Nova-111 Coming to PS4, PS Vita in 2015

Hey everyone, it’s Rob from Curve here. You know us by now, right? Here’s a reminder: we’ve developed some of the most well-known PlayStation indie titles including The Swapper, Thomas Was Alone, and Lone Survivor. We’re also massive PlayStation fans and we’re all about helping indie developers bring their games to console.

Today I’ve got the honor of announcing a brand new title that we’re developing for PlayStation in 2015. It’s called Nova-111 (pronounced “Nova-one-eleven” if you were curious), and it’s something very special. We fell in love with the game the very first time we played an early preview version, and we think it’s going to be a perfect fit as an accessible but challenging puzzle game on PS4 and PS Vita.

Nova-111 is a sci-fi themed adventure game that cleverly combines turn-based gameplay with real-time action, forcing players to utilize both real-time decisions and turn-based strategy to fight enemies and solve puzzles.

The combination of two very different methods of interacting with the world creates a game that allows for that sense of urgency you get from real-time games while providing the depth of strategy and methodical combat decisions you might typically associate with turn-based titles.

Designed by Funktronic Labs, the game has already been making a name for itself in the indie scene. The guys over at Funktronic are no strangers to PlayStation either — the head of the Studio Eddie Lee also worked on the popular PixelJunk series of games for PS3.

Nova-111 will be a cross buy title and will be heading to PlayStation Store in early 2015. We’re already knee-deep in development of the game, so we’ll have some more information for you, including a shiny new trailer, in the next few months.

  • PSVita TV support?

    • I can’t confirm that 100% yet, but we do intend to fully support PlayStation TV for every title we bring to the Vita.

  • for a second I thought
    Phantasy Star Nova….

Jesus…. Mohamed… Moses… Can anyone hear my prayer?

  • I recently had to send my PS4 in for service and I just got it back yesterday. Going through my library to re-download games and I am seeing way way too many games that shine on Vita but make the un-needed move to PS4. Needless to say, I am saving a ton of room now by not downloading these. Vita only is good for me on this :)

  • It’s like there is a tiny cute claptrap in the first picture.

This sounds super interesting, and if it is half as innovative as the swapper, I’m 100% on board.

  • Just watched the Announcement Trailer (you should include it in your post), and it looks awesome…and looks like it’ll be right at home on the Vita! Thanks so much for continuing to support the Vita. I love TBSs!

  • Not very crazy about this one.

But will check it out more, when there’s more about it.

Just looks too gimicky, and should be on a phone instead.

  • It looks nice. Waiting to see a gameplay :)

  • saying Eddie Lee is involved immediately makes me excited :)

the description mentions “adventure” game — does that mean there’s a strong story and conversation/inventory-based puzzles?

are the art assets being stored s 1080p native so there’s minimal scaling on PS4?

  • So is this kind of like a rogue-like in terms of gameplay? It certainly sounds interesting. If the price is right, I’ll likely be picking it up. I do love me some cross-buy.

  • Well regardless of what people think about the games coming out for the ps vita there are games coming out even if people don’t like them all can’t please you people all the time.

  • Sounds pretty cool!

  • Can we just stop with these 10 dollar games for the PS4. then when PS+ games for the month come around they will have these garbage nintendo throw back games. Ps3 gets real full disc games…so on a PS4 with the engine it has and the power it has let give out free indie games or low budget games.

Im not saying this game isn’t great or any other low budget game but just don’t give these out for the PS+.

  • @thebgj…
Welcome to the realities of modern gaming. The vast majority of titles are going to be $10-$15 games, because the big pubs only want sure bets (like CoD & AC), which leaves a large volume of developers either unemployed, or working for much smaller teams. PS3 only gets full retail games via PS+ because the system had 3-4 (maybe more) years on the market before PS+ was even a “thing”. We’re likely another 6+ months out before we starting getting any retail games via PS+ for PS4, and it’s going to be things like KZSF, Knack, or maybe AC4.
    So basically:
If indies are an issue for you, quit gaming.
If you’re expecting $60 titles for free on PS4, be more patient.

  • Whenever I see descriptors like real-time action and turn-based strategy I always go back to Valkyria Chronicles and X-COM. While this may not look like those if it plays anything like them I will be very interested. I am going to keep an eye on this since I have also enjoyed Curve’s other games.

And Jaded_Dragon is 100% spot-on correct, whether people want to admit it or not. Which reminds me I need to re-up my PS+ sub.
