La-Mulana EX Out Next Week, The “EX” stands for “Extra”

Hello, fellow explorers! It’s been a while but, finally, I’m happy to say that thanks to our friends at Rising Star Games, the western release of La-Mulana EX on PS Vita is right around the corner and launching on March 3rd! The game is already out in Japan and the response from Japanese fans has been overwhelming, so I hope you’re all looking forward to playing it soon, too.

If you’ve played it before, the idea of diving into La-Mulana once again will be very exciting, especially as PS Vita means you can go exploring whenever and wherever you like. However, other people might not have even heard of La-Mulana — what a tragedy! That’s why I thought I should give a quick introduction to the game, before introducing the improvements and additions that make La-Mulana EX the ultimate version.

What is La-Mulana EX?

I’m glad you asked! La-Mulana is the original Archeological Ruins Exploration Action game, and a throwback to the days when games tested you to your very limit. First created by developer NIGORO in 2005, players use their skills and wits to explore the ruins and discover the ultimate treasure without falling foul of the monsters and traps in their way. It might look like a straightforward, Metroidvania-style platformer, but it’s not just an action game. You’ll also need to solve riddles and keep mental notes to make progress, so it’s much more!

Of course, we’re thinking of La-Mulana EX as the ultimate version of La-Mulana — as the blog title says, the EX stands for Extra. In developing the game, we’ve worked with NIGORO to make some important tweaks that not just tighten up the game’s puzzle logic but also enhance the overall experience. We also added new material that everyone from new players to dedicated archaeologists could enjoy; it was a lot of work, but the results are worth the effort.

What’s New in La-Mulana EX?

For starters, the new Monster Bestiary is where you can check out details of every monster you slay and character you meet. It’s useful to read, but you’ll also get to see some wonderful art for the creatures in the ruins. We were amazed when we saw how much previously unseen art there was for La-Mulana, so this was the perfect way to show it off.

We’ve also tweaked the gameplay. La-Mulana lets you go almost anywhere you like from the start, which can be a bit daunting to some. When we first started developing La-Mulana EX, the plan was to have two modes: the original version for returning players, and a revised adventure that was more accessible for new players. However, as time went on, we decided to bring both versions together in a way that improves the experience for everyone.

Of course, this doesn’t mean we’ve made La-Mulana EX easier. Trust me, it’s still just as challenging as ever — it’s just also more accessible for those who might be too scared to enter the ruins otherwise. The signposting is improved, some of the puzzles and obstacles have been altered slightly (Don’t rely on your memories if you’ve played the game before!), it’s now possible to undo the Hard Mode curse if you want to, and so on. We’ve even added more languages (French and German, on top of English, Spanish and Russian) and improved the old translations, so now even more people can enjoy La-Mulana than ever before.

La Mulana EX on PS Vita

Got Any Tips, Please?

Absolutely! Here are some to get you started:

  • Read every stone tablet you find. The clues to solving the ruin’s puzzles are there for you to unravel!
  • Collect the Shell Horn and listen for it sounding. That means something has changed in the ruins for you to find.
  • If you hit a dead-end or meet an enemy you can’t beat, don’t be afraid to run away and explore somewhere else.
  • I know it’s old-fashioned, but please read the e-manual! Seriously, read it. Especially page 26.

I hope you all enjoy La-Mulana EX when it arrives on PS Vita! And if you have any questions in the meantime, please put them in the comments below and I’ll do my best to answer them. Thank you!

  • Great News!
Does La-Mulana EX support the playstation tv (vita tv)?

    • Hey heubergen1,
Yes, I’ve been told it does support PS TV. If you don’t own a Vita or a PS TV, I guess it’s a great time to get one. ;)

  • Never played it before. Looks like lots of fun. Any info about the pricing? Or PS+ maybe…?

  • Why not on PS4 ? :(

  • I would love to see a PS4 port. Would there be any chance to see the original La-Mulana version on PS? I know there are licensing issues but perhaps the concerned parts could be edited out. I’m also interested in the sequel.

    Thanks.

  • Time to buy another box of tissues ;)

  • PS, why you no reveal PS+ titles for March??

  • @maxcoronel2014 Gonna guess that it’s 14.99, it shouldn’t be more than that, it could be less !

@Alucard-XII Chances are, the sequel won’t come out for consoles for a while, if ever. The kickstarter made it nowhere near what it needed to release on consoles.

  • Hope this is part of PS+ next month. Already spent soooo much in past few weeks and the $15 I get back has to go towards Hotline Miami 2. This game sounds great though so hoping to get to play it sometime soon.

  • >it’s now possible to undo the Hard Mode curse if you want to, and so on

Ugh. Way to ruin the fun )

The only thing about La-Mulana that needed fixing, in my opinion, was the part near the end where you had to go around all the places you’ve already been to – simply to collect keys to endgame. Not some upgrades, which is fun, not visiting a changed version of old levels – witch would also be fun. Just straightforward boring backtracking made to lengthen the game (don’t know why – it was long enough as is) and kill all the enjoyment you had with it.

Now cutting that (or making it possible to get all the keys while going through the game from the start) would made this game near-perfect. But it doesn’t look like this particular thing changed at all.

  • Never played the first, but I am so excited to pick this up!

Question: since you combined the “original” and “revised” modes, does that mean I don’t need to worry about which mode I choose in the beginning? As a total newbie I want the proper La-Mulana experience.

Thanks for bringing this to the Vita!

  • This is great news… the game has been on my Steam Wish List for a while, but I would absolutely rather play this on Vita. Thank you for bringing it here!

    • Right on, thank you so much for the support, langdon! Make sure you report back here with your clear time, or tweet it to @RisingStarGames. Have fun exploring!

  • Hi folks! I’m Martin from Rising Star Games, and I’ll do my best to answer all your questions in the run-up to launch. :D

Clearing things up that have already been asked:

    • Yes, it’s PSTV compatible!
    • Sorry, but it’s only coming to PSVita – no PS4 version in the works.
    • You don’t HAVE to undo the curse, RedPriestRezo! Besides, we only said there’s a way to do it… we haven’t said how. :)
    • There’s only one mode now, OuterSpaceJunky, which melds the same hardcore action of the original game with some better signposting and other accessibility to prevent people running a mile before they’ve even got into the ruins!

    Keep ’em coming!

  • This game looks awesome! A perfect fit on the Vita.

  • Will this have a platinum trophy??

  • This game is pretty much guaranteed to be part of ps+ for march

  • Question, is it available on full screen?

  • Thanks for putting it on the Vita! I did want to play this on my Wii U, but I would have to play it in Wii mode, which doesn’t allow me to control the game with the gamepad. The problem is that my tv is a blurry mess, so I would have to use the gamepad as a display, and use an external controller to play the game with. Playing it on the Vita directly is much more convenient.

  • Yessss, finally. Been waitig for the Vita version. La Mulana is an amazing game and I can’t wait to see it sitting next to Spelunky and 1001 Spikes to make an indie Jones trilogy. Day 1. March will eat my wallet.

  • can players choose a female or dark-skinned character like in Spelunky and other games?

  • More answers!

    – Yes, there’s a Platinum trophy… though whether you’ll get it is another matter entirely. Good luck with that!
    – The game stays in fixed aspect true to the PC original.
    – It’s the story of Lemeza Kosugi’s adventures in the ruins of La-Mulana; you’ll always be Lemeza.

It’s so good to see such a great reaction to the upcoming release… thank you! We know you’re going to love it when it arrives!

  • About time, i was waiting for this since junuary, but it went delayed a lot, this is easily my favorite metroidvania game.

  • @RSGMart: What about graphical options or the original music from the 2005 release? Will that be in? And if not, can that be added later in a future update? Because that would be nice for those that did played the original, before it was on Steam.

  • Can’t wait to beat this game again. MAN it’s great. Will it have a PSPlus Discount for the first week like many other games?

Also, Thanks RSG for bringing this to the vita :)

  • @Mecha_Sonic_75: ‘Fraid not. This is an improved port of the newer PC/Wii version. But, then, if you’ve played that, you’ll know there are still some callbacks to the original game in there… somewhere!

  • My heart goes pitter pat, my wallet weeps. So many games on my vita this month!

    Galak-Z, come soon!

  • This looks REALLY gooood

  • @RSGMart: Well, I do have the PC version. And from the game’s official blog, it gave us some files to add the graphics and music back in as a toggle from the Options/Settings menu. But well, that’s fine. I only asked if you people were to add it in on the Vita port, since I just knew it wouldn’t have the official Mod Support from the PC version (for various obvious reasons, of course).

    Would’ve been nice, though.

  • Is there going to be an easy mode for those of us who aren’t that good at hard games?

  • @Lodi16B: Easy Mode is when you play it without activating Hard Mode – that is to say, no. :P

  • @Lodi16B: the gameplay itself is not that hard, the only thing i recomend to look for from the you beginning is the holy grail check our a speedrun on youtube or a walkthroug to know where is it, is the first thing speedruners get to allow them to quick save and move faster between areas, if you want to figure out the rest of the game by jourself go ahead the game is awesome.

  • @29 and 30 – Thanks, I appreciate the info. This game looks like a fun adventure.

Thank you all for the support and for the great questions too! The game is out now on the North American PS Store! https://store.playstation.com/#!/en-us/games/la-mulana-ex/cid=UP4034-PCSE00567_00-LAMULANAEX000000
Be sure to post your clear times here and/or tweet them to @RisingStarGames. I’ll be keeping an eye on the post for additional questions, and of course, to see them clear times!

  • Looks like a really good game but seriously, $19.99 for a game that barely clears 200 megabytes in size? WAY too overpriced.

When the price point becomes more realistic, I’ll take a look.
