Dragon’s Crown Update: Atlus Assumes Publishing Duties for PS Vita, PS3

Denizens of the Blog of PlayStation,

You know how you’re really excited for something and then something happens and you get even more excited? Like that time you found out they were making a movie for The Hobbit and you were excited…but kinda bummed that Peter Jackson wouldn’t be directing it. But guess what happened: Peter Jackson announced that he *would* in fact direct it, and you got a heck of a lot more excited. Right?

Remember Dragon’s Crown, the next project from Vanillaware announced at last E3, a multiplayer action RPG with beautiful hand-drawn visuals slated to come to PS3 and PS Vita?

Dragon's Crown for PS3 and PS Vita

BREAKING NEWS: Atlus is taking over publishing duties in Japan and North America! What’s more, key (and very talented) members of the Atlus internal development team will be involved with the project as producer(s). You know, some of the people who’ve worked on games in the critically acclaimed Persona series. Yeah, we know: we’re stoked, too!

What does this mean for the game? For one, it means that it’s going to be better than ever. It will, however, come a bit later than originally expected, as it’s now slated for release in 2013.

When we took over the reins, we realized that a lot of the information made available to the public was ambitious and unfounded conjecture. The release timing, the pricing, and many of the features detailed for fans and members of the press were simply unknowable at the time they were disseminated (and frankly we were quite shocked to find out that many of the details were made public unbeknownst to even the developers).

Dragon's Crown for PS3 and PS Vita

It’s still way too early in development to be talking about specifics, but we can say that the game simply cannot retail for $29.99. We don’t know where that price point came from, but it is a logistical impossibility. We’re all gamers and we all wished it could be so, but it would have essentially destroyed any chance for profitability.

There’ll be plenty more news on the game in the coming months, and many questions that you’ll want answered. We promise that we’ll do our very best to answer them!

SUMMARY: Dragon’s Crown is still coming to PS3 and PS Vita, Atlus is bringing it (and helping to produce it), and it’ll hit North America in 2013.

  • Great to know that it is still coming out! Would a buy both versions at a discount of $20-$30 be possible? much like MLB 12 The Show.

  • Excellent news. A VERY wise decision by Atlus, if I may say so.
This further solidifies my perception of Atlus as the go-to publisher for high-quality niche titles most of the competition would never dare try selling.
I would love to support you guys day 1 but alas, I’m but a lowly European…
First P4A and now this. I really wish Atlus could be closer to the Old Continent.

  • Pricing isn’t an issue for me for Vanillaware games. I’ll continue looking forward to this game.

  • i understand it wouldnt be profitable for you guys becuase the contract pick up which make alot of sence.. i think 45-50$ and ps3 version for 60$ should bring in the profitabality you guys are looking for.. we thank you for doing the right thing and being up front with the fans of playstaion. I glad it even coming to the state , ovr seas games are hard to bring over.. I think both of those point make very sence to charge a little more.. which is very honest thing to bring forth..

  • Well along as it comes here to us i’m happy about it.

  • I’d gladly pay 60 bucks for this game. This game looks amazing.

  • Thank you Atlus. You save the day yet again.

  • I’m going to mimick the hopes for a MLB The Show situation. Where you buy both and get a discount. I’ll probably buy both versions anyway, but buying both at launch will be more likely if I can save a bit on it. Probably buy the PSVita version first otherwise, and wait for a lull of releases in anime, music, manga, and games for the PS3 version.

I’m just glad to hear some more about the game and that it’s still coming, and from Atlus is great. Thanks for supporting awesome titles.

  • Can’t wait for this Aram, it’s good news that the game will still make it out (I’ve been very interested in this from first seeing the screenshots).

I would like to know if Atlus also now has the publishing rights for Muramasa: The Demon’s Blade; it was rumored at one point that there was a PS3 HD version coming, and we have heard nothing since. (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/112/1121105p1.html). I would really like to have the opportunity to experience both of these games in HD on PS3 (yes, that’s a hint ;-) ).

  • So no european release -or years late at best so atlus usa can spurs sales with export-
Bad news as far as I’m concerned.

  • coooooooooooooooooooooool
    :)

  • Woo Atlus! I am a bit disappointed to see there is no bundle pack for Vita/PS3 versions. I guess I’ll have to decide which version I want since it will have cross platform. Probably will be Vita.

  • At first I was a little angry at the price change, but frankly I think it’s a much more mature and honest way to go about things than keeping silent and then dropping the bomb at the last minute (Ubisoft, I’m looking at you and Dungeon Hunter: Alliance).

Looking forward to this, though as has been mentioned, it would be great if save games could be transferred and Vita/PS3 owners could pay a bit more for both versions without having to pay twice.

  • I was just looking into this the other day, showing the trailers to a friend. Sucks to hear it’s not coming for another year, but it’s nice to see a confirmation that it is indeed still coming out.
While I never recall seeing a $30 price point, I’m fine with it being $40 for the Vita version (assuming that’s retail).
Also, I wholeheartedly agree with the “MLB 12 The Show” comparison being mentioned here. If you could do a “buy both, save $10 on each of them ($20 total)”, I would definitely buy both. Especially if you were able to put both versions up on the PS Store with a digital discount and the same bundle discount as well. Say, $55 for the PS3 version, $35 for the Vita version, or $70 for both digital versions.
I’m really looking forward to this game, so bring on whatever info you’ve got, whenever you’ve got it. :)

  • ggfdxhgfj

  • Don’t shrink the boob size of the dark mage, pls!

  • Wonderful news.

Dragon’s Crown couldn’t be in better hands.

  • glad to see Atlus continuing to support stateside Playstation consoles… i’d love to be excited about a game like Dragon’s Crown, however, i just do not care for multiplayer games.. period… do some grandiose single player RPGs, and i’ll be stoked….

  • Here is hoping for a downloadable edition of the game that can work on both, but that would kill both Vanilla and Atlus I guess. So here is hoping for a 40 bucks game and 36 on Vita. This game along with Gravity Rush made me rush and buy a Vita, so Bring IT ON!! Dood I so want this!

  • whez ma muramasa ps3 port?

  • Whoa. Does this mean that Grand Knights History will also be delayed until 2013, or will adding Atlus free up some of Vanillaware to complete the localization?

  • Thanks! I hope there’s a discount if we buy both.

  • Thank you Atlas! As a huge fan of your service to us gamers, I’m going to reiterate the “Purchase both editions for a discount” concept. It’s a great incentive to those like myself whom are undecided on which version to buy… cheers & thanks again Atlas!

  • Although the delay is disappointing, knowing that Atlus is now involved makes me much more confident that the game will be ace when it finally does get released.
This is just the kind of game I want to drain my Vita battery with.

  • It appears that Aram has endeavored the rest of the Atlus crew with his good ideas, vast manliness, and dashing good looks.

Also, a good choice in games to be localized.

I got the e-mail about this last night, and instantly thought “You expect me to pre-order this without having seen any video or screenshots?”

But now I know why, Atlus. Now I know why.

  • I thought this was going to get axed so glad Atlus picked it up!!! Now if only Atlus could help out KOF XIII’s online. . . .

  • Personally, I was more excited when Guillermo del Toro was directing The Hobbit.

    But… I get the analogy.

And I love Atlus, and am really looking forward to this game.

    • I think everyone loves them some Guillermo del Toro, but really, isn’t The Hobbit best off in the hands of the man who made the LOTR Trilogy so darn awesome?

      Also: ATLUS loves you.

  • I must say that i’m a little bummed, but since i am going to school for game design.I understand the decision behind this.

  • We’re all in better hands without Ignition helming this. Thanks for being the saviors of Vanillaware, Atlus.

  • GREAT!!!!! ATLUS is the best at this! i own every title bought over here by ATLUS

  • This looks quite fun and I’m glad to see another local co-op game releasing. Will there be a digital release for PSN? More video footage?

  • Aaaaand pre-ordered. Go ATLUS, I’ve been with you since Snowboard Kids! Very excited for next year, when I forget I did this and suddenly get shipping information.

  • Delay by 2013.. sadly TAT

  • Will there be a bundled price/packaging? I would definitely buy both if similarly sold like MLB The Show 12.

  • Make a limited edition with a Sorceress Full Puni figure and I’ll gladly pay whatever you want XD

  • i have to be honest, i knew something was up since we didn’hear from in some time, now atlus being in charge is kind of realixing you know the make great products with great quality, loved the disgaea series and right now is the only game i own for the vita. if the guy from atlus reads this and answers me i just got a couple of questions:

    1) will there be cross platform game?

    2) custom soundtrack maybe?

i know it’s too soon to answer since the launch window was moved all the way to 2013, but they would be nice things, also i wouldn’t mind a collectors edition or preorder bonuses would be nice even costumes lol

  • I’m looking forward o this game. I finally decided to pull the trigger on a Vita, and this will be a must-have purchase.
