4 Things You Need to Know About Sherlock Holmes on PS4

Hi PlayStation.Blog! This is Olga from Frogwares, and I get to tell you about our latest game, Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments.

Fictional detectives rarely go gently into the night; devotees of the long-running Sherlock Holmes series never want to feel that “their” character has come to the end. They like to hope that there is a life for them beyond the Canon.

Inspired by classic literature and popular culture, Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments turns back the clock for you to enjoy the continuing exploits of the most famous London-based consulting detective whose abilities border on the fantastic.

Plot-driven crime drama, Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments is a pure investigation whodunit game that features brilliant detection, dreadful villains, and blood-curdling crimes. Six sophisticated cases, numerous suspects, right or wrong charges, possibility to fail or succeed, moral choices to influence the gameplay, and alternative endings — you play Sherlock Holmes at your own peril.

Here are four things you need to know about Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments:

It’s all About the Sherlock Holmes Universe

19th century England, Victoria Regina, Dr. John Watson, Baker Street Irregulars, Inspector Lestrade, and Sherlock’s long-suffering housekeeper Mrs. Hudson… you will be switching characters, and hey, you will even control Toby, the best nose of the British Empire!

It Forces You To Think Logically

Gameplay mechanics are specific to investigations and meant to convey what it feels like to actually BE Sherlock Holmes, the investigator, such as his ability to learn the details of an individual’s life simply by observing them, or to imagine and reconstruct a past event by merely studying the key features of a crime scene.

Each Case Offers You Real Freedom

Collect clues and tie the evidences together making your own deductions, coming to your conclusions. Make your own choices rather than enforcing justice by the book. Incriminate wisely though, as your decisions have an influence in the game.

There Are 9 Endings To a Case

It’s perfectly possible to accuse the innocent and have him or her sentenced to death — it’s XIX century, after all.

The legendary journey continues on PS4 and PS3 this September for everyone who has a lust for crime drama.

  • I could definitely use some more crime drama after L.A. Noire. This project continues to sound intriguing.

  • Looking forward to this one. Any info about pricing?

  • Woah, the graphics look awesome! I love games that make you think, so this seems great!

  • The wife and I are looking foward to this game. Will there be a demo?

  • Man this looks awesome… I’m getting this fo sure!

  • Hopefully they get the camera controls right in this one (X & Y inversion SEPARATED please!), as well as fixing all the ridiculous “deductions” needed near the end of the previous game…became so obtuse as to be unplayable. Let’s hope for a Sherlock game that lives up to the source material.

  • I’m definitely interested to see how this game turns out. The ability to switch between most of the characters (even the dog?!) seems a bit iffy and chaotic to me. Fingers crossed this game ends up being as amazing as we all hope it will be!

  • Shadows look like half/quarter-res, and are super flickery. Looks like there’s *still* no texture streaming, as seen in the spear-throwing scene during the fast pan where the bump maps can’t cover for the low-resolution texture assets. It also looks like there’s still no facial motion capture, so the morphology looks really weird and never quite matches the actor’s voices. Everyone looks like they’ve been injecting botulism into their faces.

I’d love a modern rendering of a Sherlock Holmes game. I really would. This just isn’t it, and after the total lack of post-release support for the Testament of Sherlock Holmes game to fix crashes and framerate issues, I’ll wait for this one to be free on Plus or heavily discounted. Nothing personal against Frogwares, but I don’t think that games of this scope are playing to their strengths. I’d really like for another developer/publisher to have a hand at the next one.

  • MOE-GUNZ-JACKSON

    Interesting

  • Is it an indie?

    No.

So it’s not coming out for he Vita.
