Ninja Platformer N++ Dashes to PS4

Hello! We’re Mare and Raigan from Metanet Software, and we’re really excited to finally be able to announce that N++ will be coming to PS4! One of the requests we get most frequently is a version of N for PlayStation, so we’re delighted to reveal that yes, it’s happening! And it’s gonna be great.

If you haven’t heard of us, we’re the creators of N, N+ and now the upcoming N++. If you want to read more about those games, check out this post about their backstory.

N++ on PS4

Next year will mark the 10-year anniversary of N, which should tell you that we’ve been working on this series for a very long time. We’ve learned a lot about N over the years, and now it’s time for us to take all the loose ends, crazy experiments, and things we never got a chance to do, and combine them all into one final version. Our goal is for this to be the definitive version, the one which we ourselves would want to play over all other versions: N++.

We can’t wait to say more! In the meantime, the teaser trailer above should set the stage for what is to come.

N++ on PS4

So what can you expect from N++? Well, it’s a fast-paced, physics-based platformer starring a ninja, but there is a whole lot more to it than that. There will be new multiplayer modes, new enemies, new levels, new graphics and sound, and a new editor. We’ve even built a database so that all user-made levels can be shared globally, including leaderboards with replays for every level.

As you can see in the teaser trailer, we’ve been redesigning the game’s visuals, which we’re really excited about… we have lots more to say about that, but it will have to wait for the next post!

How can we be so sure N++ is going to be amazing? Well for one thing, we’re working with our friend Shawn McGrath, who made Dyad. Shawn is really good at programming, and – more importantly – he’s just as picky and critical as we are about making sure every aspect of the game is as well-made as possible.

We’re also thrilled to announce that N++ is part of Sony’s Pub Fund program; Pub Fund is pretty awesome – not only is it confirmation that the people we’re working with at Sony really believe in us and our project, but beyond that it gives us the freedom to pull out all the stops, and to really ensure that N++ will be the absolute best it can be. Stay tuned!

  • Hi, will your game be coming out for PS3 also ?

  • Not complaining at all, I loved N+, but is there any chance of a Vita release in the future? I know N+ had handheld releases several months after the console release.

    • We really want N++ on Vita too! We’re going to try to make that happen, but since our team consists of only 3 people, we have to focus on the PS4 version first. Rest assured though, we’re on it!

  • THIS WOULD BE PERFECT ON THE VITA! Make it happen PLEASE!

  • Huge fan.

Loved N+ on 360 XBLA and PSP and have been waiting 5 years for N++

Not getting a PS4 for the forseeable future, though. I am guessing if you didn’t announce it on stage there is little hope for an answer here but is there a reason this isn’t coming to Vita with so many other Indies going multiplat? Any hope for a Vita port early next year maybe?

  • Really bizarre that it’s not coming to Vita.

  • This is awesome news. I used to play this all the time on my computer. Definitely looking forward to this:)
& do think this would be awesome on Vita as well 8)

  • Sigh. Played N+ on the PSP. I’m not even into home consoles and N++ is PS4 exclusive? No Vita?

The gameplay of N games are more inclined to portable gaming than home consoles.

I don’t get this, just like a lot of the other people commenting on the page.

  • Instead of a lot of people being happy, the “PS4 Exclusive” thing killed the news.

Announce this as Vita exclusive and it could have rocked.

  • I played N+ a lot on PSP. I would’ve liked to play N++ on Vita without having to buy a $400 accessory.

  • I’ve always wanted to try this.

  • Glad to hear it’s in consideration for Vita. N+ was one of my favorite handheld games ever, and I’d love to have its sequel available on the go. Definition of a perfect pick-up-and-play title. Extremely happy it’s in development, you guys have my support 100% and I look forward to picking this up when I get a PS4.

  • That’s great news that a Vita version is being considered, Mare. Understandable with you guys being such a small team. Couldn’t you guys have another dev work on the Vita version like Slick did on PSP? I would rather have it right from you guys, but if that’s what it takes to get a Vita version…..

And my sentiment is like saveur’s. Huge fan of the series and just glad to see it finally announced. Whether it’s a Vita version or when I pick up a PS4 sometime down the line….this game will be mine.

    • Thanks! So glad to hear you’re a fan of the series :)

The history of N+ is a little confusing — we (Metanet) worked with Slick on the XBLA version, but Metanet licensed the IP to another team entirely for the DS/PSP version, because we didn’t have time to work on both, but unfortunately that’s what we ended up having to do anyway. One of the things we most regret about N+ was that working on the two versions at the same time left us very little time to make sure they were perfect — we devoted as much time as we could when we realized they weren’t up to our standards, but still came up short because by that time the games were almost done. So with N++, we want to learn from our mistakes and give it all the time we have up front.

    • So after the release of the PS4 version, we’ll start looking into the Vita version, and we expect the process will be much quicker since we’ll have already perfected the game — we’ll just have to tweak the graphics and UI to ensure it looks just as good on the Vita’s smaller screen. We’re up to the challenge though — because even though we weren’t completely happy with the DS/PSP versions of N+, we loved playing the game while traveling! So we’re working hard to make that possible with an even better version, N++.

  • I was a big fan of the PSP version of N+ but I always did kind of feel that it wasn’t quite up to the level of the XBLA version. Interesting to hear what happened behind the scenes and even you guys agree.

Kind of hard to fault you guys for wanting to make the best versions possible for the game, so I’ll be looking forward to a Vita version whenever it’s done. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

    • N+ was good, but we always suspected it could be better. So that’s why we’re making N++, to prove that to ourselves, and to make the definitive version of this series.

  • I’m really happy to hear you say that you have plans for the Vita. I almost jumped out of my seat when I heard N++ announced. However, there was an audible, awkward pause in the room after “N++ will debut exclusively on PS4 this winter” where the entire audience thinks “Not Vita? :'( ”

In the official youtube version of the press conference it’s at about 54:50.

  • Really excited for this, and for the promise of a Vita version. I was really miffed that the PSP version of N+ (or Every Extend Extra Extreme) wasn’t available on PSN, so I couldn’t play it on my Vita.

Sounds like I’ll be able to now! :)

Any new features to mention, like co-op play, HD audio, or Move support?

    • Awesome! Currently we’re working on the graphics, but sound is next! There will definitely be a co-op mode, and we’re figuring out some other, new game modes too. We’re planning a few fun surprises.

  • I really enjoyed playing N+ on my PSP, would really love to get it for the Vita since it’s going to be considered. :)

By the way, I heard the PSP version was announced it was going to be released on PSN , but not for a while. That was a couple of years ago, but it never has. What ever happened to it?

    • I think that was just a rumour. The developer and publisher involved with N+ DS and PSP have both since gone under, so that game is lost to the aether.

  • You had me at “Shawn McGrath”. Dyad is one of my favorite games. Really excited to see more of this!

  • I AM SO READY!
    Fellow ninjas add me
And to the metanet devs, what are you gonna do about leaderboard cheaters?

    • We’re developing some more robust cheat protection systems to try to lower the number of potential cheaters, plus a way to remove cheated highscores should any make it through.

  • 3 person team? That’s crazy.

  • THIS GAME IS PERFECT FOR THE VITA NOT THE PS4..SMH

  • Awesome to hear a Vita version will be strongly considered!

I have no plans on getting a PS4, sorry.

  • Not sure exactly what this game is, but sure I would love to have it for both PS4 and Vita :)
