Following this week’s announcements regarding Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots on the PLAYSTATION 3, a lot of questions popped up in the comments area of the PlayStation.Blog. We put together this FAQ to address your concerns:

Q: When is the game shipping to retail?
A: The game is scheduled to arrive at retail stores in North America on June 12, 2008.

Q: What’s in the Metal Gear Online Starter Pack?
A: The Metal Gear Online Starter Pack, included with Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, is a squad-based, online multiplayer tactical shooter that supports up to 16 players and takes place in the Metal Gear Solid universe.

Q: When is the Metal Gear Online multiplayer beta test?
A: The Metal Gear Online multiplayer beta test is scheduled to begin on April 21, 2008.

Q: How long will the Metal Gear Online beta test run?
A: The Metal Gear Online multiplayer beta test will run for approximately 2 weeks

Q: Where can I get the pre-sell?
A: The pre-sell program will be available nationwide at all major retailers.

Q: Is there a time frame for the pre-order to gain access to the beta? When does the pre-order period begin?
A: The pre-order will begin April 2008. Check with your local retailer on availability.

Q: Is there any special process that consumers must go through to verify their participation in the beta?
A: When the pre-order program begins in April 2008, consumers who pre-order Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots will receive the Metal Gear Saga 2.0 DVD, containing a Prologue that recaps the Metal Gear franchise, a 20th Anniversary retrospective, character bios for Big Boss, Liquid Snake, Solidus Snake, and Solid Snake, plus a collection of international trailers of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. This pre-order package also contains an insert with a download code and special instructions for accessing the Metal Gear Online beta test when it goes live in late April.

Q: How many people will be allowed to participate in the Metal Gear Online beta test?
A: The special Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots pre-order package (which includes the insert with the Metal Gear Online download code) will only be available while supplies last.

Q: How do consumers who have already pre-ordered participate in the beta?
A: Consumers will need to contact their local retailer for more information.

Q: Will consumers who don’t pre-order have any chance to join the beta?
A: If additional promotional partners are secured, there is a possibility of making beta access available, but nothing is confirmed at this time.

Big Question! Will MGS4 be on a 25 gig blu-ray disc or a 50 gig blu-ray disc???? Please someone answer!Very curious!

+ Hammer on February 29th, 2008 at 3:15 pm said:

you know i went and spent like 900 dollars on this thing and you guys cant come out with a decent game to play every game you have is the same as the xbox oh wait resistance and heavenly sword sorry and dirt you cant even hook your car up in dirt whats the point

+ Hammer on February 29th, 2008 at 3:19 pm said:

the psp also haas no games that are any good for it when is that going to start popping off

+ wallhugger on February 29th, 2008 at 4:17 pm said:

at 103 let me say the last new exclusives for ps3 are.

MGS4 (you knew that already)
Resistance 2 (you SHOULD know this already)
Damnation (trust me you REALLY should’ve know this already)
Race Drive: Grid (from the DTM racers creators)
This is Vegas (could be interesting but is still looks like it needs a lot of development)
Red Faction: Guerilla

oh and btw the reason why Home is taking so long is because they are redoing big pieces of the world. (I saw the new screens in OPM #67 Benelux.)

so when is this bundle gonna hit the Belgian stores? and if so will it bring us back BC?

Thanks for the info;)

You forgot the most important question. Why can’t we get the MGS PS3 here in Europe. I am sure a lot of people here would love to buy a 80GB, PS2 compatible MGS branded box here in Europe.”

No that is not the most important question. They already gave out the most important answer for the release date in North America, or better yet, the U.S. sucka! haha…

Hope they give out the online beta in Canada. thanks for posting the FAQ though, it answered some of my other questions.

I’ll miss this beta cause im not in the US :(

+ thataide on March 1st, 2008 at 5:46 am said:

When you buy a game like Resistance or Gears of War, it comes with a single player campagn and a full online mode in the disc. MGS4 creators want us to buy a single player game with a little piece of online, and then go buy the rest of the online mode on the PS Store? That’s a steal…

Question. When April rolls around, how do we know what to pre-order? Do I just pre-order the game on April 1st, or will there be a separate special pre-order for the beta? And when exactly in April will this be available?

+ TheN1Armyguy on March 1st, 2008 at 10:49 am said:

This is GREAT news! I can’t wait until this game comes out. I’m definitely pre-ordering it in April.

Just keep MGS4 on PlayStation 3 and I won’t complain.

Keep up the good work guys! :)

You forget haze that comes in may, Little Big Planet, killzone 2 (if really comes out), singstar (for the casual gamers) and in 2009 god of war 3 and tekken for now and if tekken doesn’t arrive this year

+ Conch_Bubby on March 1st, 2008 at 11:13 am said:

I need Japanese audio with my MGS4 thank you!

+ wallhugger on March 1st, 2008 at 1:00 pm said:

true but that news isn’t really that new anymore… okay neither is MGS4 and Resistance 2 :p but those were the games that were stated as exclusives and I was too lazy to think any further than the current news in the mag. ^^

Will the bundle come out in Europe?
cuz I need a second PS3 with BC in case my old one dies like the first PS2 died… (one month after the guarantee period.)

+ leukoplast on March 1st, 2008 at 2:15 pm said:

Also, when and if I can mange to get the beta pre-order, will I have to go pick it up at my local shop? Will they call to let me know? Or will it be directly shipped to me or something?

+ cmargary on March 2nd, 2008 at 6:07 am said:

Sorry but not japanese audio for us and no english audio for japanese people…. Kojima explain it that even the 50GB of the blu ray disc wasn’t enough for them and had to compress many things…

If 50GB wasn’t enough… imagine how big will be metal gear 4… this game will be the game of the year really and this really happens when a developer only works on one system…

+ BYU-I on March 2nd, 2008 at 5:35 pm said:

That would be very impresive if MGS4 fills the whole blu ray disc. Sooo is it true?

+ Keysersoze10033 on March 2nd, 2008 at 5:50 pm said:

Can’t wait

+ VinnyJ on March 2nd, 2008 at 11:08 pm said:

They should just compress what’s necessary, then decompress it when a Hard Drive install is done.

I can’t wait to see how this will go working with PS HOME.

I’m just so excited!

GREAT GAME! Now, get to work on a top-down-view online multiplayer version where you have to march your armies against those of other players. You know, kinda like a rhythm game plus Starcraft.

+ superbone547 on March 3rd, 2008 at 11:45 am said:

@101 a recent IGN srticle is saying that Hideo Kojima wants MORE space than blu-ray can give him right now anyways, so it seems like it’ll be a 50 gig disc.

I’m now off to call gamestop about my preorder.

+ PlaystationOwn3r on March 3rd, 2008 at 5:51 pm said:

I want the PSN cards. They will take money out of my wallet :[

+ Rudy_R on March 3rd, 2008 at 9:05 pm said:

Is the game going to be on a single Blue-Ray?

Kojima said that one disk wasnt enough to hold all of the MGS4 grateness. (50gb +,WOW)

+ Rudy_R on March 3rd, 2008 at 9:38 pm said:

I say give Kojima another disk. I can already see a detail difference between early MGS4 trailers and current trailers. Especially the one where Snake injects his neck. I really don’t care if the 2disk game costs $80+ dollars, I’ll still buy it. To be honest, MGS4 is the reason I bought the PS3, and later my 1080p LCD. Kojima wanted MGS4 to be of the highest quality achievable, and it shows in the first demonstrations and cut scenes made.

If I were Sony I would give Kojima a Terabyte just to be on the safe side. (Joke)

+ Dew87 on March 4th, 2008 at 2:36 am said:

Sony, do you have any plans to release this bundle in Europe and other parts of the world that’s been supporting the Playstation brand for a decade, or will you keep treating us like second class citizens?

I think I speak for a lot of Playstation fans around the world frustrated from getting the short end of the stick.

Please, do the right thing for once. Don’t forget the regions that kept PS3 afloat when things weren’t so rosy for the system not so long ago.

Hopefully no one else did this recently, but here is a brand new response from Konami regarding the status of the online beta pre-sell program. What follows first is my inquiry, and then their response.:

Saturday, March 22, 2008.
I have been searching for this information for quite some time.I would like to know what the most current information is regarding Metal Gear Solid 4.Specifically,how the pre-order program will be implemented. Will pre-orders placed before April take precedence over pre-orders placed during April concerning the limited online beta access downloadable codes and pre-order DVD?Your official statement seems to suggest otherwise, stating that the pre-order program doesn’t start until April. However, there are a lot of pre-orders that have already been placed several months prior to April. Will any of the people who have placed those orders have access to the online beta for Metal Gear Solid 4?I have not been able to obtain more information from the retailer I have placed my pre-order with because they have not received any information from you.I would also like to know if there is going to be a limited edition similiar to Japan’s in the USA.Please let me know as soon as possible.Thank you.

Monday, March 24, 2008:
“Dear Konami Customer,

Thank you for contacting Konami Customer Support.

In response to your questions about MGS4, I’m very sorry to tell you we have no information at this time regarding this.

Please keep an eye on our website for information about developments and future plans.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

KDE-US, Customer Support

Hours of Operation: Mon-Fri 9am PST to 5:30pm”

Not very enlightening. Perhaps they’ll wait until the day they release the online beta codes before they tell us exactly what the situation with that is. What is the holdup Konami? Tell us what’s going on already!
