Introducing Our MLB The Show ’20 Cover Athlete: Javier “El Mago” Báez

MLB The Show ’20 launches on March 17, 2020.

We’re thrilled to reveal Javier “El Mago” Báez as the cover athlete for MLB The Show 20!

Known as “El Mago” which translates to “the magician,” Báez has dazzled the baseball world for years with his enchanting skills that have rightfully earned his nickname. Whether Báez is stealing a base by masterfully evading a tag, making impossible catches look easy or pulling off his signature no look tag; his skills are unparalleled and he always does it with flair and swagger. Báez also produces at the plate, too; in 2018 he hit 34 home runs, 111 RBI’s and a .290 batting average.

“I am so honored and excited to be on the cover of MLB The Show 20. I’ll never forget how it felt when I saw myself in the game for the first time (even as a backup!). It was so surreal. Still, it’s one thing to see your virtual self, but it’s completely next level to be on the cover of a game you’ve played and love. Let’s go!” Báez said.

It’s not just baseball fans that Báez has won over. Even The Show’s 2019 cover athlete, Bryce Harper is a fan. “Javy Báez is a player I love watching because of his talent and flair for the game. Congrats to him on being named the new cover athlete.”

  • Don’t care for the Cubs, but can’t argue with the choice. All those stubs and packs and login rewards though … woof. Can I give you $120 for a game that doesn’t have any of that in it?

    • iamtylerdurden1

The Show 19 was phenomenal. The Show is always good though. I want the Anniversary edition. That cap!

Best sports game in the business.

    • Jisatsu_Kiddo

yes because that loaded pistol they put against your head forces you to buy it. ….oh wait.

    • It’s bloat that makes the game worse whether you engage with it or not. Not hard to understand but sorry if you can’t, Jisatsu_Anime.

    • Jisatsu_Kiddo

Sorry they put a gun against your head and brainwashed you BillyInbred. See I can act like a preschooler also.

  • I’ll be waiting to hear about VR support before I pre-order. I skipped 19 due to a lack of VR support (until it was bundled with my PS+ subscription), and I will do the same with 20 if the lack of PSVR support continues.

I have been a yearly player/supporter of Sony’s MLB games since the 989 days, but until steps are taken to move to the next generation of digital baseball, I will not be putting my money behind this product again.

All I am asking for is a minimum of a HR Derby mode in VR, do that and I am in. We have move support on PS3, lets at least match that on PS4/PSVR.

    Thank You

Play the game if you love the game ( baseball) who cares ab VR if you love the game of baseball bad enough than you would play the game for what it is. Period.

  • What’s going to be “new” about it is all I want to know especially with this being the last The Show on PS4 I assume…I think “better graphics” will not be enough for most of us.

    • This will not be the last version of The Show on the PS4.

    • supremedaddy_3

@chip1010 yes it will the ps5 comes out near next Christmas so therefore ps5 games will start coming out and let’s be honest… MLB THE SHOW on the PS5 Specs would be INSANE!!!

  • Baez is an amazing player but why not give it to the WS MVP or a league MVP overall? Never understood that but this is an improvement over Bryce.

Surprised y’all didn’t have him shirtless with his arms over a bat, with his back turned with his tattoo and all.

I disagree with you I’m a cubs fan and we got screwed out being on the cover of mlb back in 2016 after we won world series so its about dam time they make it up to us letting us be on cover I haven’t bought an mlb game since mlb 17 and wasn’t playing on buying this year either until this happen well played Sony you night get me for 2 copies standard edition physical just for the case and either the digital deluxe or physical collectors for the hat and avatars and stubs

  • Time to fires up 19 for the first time. I guess maybe.

  • I hope 2 legends that make it into this game will be Hank Aaron and Randy Johnson. I could name a lot more but those are the 2 I wanna see in the most. Make it happen SDS!

    • I agree with you. No idea why they haven’t gotten either guy in yet, but hopefully they are able to for 20.

  • Let everybody that pre-orders the game play it early like before, not just the more expensive editions.

  • How long will preorder promo for Baez 19 finest last for?

  • Booger_T_Waco

Preordered. Where do I find my instant Báez finest bonus for the show ‘19 ?

  • Pete Alonso. 53 homeruns new major league record. Aaron Judge got the cover when he set the record at 52. So how come the polar bear doesn’t get the cover?

    • Well, the Yankees have a lot more marketing appeal than the Mets, as do the Cubs. That said, it’s surprising that anyone buys a sports video game because of the cover athlete but someone in this post says they might buy more than one because it’s a Cub. That sounds crazy to me. Anyway, I’ve no idea how the choice even works though I’d assume the player’s agent and maybe MLB are involved in who is chosen for the cover. I doubt Sony can just say it wants a specific player and then gets them. I’m most curious as to why a pitcher has never appeared on the North American release cover.

Should of considered Christian Yelich. If not for a knee injury might have been a back to back MVP

  • MLB 20 now needs to have the ability to seamlessly update rosters AFTER you start a season so that all players are available. I have been playing Franchise/Season mode for years and thought by now that they would had this ability built in. Currently the only way to get update rosters is to get them from “Live Roster Updates” or download rosters from the vault. However after you do that you have to start a new season. This feature is a critical function that needs to be added ASAP ..

  • hi there

i pre-ordered the digital version but i have not received Baez in the show 19 , can you help ???

  • I can’t believe you are including a player on the front cover from a team that did not even make it to the post season .. Dumb idea. How about the MVP of the World Series Strasberg.
!! Now that would be most fitting considering you are not releasing until March 2020. The other thing that really bugs me is you are not allowing for the integration of new rosters into franchise mode. With all the great programming you have done in the MLB series this is a serious flaw as players change and are omitted early in the season .. GET with it MLB and make these very important changes to MLB 20.
