Players’ Choice: Control Voted August’s Best New Game

Erica and Man of Medan claim the runner-up spots.

Congratulations, Remedy! Director Jesse Faden’s journey into the unknown resonated with voters, earning Control the title of Best New Game for August 2019.

Flavourworks’ ambitious live-action thriller Erica took the runner-up spot, with the first entry in Supermassive’s Dark Pictures Anthology, Man of Medan, rounding out the top three.

What are your predictions for September’s poll? With games like Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, NBA 2K20, and Borderlands 3 launching before we’re even halfway through the month, it’s gonna be an interesting one.

Control! Man of Medan! Erica! Knights and Bikes! Madden! Oninaki! So many games!

That’s right, dear reader: it’s votin’ time. Support your favorite game of the past month — all it takes is a click in the poll below. We’ll close it off at 11:59pm Pacific on September 8, so get your picks in before then. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments and see if you can sway the undecided to your cause. I know what I’m voting for, but I’ll never tell…

September’s looking good, too! What do you think will make the cut for our next poll?

How does it work? At the end of every month, PlayStation.Blog will open a poll where you can vote for the best new game released that month. Soon thereafter, we’ll close the polls, tally your votes, and announce the winner at PlayStation.Blog. PlayStation Store will also showcase some top Players’ Choice winners throughout the year.

What is the voting criteria? That’s up to you! If you were only able to recommend one new release to a friend that month, which would it be? In keeping with our long tradition in the Game of the Year Awards, remastered or re-released games won’t qualify. Ambitious, larger-scale rebuilds and remakes like Shadow of the Colossus and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy will.

How are nominees decided? The PlayStation.Blog and PlayStation Store editorial teams will gather a list of that month’s most noteworthy releases and use it to seed the poll. Write-in votes will be accepted.

Well it looks like Control will win this easily. I wish games like Erica and Knights and Bikes would get more love.

Also it’s really sad that Madden 20 is in third place right now. There are a ton of games on that list that deserve to be higher than Madden.

    • Looks like Erica has a 6% lead atm so you jumped the gun my friend. Lol… Both Control and Erica are getting a lot of love though.

Erica is currently 2nd place at 30%. That’s nothing to sneeze at for an indie FMV game (a niche genre) pitted against more well known games & accomplished companies: Supermassive (known for Until Dawn) and Remedy (known for Alan Wake). Remedy’s new game, Control, also reviewed really well so that gives it a leg up. I had a blast playing it myself.

Anyway, runner up admidst such stiff competition is quite the feat for an up-and-coming indie developer. Flavourworks should he proud. Hopefully this gives them more attention in the future, and possibly convinces those on the fence to buy their game. Especially at $10 – that’s a steal.

  • I know it won’t be the popular vote because not that many people have PSVR, but my vote for August goes to The Angry Birds Movie 2 VR: Under Pressure

Really creative asymmetric local multiplayer game using VR headset for one player and TV screen for rest.

Definitely BLAIR WITCH is the best game of august for me, vote for BLAIR WITCH!

  • I don’t see a poll anywhere on this page. Where is it? I even turned off my ad blocker and reloaded the page, but still nothing.

Hey Sony, why aren’t you releasing any more PS2 emulations? It’s been over a year since the last one. We still need Tales of the Abyss, Tales of Legendia, and Dragon Quest VIII. Get with it!

    • The polls don’t work with Firefox, for some reason. Try Chrome.

Firefox’s Content Blocker does it – click the shield to the left of the address bar, and press ‘Turn off Blocking for this site’

    • Works fine for me in latest version of FireFox. Has for as long as these polls have existed. I haven’t had to change any of my settings.

    Control hands down

  • So many great games this month. I am genuinely excited for the return of FMV with Erica. Beautiful storytelling with cool choices to make. Great to play with my wife. Control is an unbelievably cool action game with some of the best visuals of this generation. But for me, Remnant takes it. I have never had more fun being frustrated. And that high when you take down a tough boss is unbeatable.

  • Control is just a beautiful, well made game. I never experienced a crash or major glitch, and I never wanted to put it down. Bonus points to whoever programmed the trophies cause that’s been one of the more enjoyable platinums to get.

  • Wish I could play control guess i will have to wait on a price drop.

  • Wow Erica caught up in votes fast!

I want to talk about a few PS5 rumours. Rumours that the PS5 dev kit is leaked, if that’s the design, it looks terrible and inefficient.
The vent pushes heat towards the middle creating heat for the processor and creates bottleneck.
Along the same veins, I would instead create a sort of polygon V shaped “Iron Man” Arck Reator looking at the middle of the console where the processor is, that would push hot air out of it in all direction kinda that would stick out like a cool looking muscle car vibe to it. Of course, it’s all covered but that’s where the main vent would be, along with vents on the sides creating horizontals Vs for 5 on both sides.
That’s how I would imagine the design.

I would also make sure the PS5 gpu can be removed and upgraded, that way, unlike buying a whole new console, you could sell a significant boost of a GPU at a lower cost while giving much higher performance.
Also add Ram slots to boost the performance even higher.

If next gen is all about graphics, then boosting your console would bring a lot of PC elitist to consoles given how fragmented the PC market store is.

  • Absolutely loved Control. And all the easter eggs made this Alan Wake fan very happy.

I guess I understand why Bard’s Tale IV isn’t getting any love here, given who now owns InXile Studios. Still, on PC last year, it was my personal game of the year, and deserved to at least have a row where it could be voted for.

I think aliens vs predator 2010 should be remastered
