August 2012 PSN Top Sellers: CounterStrike: Global Offensive Storms the Charts

Morgan Haro's Avatar + Posted by Morgan Haro on Sep 12, 2012 // Community Manager, PlayStation Digital Platforms

PSN PLAY 2012 provided a ton of great new PSN games; from Sound Shapes, to Papo & Yo; but when it came to sales, Counter Strike: Global Offensive emerged as the victor. Valve’s hit franchise debuted with a powerful shot of multiplayer-centric action, so if you haven’t checked it out yet, download it today and get on the battlefield.

Representing more of the PSN PLAY 2012 lineup, Sound Shapes debuts on this month’s top sellers list, coming in at No. 4 on PS3 and No. 1 on PS Vita! Congratulations to Queasy Games and Santa Monica Studios on another hit.

PS2 Classics had a great month as well with the addition of War of the Monsters, Shinobi, and Psychonauts. We’re proud of the PS2 Classic War of the Monsters taking the top spot this month as Starhawk developer Dylan Jobe worked on the game (check out his retrospective post from his time developing the game).

Also, we’re welcoming PS minis to the lineup this month, so thanks to the readers who suggested we add these. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, and we’ll see you next month with September’s numbers. Any guesses who will have the top spot?

I really enjoyed the Walking dead episode 3. My only complaint about it was that glitch that made you quit the game and re load to by pass things flying in the sky.

Once again, FF7 tops the PSone charts, followed by LoD.
I’m glad I bought these games earlier. Who knows how much they will cost in the “Neolithic Classics” section of PlayStation 9?

Could someone PLEASE get me in contact with Cristian Cardona!? I was emailed by him concerning my entry for the Sly Cooper Treasure Design contest, but I must have deleted the email without knowing what it was. I’ve been trying to contact him for days, but can’t get through anywhere.

Can you expand on the Minis and get some developers of games for Android and iOS to produce for Vita’s touchscreen, after all it is like a phone’s touch screen if not better. Popcap comes to mind, bring us bejeweled blitz (like the facebook version) to the Vita. You keep putting out bejeweled games on PS3 but they are the stale boring versions I want the fun Blitz stuff. !!!!!!! In other words keep popping out 99 cents games and apps!!!!!

kinda disappointing to see that boring fps counterstrike top the list, but at least Walking Dead 3 is second place. :)
I can’t wait for episode 4. Hopefully won’t have to wait as long. :P

Walking Dead Episode 3 is definitely a must among anything that has released within recent memory. The series is better than anything from Telltale that I’ve played previously and changed the bad taste that the TV series left every season. People who love zombies will enjoy it. If you like story, you will love it. I don’t even think I’ve grown an emotional attachment to characters as I have with this title before.

FFVII reclaims top PSone classics spot! Probably helped that it was a launch title for the Vita’s PSone line-up and the buzz from the PC re-release didn’t hurt either.

@8 Hopefully PlayStation Mobile will help with that.

They should have Rovio bring the overpriced Angry Birds trilogy to PS Vita. Makes the most sense for PS Vita.

Amazing that Madden 13 is #3 on the big list. Is EA’s Season Ticket (3 days early for the game) actually working, or do people just like having the game on their hard drive? Or, do PSN games just not sell, thus the 4 days Madden was available to the masses meant more than the 31 days most of the rest were available?

How was that bug not found in the game before it was released, doesn’t Sony test the games before releasing it on the PlayStation store?

As a beta tester for Counter Strike: Global Offensive on PC, it was great to finally play this game with a controller and at a 30 fps. It holds up surprisingly well what with the Source engine running PS3, it feels exactly like Counter Strike no matter which console you play on…I do hope CS:GO PS3 recieves the zombies mod soon. I also still mourn the lose of cross-platform play between PC and Mac…..that was a sad day indeed.

Thanks for putting the Minis up Morgan. Hope this encourages more indie devs to put their games on PSN and more people to buy Minis. Would be nice if there was a youtube link for them when the weekly update goes up.

Good to see Papo & Yo on there too. Buy this game people!

Sad to see Dyad not on there though. Poor sales? The Closure developer said sales of his game on PSN were “dire” so I’m thinking PlayStation gamers just don’t support indies as well as Steam and XBLA users. A lot of indie devs just bypass PSN altogether these days.

Speaking of which, whoever decided to include that terrible Expendables 2 game in the PLAY campaign should be replaced. 34 on Metacritic. There were a lot more deserving games for that slot and it was a poor decision. The PLAY campaign should be global too, like XBLA’s Summer of Arcade. This is the problem with Sony, there is just no co-ordination.

GUESS WHAT EVERYONE :)
*Confirmed*
New Little Kings Story will release in NA October 2nd, but the thing is. Only as a PSN Download so no physical copy. Not a big deal if the game isn’t to big. I haven’t heard of the price yet, hopefully $20 so i can buy with 1 psn card.
Also sucks Megaman Maverick Hunter X isn’t in the top 5 anymore but i biught over 2 years ago so i have no complaint lol.
Can we get a interview and a gameplay vid of the PS Vita version of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. We only hear it will have the extact same content and dlc as ps3. But i also wanna see the graphics, cause i know it was slightly turned down.

Putting TWD episodes on the PS3 Full Games list is pretty funny. No matter how much you try to convince people, they are not full games on their own. All of them combined make the full game. Getting pretty sick of Sony trying to pass each one off as it’s own game.

WHAAAAAAT!!!!!!!!??????? Pardon my language, but why the !@$# isn’t Final Fantasy 6 on that list? Hard to believe FF8 was on there before FF6. FF8 was one of the worst in the series.

The glitch in Walking Dead Episode 3 had me going crazy. But a simple reload of the game fixed it. Debating on weather or not to get I Am Alive. My anticipation for The Last of Us is uncontrollable and this game seems, in certain ways, similar to the videos i’ve watched.

Side Note: I’ve also been wanting to play my PS Vita but ever since i finished Rayman Legends, Uncharted, and played a few AR games, there doesn’t seem to be much interest. Unit 13 didn’t spark my interest, and the Resistance game is, for lack of a better term, horrid. I’ve been debating on Galaxy Rush, the demo was pretty fun, but i’m not sure if it has enough replay value for me. Of course i’m waiting on AC Liberation, LBP Vita, and COD:BOD. Any ideas on what’s worth a purchase?

@25 Mattsta001 – Won a code for the game, and… I just don’t click with it. Maybe I would after a bit (Elite Beat Agents took a months hiatus until I was absorbed), but from what I can remember, it was just hard to be accurate between the radial controls and determining what I’m looking out for. I get the feeling it would go over better on PC/Mac/Linux, simply because of the greater control a mouse can offer.

What drew me to it in the first place was its aesthetic, but it is mostly lights and colors (even, say, Beat Hazard has defined ships), so as much as I like the lightshow, it just doesn’t seem to be quite my “thing”. Who all it IS a “thing” for, then, may be the cause for however its sales are.
