Ys: Memories of Celceta Coming to PS Vita on November 26th

Tom Lipschultz's Avatar + Posted by Tom Lipschultz on Nov 07, 2013 // Localization Specialist, XSEED

It’s Thanksgiving weekend. Your whole family is in a tryptophan-induced coma from eating too much turkey. But you? You ate nothing but pumpkin pie, so you’re still wide awake.

Fortunately, you’ve got your trusty Vita on hand, along with a copy of the Ys: Memories of Celceta Silver Anniversary Edition, which launches on November 26th. So while your in-laws all dream of sugarplums and dandelions, you’ll be off exploring the Great Forest and saving the world from evil yet again.

The latest installment in Nihon Falcom’s 25 year-old RPG franchise, Ys: Memories of Celceta, is a complete reimagining of the series’ legendary fourth installment. To make a long story short(ish), Ys IV is a game that’s been published in Japan three times previously — and all were completely different games that were developed independently by different companies.

Despite each one introducing and greatly expounding upon some of the franchise’s most pivotal lore, Falcom never actually created their own version of the game… until now.

And in keeping with tradition, this is no mere remake. The story is brand new, and the land of Celceta has been expanded from the usual handful of maps to an overworld so massive, you could easily fit the combined worlds of every other Ys title to date inside it… several times over, at that.

Ys: Memories of Celceta, 04Ys: Memories of Celceta, 02

If you’ve never played an Ys game before, though, there’s absolutely no need to fear. Virtually every Ys experience is a standalone one to begin with, and this game really drives the point home by beginning its narrative with Adol losing all his memories. Thwarting the trope, however, his missing moments have taken physical form as glowing orbs scattered throughout the Great Forest, each of which can be regained with a mere touch. These range from important details about his recent excursions, to cherished memories of his childhood (A series first!), mixed in with perhaps even a stray memory or two from someone else altogether…

Solving the mystery of who he is and what happened to him in the Great Forest previously is only one piece of the puzzle. There’s political intrigue lurking around every turn, signs of a lost, centuries-old civilization beginning to surface throughout the land, and serious accusations mounting against our poor protagonist by people he simply can’t remember. Add to this a massive yet highly varied land to map out in meticulous detail, and Ys: Memories of Celceta easily becomes Adol’s largest and longest journey of all time.

Fortunately, he doesn’t have to go it alone, as the party system from Ys Seven makes its triumphant return with numerous tweaks to help keep things fresh. Switch among your three party members with the touch of a button, or use the Vita’s rear touch pad to strategize your party’s AI behavior. Learn newer, more devastating skills by taking down massive creatures through real-time, action-based combat. This is all aided by an equipment crafting system so versatile that even the weakest weapon or piece of armor in the game becomes a valuable component for something greater down the line.

Ys: Memories of Celceta, 05

Ys: Memories of Celceta, 03Ys: Memories of Celceta, 01

The game itself can be yours for $39.99 this November 26th (at retail and on PlayStation Store) — though if you can track down a copy of the limited Silver Anniversary Edition, $59.99 will net you not only the game itself, but also a 120+ page book full of maps, strategies, and art, along with a 3-CD compilation of music (both original and arranged) from throughout the Ys series’ storied history. Plus, a detailed cloth map of the lands of Celceta, and a logo-emblazoned compass.

So make sure you’ve got a nice, juicy turkey ready to go this Thanksgiving, and when everyone else is asleep, fire up your copy of Ys: Memories of Celceta and get lost within the Great Forest. It may be a little dangerous, but believe me, the rewards are well worth the risk. You’ll be thankful you made the journey!

And a very good place to jump in it is! Remember, though, that this is a constantly-evolving series, so every Ys experience is different from its brethren — sometimes subtly, sometimes completely.

They’re all still Ys, though, through and through… and if you find yourself enjoying Celceta (which I’ve no doubt you will), I highly recommend checking out Ys: The Oath in Felghana afterward to get a sense of the series’ roots. It’s fascinating to see how much Ys has changed this past quarter-century, and playing some of the older games really helps drive home just how unique and fascinating the franchise is.

Oh man, you’ve still got three unplayed Ys games (four if you count I and II as separate entries) + Celceta to experience? I’ve played through the whole series, and kind of wish I could “un-play” a few of them so I could recapture that “first experience” feeling once again. Because there is seriously nothing quite like the feeling of firing up a new Ys for the very first time. ;)

Celceta is definitely a good jumping-off point for the series. It has old-school roots and charm with new-school mechanics, and a nice balance between story and gameplay (many Ys games are much lighter on the former and heavier on the latter). I think you’ll have a very nice time with this game.

Ha! I preordered this solely so I had something to keep me occupied while visiting in-laws. I also preordered the Silver Edition, but I will say, that compass looks painfully stupid. Everything else looks top notch, but that looks like a cheap scout compass with a sticker attached to it. I wish it would have been left out altogether (and I’ll probably be just dropping it in the trash). :P

    Tom Lipschultz's Avatar

+ Tom Lipschultz on November 7th, 2013 at 10:24 am said:

Fair enough. If it helps, though, that’s no sticker — the logo is quite literally emblazoned upon the compass lid itself. So it’s probably at least a little better than you’re expecting it to be!

I think the rest of the set will more than make up for it, however, even if you do end up discarding the compass. The 3-CD set contains tracks from around 30 different sources, and adds up to just shy of 4 hours of music (none of which is repeated from any of our Musical Selections discs save for “Rush Out!” from Ys Seven, which was featured again solely so we could bring you guys the full-length version this time). The cloth map, then, is absolutely gorgeous… and the book! 120+ pages with maps, strategies and concept sketches, all written in a first-person perspective from Adol’s point of view, in a handwriting font, on faux waterlogged parchment paper, with notes in the margins and all kinds of markings and asides… easily the nicest book we’ve ever provided in any LE to date, at least in my opinion.

So don’t let the compass bring you down! It’s just one component of many, after all. ;)

I’m SOOOOO ready for this game. I have watched and waited, as it got pushed back from release date to release date. I was heart-broken when it didn’t come out on Nov. 5th. That would have been the BEST time to have something great to do, until PS4 came out. Now, it’s going to come out a week and a half after the PS4 (which come to think of it will be ok too)…..I just wanted it a LONG TIME AGO.

Glad to see it’s FINALLY got a real, SOLID, release date. I will be buying it. Glad to see an RPG hitting the Vita. Thank you XSEED, please keep them coming!!!!!!

Sorry it took so long. It’s been tough coordinating our schedule with Falcom’s, as both we and they have been super-duper busy lately. And then getting all the LE components drawn up and produced has been another lengthy, complicated procedure as well.

In the end, though, it’ll all be worth it! As someone said on our Twitter recently, delays are temporary, but mediocrity is forever — and we’ve done our best to ensure that “mediocre” is never a word anyone will ever use when describing Ys Celceta. ;)

It is their other flagship series, and it’s interesting to see the contrast between the two — Ys and Legend of Heroes are very much like two sides of the same coin. The former is all about crazy fast-paced, frenetic action set to ’80s hair metal, while the latter is all about slowly and methodically constructing a complex, multi-faceted world. Some will undoubtedly favor one over the other, but I think it’s telling of Falcom’s versatility as a developer that they’re able to create two such disparate styles of game and have them both turn out so beautifully. It’d be like if a musician were able to turn out both death metal and classical-styled symphonies, and have them sound equally lovely.

All of our release dates are “ship dates,” meaning that’s when the games leave the warehouse. For some, the game will arrive on store shelves that same day, but for others, it may not arrive on store shelves until a day or two later. I know this can be a bit frustrating, but we do this to ensure that you guys get the game a.s.a.p. I mean, think about the alternative: we could’ve announced the game for a Friday, November 29th release, and guaranteed it would be in stores for absolutely everyone that day… but that would mean we’d be shipping the game on Tuesday the 26th and telling stores not to sell it to you until Friday, even if they got it in stock right away.

And we’re not about to tell stores not to sell our game the second they get it in stock. No, we’d much rather be up-front and tell you guys when we’re scheduled to unleash it upon the world, giving you a chance to pick it up the second that box arrives at your local GameStop.

So just keep your fingers crossed that your store will have it in stock right away, and if not, please do accept our apologies for the inconvenience.

Cause my friends in the states get it same day and I get 2 days later ruining the co-op factor of the game, but I guess it’s whatever you like. It just confirms to me not to preorder XSEED games no more. I still love and will buy the games, but I preorder to get things day of not later. Hopefully in the future, we’ll be better able to schedule Canadian releases to keep them in line with the U.S. rollout.

For those of us importing a Vita TV, will this have the patch included that makes it compatible (i.e. removes touchscreen dependency)?

Not right away, as the game was already mastered by the time Falcom had the patch ready to go. We’ll be looking into adding the patch in the future, though — and in the meantime, the game should still theoretically be Vita TV compatible, as its only required touchscreen interaction comes from its small handful of touch puzzles, and supposedly Vita TV will have limited touchscreen functionality (through use of the DualShock 3′s L3 and R3 buttons or something?).

I’m not certain exactly how that’s going to work, so I can’t confirm with 100% certainty right now that the game will be Vita TV compatible right out of the box, but it *should* be, and we’ll definitely be looking into the patch as soon as we can, as we’d very much like to ensure that fans can play the game on their TVs if they want to.

I had never heard of this franchise prior to the announcements that you were bringing this title to the West. I’m not sure if it’s for me, but given how excited everyone seems to be for it, I might have to give it a shot in December once I clear up my backlog.

The Vita has kind of been starving for quality RPGs in the west, so this is welcome indeed.

Side note: If you’re friendly with Carpe Fulgur could you guys team up to bring Recettear to the Vita?

Ys is an action RPG franchise with a major emphasis on the action. It’s known for its crazy fast combat, enormous bosses and amazing music (mostly ’80s-style rock and hair metal, but with violins!). It’s hard to describe the series — you really do just need to play it and see for yourself what it has to offer. The beauty lies in its smooth controls and tremendous sense of speed, as well as the satisfying feel of taking down huge enemies not as a matter of course, but as a victory you’ve legitimately earned.

If you’re interested in checking it out prior to the release of Celceta, we’ve released quite a few Ys titles on PSP and PC already. My only suggestion would be not to start with Ys I & II, as they’re a bit more “old-school” than the others, and might not sit as well with you unless you’re already familiar with the series (or are a dedicated retro-gamer like me!).

Or you can just wait for Celceta and jump in on the newest installment!

Regarding Carpe Fulgur, remember, neither we nor they are developers. If the original creators of Recettear don’t port the game to Vita, CF won’t be able to either — they can only release what the developers provide.

No Vita version exists — the first three Trails games have been released only for PC, PSP and PS3 in Japan, and we’re but humble publishers, so we can’t port games from one console/handheld to another ourselves — we depend on the Japanese developers for that.

If Falcom were to release a version of Trails 2 on Vita, we’d surely pursue it… but unless and until they do, we can only work with what exists so far.

Fortunately, the PSP version will surely be Vita-compatible, so you will still be able to play it on your PSV.

Its wonderful that your company has endured this long and continued to provide us with these amazing gems that would never make it out of Japan otherwise. Keep doing what you guys do. I recently picked up VK3 – a strange game, but engaging and I can see why you folks chose to localize it – and will certainly grab this the moment its out.

P.S. Any chance of the PSP YS that came out last year getting a port? I’m fine with just Vita stuff from now on too. If you’re lucky/ persistent enough, maybe you can pester SEGA for the rights to publish PSO 2 in NA. The continued micro-transactions could be a nice source of income for future projects. Just a thought!

PSP Ys that came out last year? The only Ys games on PSP are The Ark of Napishtim, The Oath in Felghana, I & II Chronicles and Seven, and all have been published in North America (the first by Konami, the rest by us). Are you thinking of Nayuta no Kiseki, perhaps? That’s not an Ys game, but it is “Ys-like” in gameplay, so I can see why it might be confused for one.

It’s not outside the realm of possibility, but its chances aren’t looking too great at the moment — the game has a lot of text, so it would be a pretty huge time and resource commitment on our end and on Falcom’s as well, for a game that would most likely see niche sales at best. It’s a fantastic game, though, and I’d love to work on it if I could, so I’ll keep pestering my coworkers and hope for the best. ;)

And man, PSO 2 seems pretty unlikely to leave Sega’s hands, but hey, you never know!

Tom,

Indeed, the game was Tales of Nayuta, from Falcom. Looked and played so much like YS that I assumed it was! I often import Japanese games even though my reading is terrible and stop playing half-way. A translated version of that would be epic.

Oh, and seeing as you’ve had decent luck with Ragnarok Odyssey (and Ace, soon), you might want to check out Lord of Apocalypse. Terrific hunting GE, MH like game. I didn’t have too bad of a time playing it even in Japanese and thei action is pretty terrific. Its been 2 years, so I doubt SE has any interest in localizing it at all. The fellah that wrote Deadly Premonition did that script too. Seemed delightfully crazy, even though I hardly understood a whiff of it. Worth checking out, though I imagine you already have all your projects lined up for the next while. Still it has decent DLC, long term playing prospects and monetization value, which is always nice.

Thanks for localizing this game. It looks great! I was planning on buying this off psn, but after seeing the Silver anniversary edition, I’ve decided to buy retail. I want that cloth map!

I’m excited that this game is coming out on Nov 26. Looks like it’ll be great for my Vita. I pre-ordered the LE and that map looks great!
This is my first Ys game so I hope I enjoy it. Is the soundtrack from all the past games and this one?

The 3 CDs include tracks from every Ys game, yes — though it’s only 3 CDs, covering 25 years’ worth of music (both original sound and arranged versions), so it’s more a sampler of the series’ music history than it is a soundtrack. A four-hour sampler, though! Because Ys music is too good not to cram as much as possible onto every disc. ;)

If you’ve never played an Ys game before, though, you are in for a treat — both in the game itself, and in its music. I hope you end up loving it as much as I do!

YS Silver Anniversary edition is one of the nice special Edition for Vita, I have seen and the reason I take US version over EU version.

That’s always been one of my favorites. Best remake of anything ever! (Ys Celceta doesn’t quite count as a remake, since it’s so completely different from any other version of Ys IV. It would be on the list of best remakes I’ve ever played too, though, otherwise!)

November is an epic Vita month.

Wow, so you’ve missed all the modern Ys games, including the reimagining of Ys 3 (Oath in Felghana)? You’re going to be in for quite a surprise, then, as the series has evolved quite a bit over the years! Fortunately, it’s never once lost its original charm, no matter how much the core gameplay may have changed.

Man, I really want that Silver Anniversary Edition. The music in the trailer is so epic I want a copy of that soundtrack to listen to on my computer. The only problem is coming out a few days before Black Friday and I rather save up for that. Don’t know if there will be more of these later as I know the limited edition Ys games sold out really quickly. Will the soundtrack be available to be purchased in mp3 format?

Bits and pieces of it already are, but remember, this isn’t actually a soundtrack — it’s a collection of original and arranged tracks from the Ys series’ 25-year history. Tracks from every single Ys game are accounted for, and around 30 different sources were used when compiling the track list for this 4-hour mega-album. Some of the sources date back as far as 1989, while others are as new as 2013. And this particular mix, arranged as it is on this 3-CD set, will not be available for MP3 download.

In the future, we may be able to sell the 3-CD set through our online store, but that won’t be for quite a long time (if it’s even able to be done at all). For the moment, the Silver Anniversary Edition will be the only way to get your hands on this particular music mix.

I have the Silver Edition pre-ordered already, and I don’t even have a Vita yet! Its likely something I’ll put on a Christmas list. I just need those extras! The book looks awesome, the compass is a cool inclusion, I want that map on my wall so bad, and THE MUSIC. FOUR WHOLE HOURS??? YES PLEASE!!!

Got into both Ys and Trails sometime last year, and have instantly fallen in love with both, hard. Now I recommend them to everyone I know would like them, and the amazing localization work you guys do definitely helps make it easy to do that =D Keep up the good work, I’ve been a fan of you guys for a while, since you’ve also brought over the most recent entries of my favorite RPG series, Wild Arms! Which, if the powers at be ever made a new game in that series (doesn’t seem likely at this point but who knows), I’d hope you all will bring it over too ^_^

Glad to hear you’re excited for the game, even if you can’t play it. I’m sure the CDs won’t let you down. ;)
