First Look at Borderlands 2 VR, Launching December 14

How Gearbox brought the acclaimed shooter-looter (shlooter?) to PlayStation VR.

Hello, travelers! Today marks the first day that we can finally talk about Borderlands 2 VR! It’s a moment we think will have fans joy-puking their faces off.

It all starts December 14, when Borderlands 2 VR launches on PS VR. And we didn’t just cram Borderlands into a headset and call it a day – we did copious research into how VR plays best to update the experience so you can now fully sink your eyes into the wild and mayhem-filled world of Pandora with new VR-specific mechanics and skills!

As soon as we brought the game to PS4 as part of The Handsome Collection in 2016, our brains immediately began cranking on how we could bring the experience to VR and take advantage of PS VR’s capabilities. We all have spent years immersed in the world and these characters, so we were excited to utilize the PS VR to bring everyone in even deeper.

The biggest new feature of Borderlands 2 VR is our take on bullet-time, called “BAMF Time” (or “BadAss Mega Fun Time” if you’re not into the whole brevity thing). Activating BAMF Time will give you the speed and reflexes of a rabid skag, allowing you to dodge bullets, pull off 360 no-scope headshots, and even use your Action Skill to fight off hordes of bandits, bullymongs, and whatever else Pandora might throw at you.

The original four playable Vault Hunters from Borderlands 2 are back, along with their special abilities and BAMF-modified skill trees. We added in BAMF Time upgrades to previous abilities, like Zer0’s “Death Mark,” which marks targets for additional damage but now also restores two seconds of BAMF Time per marked kill.

And since Borderlands 2 VR is a single-player experience, we updated previous skills that relied on a co-op partner, such as Maya’s “Res” ability, which now is called “Empathy” – causing Phaselock to deplete half your current health, damaging enemies based on how much health you lost, and doubling healing during BAMF Time.

Another new twist you’ll find in Borderlands 2 VR is the fact that for the first time ever, you’ll be driving vehicles and racking up the roadkill count from a first-person perspective. While accelerating and steering with the PlayStation Move motion controllers, players will be able to aim the vehicle’s guns with their headset. Experience firsthand the sublime exhilaration of driving one way and looking another! Lose yourself in the roar of the engine, the Pandoran landscape, the wind and viscera in your hair as you mow down your enemies—all from the comfort of your own home!

We first introduced the lawless and chaotic world of Pandora with Borderlands in 2009; and with Borderlands 2 in 2012, we set out to deliver more guns, more action, and even more awesome. The response from the community was overwhelming and humbling. We think it’s that mix of action, humor, style, and heart that added up to Borderlands’ own brand of fun. To now bring that spicy special sauce up-close-and-personal in a VR world is beyond what we could have ever hoped for all those years ago.

    Also, it really should have had PS Aim Support. That would have sealed the deal for me (even without co-op).

Lost my mind with excitement until I read “single player experience”. Hard pass for me. Would have been my most anticipated VR game otherwise.

Had me until only mentioning Move controllers. Why no Aim support? It’s only one of the best peripherals ever created and perfect for this game.

Is this a stand-alone experience? Or a title update / patch to The Handsome Collection? Any details on the price? Are Gaige and Kreig not included? Are the DLC’s included?

With the support of VR have other concessions been made? Similar to how the concurrent enemy count was reduced in the Vita version?

Chalk me down as another +1 for Aim support! Borderlands was the first game that came to mind after polishing off Farpoint, and I’ve been wanting this to happen ever since. Pre-ordering the game anyway, but I think everyone knows Borderlands and Aim were practically made for each other! Come on, Gearbox! Don’t leave us hanging! <3

Between my wife’s games and my own, we already own BL2 on every platform it launched for.. We were both super hyped for BL2VR until seeing it will be single-player only. It’s always been our favorite co-op game. Without co-op it’s a hard pass from us.

    Limits are limits VR doesn’t play well with flat games at least in this gen. I’d sacrifice a goat for 2 player co op and aim support tho!

Never been so happy and then absolutely gutted!! I have had many discussions in the FWZH lobbies about how BL is the perfect fit for PSVR. I have hoped that gearbox would make this happen. I have completed every BL title in co-op with my wife and ALSO 2nd play through including the fantastic DLC. I believe I have purchased BL2 5 times now and was fully prepared to purchase it again. I would also have purchased a second PSVR and AIM in order that myself and wife could play it a third time in VR. I firmly believe that it’s only a matter of time before VR is the norm and “flat” games are in the cupboard beside the Atari!

I understand that this is your first go at bringing BL into VR and I am really grateful that you have however I cannot help but feel that BL without my significant other will remove my wish to play it. My other concern is the lack of AIM support, I understand that there are limitations if the AIM is the chosen method of control, no dual wield, but after playing Farpoint, Arizona, DoomVFR and a ridiculous amount of FWZH I cannot understand why one wouldn’t use this outstanding peripheral as their default. I will remain as open minded as possible and wait for reviews at launch but I really hope that COOP and AIM support are something that happen in the future to either this or BLHJC VR!! I just pray that BL3 retains it’s COOP.

I’m guessing this is a standalone game rather than an update to the original game. If that’s the case it’s an automatic pass.

While you’re at it you should remaster Borderlands 1 and announce Borderlands 3 since we know you’re working on it.

Ok, so it’s controlled with the two move controllers (got those) but… how do we actually walk around considering it has no analogs? Or am I missing something, because I’m sure it’s not an on rails game.

Great that it is 1 player only! Never have time for co-op anyway. A high dose shot of Borderlands in VR whenever I want to is exactly what I want !

I will buy this game because I am a hardcore Borderlands fan, but I will be honest and say I am disappointed that there is no co-op. Borderlands as an experience is built on co-op. Even the PS Vita version had 2 player.

I feel like between this and the lack of transparency about a third installment, Borderlands fans are losing some of their goodwill towards this series.

Removing COOP from the game is a huge deal breaker. Are you guys out of your mind? Why the hell would you do something like that.
Also not having Aim support is a damn shame…

Our beloved psvr, which people often fear will die or not be supported, gets a gift from the gods in the form of another AAA title like Borderlands 2 turnt into a VR wonderland and everyone on here is complaining about what’s missing and how they won’t buy it. This game is the best Christmas gift I could’ve asked for. I can’t wait to walk around (and drive!) in the world of Borderlands.

I’ll probably end up buying it, but I can’t say I’m not disappointed that there’s no AIM support. You can’t tell me it’s impossible to just drive with the analog sticks instead with it. Especially since you aim by looking while driving.

AIM is so excellent for FPS games in VR. I don’t care if dual wielding is janky with it, it more than makes up for it with everything else. And there’s not a whole lot of dual wielding in this as I recall anyway.

    The psvr supports multiple input devices you can use an aim for shooting and a ds4 for driving if the devs choose to do it.

I want this so bad! It atleast needs aim support tho, just use the honor and duty:d day control scheme: aim for shooting and a controller for vehicles. Co op will be missed as well I’d buy 2 so me and my bro can play together damnit first world problems!
