UPDATE: The PS3 Firmware (v3.00) update is now live. You can use this update to upgrade your system software to version 3.00.
Just in time for the official launch of the 120 GB PlayStation 3, PS3 Firmware (v3.00) will be available shortly. As detailed during gamescom 09, 3.00 will introduce a number of great features, including “What’s New,” a redesigned status indicator and Friends List, and support for new avatars and dynamic themes.

I have to say that I am more than a little disappointed with the 3.0 update.
Key groans for me are:
FONT feels like your 1080p screen is actually running in 480p mode and ‘shouting’ everything at you! There needs to be a font-size installed or classic font sizing.. far too large!
Friends List is TERRIBLE! — It looks cheap and nasty and feels the same too! Shimmers when loading and just does nothing to enhance what was already there (speed, ease of use..) and instead takes away with some cheap shoddy surroundings! Get rid.. or allow for classic display of old.
Particle effect: .. as it stands, it’s not a Jeff Minter light-show is it? So what on earth is it doing being default in the menu? I’m sure the themes may be interesting but as it stands its boring.
BBC iPlayer: .. without access to HD content its hardly that interesting is it?
Everything else: ?? I feel little need to explore because the issues above are ruining the experience!
3.0 is the new 1.5 .. its terrible!
Definitely can’t wait to see exactly what is added in this new release. It’s September 1st but not 12 yet so just a few more hours till it comes out, I guess.

However I agree on the subtitle support and chapter support would not hurt either since MP4 can support that.

Why didn’t they demo that on the video? Who thought a bunch of gray boxes looked good on the XMB?

How am is that a fanboyish post? Isn’t it true? You can’t say 360 doesn’t have better features than the ps3. PS3 does have the hardware but not enough of the right features. I have both consoles but I mean if sony is going to be like this then wtf am I wasting my money and time for? If anything your the fanboy. :p
Most of the update is fine with me, but I really hate how the PS3 handles buffering. It’s just not programmed correctly. I tried out the Pulse stream from the “What’s New” tab and it has to stop every 2 seconds to re-buffer the stream. Just program it so it waits the necessary time from the start. Even if that takes 5 minutes, I’d prefer that to having the stream stop once it’s started.
I just think it’s ironic how everyone was excited about this update, and now everyone hates it! Some stuff I like, but what I hate is what they took out, like no “Playstation 3” screen or jingle when you boot up a game. I would’ve liked a new screen and/or jingle, instead of just nothing. But, it does seem like games boot up faster. Some people might not like the excessive Playstation Store/website links, but I do like that if you select a link for something in the Store, it will take you straight to that product.
Sony, I hope you take our feedback seriously and adress all this with giving us options for the new XMB. The new XMB makes me weep, you downgraded a perfect menu. It’s doesn’t make any sense that you took away the awesome startup screen for games and replaced it with utter emptiness. The XMB looks much crapier now on my HDTV, you can’t even choose to take away the stupid PSS icon in the gamesection and videosection.
Please adress this as fast as you can Sony! D:

I’m very disappointed in this update. The font, scrolling ad, and box around friends have made me switch to disc autorun so i never have to look at or navigate that horrendous xmb again. Please change this and please don’t take 6 months to do it!

As for the new links directly to the store, they are somewhat nifty but it’s a kick in the teeth when you live in Canada, or any other region, that does not receive any video store content. Now I have on my XMB an icon that when activated will tell me that I cannot access this information because it is not available to me. Come on Sony, why do this to your customers.
While there are few minor improvements new FW is still a major fail… huge unchangeable fonts, ugly and pointless change to friends list, marketing ticker that cannot be turned off and 3, count them three, links to PSN store. No new avatars but a promise that we’ll have to pay for new ones like we do for new themes.
Worst has to be even slower in game XMB that makes it painful to use while in game.
PSWii2008 HA! You nailed it right there! I was already searching for the very first person besides me who would notice that and you’re the lucky winner. When the video was shown in where Eric explained the update everyone was ooow aaaah, nice, beautiful and look now at the reactions.
How can i remove that news ticker in the upper right corner of the screen? I dont want to have to be reminded 30 times on what is on the PSN.
If you’re going to keep those gray boxes in the Friendlist, at least put more info into it (Trophycount- and level, for instance)!
O, and you could also redesign the user profiles (when you click on a user) and let us add more info (like clannames, favorite games, URL’s etc).
One more thing about those ugly gray boxes: Make them black and half transparant (and/or use a proper ‘Blending mode’). This way, they’ll be less ugly and will go with most themes much better.
Otherwise it’s a great update. I’ve yet to download it for my own PS3 (checked it out a friend earlier today), but I’m still awaiting my FOURTH PS3 from the Sony Customer Support. :-(
To many added features that we really didn’t need and or want. Don’t get me wrong some were cool. But there are way to many PSstore Icons and There is no voice chat or BC for PS2 games. I guess we will have to wait a little longer. Also what is up with a $3 theme (that is a little pricy) for a theme LOL :)

After update, inFAMOUS keep doing strange loud noises at random (gameplay and menu screen). I’m using HDMI cable. Any help?

You can be sure i’ll NEVER AGAIN update on day 1. From now on, I will always wait a week, watch youtube, read forums before updating.

Was the the 3.0 significant because you wanted the slim to launch at a whole number rather than a 2.9? The ticker is useless, having the store icon plastered everywhere is overkill, and the gray box friends list is bad. Plus why change the opening launch sequence? if you wanted to change the logo fine but I like the original better than this. The dynamic theme is nice but at $3 a pop no thanks.
I think I will call this update 3.0 the overload of useless information that updates once a week

Finally, a reasonable response. I don’t envy the staff having to read through all of these comments that, frankly, make me embarrassed to be call myself a PlayStation fan. I can understand not enjoying certain aspects of an update, we’ve grown so accustomed to the old style and change is a difficult thing, but really…must we resort to such childish behavior to get our message across?
There are a few of you here who have reasonably explained what is wrong with the update and I’d like to thank you all for being mature enough to do so in a constructive fashion, as I will attempt to do at the risk of sounding redundant…
My only complaint/s are the following:
Font/Icon sizing on my HDTV is a bit too large. Offering a scale option in the System Settings should remove this issue. Perhaps the default could be as it is (for SDTV’s), while offering a setting adjustment for XMB Display (SDTV/HDTV).
Meh, the friends list isnt to bad, the boxes just seem a bit empty.
Im sure if you guys were to fill it up with a users level, level percentage and trophy count it would look a bit better and alot less empty.
(also you wouldnt have to click on your friends name to see all that info because it would be in the friends list)
(and yes being able to switch back to my old font size would be nice too)
besides that 3.0 seems fine to me.

CROSS GAME CHATTING(meaning it doesnt matter what we might be doing playing a game, watching a movie or tv show we can still talk to up to five of our friends through voice chat)
REAL AVATARS(meaning allow us to take pictures with the playstation eye and place that picture as our avatars)

I am beginning to wonder just what is going on with the people who ‘beta test’ this stuff out on behalf of Sony?
It seems to me that they spend far too much time trying to get on a “beta list” for the sake of trying new things out and just being there.. but then do not put the work in to giving feedback on the very thing they are using. How on earth can quality control have allowed this to be sent through to the public without understanding that it was creating more problems than it was resolving?

This has to be the only update that has mostly been a downgrade. Like everyone else is saying the excessive store icons, huge font, and ugly friends list needs to be fixed.
GIVE US GIF. PICTURE SUPPORT THAT ANIMATES THEM. GIVE US THE OPTION TO USE VIDEO AS WALLPAPER AS WELL…GIVE US OUR OWN DYNAMIC THEME MAKEING ABILITIES BASICLY !!!
Also, that little “box” with the new ticker and whatnot… yeah, I don’t want that at the top of my screen. Ditch the frame, give us the option to turn off the news feed, and please make the avatar larger.
I liked the update, but the “improved” friend list is awful. I thought it was going to be different, including complete user stats and new avatars, etc.

Wow. Fail. Im not updating my ps3. Im Keeping my PS3 update where its at and going to “Modify” my ps3 again so I can sign into PlayStation network without your stupid update.
Wow, please gives us the option to make the FONT and ICON SIZE smaller to how it originally was.

And that friends list…. why are there gray boxes? It gives us no extra information, just obscures the background and doesn’t blend well with the XMB at all.
One last thing, option to turn off the scrolling ticker. Please make one.
I want to turn the information bar (advertising thing OFF). Please don’t give us crap fluffy updates that do nothing more than add a ton of useless icons and advertising to our system. It is NOT appreciated. I want what I bought and paid for – a system with no achievements (err… trophies – let me OPT OUT) and a system with no advertising. A simple elegant system – not this junky unattractive thing with a white bar around it that looks like a web design 101 student made it.
Give me GAMING UPDATES. Where is cross game chat so we can use online chat in games where chat is BROKEN (Sacred 2 and Battlefield 1943). Where is a folder system for an extended Friends list to play online with more people.

Wow. Lol, I haven’t even updated my ps3 to 3.0 Yet. From what I’m reading, I’m afraid to.
I have a fully Backwards comapatable PS3 60GB model, I was playing FF10 when I noticed that there was a new update, I was like wtf. So I looked it up.
I like the animated themes….But thats all, The rest of the features just F-ing SUCK.
I mean really…”Advertising” on every single Icon in the XMB! WOW. Like I give a….Crap.

The three PS Store links are really not needed. Wow, I save 2 seconds if I’m under Game and go to that PS Store icon, instead of going over to PSN and using that one. Thanks?

The new friend’s list looks horrible. If you really want to keep it like that, at least give us the option of changing it back if we want to. Give your customers options if you decide to ‘upgrade’ (in this case ‘downgrade’) features. That goes for the new font as well.
You got it right with the sparkly background though, so hi-five for that!
The rest of the update is fine. Just give your customers more options when you decide to change design elements, and you won’t have everybody bashing you with all these demands and negative feedback. Maybe you could even get feedback from the community on things in the update before you actually release it? That’s an idea.
I downloaded the firmware before I came to work this morning. I haven’t had a chance to really test it out. However, I did see the new boot-up screen and icons. I have to agree with most here; they are way too big for a big screen tv. Awful.

Just like all are saying, bigger icons are good for SDTV’s, but I prefered the old look for my HDTV (I use PC LCD 24′ screen, and I sit at it like a computer. Icons are pretty big for that) Should be a theme option.
Friends list has the gray background. I like this for certain themes, but it should be an option.
Remove the playstation store icon under the video section for COUNTRIES OUTSIDE OF SERVICE! Or, you can finally add video support for Canada, either way :)

Wow you gotta be kidding me. I hate this update, I cant listen to my music while browsing, I cant listen to music while doing anything else. I don’t care about the friends list cause i don’t spend time in the section anyways just give me back the power to multi-task with music on. I officially hate you with a passion now.
Oh man, why did you change the font size! It’s way too big, and it makes my trophy list look ugly. Even some of the descriptions are too long now -_- and the friend list is damn ugly :( I want the old list without the background to be selectable.
A funny thing is the display of my trophy list ^^ my SFIV percentage went up to 91%. Seems like the platinum trophy isn’t part of your total progression any longer. But that font, guys! That damn font -_-“

I never really post my opinions on new firmware updates as I always look forward to new features that you introduce. But this new update seems more like a regression in my opinion. The ideal of the PS3 I thought was to be a high-end, next-gen system. You sure made me pay a high premium when first released at $599, which I swallowed and didn’t complain about, while waiting in line for the PS3 for 3 nights. But some of the decisions behind the new update make me think otherwise. And when you first boot up the PS3 pre-3.0, you knew that you had a simple elegance with the interface displaying a high-def 1080P resolution. But now, it looks along the lines of the Wii’s 480P, SUPER-SIZED font. Please allow the option to manually adjust the font size. The size is way too big for my HDTV. It makes the interface that once was, stylish and elegant, look extremely cheap. I paid too much money for my Bravia to make it look like a step down from what it was by making my TV look like a SDTV.
