PlayStation Plus: Your Questions Answered

July 30th Update: The content per month isn’t determined as day one content and is content that will be made available through the month.

PlayStation Nation — First off, thank you for all of your feedback regarding PlayStation Plus. There have been a lot of comments and questions surrounding some of the details of the new subscription service so we wanted to provide a little clarification leading up to its availability on June 29th. It’s a lot of info, but hopefully this helps answer most of your questions.

PlayStation Plus Logo

First off, at launch, PlayStation Plus will offer subscribers the full PlayStation Network game, WipEout HD, PSP minis and PS One Classics such as Fieldrunners, Age of Zombies and Rally Cross, full game trial of inFAMOUS, as well as free monthly episodes of Qore – our high-definition, interactive gaming lifestyle show.

With that, here are the basics of the new subscription service that lives on top of the current PlayStation Network:

  • The current PSN features will remain free. We are still very committed to PSN as a free comprehensive entertainment service and are certainly not planning on reducing this service following the launch of PlayStation Plus.
  • PlayStation Plus is an evolving service and the features included at launch will be:
    • Games
    • PS Store Discounts
    • Exclusive offers on select demos, betas and early purchases
    • Full Game Trial
    • Automatic Downloads
  • (More info on these below)

  • PlayStation Plus can be purchased through PlayStation Store on PS3 as a one-year package or a three-month package. The three-month package is available for $17.99 and the one-year package will be available for $49.99. We will also be offering three additional bonus months for free if you purchase the 1-year package — that’s 15 months total for $49.99.
  • Payment is a one-time fee for either package and can be purchased with any of the current PSN Store payment methods – credit card or PSN Cards.

Here are more details on the features of PlayStation Plus:

Games & Special Offers: As a subscriber, you can expect to get your hands on free monthly PSN games, minis and PS One Classics from the PSN Store. You will be able to download these games during the month they are available until the new selection replaces them.

Once downloaded, the games are yours to keep and play as long as you are a member of PlayStation Plus. If your subscription lapses and then you re-subscribe, the games you have already downloaded will reactivate, so you still have access to them. Additionally, if you delete one of the titles from your PS3, but decide you want to get it back, then you can re-download from the PlayStation Plus section of the PSN Store if the game is still there, or, if the game has expired from the PlayStation Plus section of the PSN Store, you can simply search for it on PS Store and download it again at no extra cost.

Each month there will be dynamic themes, premium avatars and premium game elements/add-ons for you to download and many will be exclusive to PlayStation Plus members only. These are yours to keep forever once you have downloaded them.

PlayStation Plus subscribers will also be given exclusive PlayStation Store discounts each month that are above and beyond the current PSN Store discounts available to everyone. These discounts will range from 20% to 50%, and anything you buy with these is yours to keep and enjoy forever.

Finally, wherever possible we’ll be making sure that members are included in selected demos and beta trials before they go live to everyone else, so you can be the one to tell all your friends about the next big game they ‘must’ get.

Subscribers will get hundreds of dollars of value through the year and, in the first month alone, will receive more than $50 worth of content.

Full Game Trial: Each month we will be offering members the chance to download full games and try them out for a period of time (one hour, unless otherwise stated). After the game trial is complete, simply purchase the game to carry on where you left off. This is a unique way to trial the full game experience and means you don’t have to be restricted to certain levels/game modes when you test out a game.

The games in Full Game Trial will become available to all PS Store users to purchase, but only PlayStation Plus members will have the chance to ‘try before you buy’.

The other great thing about this feature is that you can continue from where you were at the end of the trial period if you decide to buy the game. All game saves and trophies earned during the trial will be unlocked and will show up on your trophy list and your trophy level when you purchase the game. You don’t even have to re-download the game, just purchase and go back to the XMB to access the game.

Automatic Download: Subscribers will be able to set their PS3 to wake up from standby at any time of the day or night, download and install any game updates for the games you have been playing so you don’t have to think about it. Also, select demos and videos will be pushed to your PS3 ready to go. System software updates will also download automatically (manual install still required) and then the PS3 will turn itself off again.

Game updates and demos will also automatically install and the next time you turn on your PS3 you will see a brief on-screen message letting you know what has been downloaded and updated.

Here are some more answers to frequently asked questions from the last blog post:

  • Cross-game voice chat is a feature we know our passionate user base has asked for and we’ll continue to look at as a viable offering for the PlayStation Network.
  • You need to be the master account holder on the PS3 and be over 18 to purchase PlayStation Plus, but other accounts on that PS3 will be able to play the games you download for as long as you are a subscriber.
  • The “free” games you can download each month are yours to keep for as long as you are a subscriber.
  • PlayStation Plus is for PS3 owners as subscribership can only be purchased on the PSN Store. However, some of the content – minis and PS One Classics – available each month will also be playable on your PSP if you have one. Download them on the PS3 and transfer to your PSP, or download directly from the PSP Store or Media Go for PSP.
  • PlayStation Plus is a continually evolving service and we are always working on identifying new partnerships, developing new features and providing new content that our users want. So thanks again for all your comments and questions and please continue to offer more ideas at PlayStation.Blog Share.

  • Want it FIRST day!!

  • Don’t want to wait another 2ND!! lol

  • What if I already own games that I am getting demos of? could I get more PSN games instead or discounts? I mean why would I want a demo of inFamous, LBP or Modnation Racers when I already own them

    • We are planning to offer automatically downloaded and early demos for upcoming titles that you haven’t gotten your hands on yet.

  • at some point along the lines in the future, will there be a cloud save system in place for PS+? i think this would make the service much worth it.

  • When is the firmware update coming?

  • Could we get a list of the first two months of content just like they did on the EU PS Blog?

  • continued from Comment 4:

the reason why i would like to see this is because i have 2 ps3s, one in college and one back at home. usually i take my save games with me via USB, but there are save games that are locked in the system. so its sucks that i cant take em all with me…

  • will there be psn cards at retail like live? No offense but I’d rather be able to get it cheaper than $50.

  • will it be free? ya know so that we can get a taste of it?

  • Please don’t make CGVC a paid feature.

  • Do sub-accounts get access to everything the main account does?

Also, do the sub-accounts also get the Plus member badge on the friends list like the master account does?

    • PlayStation Plus is available to PlayStation Network users 18 years of age or older, and is tied to a single account, whether a master or sub-account.

  • I’m gonna give it a Go!, gonna get the annual subscription .

  • @KUMAR_ROHIT

    read!

    day 1 for me :D

  • hmm interesting. might just sign up now.

  • I think I’m going to sign up. I honestly like the whole concept. The only thing I’m iffy about is the whole “games are yours for as long as you are a subscriber” thingy.

Eh, I’m still not too sure about how I feel with that. But since I will be paying most likely for a year at once. I’ll have all those games for at least a year. So meh, I guess it’s kind of like mine for that time? :/ Sort of like leasing a car I suppose (which I’m against! lol). But nice work on giving the people more services SCE. Looking forward to see what the PSN will offer us next.

  • is that all ps1 and minis or just a select few? because if it’s all ps1 classics i’m getting it day 1, but if not…

  • No. What you are trying to say that Playstation Plus is basically A RENTAL SERVICE, rather than an ACTUAL SUBSCRIPTION… Am I correct on that? Since you are basically A GIVER AND A TAKER. For example, if I get one full game FOR FREE- although, that only imply that I am REQUIRED to continue my rental service, even though despite the fact that I may or may not want to end my service… And that full free game is not mine to keep forever.

So, are you here to rob us away of our money…? So, are premium themes and avatars ours to keep forever, even though if we wanted to end our services with you? Yes or no? Thanx.

How about for those like us who are still on “current” service with Qore? Let say mine will end this November… and will I be require to re-subscribe to Qore? Or I don’t need to do that at all because I am a member of Playstation Plus, therefore, my Qore service will continue until next June or July of 2011, right?

  • What If I’m subscribed and I want to purchase/download something for me to keep forever even I don’t renew my subscription, is that possible? Like I picture something like this when you go to purchase an item: example:”(1)preview, (2)buy now, (3)add to cart, (4)download now(PS+ option to download the full thing for free.)I need to know. I don’t want to download/purchase things during this year and if I don’t renew when it’s done I won’t be able to use the things I downloaded unless I renew again.

    • For the games that you receive at no additional charge, you will keep them as long as you are a subscriber. For Full Game Trial, if you try before you buy, then buy the game, that’s yours to keep, even if you are no longer a subscriber.

  • Getting mine as soon as I can…I think of this as an upgrade to my Qore subscription. I was already paying $24.99 a year for Qore so I am now getting MUCH more for only $50.

  • My brother has a PSP. However, I have the master account on the PSN, and his is a secondary account. If I buy PSN plus, will he be able to play the free Minis games that I would be getting with my plus subscription?

  • Not interested at the current price. You guys have about 8million ideas in the Playstation Blog share and dont include any of them. Also where do you guys get off charging as much as XBL when they have alot more features.

If you want to get more customers listen to the Blog Share ideas. Also why is there no 1 month option. If you guys added a monthly option for like $7-8 then more people would be willing to drop the cash.

    end rant

  • Getting it first day no matter what.It will evolve your experence with PSN and PS3 online. THANK YOU SONY!!!!!

  • Can you subscribe to ps+ without a credit card. Im from the philippines and I can only use PS network cards.

  • Cross game chat. There has to be a legal or technical reason why we don’t have XGC. Once they figure something out we will get it.
“we’ll continue to look at as a viable offering for the PlayStation Network.” So stop whining and just wait. If you need to talk to someone while you are playing a game they have two inventions you might have heard of… A PHONE AND A CELLPHONE!!

  • My brother has a PSP. However, I have the master account on the PSN, and his is a secondary account. If I buy PSN plus, will he be able to play on his PSP (with his account) the free Minis games that I would be getting with my plus subscription?

  • Once again, you guys offer little while the European PS Blog offers a full list of the first two months of content:

    https://blog.eu.playstation.com/2010/06/23/playstation-plus-explained/

Why must the US PS blog always lag so far behind?

  • ooops sorry. just read that part. thanks.

  • @21 who in the ____ would pay 7-8 for one month??

  • Please don’t confuse this question as me not being satisfied because I am and forever grateful. I will be getting PS+ because I already see it worth it but my question is will PS+ be feature heavy?

You have to do something to attract those who are already buying or bought many PSN and PSOne games. For example, the competition offers integrated Netflix, Facebook, LastFM, ESPN; would we be seeing similar features for PS+? If so, why not shed more light on those before release?

I am thankful, as a PS3 and PSPGo owner I will enjoy this even though at times I will run into games I already own.

  • Gonna give it a try!

  • I think I’m going to get this, i’ll probably end up playing way more PSN games this way, and I like the automatic download feature. I was hoping for some more “features” like cross game voice chat or expanded community options at launch, but this is a good start. Just please don’t rest on your laurels, get as many features in there ASAP.

  • I have a question regarding PS1 games. If I subscribe, and get a free PS1 game, and then move it to my PSP, how will it affect the game on my PSP if I don’t renew? I mean, will the game stop working on my PSP as well?

    • Any games you receive at no additional charge via PlayStation Plus will expire at the end of your subscription, regardless if on your PS3 or PSP.

  • “The “free” games you can download each month are yours to keep for as long as you are a subscriber.”

Umm thats not free chuck thats called renting in my friends on the sony blog no sprinkling magic gold dust on that.

  • Will we be given control over which content is automatically downloaded? Or are we forced to automatically download the videos as well as the updates?

  • can i buy it from amazom?

  • What i want to know is will DC Universe subscription be free or get a discount with PSN+

  • cross game chat or bust. this is getting kind of ridiculous, Sony.

  • I’ll sign up for it as soon as Cross Game Chat comes and there’s actual good content, not just shovelware PSN titles and minis that don’t sell well on the PlayStation Network.

  • @17 you pretty much hit it on the head of the nail describing it as a rental service. where it wouldn’t make sense for you to be able to keep content once your subscription is up. Even though on the EU blog, they say that the free game(LBP) will stay playable even if you do decide not to renew your service after it is up.

I wouldn’t say they would be robbing us of money. its not like if i quit paying my Netflix fee, i would be expecting to be able to still be able to view that content.

The Qore question is a very valid question i wonder what they ware going to do for current members(even though i am no longer subscribed to that service).

  • I’m not sure I will buy this subscription, but I think it is a GREAT idea and will definitely allow Sony to give users what they want with Sony’s increased revenue from the subscriptions to their PS+.

But please don’t (coincidentally) stop giving free users what would be originally given. I doubt that will happen, but I just wanna make sure. With that said, when will the next great firmware update be? ;)

  • How is Playstation Plus being handled for those of us who own multiple PS3s?

  • How long will the extra 3 months be offered?

  • PSN Plus looks simply AWESOME! And 49$ for a 1-year subscribe is reaaaaally nice! Can we get a list of the content for the 3 first months please plase!?

  • Yes … as said, I don’t want demos of games pushed to me if I already have the full version installed. Hopefully PSN+ will be smart enough to recognize this.

  • How does this service affect those of us who already subscribe to Qore? If we are only have way through our subscription will there be any compensation if we purchase plus?

    • We realize that some Qore subscribers will also want to subscribe to PlayStation Plus. We are sure that you will find there is a ton of great content, special deals and cool features in PS Plus and recongize that adding Qore is a bonus for Plus users and not the main contraction.

  • This is the second worst idea SCE has come up with. First is SCEA hiring Grace Chen.

  • I love the idea of this Playstation Plus service! Im giving it a go for sure day one!

I have one question… you stated
“premium game elements/add-ons for you to download and many will be exclusive to PlayStation Plus members only.”

Im sure these vary form game to game but they be game changing element? Can you give some examples of it?

By the way… keep up the good work Sony! Playstation 3 has come a long way since it was first released… I remember not being able to acess in game XMB lol.

  • This sounds pretty cool, but I’m not sure if I can play all the free games quick enough with my current backlog of disc-based games. But for the people ready to buy new stuff off PSN every week, this sounds pretty good.

My only concerns are with the PSN+ exclusive themes and avatars, which some people may want to buy even if they aren’t members, and also the exclusive discounts on other games. I really hope non-members will still get sales on PSN games, PSP games, Minis, and bundles. Those sales are when I usually buy games from PSN!

  • Will there be other services in the future that PSN+ will utilize?

For example, if we subscribed, do we get other kinds of access like our saved data being backed up onto a remote server or things like that?

If that’s the case, I’d subscribe right now

    • PlayStation Plus is an evolving service and we will be looing to enhance it as we do with PlayStation Network as well. Hopefully you’ve seen how much PSN has grown in just over three years and we take the same approach with PS Plus.

  • @HatmanTc

EU is getting a free game (LBP). The US is getting 3 months extra for free. Consider them signing bonuses.
