Shu Coming to PS4, PS3, Vita in 2015

I’m Tom Beardsmore, Creative Director and Co-Founder of Coatsink Software. Co-Founder Paul Crabb and I established Coatsink in late 2009. Early on, our studio developed a few mobile titles including Pinch and Fatty as we continued to expand the size of our team. We’re now a team of 12 developers and in recent years we have pushed forward and began to develop PC/console games. In 2013, we met another indie team called Secret Lunch and decided to help them out on upcoming PlayStation title: Shu!

Shu

Shu was originally conceived by our friends at Secret Lunch. However, in order to make the game a reality and bring it to Playstation platforms, we decided to go into development partnership together. In building the concept, we really liked the idea of a colorful world juxtaposed with a sinister villain; the idea of saving relics of your past and present, and moving through the remnants of earlier civilizations. In gaming, our inspirations are classics like Klonoa and Abe’s Oddysee (to name a few).

Shu is a 2.5D side-scrolling platformer, where the player can harness the unique abilities of a group of unusual and adorable hand-drawn characters. A deadly storm has forced villagers to seek refuge across the land, but many have become trapped. Your journey will take you across savannah and through forests, all the way to the very peak of a desolate mountain.

As you (Shu) climb your way to the top with the storm hot on your heels, you will happen across these stranded villagers. Take them by the hand (or beard) and guide them to safety while harnessing their unique abilities. Keep an eye out for the sinister storm, because if it catches you, it’ll snatch your companions away one at a time. You’ll then lose them and their abilities for good, so it’s wise to stay on your toes. Fortunately, there can be more than one way to survive. Can you outrun the end of the world?

I saw this a few days ago and was worried it was only for EU. Thanks for bringing this to the US! And even more thanks for bringing this to Vita! Vita is my platform (no pun intended) of choice for side-scrolling platformers!

Fer serious, when did whoever writes the blog titles decide that the comma is a replacement for the word “and”? “PS4, PS3 AND Vita in 2015”. Drives me crazy that everyone has begun doing that.

Anywho, I am digging the art style in Shu and hope you (Mr. Beardsmore (excellent name, BTW)) will be back soon with more information and hopefully some videos. Also, Xenomorph.

I love the concept and the art. If the game play is more than 2.5 hrs long then definitely a day 1 purchase for me.
Any info regarding the minimum free space required to install this? Also how many abilities/companions at a time can I have? Looking forward for this hopefully its cross buy or at least cross play.

    We’re not sure what the minimum free space requirement will be yet, simply because we’re still in the midst of development. As for the number of abilities/companions, it depends on what stage of the game you’ve reached. The later you are, the more powers and companions you’ll have acquired!

This reminds me of Rayman which I love. I have a PS4 but will be getting it for the Vita.

@PantheMan16: When writing headlines, article titles, and so forth, there is a specific set of guidelines to follow and standard grammar rules do not apply. This is as much for the sake of clarity as it is for brevity; regardless, this post’s title is a particularly well-written one as far as gaming journalism/blogs tend to go.

For someone who puts up such a fuss about what they perceive is a mistake, it’s kind of funny that you wouldn’t take the time to consider your own perspective as the problem. “Everyone” hasn’t started writing like this recently, it’s been more or less standard in reporting since the mid-1800s. You’d be better off spending a few seconds confirming what you’re criticising instead of spouting off like an imbecile– I’d provide you a link, but this is such a widely-known rule (i.e. commas replacing “and,” semicolon replacing “but,” etc.) that you would be able to find it yourself within seconds of searching.

This game looks like it’s worth keeping in mind. I hope there will be a nice trickle of content to make sure it’s not forgotten in the meantime; mid-2015 is a long way off, even if developers and publishers are prone to revealing their games with even bigger gaps between launch. There have been plenty of other smaller indie titles revealed on this very blog that looked promising, only to disappear from the public eye– and that certainly hurts their product if the hype surrounding it doesn’t sustain itself.

Journalism, which is based on the English language, which uses grammar, much like the word ain’t.
Pretty sure grammar has been around before journalism.

Anyway,
Can’t find a video of this game, other than IGN. Also,unfortunately, my Vita does not use Adobe Flash

Hooray for technological advancement.

Although, if it is anything like what I hope for that cart pulling / family game (can’t think of it now), and brings my kids closer together, it would be a better step in the right direction.

No… it’s pretty obvious I’m not arguing with them. They’re objectively wrong in regards to how a proper headline is written, and I’m pointing out why. It’s simply a standard that has centuries of precedent and is widely adhered to, regardless of your illogical display of rationale. If we’re going to go down that road, then there are ineffable grammar contradictions and semantic exceptions to explore, and that’s really not worth our time.

Looks interesting. Are the “hand drawn” characters animated at 12fps, at least?

You mentioned your game influences — that implies other influences. Are there filmic references you’re drawing from? Seems like immigrant/dust bowl type movies would be an interesting place to get imagery and framing ideas from.

    Thanks! Yep, there’s a lot of filmic influences for the game, from Disney to a variety of manga/anime. Hence the idea of a “colorful world juxtaposed with a sinister villain”.

Looks absolutely stunning – LOVE that Klonoa is an influence and will buy day one.

However, I must ask, is this an endless runner? Please consider making a proper platformer if it is, as no-one wants crappy mobile genres on console.
