Life with PlayStation is on its way

215 0

I’ve got some good news and some okay news. We’ll start with the okay part. We’re still pushing some paperwork on Life with PlayStation — so hold tight just a bit longer. Now on to the good news, the Life with PlayStation application is looking great and to quench some of the curiosity around what it’s all about, here’s what I can share today.

We’re going to offer this as a free service that will be easily accessible directly from the XMB. Life with PlayStation will feed live content to your PS3 with updates on news and weather on a visually stunning and interactive global map. Imagine being able to wake up to your PS3 to see if you need to pack an umbrella for the day. Or just relax as you listen to your favorite tunes while reading up on top news from around the world.

We’re also very excited to share that Life with PlayStation will be combined with our Folding@home project. What does this mean? While you’re tuned into Life with PlayStation, you’ll also be helping Stanford researchers cure diseases like Alzheimer’s and various types of cancer while Folding@home is running in the background.

We know you’re eager to check it out for yourself, so we’re working hard to get it in your hands. Stay tuned.

… so in other terms, it’s been delayed, with no further time frame or date, niiiiice. I mean honestly, why don’t you just say that in the beginning? You provided us nothing new on LWP other than the fact it’s combined with Folding@HOME which some of us figure anyways.

I hate to sound grumpy, but people that always break promises should never make any. Seriously SCEA, don’t give time frames or dates, just release [insert name here] when it’s ready, than you want have thousands of gamers PM’s on your blog, lol. Or if your positive on a RD, than damn it, work hard to release it in that time frame.

  • Sony fails at release dates, wow Sony come on now, QUIT bringing our hopes up every time, FOR NOTHING, you said the end of July= FALSE, you said the end of August= FALSE, I’m disappointed in you Sony… :(

  • I still find it funny that you guys think that Sony is the only company who delays things.

Anyway, it still sounds like a gimmick to me just to get your news out of a console. I already get my news from my satellite, my daily news paper, and the internet. I’m pretty sure many of you do the same.

I just search what I want to read on the net about and bam, I am there. No need for special software to view my news. However, it is free, Life is free. I just hope it enables us to view what they want when they want and how they want without any fuss.

(Har har, Life is free. What a double entendre.)

  • Wow! Late again? And telling us AFTER the last PSN update for August when we already knew it wouldn’t make it?

You’re right… That *is* “OK” news.

Sorry guys, but not meeting the deadline you proposed AGAIN is what we like to call in the service industry “bad news”. Enough with the marketing fluff.

PS – Whatever the “paperwork” issue is that prevented you from meeting your release date can also not have come as such a surprise at the 11th hour, either. You should have made the announcement earlier that AFTER the last August update. Wouldn’t it be better to have padded the release date and either met it on time, or maybe possibly a bit earlier?

Get n the ball guys. For real.

  • PPS – Who even thought it wouldn’t be free? So your “OK” news was actually “bad” news and your “good” news wasn’t even news at all. I’m looking for the eye-roll emoticon, but can’t find it.

  • at least they have learnt by not saying hold on a bit longer and not september this time.i was a xbox man but turned to ps3 when my 3rd xbox died and im confedent the psn will be far better than live when home and life is added

  • OMG! This was supposed to be out in July and we are still told to wait a little longer? F you guys. What a big ridiculous joke on us Playstation fans. My time with the PS3 has been the worst console experience I’ve ever had, and its mainly do to a lot of hype that never lives up to the promise and rarely delivers on time.

  • “PPS – Who even thought it wouldn’t be free? So your “OK” news was actually “bad” news and your “good” news wasn’t even news at all. I’m looking for the eye-roll emoticon, but can’t find it.” -endekks

couldn’t have said it better myself. All you people who say it doesn’t matter are missing the point. I seriously just don’t know what to make of this. Thanks SCE, at LEAST for broaching the subject. The “news”, however, is absolute crap. Pissed off right now…

  • Nice info thanks! I hated the system that Nintendo used on their Wii (was too cumbersom thanks to not being able to use the classic controller for everything and that it lacked rumble on top of that!)

I hope this means many hours of playing games and other stuff with new features like news reading and the like.

BTW any chance you could get your news from MSNBC? I wan’t to read everything keith says, and the other guys as well they are the only ones who see the world as it is not what Bush makes it out too be!

  • Seems very interesting…I hope to see it soon.

    When can we expect LWPS3?

Would it be coming in a firmware update?

One thing I would like to request..

-The ability to parental lock individual video content.

  • Aww, I was excited until I saw that part about it being tied to Folding@home ONLY because it’ll be an extra thing I need to install and update AND from various sources they say that is the app that makes the PS3 consume the most power.

Will there be a choice at all or you must have Folding@home in the background???

  • First off, please don’t give specific timelines (end of this month)if the product hasn’t “gone gold” and there is a chance of missing the deadline… that’s marketing 101.

Secondly, my 60GB unit is already running out of space… are some of these services and features going to be optional rather than mandatory?
(I’d love to get rid of any space that the advertising or information bar takes up… I never use it, and same will likely go for this service).

  • @stlthriot

Taking a shot in the dark, I would imagine you wouldn’t be required to have Folding@Home running int he background while using LWP. I think there may be some integration with Folding in the way that it is possible to see who is folding around the world. Think of it like the map they already display in Folding but bringing it to the full 3D map in LWP.

    It’s an idea at least.

  • Maybe you could also get people interested in the FAH by adding trophies….that might get a lot of people folding at home.

  • @166:

    Freaking AWESOME idea.

  • this is amazing…yes…no longer will i need to skim through the news paper or watch weather channel

  • thatsmartguywiththefro

Why does anybody think that telling us that it’s been delayed, AFTER the last Store update of the month, matter? Isn’t it coming via a firmware update, like Folding @ Home and all the other new features have?

  • Sounds great

  • @135
Whining about delays? Our frustration is directed mainly at the fact that time frames and sometimes dates are set on things that they themselves (sony) knows will be impossible to achieve. Personally i dont really care about LWP. Does it sound interesting? Yes. Do i need it? no. But the fact remains is that loyal PS followers in a way (by reading the comments) feel lied to, cheated and misled by the constant delays. And with good reason i believe. THEY KNEW AT E3 (sony)IT WILL NEVER MAKE THE “BY THE END OF JULY” DEADLINE! But they chose to make such a statement. And for what?? Just to have something “interesting” to announce? If they couldnt get it done within the entire month of AUG. How in their sane, logical minds did they come up with being able to get it out by the end of JULY..lol. And what pisses me off is maybe next time theyll announce something that i actually care about and ill be let down because SONY is in fact turning the PS3 into the DELAYSTATION3.

  • thanks for the update.

  • Hmmm hope it comes out soon, I have a pretty high score on Folding@Home so this’ll be cool, i’ll actually get to do things while the program works to help Stanford, yay Sony, just don’t delay too much longer, we want Life and Home now lol :)

  • I am very interested in this FREE service that Sony is adding to the XMB.Do you have pictures or video of how this will look? I have not seen anything yet.

  • it’s a good thing…

i was just getting bored with the forecast channel on my wii. ;P

  • @159

i don’t recall them ever saying an August release, they just said it was delayed.

and everyone STFU about Sony and release dates, do you have ANY idea how many things don’t have release dates right now? i mean, ET:QW was 10 years in production, how do you think the people following that felt? and ID even said the release date was when it was done…

  • Maybe I’m missing something, but… Why does anyone need this? I seriously doubt a lot of people even turn their PS3 on for reasons other than to play a game. I thought Sony would have figured it out by now, that GAMES is what’s most important on a gaming console. _GAMES_, not weather, not even movie rental (which, quite frankly, sucks on PSN, since it only supports STEREO sound, and no surround).

Sony is wasting resources and time on all unnecessary things, while continuing neglecting the most important thing. Why isn’t there still a decent service for online gaming? Why pretty much all online games on PS3 lag so badly? Why isn’t there system-wide “mute” option for players? Why sound quality of in-game voice so bad? Why can’t I join a game with someone on my recent players list? There’s a million “why’s”, and no answer. Instead, Sony focuses on irrelevant things – Life, Home et cetera. And as much as I HATE my XBOX-360, I am forced to keep playing games on it more than on PS3, because it doesn’t seem like the PS3 was even designed for gaming – apparently it was just a computer, a super-computer, which was designed for anything except gaming.

  • Cool, cant wait!

  • The PS3 is going to be at the end of its lifespan by the time we get the simple features that they have been promising us since 2006!

3 months left til the end of the year Sony. Is Home going to even make out in 3 months? I’m not holding my breath.

Anybody know when the PS3 is coming out? I think it got delayed again.

  • Over promise and under deliver YEAH SONY!

Well it’s coming sometime in 2008 lol

  • @176 But it does support surround sound. Now if the movies are in surround sound I cannot say but it does support it from video files on the HDD you just have to have either an AAC decoding receiver connected HDMI or just a receiver connected HDMI and your audio set so it doesn’t send AAC and the PS3 will convert it to PCM and send it over so you have your surround sound.

  • I kinda agree with Jackal888 @173 A video of the service would be good. I sort of expect this will be expanded like HOME but I can see how you can add more things within the framework of HOME I’m not clear on where you can go with this. If some mention could be made of future possibilities within the tutorial video if it’s made.

I’m starting to think that there are enough interesting things going that we should have a labs section for Sony either on this blog (The little cave shoot em-up or the PSEye tank game would fit) or some back section of Sony’s site. Nothing on there is promised just a view of what is possible.

  • @176 – I agree fully!

Concentrate on gaming! I don’t really care what the weather is like (I can look out my window), but I hate that I can’t use my bluetooth mic to chat in half my games right now.

Get the basics working and working well… then you can worry about fancy (hopefully optional) add ons!

  • Why do you people act as if Sony is the only company that has ever delayed anything? I can name companies of which have delays of their own as well!

    ALL COMPANIES HAVE DELAYS!

And saying that Sony is wasting their resources on this is just plain ignorance. As long as it’s free…I don’t see what’s the big deal.

And Home is COMING as an open beta soon enough.

Shouldn’t we all remember what happened with that 2.4 update fiasco?

Let Sony take their time. It’s not like we don’t have games or something.

    Damn.

  • @182:

Make certain your headset is Bluetooth 2.0, and you should be fine.

    @176:

What game have you been playing that lags? The only games I’ve been into online are R6V, Warhawk, EoJ, GTA4, and Burnout, and lag has yet to be an issue.

LWP isn’t for you. It’s for people like me. I get up in the morning, PS3 gets turned on. Why? Dunno. Might wanna chat. Might wanna watch a movie. Might wanna listen to music. Might wanna web surf (like right now). Might wanna game. I never know what I’m going to do with it when I turn it on. This is just one more option.

  • @184:

100% agree. I tend to get whined at when I say that, though. Apparenly to some it’ll always be the DelayStation 3. Interestingly enough, if you say the phrase “Xbox 3fixme” around them, they instantly launch into a big speech about how much things have changed and that its a better system now (which is true), but old perceptions are apparently just fine for the PS3.

    Odd, huh?

  • come on sony guys it is the end of august and the end of your deadline release date.
again no life with playstation has been released.
i don’t complain about your releases/ no releases, but this time i would like to see it released on time.

today is not over yet, you still have a little while.
i hope you come through on this date because if not it will make a lot of people very mad.

it has been two months since you announced this would be out, at the end of the month with no prevail.

  • @ 161 you can already lock individual video content and games and also pictures.
also you can enable the browser security so someone has to put in a code to even go online.
the ps3 is all secure you just have to enable all of this.

it is found in network security section.
    hope this helps.

  • @184,

Don’t even bother trying to explain that on the deaf ears of the whine and complainers sect….they’re too busy LOUDLY complaining to hear you…

On side note, think it’s pretty cool they got it grouped in w/ FH-gives us something else to do besides look at same globe and cell screen. I think it’s gonna be nice. ;)

  • Awesome!!! Can’t wait, keep up the good work guys.

  • Damn it Sony, getting tired of hearing from the M$ fanboys about how all you guys do is delay stuff. Personally it’s cool to hear about the free service (and i’m sure it’ll be better than the crap wii and x360 have) but this is a bit disappointing.

  • hey, im actually pretty excited about this. if it works well, anyways, it could be a cool feature. if the weather is off though, that would be a bummer…

anyways, if i could tell sony one thing that i want in future PSP, and PS3 firmware updates…

its an ENQUEUE feature… so that i can look through my songs, and put them in a temporary playlist, so that when i find a song i like on my psp, or ps3, i can enqueue it, rather then having to stop the song i’m already listening to, to hear it.

then, after i enqueue a number of songs, i could save it as a playlist if i wanted to, or just click on another song, and have the whole enqueue disappear. (like winamp).

also, i have noticed that if you have shuffle on, it will only shuffle between the songs in one folder before it moves on to the next folder. this can be a cool feature, but i wish there was the option to shuffle between ALL the songs in the music section instead as well.

  • #157 you are so right. sony should give two free game passes for any ps3 games to all the registerd ps3 users to say “im sorry” for the delays. “paper work” should be finished b/4 you anounce a release date what is so hard about that. “If you’re are early; you’re on time, if you’re on time; you’re late, and if you’re late; you’re left behind” PS3 will get left behind.

  • DELAYSTATION 3
    DELAYSTATION 3
    DELAYSTATION 3
    DELAYSTATION 3
    DELAYSTATION 3
    DELAYSTATION 3

  • now this is some great freakn news… in florida now, were getting a hurricane, it would have great if the ps3 had this already and not wait till my co-worker tell’s their’s a hurricane coming…lol

  • …why not just post up a release date, either way were going to end up waiting.

  • how much holds the ‘little bit longer’? im not whining but i want it as soon as it gets!

  • Come on guys, what’s the hold up with this?

  • Still no update? Is a “little longer” another month or two?
