Son of Scoregasm Coming to PS Vita

Son of Scoregasm

Hi, I’m Charlie of Charlie’s Games. I’ve been writing and releasing shooty games since 2005, including Irukandji, Bullet Candy, and — most recently — Scoregasm. I’m here to talk about my latest super amazing game Son of Scoregasm, which is coming to PS Vita very soon.

In Son of Scoregasm I’ve tried to create something slick, varied, challenging, and fun that plays really well on Vita. The game is a sequel to Scoregasm, which was released in 2011, and in essence is a refinement of that game, taking the best bits and improving the rest.

Son of Scoregasm is a twin stick shooter, though not in the typical survival style. Instead, the game is comprised of a series of interlinked levels that you progress through in a non-linear style. What this means is that there are multiple paths through the game, ranging from fairly easy routes to some that are pretty hardcore. The levels themselves are designed to be different, and there’s a real variety of enemies, traps, and bosses for you overcome as you explore the game and find all the exits.

In Son of Scoregasm, the pulse attack is a really helpful, close-range pulse that wipes out enemies in a short radius around you ship. Unlike many other twin-sticks, the pulse attack isn’t a panic button. Instead, it’s a core attack that you’ll use to both survive the levels and to score points. For example you could use it to push a huge crusher back towards an enemy, cut through a field of bullets, or change the direction of a huge, rotating arm made of cannons!

For scoring, you’ll need to shoot enemies. Didn’t see that one coming, eh? However, using your pulse attack to kill enemies will turn them into multiplier tokens that increase your multiplier and allow you to score more points per kill. If you’re going for big scores, you’ll need to work out the right balance between pulse attacking for multiplier tokens and shooting for points on any given level.

So that’s a basic overview of what the game is. While this post will give you some understanding of what Son of Scoregasm is and what it looks like, it doesn’t really communicate how it feels to play, so I’ll attempt that now. It feels really, really slick on Vita!
You all know how good things look on Vita’s screen, but it’s the controls that really feel amazing. The analog sticks are perfect for this game, giving you the full 360 degrees of control for quick reactions and increased accuracy. This, coupled with how fluidly everything moves on screen, makes playing the game feel solid and smooth. It’s genuinely great to play.

Son of Scoregasm is in its final stages of development now. At present I’m working on getting Trophies, Leaderboards, and all that cool stuff in place. It’s exciting to think that pretty soon folks will be able to play it!

If you’d like to know more about Son of Scoregasm, you can visit my blog or follow me on Twitter. There’s a cat photo warning for my Twitter page. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

As a final thing, I’d like to say a big thanks to Shahid for liking the original Scoregasm enough to get me set up and working on this without really asking any questions, and also to Ben, who has tirelessly answered all my silly questions. Cheers guys — Son of Scoregasm wouldn’t have happened without you!

Bye!

  • If it’s Robotron-y enough, I might just buy it

  • That looks pretty awesome, it’s odd that there aren’t many twin stick shooters on the Vita given the fact that one of the major improvements over the PSP was, well, twin sticks. Are there any gameplay videos out there to view?

    • If you click on the blog link towards the bottom of the post you’ll find a few there.

      Cheers

  • I’m intrigued. I also find it funny what game on your blog you developed that you don’t mention in this post.

    • Yes, well. It exists, i cannot deny it. It’s very silly, and not terribly safe for work, so I thought i’d best not mention it here ;)

      Cheers

  • I have Scoregasm on Steam and have been aching for a good twin-stick shooter on Vita (sorry, I just don’t get the hype being Super Stardust). I’ll definitely keep my eye on this!

    • If you liked Scoregasm, you’ll like this! It’s much smoother and the gamplay is tighter.

  • This post was not about the price of soul sacrifice delta! Rawr lol!

  • Game looks fun…I saw some gameplays of Scoregasm in your Blog,it has some cool levels and the screen to select levels is pretty nice too….it looks great and right up my alley…I’m buying it.Big thank you for bringing this to Vita.

  • @Charlie Knight

The video sample on your blog is definitely more intriguing than just the screen shots. Looks like some good arcade-style fun. Congratulations on releasing the new game, on the Vita.

  • Awe yeah Ihave been say when will thePS Vita get another shooter and finally that is happening. It’s good to see more great games coming out for the platform!!!!!!!!!

  • My husband was just asking me what a good Resogun-like shooter game he could play on our Vita. Good timing!

    Couple of questions:
    1. is it rendered in Vita native resolution? at 60fps? with some kind of AA?
    2. Who’s doing the music?
    3. Will the music assets be 24-bit FLAC? or at least 320kbps Ogg?

    • answers to your questions:

      1: yes, yes and yes!
2: John Marwin. You can check out his soundtrack to the original Scoregasm here: http://johnmarwin.bandcamp.com/album/scoregasm-soundtrack
3: not sure i can talk about specific file formats for Vita, but we will almost certainly be making the soundtrack available in various formats, including those you mention online around release.

      Hope that helps!

      Cheers

  • Digital only = no sale.

Want my support? Give me a physical release.

  • @10 please think with logic

you expect an indie game that will cost about $10-15 to be released as a physical copy?? you’re really pushing the insanity level. this game is probably gonna be at the most 500 MB. the majority of people wont mind using a fraction of a GB on their memory card for a at the most 20 dollar game. if this game was 2GB, your reasoning would make sense, but in this case it does not.

  • Insta-buy! Awesome, awesome, news. I’ve played most of his games on PC, and they’re dang near perfect dual stick shooters. If you asked me to email three developers to port-beg for vita, he’d be on that list… to hear Shahid already did exactly that warms my heart.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. You have my money. Give us more, please.

  • @11

I don’t support digital releases, and those that actually support consumer rights don’t either.

Digital only releases are objectively bad for consumers, period.

Half of the “indie” developers out there claim to be indie just so they can try and kill the used games market.

Real gamers do not support digital only.

    • You’re entitled to spend your money as you please, it’s yours after all.

While i agree that there are still some issues surrounding digital only products in general (it’s not just games now, is it?), to say a developer would claim to be publisher independent to kill the used games market is a preposterous statement.

  • @13

“Real gamers do not support digital only.”

That is the most misguided comment I’ve read all day. Look at the thousands of games available on Steam. The vast majority of those were never printed and exist digitally only. The digital distribution model has eliminated production, distribution, and sales cost and has lowered the entry for game developers. This game would not exist without digital distribution (you think EA is going to pick up Son of Scoregasm?)

If you only support physical releases, enjoy giving your money to huge blockbuster game developers. EA, Ubisoft, Square Enix, and Capcom appreciate your business.

I prefer to support good games regardless of the size of the developer. Buying Son of Scoregasm might help put food on Charlie’s table. Buying the latest Call of Duty is going to add pennies to some huge balance ledger. Good job with your moral stance…

  • $10 or less or its a no, sorry.
