While story, characters and visuals are all key components of what makes a videogame memorable, it’s their core mechanics and gameplay systems that make them fun – and 2017’s release roster offered fun in abundance.
You and I aren’t the only ones looking forward to settling in over the next several days and sinking some serious time into just some of the spectacular games that have released over the past 12 months. So to are the developers behind those hits. Which brings us to this list. We asked a selection of creators who have released games over 2017 to reveal what games have hooked them during downtime between work commitments this year.
And also, fair warning: spoilers ahead.
The arrival of Assassin’s Creed Origins on October 27 will mark a significant milestone for the series. Not only will the game explore an intriguing new era of history and tell the story of how the Assassin Brotherhood was formed, it will also release almost 10 years to the day after the first Assassin’s Creed launched. In the decade since the series’ inception, Assassin’s Creed games have sold hundreds of millions of copies and changed people’s lives, not least of whom are the developers who worked to bring each game to life. One of the developers that has been with the series since the first game is Jean Guesdon, the Creative Director of Assassin’s Creed Origins. We talked to Guesdon about what it was like to work on that first title, how the series has grown over time, and why now is the right time to take players to Ancient Egypt.
There’s a routine that Irish comedian and Go 8 Bit presenter Dara O’Briain performed a few years ago that’s always stuck with me. It touches on the idea that the average person’s worldview becomes rapidly simplistic the further afield any country in question is from them; a rich culture of peoples and lands boiled down to two or three basic concepts.
As technology progresses and access to the globe and its multi-region, multi-cultural histories are a mere touch screen away, it’s a routine the grain of truth in which gets more shameful as the years past. We should know – I should know – more about our neighbours. And I’m not talking about the ones you can wave at from your backyard.
