Free Days Gone DLC Drops Today, Beginning with Survival Mode Difficulty

Challenges like battling against an endless Freaker horde arrive later this month.

Days Gone has been out for just over a month now, and everyone at Bend Studio is thrilled by the fan response. We’ve been watching the community share beautiful and artistic shots from photo mode, and been incredibly entertained by all the emergent sandbox moments in the video streams. Coming in June there will be new game modes to share even more unique experiences, now with a ShareFactory Days Gone theme.

Survival Difficulty Mode

Survival difficulty mode kicks things off today. This builds on top of the current hard mode, with many tuning changes that create a much more challenging experience surviving the Central Oregon wilderness. Not only are the enemies harder, but you can’t bypass them using Fast Travel. This mode also features an immersive HUD that increases tension by removing enemy awareness indicators and outlines. The HUD is turned off, but players can temporarily display it by activating Survival Vision. In addition to bragging rights, players will earn new bike skins and trophies that can only be acquired by playing and beating Survival difficulty.

Weekly Challenges

Later in June, we will begin releasing Challenges. Each week a new combat, bike, or horde challenge drops with unique rules and scoring modifiers. Doing well at challenges awards wearable patches that come with perks. Patches provide small gameplay improvements like increased health, faster stamina recharging, decreased focus cost, greater melee weapon durability, better gun accuracy from the bike, and more. Patch benefits stack and even carry back into the main game. Players also earn rank and credits to buy character skins, bike skins, and wearable rings that provide more potent gameplay perks to help players perform better at all challenges.

Players can only equip two rings at a time, so they have to make tactical decisions for each challenge. Rolling reloads a portion of your ammo, vaulting regenerates some stamina, headshots increase gun accuracy, and more. Rings do not carry over to the main game. Replaying a challenge with new perks opens up increased scoring possibilities and opportunities to earn new rewards to build a better score to compete against your friends and the world via leaderboards.

As you may have caught above, character skins are available in the Challenges. Players will finally be able to change Deacon’s outfit by choosing between three looks: apocalypse Deacon, flashback Deacon, and — for the ultimate in fan service — shirtless Deacon. This is in addition to ten other characters including Boozer, Rikki, Addy, Iron Mike, and more!

Our first gameplay challenge, “Surrounded,” drops in late June. Players must survive an infinite horde onslaught in the town of Sherman’s Camp. They’ll be scored on how long they survive against not only the Freakers, but a clock that is constantly ticking down — killing Freakers adds more time so players can’t run and hide — they have to stay engaged in the fight to get the best score. They can also earn point multipliers by executing specific sub-challenges like environmental kills, headshots, and collecting ears while on the run.

Twelve challenges over 12 weeks makes this the summer of Days Gone and the summer of fun.

  • The game is great! Almost at the end I think. I did not know it was that long but it never feels boring. Hope to see a sequel!

    • A lot of critics were way off track with this title btw.

    • Ralstonizer

Were they? The gameplay and graphics are definitely top notch, and the bugs aren’t as bad as people say, but the writing is pretty awful, which is a pretty big deal when a game spends so much time focusing on the story.

    • The story was fine. It gets a lot better later on. It’s obvious most reviewers didn’t play more than 10 hours.

    • Ralstonizer

No, it really doesn’t. It’s nonstop predictable cliches and pointless dead end and/or just plain unfinished subplots.

I could list examples for an hour, but the one that sums it up best happens late in the game when Deacon tells a bad guy “if I had to pick between you or the freakers, I’d pick the freakers because at least they don’t kill unarmed women and children.” If you can’t see what’s wrong with that statement, I can’t help you.

Don’t get me wrong, again, the game is very fun to play, platinum-ed it months ago, but that writing is objectively bad.

    • KidGreengene

I think the problem is that they definitely played more than 10 hours. This game at a nice pace plays a lot better than forcing the 50 hours (pre-patched) into a week period. Days Gone is a good game, but it isn’t a good one to review because you have to mention all the issues.

    • Sure some of the writing wasn’t great but that doesn’t mean the entire story is bad. If you didn’t like it that’s fine but it’s only your opinion. A lot of people found it good. Especially people who didn’t rush through the game as fast as possible.

    • Black_Icefa02

@ralstonizer You know what they say about opinions and @**holes. Here’s mine…story wasn’t bad. It’s a video game, not a broadway production.

Oh and……“Objectively”….I don’t think that word means what you think it means.

    • crow13312013

Yes i agree with everyone who think game is great. I love it when you go kill the camp sights then discover freakers is killing them for ez for me if haven’t put more than 5-10hrs into the go back & play days gone take your time you’ll have more fun all those glitches wont feel half bad

    • @Ralstonizer… platinumed it months ago… it’s been out for 6 weeks man. Way to ruin any credit you thought you may have had.

The story is great, yeah there’s a few cliches but it’s a zombie game, of course there will be. The glitches are a killer. Audio timing breaks down, area rendering is a constant issue and FPS drops out all the time.

And why can’t we jump or swim!?!?!

    • Anarchyboy1

This game is awesome yes it has some predictable parts but hey thats our world now. People have explored alot of different venues an there doesnt seem to be much surprises left but either way game was good yes buggy an the story choppy at the beginning but it really caught me in it grasp. An for the guy who said he platinumd this thing months ago. Its basically been out like a month calm down.

    • Just finished the hoards had one more trophy to platnum and they decide to add 2 more trophies with a dlc which means I am either screwed out of my platnum or I have to play the whole game again to get it. Start the game day 1 and get it but if you have a life outside ps4 you’re screwed

  • I love this game!!! This is awesome! The only problem is this game is huge… huge!!! And I’m still like 3/4s into the game, not finished yet, and now I may not resist starting over in the Survival difficulty!!! I’ll never finish this game!!!

Lol jk and thank you Bend Studio I’m so happy for the success Days Gone is having, I’ve become a fan and I’m sure I’m not the only one! Peace out!!

  • Raging7Bull

Is there any chance we may see a multiplayer version of any sort in the future?

  • rdmeans6556

because critics suck like they dont even play the games anymore or simply self entitled youtubers with some cout so they automatically think they know it all sucks bein a gamer nowdays dont listen to reviews i never have glad for it.

  • Vigilante_Eagle

Do you have to finish the story first or this an independent mode from the story?

  • mairoelement

I loved the game! Every minute of it! Got my platinum and for the first time in any game, i felt that it came naturally , without grinding the game.
Thats how you make the trophy tree correct! Thank you Sony Bend Studios for this amazing game and free DLC. Definitely my favourite game this year!

  • So we can’t miss these challenges right? They’ll just stack up until we are ready to play them?

  • I was on the fence for Days Gone but this post just convinced me to buy it tomorrow when the E3 sale hits.

  • Will this come with a New Game + feature? Is there plans at all? Everything else for DLC looks great too!

  • Can’t wait to use the boozer skin while fighting ragers mabye a small multiplayer mode like resident evil 5 did

  • Please give a game plus mode, even if it is just in survival mode. Please go by players choice, I see it being requested by so many players. It would be so much fun.

  • BumpkinPumpkin

Can you start off on Survival difficulty or do you have to complete the game on one of the standard difficulties first?

  • Might give it a go eventually

  • dailydryerase

Thank you Bend:). Days Gone is terrific! Can’t wait to play all of this stuff you’re giving!

  • Black_Icefa02

So is there any story DLC in the works? Would love to see that.

  • Any chance we’ll get the option to turn off aim smoothing? Thanks

  • punkyhunk69

Great game! Don’t trust the reviews – I am about 15 – 20 hours into the game, i am yet scratch the surface!!
I request you to be patient for first 2 hours of the game.
As some reviewers claim, this is not repetitive either – Since its dynamic open world, the scenario changes every time.
Eg – I was going to take down a ambush camp, but accidentally ran into the horde and got chased by it. I rode my bike
through the camp to escape the horde to the top of the mountain. And then watched the horde take down ambush people
one by one from up there :) .

  • hatchet1984

We need the option to play as 1 arm or 2 arm boozer

  • malhakita69

I really loved this game, even with the small amount of glitches i encountered. And, am looking forward to starting survivor mode, as well as all the challenges coming out. Like many fans before me, i would really love a game plus mode, because i think it would really amp up the replay value to this game.

  • OwnedNoob247

All I want is more freakers in game, more weapons and the hordes to respawn. The amount of freakers roaming around in game isn’t enough. Ok thanks bye.

  • OwnedNoob247

Oh and also how do we know when the challenges are active? Because there is no multiplayer platform, how do we know when the challenges start and end?

  • So what’s the deal with the current survival mode? On the console it says that the event goes from June 6 to June 29. What is the event? Does this mean that survival mode goes away at the end of the month?

  • I saw that there was no reticule on the DLC trailer. Come on Bend Studio!!!
I need you to tell me if that is going to be an option for the future

  • For the weekly challenges its necessary a PS Plus subscription?

  • Caleb_Khan45

I started playing DG on day 1, i’ve played the entire game side missions and all on easy, again on normal, and i’m currently on my play thru’ on hard. And i absolutely love this game Bend. I want to do Survival next but please add a new game plus mode. With the guns and very limited amount of ammo in the beginning , the increased enemy difficulty coupled with the bad weapon handling, limited focus, and lack of skills to balance it out makes landing them headshots very difficult.I spend the biggest part of the game hiding in bushes throwing rocks trying like hell to lure them to me for a stealth kill. I love it but it really needs a New Game+ mode.

  • wRReCCBk60y

Do we have to play survival mode to Do the challenges

  • Wheres my Copy of english roads and franny vegas

  • Way to screw players out of their platnum by adding after the fact trophies. Even Ubisoft knows better and they’re the kings of pissing players off. There is nothing worse than having 1 trophy left and the developer decides to add dlc trophies to get your platnum especially when one requres an entire 2nd playthrough in a new mode.It a fun game but this is not how you please your player base.

    • Cancel that, I am a dumbass and didn’t notice the split list before I checked my trophies. I should mention in a year of disappointing games this has been a fun one.Multiplayer would be nice cause I can’t stand COD (blackout was fun for a bit) and Division 2 seems to have lost everybody

  • NuckFugget95

Just completed the survival mode story mode, and I managed to kill an entire horde in 60 seconds, and I managed to get the Hot Springs and Copeland’s people to join the fight against the militia.

  • wRReCCBk60y

So we have to play survival mode to Do the challenges once again asking i need help

    • NuckFugget95

I think they’re separate. Dont know when they’re gonna release the challenges.
