chan Stuntmaster, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Worms: Armageddon, etc.

  • Cool cool, usb controllers. Why not just purchase one of ebay, and enjoy emulators for less then a tenth of the price.

  • If it comes with the game “Board Game: Top Shop” I’ll buy one no questions asked.

  • One more thing should add a adapter using any adapter can damage the system better to supply us with one to be on the safe side and no upset customers sell controller like a duel shock or joystick for fighting games

  • Need full list of game line up
    Can’t wait any longer……need list

  • It will be interesting to see if people are able to add games to this like people were able to add more games to the NES and SNES classic. Even if adding games to those two were unofficial.

  • Awesome news! Definitely a day one purchase for me. However, Sony should generate a user poll to determine at least 5 of the selected games. I’d love if they included:

    -Mortal Kombat Trilogy
    -Legend of Dragoon
    -Final Fantasy 8
    -Medievil
    -Castlevania
    -Gex
    -Jet Moto
    -Syphon Filter
    -Toshinden

Can’t wait for the inevitable PS2 classic!

  • Please add the following games:
    MegaMan Legends 1 & 2
Every Star Wars game made for PS1
    Army Men Sarge’s Heroes
    Croc 1 & 2
    Xena: Warrior Princess
    Yu-Gi-Oh: Forbidden Memories

  • I’d much rather a retro console exclusively featuring PS1 RPGs not available on PSN. Already own FF7 on PS3 and PS4, Wild Arms on PS3. Not interested in the other 3 games announced.

  • Also, Policenauts and Snatcher. I’d pay $100 for just the two of them

  • Please add Bushido Blade to PlayStation Classic.

  • This excellent option for nostalgia, but it would have been much better to launch the retrocompatibility in the PS4 with the PS1 games we already have purchased by PSN, simply that the emulator has special functions such as giving more resolution, DVR, or Screenshots, it didn’t matter if I didn’t have trophies. It would have been a great attraction.

  • Make it 50 games and that will sell like hotcakes.

  • PS One became well know because of massive JRPG and adventures games. For us consumers, we need games that should be installed and worth to play in the PS One classic. Here are my suggestions for the remaining 15 games.

I put an asterisk for my suggestion.

RPG Games (Need to install atleast 7 games)(Parasite Eve, Legend of Dragoon and Xenogears is a must)
    – Alundra 1 & 2
    – Arc the Lad 1, 2, 3
    – Breath of Fire III & IV *
    – Chrono Cross *
    – Final Fantasy VIII, IX *
    – Front Mission 2 & 3
    – Grandia
    – Lunar Silver Star Story 1 & 2
    – Parasite Eve 1 & 2*
    – Persona 2
    – Saga Frontier 1 & 2
    – Star Ocean: The 2nd Story
    – Suikoden 1 & 2 *
    – Tales of Destiny 1 & 2
    – The Legend of Dragoon *
    – Threads of Fate
    – Valkyrie Profile
    – Vagrant Story *
    – Wild Arms 2
    – Xenogears *

    Adventure/Horror games (Atleast 4 games)
    – Castlevania Chronicles
    – Castlevania Symphony of the night *
    – Dino Crisis 1 & 2 *
    – Fear Effect 1 & 2 *
    – Resident Evil 1, 2 & 3 *
    – Silent Hill

Other Games Racing/Kids Games (Atleast 4 games)
    – Armored Core*
    – Wipeout *
    – GrandTurismo 1 & 2 *
    – XCOM UFO Defense
    – Other classic games *

Please lessen the kids games to 2 games.

  • Need some Tenchu on there for sure.

  • I still have my PS1, don’t know if it’s working!! I should give it a try.

  • $120 (100 US) for 20 games is $6 per game (5 US). Not sure how tou can complain about paying $6 (or 5) for each game.

But I absolutely agree not to buy anything that literally doesn’t include everything you need to even turn it on. It comes with two controllers but the power supply is extra? Gimme a break.

  • I want to see THE LEGACY OF KAIN: SOUL REAVER and NIGHTMARE CREATURES II
