Starhawk: Creating a New Universe and Comic-Con Fun

Harvard Bonin's Avatar Posted by Senior Producer, SCEA

I wanted to take a quick time out from having fun with Starhawk and invite you to check our new behind-the-scenes video below! In it, you’ll gain insight into how we created the Starhawk universe and story, as well as background thoughts on our protagonist Emmett from the team at LightBox. As a special treat, you’ll see snippets of our animated cut scenes as well!

Want more? Check out StarhawkTheGame.com for an extended cut and check out the PlayStation.Blog next week as we release a full cut scene in honor of Comic-Con.

Speaking of….

San Diego Comic-Con is next week and Starhawk will be there for all to play! It’ll be the first time gamers will get to try our single-player mode so come on down and give it a play if you are around. On top of that we’re having a panel discussion at 10:00 a.m., Sunday, July 24th so please come and join us! We’d love to meet you all in person.
Here’s a marketing blurb about the details. Come on by!

Timing: Sunday, July 24 from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. PST
Location: Room 25AB at the San Diego Convention Center

Panel Description

The Evolution from Warhawk to Starhawk — The New Universe that is Starhawk and the Characters Behind the Conflict:

Meet the creative minds behind Starhawk, the spiritual successor to Warhawk, as they introduce you to an exciting new world set in the lawless frontier of space. The team at LightBox Interactive and Sony Computer Entertainment’s Santa Monica Studio are set to bring you an action packed story with compelling characters beginning with hired gunslinger Emmett Graves. Learn about how Emmett must navigate through Starhawk’s brutal playground of large scale combat where the tide of battle turns all the time, whether you’re on land, in the air, or in the far reaches of space. Throughout this discussion you’ll discover details about Emmett’s back story, his affliction to Rift Energy, and his overwhelming distaste for The Outcast, the war band of deadly monstrosities that he must fight to destroy in this PlayStation 3 exclusive. Join Starhawk’s Creative Director—Lars DeVore (LightBox Interactive), Senior Producer—Harvard Bonin (SCEA Santa Monica Studio), Studio Director—John Hight (SCEA Santa Monica Studio), and Starhawk’s Writer—Koen Wooten, as they provide insight into the creative process behind Starhawk’s space western universe with never-before-seen concept art, exclusive story details, and in depth commentary, straight from the men behind this innovative new shooter experience.

Ahem. I — IGN’s Greg Miller — am moderating this SDCC panel. Why was I cut out of the description?! WHY ARE YOU HIDING ME, RUBENSTEIN?!

Haha Greg :) This whole universe reminds me of Firefly and that is AMAZING. The only thing this video was missing was Firefly’s theme song.

We don’t have specifics on the Beta but taking care of Warhawk players is hyper important to us

LOL @3 GameOverGreggy

Back to topic, I was lucky enough to go to E3, and I must say this game was one of my favorites. I like to think of this game as Warhawk on steroids! The game is truly AWESOME!!!

So many questions that I really can’t answer yet! We would love to but we need to work out the details. What kind of things would you like to see in a Collector’s Edition?

I can’t wait for this game to come out. Multiplayer on other games has the lifespan of a month or two but Warhawk has lasted me over 3 years. More of the same please!

By the way, does Starhawk have all the usual aerial pickups like homing missile, lightning, air mines etc or are we stuck with only swarms and machine gun? I understand that you need to balance ground combat against air combat but removing everything except swarms would, in my opinion, be a very poor choice and would take a lot of the fun out of flying which is what made Warhawk so awesome to begin with.

I was ranked 120 (around in the world) till my younger brother took my game and sold it so I never bought it back but I was damn good at this game

This looks pretty sweet. Never played Warhawk, but this is making me very interested to try out when it drops (pun intended). But I think it has to be asked: Was “Firefly/Serenity” one of the inspirations for choosing the sci-fi western theme for the game? If not, what was? (Or will this all be discussed during the Comic-Con panel?)

Oh and where did those animated scenes come from? Are they part of the game’s intro, game cutscenes, a (*fingers crossed*) animated prequel movie, etc.?

Rorek_IronBlood said:

Mmmm. StarHawk!

I seriously hope this is as good as looks. Because, being honest here, but KILLZONE3 was just a huge dissapointment. Guerrilla Games really seem to take four steps backwards from KILLZONE2 (with the exception of smoothing out textures and sharpening their graphics code.) I know a lot of people (myself included) poor hundreds and in most cases thousands of hours into WarHawk since it’s release.

Don’t let us down, Dylan! I think I can say we are “all” counting on your team and yourself to help bring “quality” and “awsomesauce” back to gaming. Just remember “server selecting” is important and like WarHawk will, really help make this game shine.

I just really cannot wait to get my Hawk on (again.)

I still don’t have any idea of how the single campaign plays…I know you guys are working on it right now, but you show the RTS stuff everywhere, I wonder if we’re thrown into that from the very beginning, and I don’t mean that would be “bad”, I’m just curious if there’s more to single player other than playing those strategic battles. Don’t you get to fight inside buildings or anything, or maybe you must go around certain areas driving and flying to accomplish a set of objectives in order to progress? Time battles? Starhawk/Mech duels? Space dogfight stages? And how will you mesh the narrative with it all?

    Harvard Bonin said:

yes, there are a lot of unique missions and all sorts of things to do.

MarinoBrea said:

Another thing? what exactly did the guys from Santa Monica Studio help you with? Did they lend you their GOW3 engine tools or something?

We’ve worked with LBI since the start, in fact, they are old Sony employees from Incognito. We’ve worked with them to set up the business, contributed and approved the core design, lent them God of War art directors, animation leads, engineering assitance, you name it. Its a real partnership.

Gravy, although BSK will be playing and active on Starhawk, expect it to be made up of a core of new players with old bretheren mixed in. Stop by th BSK forums sometime too man! As for Starhawk, I am very unimpressed with the whole story line. Sorry Dylan, you stuck with MP only for Warhawk and personally think you should have done the same for this. Even though I believe it will be well made, the SP storyline is meh… Looking forward to the new MP though! Rock on!

Oh, my gawd! It’s the mustachio kitty! He lives! XD

I really cannot wait to get back into the “not” so, friendly air and reak havok upon the skies. I hope to see everyone new and old coming back. I may have to see if Swifft, and other familiars will be getting back up into the skies too. I’d ask, Hulk, but he’s a tank pilot. XD

mmm looks like this rift energy is some kind of “alien beacon” like in dead space. It mutates you and makes you protect it ¬_¬. Looks like most probably some aliens are in the back story of the game. I like to kill aliens :D

July 15th, 9:28 pm

I love the whole build concept, its so different and has so many possibilities. That is if yah are giving us those many possibilities? But, besides the building, mechs, vehicles, story, what bout customization of your character? Will there be anything perk related? Customization of looks? Weapons? Maybe killstreaks? Not asking for this game to be a CoD clone, but customization is a huge deal for any shooter now. As well as enhancing your character. Those powers of his seem like they can do alot or more.

July 15th, 9:57 pm

Also, how will the other maps look like? The open mars like atmosphere seems cool, and the space thing, but will there be any city like places? Futuristic cities in space? I like city type maps or close quarters. Of course the city would have to be in ruins or have some open areas to drop buildings. Either way, some new maps that isn’t so bland and open are welcome.
