PSN Online ID Change Feature Entering PlayStation Preview Program Soon

Preview program to kick off soon, with full rollout for all PS4 users planned for early 2019.

Update: Read this post for the latest information and details on the online ID change feature.

We’re happy to announce that we will soon begin testing the long-awaited feature that will allow users to change their PlayStation Network Online ID from their PlayStation 4 system. The PSN Online ID Change feature beta will be a part of the PlayStation Preview Program, and will become available to select users that have pre-registered as testers for previous PS4 system software betas.

During the preview program, you will be able to change your online ID as many times as you want. The first change is free, and changes after that will cost $9.99 USD / CAD. For PlayStation Plus members, it will cost $4.99 USD/ CAD after the first change. Changes to online ID can be made through the Settings menu or via the Profile page of your PS4.

When you change your online ID, you will have the option to display your previous ID with your new ID, so your friends can recognize you. Once you decide to display your old ID or not, you won’t be able to adjust this after completing the online ID change process.

This feature is compatible with PS4 games originally published after April 1, 2018, and a large majority of the most-played PS4 games that were released before this date. However, please note not all games and applications for PS4, PS3 and PS Vita systems are guaranteed to support the online ID change, and users may occasionally encounter issues or errors in certain games. If for any reason you experience issues after changing your ID, you can revert back to your original ID for free at any time (you will only be able to revert once during the preview program). Reverting back to an old ID will resolve most issues caused by the ID change. In addition, when this feature officially launches, a list of compatible games published before April 1, 2018, will be provided on PlayStation.com for reference before you make a change.

The preview program for this feature is scheduled to conclude at the end of November 2018. The full rollout of the feature to all PS4 owners is planned for early 2019, so stay tuned for updates down the road!

  • Bu Özelliğin Gelmesi Harika Oldu
Yıllardır PlayStation’da Geliesi Tek İstediğim Özellik Buydu :)

  • Thank you so much I have been wanting to change my username for the longest time since 3 years ago.

  • Very happy to hear this. My name was literally made when I was a kid…..I have aged a bunch since then.

  • Great, because I am no longer a fan of Bugatti. *cringe intensifies*

  • PLEASE HELP!!!

I love the great amount of detail in this post but the only question I have that is unanswered is, DOES IT REVERTS BACK TO YOUR OLD ID AT THE END OF NOVEMBER IF YOU ARE A BETA TESTER FOR IT?!

I’m thinking the answer is No and we get to keep it, but it would be great to get a replies on this since it’s not mentioned in the post!

  • Yes I can change my name my brother made my name and don’t like my online id

  • Will older games be comparable later on because I have like no games less than a year old and I really need to change my name.

  • I am happy that I can finally modify my username soon. I chose it back in 2008, I was actually 27 years old then and have wanted recently to drop the ‘lazyboy20xx’ name. I do have a rant and I must say that if I was on xbox and played Destiny 2 or Elite Dangerous for months and months and months that I could change my username to something I like anytime and those games will still work fine. This is on everyone’s mind now.. Should we stop playing Destiny 2 and Elite Dangerous until we find out we can change our name without affecting those games, or can I comfortably keep playing them and everything will be fine. I want to throw in one last comment and say that you are giving first pick of names to those users thru a beta that probably don’t deserve it. Cancel the ‘beta’ and ‘roll out’ this delayed update very soon please!.

  • Will IT Be possible to change the name into a Name that was already Banned?

  • About time. Few years ago someone had hacked my account and the person actually sent me death threats about using it, saying it was their account now and if I didn’t leave them have it they’d come kill me and my family since it had my address in there from online purchases. Police got involved and everything. Called support to explain the situation and asked if I could change my ID or at the very least transfer my purchases to a new account and wipe any of my personal data and they said no. Years of time, gameplay, a ton of money (pre-order exclusive content, dlc purchases, etc.) all down the drain and had to start a new account from scratch and RE-PURCHASE hundreds of dollars. Not to mention cancelling all my bank cards, filing for identity theft, all the expenses of that, etc. Idk if a simple name change would have saved me from all that, but it probably would have at least given me more time to deal with the whole thing and find a way to stop them before I lost everything, as I said, YEARS of content. Still pretty sure Sony could have easily just verified my identity and transferred everything to my new account, but you know, where’s the extra money in that? -_-‘

  • Been waiting for this for a long loooooooooong time now, I’m so happy its finally coming out!

  • Yo sinceramente me quedo muy frustrado porque Sony solamente piensa en dinero, una vez gratis y luego hay que pagar??
No es suficiente con que tengamos que pagar plus para poder jugar online? Sinceramente dan vergüenza

  • BUT WHEN!!!!!!!!

  • Thank god for this my ID is probably the worst ID ever like what was I thinking AB112133 that not even a ID thanks Sony for adding this feature

  • I can’t wait to have my I’d match my twicth and YouTube names

  • I can’t wait to have my Id match my twicth and YouTube names

  • Why do we have to pay for a name change?(2nd one)
WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR SO LONG

  • Finally I have been waiting so long for this to be a feature!

  • Will this work with Rainbow six siege?

  • Yeah, I understand why some might change theirs, but I’m happy with mine. Besides most people I play with know me IRL lol.

  • I think this is an amazing idea. But a few things should happen first in my opinion

    1. In the beta don’t allow people to take a bunch of good names just because they get early access
    2. Do a constant reset on inactive accounts like Microsoft does. So users can get the name they won’t wothout a bunch of added stuff. Like every 6 months reset in active accounts
    3. Maybe allow spaces if possible. Instead of the leery “_,-‘s” or even keep those and allow spaces with that on top

  • Any chance that with this ID change I’ll be able to make or start a new Warframe? When I first started hey. I was new to PlayStation and I was playing it off the PlayStation Now. At the time, I was mediocre at best, leaving me very stuck in the game and wishing I could hit reset.

  • That’s a good thing needed a change of name anyways!
But I know that PlayStation Plus is how you guys make most of your money but I can’t get my money to go through my PlayStation or any store unless I pay in cash!

  • I think playstation should make a professional editing app that world make it amazing for editing videos

  • Any word if Overwatch will be compatible with the name change?

  • Great that you listen to the people about this feature, I know everyone wants this for a long time. There is one thing I don’t understand… if doing the change was so hard, and still wont be fully compatible with old games… wouldn’t it be easier to develop some kind of migration system, where you can transfer your purchases, trophies, friend list, online save… etc, to a whole new PSN account?
of course I don’t the back end work for all that, but it just sounds like easier to create a new account and have all your stuff transfer to that account and have the old account deleted.

In any case… great that this feature is now available! Great work Sony!

  • I really hope this works with Shower With Your Dad Simulator 2015.

  • Finally, I’ve been wanting to update my PS ID for a while too since I made it when I was’nt as mature and thought 69 a gun was cool. Plus I go by another name on all online games except PSN can’t depart my original account.

  • This is awesome. And I love the fact that if you change it more than 1 time you have to pay. Hopefully this will help keep trolling down. And people please stop asking if someone will get to use your original ID if you change yours. I mean common sense if you can change back at any time and have the option to display your old ID and new ID together then of course no one can use it. Anyways thank you Playstation and now I’m gonna start thinking of cool ID ideas for early 2019.

  • Sign me up please, I want to join the beta so I’ll be able to change my old name I have to my new one I’ve been thinking of. Cant wait till the full release comes out early next year.

  • Finally i can stop being made fun of

  • This is actually really awesome they are finally adding this. I’m glad though I fall in the category of being satisfied with my current psn name.

  • So, I take it that there will not be any transferring gta5 from old gen to new gen. I am getting my ps4 in December.

  • So is it included with the ps plus or I have to pay additionally?

  • Never thought I’d see that coming. I don’t even own a PlayStation anymore lmao.
