Skater XL is a New Take on Skateboarding Games, Coming to PS4

Skater XL grants unparalleled access to skateboarding and its culture.

What’s up, PlayStation fans! My name’s Dain and I’m one of the creators of Skater XL, a new skateboarding game that we’re excited to announce will be coming soon to PS4.

It’s been ten years since a new, authentic skateboarding game hit the market, and a lot has changed in that time. Skateboarding franchises were some of the most played and beloved video games of the 2000’s — many of us have fond memories of Friday nights chilling on the couch with a few buds passing the controller around playing EA’s Skate or the original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series.

Fans of the genre have famously been clamoring for a new Skate and a revival of an old franchise, but the question we’ve been asking ourselves at Easy Day Studios is — what would a skateboarding game designed from the ground up today look like? We’ve spent the last few years looking to answer that question, designing and improving Skater XL through Early Access, and now moving towards the full launch of the complete 1.0 game.

The most important thing to understand about Skater XL is that it’s designed to be fun in the same way that skateboarding is fun. The core of the gameplay is designed more as an expressive and creative tool than a traditional video game with pre-set challenges to complete.

The game is unique in that it doesn’t have any tricks programmed into it, only control of the movement through the thumbsticks. Each thumbstick is connected to the character’s corresponding foot — the right stick controls the right foot, the left stick controls the left foot.

This control scheme is consistent through all parts of the gameplay, making it easy to learn and rely on when inventing new tricks and movements. See below where the same movements have been made on the sticks in different modes of the gameplay. The front foot is pushed left and the back foot is pushed right, creating the same movement of the board in each situation.

There are a range of basic movements, with a ton of freedom in how they are performed. Skater XL uses physics controlled by the thumbsticks to drive all movement in the game, which is a big step away from traditional ‘canned animation’ based systems. Precise movements made through the thumbsticks will make your tricks look and feel different each time, adding a level of expression, personalization, and style to the gameplay.

Below is an example of flipping the board while jumping to create tricks like kickflips and heelflips. How you flick the front foot creates different movement during the trick.

This same level of control is available in all types of tricks including jumps, flips, grinds, powerslides and manuals.

As your level of skill and creativity grows, you can combine and chain these tricks together in any way you like. For example, see here three different trick lines possible using just three basic tricks – kickflip, powerslide and crooked grind.

There are so many ways to combine and style the same few tricks, and there are a lot of tricks possible in Skater XL!

The resulting gameplay is very much free-form, sandbox and creative in nature. Think of it more like a musical instrument than a conventional game.

The final piece of the puzzle is the environment. You can take this set of basic skills and tricks and re-invent the environment any way you like. Whether you push yourself, perfecting the subtle nuances of a highly technical trick, or just want to catch some air, our environments are yours to leave your mark on.

This creativity in reinventing real-world environments is a big part of skateboarding and the final release of Skater XL will contain several real-world locations based on iconic skate spots from California and the West Coast.

At its core, Skater XL is about the journey of challenging yourself and expanding what you can do each time you play — whether it be trying to perfect a line with a tough sequence of moves or a just chill and free-skate, doing what you feel like in the moment.

The freedom and depth in the controls is something we think that every skate game fan has been wanting since the birth of the genre. When we saw a Skater XL modding community spring up with more than 50,000 players and thousands of “very positive” reviews on Steam with some playing for more than a thousand hours, we felt humbled, but also that we were onto something.

We’re constantly finding amazing new things that the community has created, including an onlinezines, video parts, fake skate brands and hundreds of mods. It’s crazy and awesome.

Our work on the core game is just one part of a bigger ecosystem and our goal is for Skater XL to be the home for digital skateboarding. We can’t wait to discover where the players, modders and content creators will go next, and are really excited to bring Skater XL to PS4 and PS4 Pro.     • Or realize a world in which Skate isn’t happening?

      Honestly, the first comment coming in to say make something else is a disservice to everything Easy Day Studios is doing. It’s also a fundamentally different approach to skateboarding than previous games. Why can’t we simply celebrate its presence?

    • It’s dead bruh. Let it go. Modern day EA don’t care no more.

    • It’ll never happen. The studio that made the skate games is long gone.

  • I’ve been waiting for a new skate game for years!. I hope this one does it right.

  • This seems like a pretty refreshing take on the Skateboarding genre. THPS was the game that I bought with my first PlayStation. As someone that’s always been a fan of these types of games, I can’t wait to give it a try.

  • I pray this turns out to be great. Will there be some sort of creation suite in the game? Like create a skater, create a park, etc?

    • Yeh I’m kinda concerned. It kinda reminds of a newer Tony Hawk game. I kinda hope it does well.

    • There probably will be, idk about create a park since it’s a very realistic skate simulator. But it’s nothing like a Tony Hawk game. Look it up on YouTube, it’s already on steam

  • If this has multiplayer and the multiplayer works well, I’ll get it. Skate was fun because you could skate with friends and try to one-up their tricks. Without multiplayer, Skater XL probably won’t be worth it.

    • Well, it’s currently out on steam and it has a multiplayer mod that works pretty good.
      I’m hoping easy-day brings it into the actual game.

    • This actually looks pretty good and it sounds great.

    • I did think about getting the Steam version for the multiplayer, but if it’s coming to PS4, I may wait and see if they have something official planned.

    • These are the real questions. Add a skater/park editor, this would be the new gold standard in skating games after recent others have disappointed.

  • The has definitely been a game with the same control mechanics as this one. It isnt new I’m sure if it. However I do remember it being fun so hope this one works out too

    • You’re talking about session.
      It’s kinda the same, but also kinda different.

      A good example of the ways it’s different is that SXL has the right stick be the right foot, and the left stick be the left foot, so a switch ollie and a nollie is the same stick movement.

      While Session has it so that the left stick will control the front foot regardless of if you’re regular or switch, though you can change the control scheme in Session.

  • Not gonna lie, this was probably the last thing I expected to see when I opened the PS Blog today.
    BUT, it’s also arguably the most exciting thing I could’ve hoped to see.

    I liked the THPS games back in the day and LOVED the Skate series, so I’m always down to check out another skateboarding game. The control scheme sounds super interesting, and it does sound like y’all are keen on capturing the skill + creative element that makes skateboarding so satisfying (imo).

    Sign me the hell up.

  • I was wondering if Skater XL would ever make it to console. I actually enjoy a goalless Skate game where you can create your own lines. I just hope they have a texture importer for console. I have my Emerica shoes, Grid deck and Giger wheels on PC. (please Devs and Sony).

  • Honestly forget any idea of previous skate games 5 of 10 years ago, this is the game you want.

    The satisfaction I get playing this game on Steam is remarkable. Now I can enjoy this beauty on PS4. Best gaming news I could have hoped to see!

  • I’m glad to see more skateboarding games on PS4 but I much prefer the Tony Hawk arcade style than the Skate simulation style.

    this is awesome, i am going to get this game & i also hope this game studio doesn’t **** this up. because the last skateboarding didn’t do to well… you know… that 2015 skateboarding game that was made by a well known game studio. but this is awesome news so i am going to get this game 100%! can’t wait!

  • If there’s a demo, I’ll give it a shot. But the more it plays like Skate, the less likely I am to enjoy it.
    I’ll just be the old curmudgeon playing Tony Hawk 1-9 until the day I die.

    • It’s nothing like any Tony Hawk game, and not even really similar to the Skate series since this is basically a realistic Skate simulator

    My teenage self is so happy right now! I still have my PS3 plugged in just in case I want to play skate. Now if only they could bring back Tony Hawk 2 and Transworld Surf

  • Meh, I already know it isn’t be as good as Skate. Most people getting hyped expecting this to be as good will be disappointed.

    • Better then Skate actually(pc version at least). If you want arcade floaty 20 foot ollies tons are around.

    I’ll probably get it regardless from an old skater perspective, but I’m a bit concerned about trophy integration if there’s little traditional game structure and tricks are organic.
    A fun platinum really oils that wallet.

    • I feel that on a personal level. My apartment was broken into a few years ago. The tv, ps, xbox, phone, and tv was all stolen. It makes you wonder why so many people are such scum.

  • Honestly, I was expecting some story mode, where you have to build a career as a proffesional skater, with challenges, side missions, go around the city looking for places to skate, run from the police and compete online with other players. This is kinda good, but the animation is really low quality compared to toher modern games. It really needs development. It’s the same as Session. We need a full skate game, not just some small spots poorly animated to move aroud with a skateboard.

    Been playing the SXL Steam alpha/beta for some time now, almost 200 hours logged. I must say, after playing and loving all the EA Skate games back in the day, SXL is very reminiscent; and I might even like it more. The control scheme is amazing, makes complete sense on how the tricks works, especially if you know how to skate.

  • How do I try it,the game looks a lot like skate 3… I miss doing sum dark slides and 5-0 grinds. Can’t wait to play
