An Update on Next-Gen: PlayStation 5 Launches Holiday 2020

Featuring a new controller with haptic technology and adaptive triggers.

Since we originally unveiled our next-generation console in April, we know that there’s been a lot of excitement and interest in hearing more about what the future of games will bring. Today I’m proud to share that our next-generation console will be called PlayStation 5, and we’ll be launching in time for Holiday 2020.

These updates may not be a huge surprise, but we wanted to confirm them for our PlayStation fans, as we start to reveal additional details about our vision for the next generation. WIRED magazine covered these updates and more in .

The “more” refers to something I’m quite excited about – a preview of the new controller that will ship with PlayStation 5. One of our goals with the next generation is to deepen the feeling of immersion when you play games, and we had the opportunity with our new controller to reimagine how the sense of touch can add to that immersion.

To that end, there are two key innovations with the PlayStation 5’s new controller. First, we’re adopting haptic feedback to replace the “rumble” technology found in controllers since the 5th generation of consoles. With haptics, you truly feel a broader range of feedback, so crashing into a wall in a race car feels much different than making a tackle on the football field. You can even get a sense for a variety of textures when running through fields of grass or plodding through mud.

The second innovation is something we call adaptive triggers, which have been incorporated into the trigger buttons (L2/R2). Developers can program the resistance of the triggers so that you feel the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain. In combination with the haptics, this can produce a powerful experience that better simulates various actions. Game creators have started to receive early versions of the new controller, and we can’t wait to see where their imagination goes with these new features at their disposal.

While there’s much more to share about PlayStation 5 in the year ahead, we have plenty of blockbuster experiences coming your way on PS4, including Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part II, and Ghost of Tsushima. I’d like to thank all PlayStation fans for continuing the journey with us, as we embark on the future of games.

  • Wooooot! This is epic news indeed. I’ll be in line at midnight ready to pick up my preorder of the beastly PlayStation V.

  • To Sony: 2 suggestions from a longtime Playstation fan.

    For the PS5 Console
Please consider testing the noise level while still in the development stage.
It’s generally unacceptable to buy a 400-500$ console and have to give up playing some games (RDR 2 is the best example) because the thing makes so much noise that my vacuum cleaner graciously admits defeat. Even my 80GB “Phat” PS3 produces less noise, and it’s 10 years old!
See all the PS4 Pro CUH71xx noise complaints, they are proof enough.
Solving it “silently” with the CUH72xx revision is not useful for the ppl already owning the first revision, if you don’t provide the possibility to upgrade freely to the new one. I don’t think having to pay a 150-200$ difference, between selling the old one and buying the new version, is a good option. Do you?
Please take better care of your clients! You have nothing to lose and a LOT to gain from it in the long run.

About the new controllers: i like the new improvements they’re quite welcomed. BUT…
Please consider removing the “generally considered useless” stuff like the lightbar and the touchpad.
And please don’t forget about all the complaints ppl had regarding DS4’s battery life.
You definitely need to make improvements in this department.
    Right now a DS4 lasts about 6-8h of continuous use… which is what… about 50-60% less than a DS3?
If you keep this up for the DS5, and add haptic feedback, it’ll not last 3h, and render them useless :)

  • I can´t wait! A long year is about to begin…

  • I hope that the backwards compatibility extends to hardware. I don’t want to have to buy a new steering wheel for the PS5!!!

  • Its toooo far for me

  • So L2/R2 in PS5 will have now 4 levels of press where Ps4 and Ps3 had 2 to 3. Cool

  • I was expecting this but I am still waiting on other news like price, what about also giving discounts on digital games instead of buying physical. Another thing would be can we solve this issue of games taking up too much space its been over 2 years where I have no space on my 2 TB PS4 I constantly have to delete older games to play newer ones. Also another thing can we solve this issue of the rubber on the Joysticks of the controller every controller I get they disintegrate and I am forced to either buy a new controller r play with one that has no rubber not that comfortable. How many exclusives will release also ? I hope this time we will see an October release of PS5 in my eyes this would be better than a November slot.

    • Yes, the space issue is a real problem. With a 1TB PS4 Pro I should not be in a position where I can only keep three or four games on it at a time, and have to delete games I still enjoy “dipping my toes into” on occasion simply because I bought a new game and want to play it.

I wouldn’t even complain too much if they produced some kind of additional memory drive I could attach or something–not like a memory stick, but like an additional memory that’s part of the system, where games could be sent to it to free up space for a new game but easily recalled, no need to re-install, when/if I want. Kind of like the iCloud Drive, but not a cloud.

Of course now that I’m typing that out it sounds stupid. Just give us more memory to begin with! :-)

  • So its mean we all goona get a Synesthesia without acid.love it

  • I hope it’s backward compability

  • One thing I read in the Wired article that intrigued me was how programmers would duplicate common resources dozens if not hundreds of times in the game code so non-ssd hard drives wouldn’t have to spin too far to read certain data.

This could mean game install size could shrink quite a bit, at least eventually, for PS5 exclusives. Probably won’t be the case for any ps4/ps5 cross-releases, remasters, and anything also developed for a pc in which standard drives will still have in common use.

Gosh I’m looking forward to the ps5 even if I’m not a launch-time buyer.

  • Shut up and take my chicken drumstick!

  • How much will it cost bc I don’t have a lot of money

  • I wanna see pictures or it didn’t happen!

  • Sony Playstation 5 must have ANTI-CHEATER System in Multiplayer Games like Uncharted 4 (Best MP ever). MP Cheaters destroy the fun.

  • Greetings From Canada PlayStation Fans & Community. I’m New To PlayStation. I Can’t Wait Intel PlayStation 5 (PS5) Comes Out! Must Very Exciting For The Next Gen Console To Be Shown. :) I’m Also Really Excited To Meet This Community!!! :D

    ~ Sincerely Ceremolligence

  • PS5 on the way…. Let’s do it! Will definitely put my pre order in ASAP! Thanks Sony! Keep the fun rolling!!!!!!

  • Yoooo I hope there will be god of war 5 for the PS5 because the story is amazing and Such a good game also can’t wait for The Last of us Part ll

  • Yay I get to spend $500 on a ps5 so I can buy all of my games back off of my PS4 sounds fun…oh and the 1000’s of hard hours to all my progress……can’t wait to spend $1000 dollars worth of games I already have on last gen….Sony you better hope there’s a way to move all my games and progress or you will lost a customer

    • PS4 games will play on it, you won’t lose any games?

      Or am I misunderstanding something?

    • I feel you, just another way for Sony to make more money on the backs of there loyal customers, what about all the games I have on my plug in hard drive, I really do feel you bro

  • Ghost of Tsushima WHEN?!?!?!?!?!

    Also, PS5? Sold!
    Backward compatible with PS4/Pro? SOLD!!!

I am going to pre-order this baby, I cannot WAIT!

  • Is COD BOII coming out on ps5????

  • Last gen, I waited until the release of Batman: Arkham Knight, before I made the switch from PS3 to PS4. Aka: a game that would not be released on the prior generation consoles, meaning I had no choice but to upgrade if I wanted to play the game. I’m guessing that will be the same here. I’ll hold onto the PS4 as long as possible until something like GTA VI comes out that is a PS5 gen-exclusive, which will force me to take the plunge.

  • Yay more fortnite lol

  • So how much is this new ps5 going to be ? Way to much, new Ps4 games are 60 bucks and higher, how much do you think ps5 games are going to be 80 to 100 bucks, come on really ? I’ve played ps ever since the first one came, I am a true gamer, so will ps5 play Ps4 games , will online gaming be interconnected between ps5 and ps4, my personal opinion is that Sony has come up this a new way to make money on the backs of there very loyal customers, I like that a new ps5 is coming out, change is good, but at what COST to the customer

    • Well I think game prices will rise but not to 100 bucks I think that the maximum will be 80 bucks(And that’s to much for a game)+ I hope loot boxes and microtransactions will die Next Gen If we are paying 80 bucks for a full priced game

  • Very cool. What I’m excited about is that we are finally getting (at least my understanding is) true support for prior system. So, I’ve built up a huge library of excellent PS4 games and it’ll be really awesome to connect up the more powerful system and have that library available at any time to play. It’s ashame that my PS3 games (although all on disc) can’t be played without hooking up the PS3, but that’s understandable given the unique architecture.

  • Finally,we’ve been waiting for song long,at last the PlayStation 5 is coming. As we all know that there’s gonna be few editions after the PlayStation 5 Standard Edition, just like the PlayStation 4, then the Slim then the Pro.Am so glad to hear those news. All thanks to Sony Interactive Entertainment, thank you guys.

  • And I just want to see,Grand Theft Auto VI,and the continuetion of the Street Fighter If there’s going to be one.

  • really? wow and what mouth in 2020 will come out?

  • Personally I hope the controllers are durable I don’t rage it’s just the constant smashing buttons to run or to do certain things. I’ve bought 6 ps4 controllers all broken different causes. Not looking for a handout but serious gamers need serious controllers, idk about all the different vibrations it has; is this thing suppose to be in our pants or in our hands gaming… This thing should have Bluetooth connectivity so we don’t have to buy PlayStations **** headphones. But I already know what the turnouts going to be… I won’t be buying the first one how many will be out ps5 ps5.5 pspro5 I will sit back and watch!

  • My name is frank and I base in USA…“My life is

back!!! After 14 years of Broken marriage, my wife left

me and our two twins. I felt like my life was about to

end i almost committed suicide, i was emotionally down

for a very long time. Thanks to a spell caster called

Dr OMODE which i met online. On one faithful day, as I

was browsing through the internet, I was searching for

a good spell caster that can solve my problems. I came

across allot of testimonies about this particular spell

caster. Some people testified that he brought their Ex

lover back, some testified that he restores womb, cure

cancer, and other sickness, some testified that he can

cast a spell to stop divorce and so on. i also come

across one particular testimony, it was about a woman

called Sonia, she testified about how Dr OMODE brought

back her Ex lover in less than 7 days and reverse the

effect of their little boys cancer, and at the end of

her testimony she dropped Dr OMODE ‘s e-mail address.

After reading all these, I decided to give Dr OMODE a

try. I contacted him via email and explained my problem

to him. In just 3 days, my wife came back to me. We

solved our issues, and we are even happier than before.

Dr OMODE is really a gifted man and i will not stop

publishing him because he is a wonderful man… If you

have a problem and you are looking for a real and

genuine spell caster to solve all your problems for

you. Try Dr OMODE anytime, he might be the answer to

    your problems. Here’s his contact

    {omodeherbahome@gmail.com} oR by phone :+2347015927966

    Thank you Dr OMODE.

  • Day one for me the backwards compatibility , controller updates, SSD, VR built in etc…..

As soon as the pre-order comes up i will instantly be there.

*** Can we start a petition for Shawn Leyden to do the PS5 reveal when it happens just simply Nostalgia :0 ***
How would we go about doing this???

  • Great news for sure ( I have PS5 already Pre-Ordered) just like my ProjectScarlett , I love the UI revamp and what’s being done to it with it and I do hope that trophy progression gets integrated in PS5 as well as other cool features that weren’t there .

  • Now, if only Sony would make a Dualshock version of the Elite Pro or Scuff Vantage controllers, that’d be great. I would be willing to pay the extra $$ as it has helped improve my game play a lot in FPS, and a lot less stress on the thumb for having to move back and forth constantly. If not, guess I have to wait for another Scuff to come out when the PS5 is released because I hate the standard controllers now.

  • What is the frame rate for the ps5

  • I am positively excited for PlayStation 5, in my currency it will be twice the amount of the US dollar but I am ready for it!

I just hope that is truly is backward compatible because PlayStation 4 was an investment with spending $120 for each Standard version of the game, i just dropped $240 on the Ultimate Edition of Ghost Recon: Breakpoint. So yeah, Backward compatibility is all I need!

And the controls are blowing my mind, the technology they are putting into them to allow you to feel the difference in resistance in whatever you are doing. Talk about Amazing!

I await you O’ Great One!

  • Sounds great! I have been gaming from the start of the video game revolution and it has come so far and amazes me every year. I started on Pong back on Christmas Day of 1976 and have never not had a controller in my hands at some point since. I am proud to be called a PS fanboy even if I am in my 50’s, keep up the great work Sony!

  • Im ready for the Ps5 I hope it bc for ps1 though 4 digital games and physical games

  • I hope this system exceeds some of my expectations unlike the last system:
    1. Having the Sly Cooper games available to play on it
    2. Having a new classic series that is just as nostalgic or maybe even better.

  • Analog stick needs reinforcing. Controllers are expensive when you’re buying a new one every month or so…Left side gets weak, then the other. Preventing me from running(rushing) or pivoting side to side, dodging my opponents. That is all. Thank you.

  • can i play ps vita / ps tv on ps5 ?

  • does fortnite free on ps5????

  • Indeed some great new features for the DS5! I like to see some news on external HDD use in PS5. I would really miss my 8Tb external HDD on my PS4 Pro if its not a option. I hope to buy a second one for PS5.

  • Can’t believe I missed this…damn no time anymore for gaming news. What a disgraced bs…Sony what have you become?…nothing but a bunch of greedy bastards.Utterly disappointed…PS5 really?…this soon?…look at what PS4 does what’s the point of a damn PS5?…and y’all dare say that what matters is games…this industry is rotten to the core,no salvation anymore.I curse ma love for games but will do ma best to abandon gaming next year.

PS:I hope ms wins next-gen…maybe that will bring you Sony back to be a good company which is how you were back on PS3 gen.

    Out.
