How Road Redemption Redefines Motorcycle Combat, Out Today on PS4

For those wondering, the answer is yes. Road Redemption was heavily inspired by the classic Road Rash series, particularly the Road Rash entries on the original Sega Genesis/Megadrive, Road Rash on 3DO (later ported to the original PlayStation), and Road Rash 64 on Nintendo 64. Motorstorm was also a big inspiration for us, as were Burnout 2 and 3.

With Road Redemption, our goal was to make a game that lives up to people’s memories of those classic Road Rash titles, which, of course meant that Road Redemption had to be much better than those early games in order to be successful. Thankfully, we’ve had 15 years of hardware progress to help us out and allow us to do things with physics and AI that simply weren’t possible in the heyday of the Road Rash series and I think we’ve achieved our goal.

Road Redemption’s gameplay, like its inspiration from Road Rash, is different from anything else on the market today. In addition to being a racing game, it’s also a full-fledged action game where the environment plays a huge role in a player’s moment-to-moment tactical decisions. Faced with a tough opponent on your left side, do you go at him hard and fast with your sword, putting yourself at risk for counters, or do you play defensively until the moment when you can kick him into oncoming traffic? The interaction with an ever-changing environment allows for combat possibilities that no other game offers.

Adding to the combat challenge, Road Redemption is an incredibly fast racing game, with average speeds of about 175mph. Early on we decided that we didn’t want to compromise on the combat complexity despite the speed of the action, even if it means the player has to engage in Dark Souls-level combat while simultaneously navigating hairpin turns and taking advantage of shortcuts.

In other words, while it’s easy to jump right in and have fun straight away in Road Redemption, becoming a master requires time, persistence, and practice using its many many weapons.

We wanted variety in Road Redemption to come from building on top of the game’s core mechanics as someone plays through the campaign. For instance, in the campaign’s opening races, players will mostly stick to simple (yet satisfying) weapon swings, kicks, and parries. However, late in the game a player might zap a heavily-armored racer to his right with a stun baton, fire off a few AK-47 rounds into the racer dropping pipe bombs in front of him, then take out the truck trying to edge him off the road via a sticky C4 bomb, before knocking the racer to his right off his cycle with a sledgehammer… all in the span of three seconds!

Making a game that was both immediately satisfying in its first 30 seconds and deep enough in its twentieth hour wasn’t an easy task, but we think it’s something we achieved and we hope players enjoy it!

    They rarely make demos any more. You just have to do the research and watch gameplay videos and the like

    DEMO’s have been replaced with “preorder to play the BETA”. It seems many game dev’s don’t stand by their game enough for people to try it for free (DEMO) as it could deter potential buyers if the game doesn’t meet their expectations. Also by labeling a game “BETA” dev’s can pass off the flaws as “it’s just a BETA, it will be fixed by release”. It really seems like a ugly trend that seems popular in the PC gaming realm, where the early access/beta/alpha games tend to be released that way or take a long time to get fixed (if they ever do).

    20 bucks it still someone’s hard earned money, it’s still lost income just on principle alone if you get it and find you hate it.That said some people are going to like it others wont, I wouldn’t say it’s universally a likeable title but at least youtube has plenty of people making videos so you can make a more informed opinion.

Not gonna lie, game wasn’t really on my radar. But you say “MotorStorm was a big influence” about ~literally any game~ and hey, I’m giving you a chance.

Hey there. I was one of the beta testers for the online multiplayer and have been playing this game well over a year and a half. I have a few thoughts to share about this game if you’d indulge me.

1. The roguelike progression system gives people a reason to keep playing. It’s fun to see that all the work you put in wasn’t just to lose.

2. The gunplay (shotties, pistols, smgs) is some of the best i’ve played. It’s very challenging hitting long range shots but not too easy even at short range. At short range, you’d do better to use a c4 or one of the many melee weapons.

3. The devs EQ Games have worked on this tirelessly and has really taken the community’s feedback when making changes to the game. This means it feels more like our game then their game.

4. Lastly, It’s $20 bucks. This game is easily work $40 for all of the content and this is coming from a person who won’t buy anything unless it’s on sale. Pick this game up NOW.

Also, before you think i was paid or anything to write this. Think again. I only just saw the game getting a port today to the ps4. Let’s hope that the sales from this version will merit a version for other consoles as well.

Honestly if this was a mobile game I would be impressed but for a PS4 game it looks almost too HOKEY if that makes sense I unno looks kinda sloppy guys sorry to say…I hope it proves me wrong…

How in the world is split screen local multiplayer not mentioned in this write up??? Went from “hmm” to “will buy” after watching the video…. But almost didn’t watch because failing on that front is the norm. Wow the campaign is even local coop. Buying immediately.

If 20$ is lost income then they have no business playing video games. They should prioritize more important things that the same 20$ could go to, instead of comparing a video game. no matter how horrible a game may be, those ” developers” worked their asses off for people that do appreciate there games and they don’t mind spending the 20$ and not complain about it.
