Killzone HD on PS3

Announced last week, the Killzone Trilogy box set combines Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 with a high-definition PS3 remaster of the original Killzone. Today we take a closer look at Killzone HD, and the challenging new trophy set that comes with it.

Originally released for PlayStation 2 in 2004, Killzone tells the story of Jan Templar, an ISA Captain whose home planet comes under attack from a Helghast invasion army. Together with a hot-headed sergeant named Rico, a deadly Shadow Marshal known as Luger, and the half-human, half-Helghast spy Hakha, Templar must attempt to reactivate the Orbital Defense Platform and drive the invading forces from his planet Vekta.

This rip-roaring introduction to the Killzone universe has been remastered in HD for inclusion with the Killzone Trilogy bundle. Featuring a single-player campaign with four playable characters and an offline multiplayer mode against AI opponents, Killzone HD has received a thorough audiovisual overhaul: the game boasts 720p graphics at a steady 30fps, with MSAA filtering, sharper textures and higher quality sound effects. But don’t take our word for it – check out these crisp HD screenshots:

  • meh…i played the original on ps2 and found it incredibly boring. i’ll pass.

  • Awesome news sony. I loved this game so much. I think that im still better off getting the Killzone collection. So imma stick with that. Great news in any case.

  • let me guess: no PS Move support for Kilzone HD …

    • Correct. We have adapted and tweaked the DualShock controls so they’re more in line with recent Killzone titles, however.

  • so what if it doesn’t have gimmick support?

  • How so have the Dualshock controls been tweaked?

    • Sensitivity, deadzone etc. on DualShock3 all differ quite a bit from the old PlayStation controllers, so we’ve adapted them accordingly. In addition, the button layout is now more in line with what you’d expect from recent Killzone titles.

  • Will Killzone HD be available as a standalone game you can download off PSN?

As it stand I’ve got 2 copies of KZ3 as Fry’s Electronics was practically trying to get rid of both Socom 4 and KZ3 by bundling it with new PS3’s.

  • its about damn time this game got an update …. any chance we’ll have new weapons (i know that may be far fetched) …. a gamer can dream

  • Any chance to be compatible with remote play on Vita?

And about the other Killzones? Any possibility? I’m married, remote play is the heaven for me.

  • Will the Killzone HD part of the bundle be on disc or will it be a voucher to download off the PSN?

  • Thanks for letting us know we can download Killzone HD off PSN without having to buy the collection. And at a great price too, thanks. Cant wait for more news on Killzone Mercenary’s for PS Vita.

To anyone who hasn’t played any Killzone games, I highly recommend the Killzone Trilogy Collection, great games.

  • I’m glad to hear it! Part of the reason I chose the Resistance franchise (other than for its alternate history) was because I never played the first Killzone. With the Killzone trilogy, I can play from the beginning.

Nevermind some of the cynical comments above which are typical these days. Be happy with what you have people, and not unhappy about what you don’t have.

  • Has the sniper rifle been changed, or the controls for the sniper rifles zoom been changed or improved?

  • Everything about this seems pretty spot-on. I’m amazed at how quickly this HD remaster was turned around, too. May we ask who handled the port?

  • What is the new button configuration/configurations?

Can we expect to see L1 used to aim, or has the game not been altered to that extent?

  • Awesome!! I really can’t wait! I loved the original Killzone. I got the Platinum Trophies for Killzone 2 & 3 can’t wait to get this one as well!

  • The sniper rifle is still the same, as is the way it works. The overall controls have been changed to be more in line with recent Killzone titles, however.

  • Can’t wait!!! Sofa King excited!!! Thank you for listening to what gamers want, unlike some others in the industry.

  • I already have the KZ2 and KZ3 game discs, but I do find the KZ HD trilogy interesting. How many game discs going to be included the KZ HD trilogy? I never tried KZ1 for ps2 yet before, but I’m willing to try the KZ1 game for PS3 on blu-ray disc.

  • This game is so deserving of the HD remake treatment I am so happy it finally got it!
This looks amazing I can’t wait to replay it in HD!

  • Finally. I’m glad to know that Killzone HD is gonna come out real soon. I’ve been waiting, if ever you guys are going to actually release it and well, there we go.

  • Kind of disappointed it doesn’t support stereoscopic 3D… :/

  • So F*** Awesome news!!! thats my fave Killzone ever!!! and the best one, God i miss KZ1 :D thats a definite buy for me Hakka was my fave character and Templar.

  • SUCH AWESOME NEWS!!! I own Killzone 2 and 3 still waiting to play them, and always felt bad about missing out on 1. Now I can start at the beginning! Woohoo!

  • Wait… you couldn’t do 60FPS at 720p on an old PS2 remaster? Why? I’m buying it anyway, but come on!

My god, is Wipeout HD the only game on the PS3 that can do 1080p at 60FPS? (not to mention in stunning 3D)

How is it that Wipeout HD can do it and yet every other PS3 game (even remasters) seem locked at 720p and 30FPS?!

And yet Sony laid off the exact staff that was able to pull off this astounding feat on the PS3?

    DOES NOT COMPUTE!

  • Im excited cause Killzone is my favorite PS Exclusive. It also comes out on my B-Day Oct.23! I already have Killzone(ps2 disc), Killzone 2(disc), and Killzone 3( 2 copies, and digital version), all the themes, most of the Avatars, and posters. Im getting this collection for my B-Day, and also bought a PS Vita for Killzone. Hope Killzone 4 launches for PS4. Could you guys go back to Killzone 2 style for KZ4 because that game was perfect.

  • I never played the original Killzone. Will the HD version have splitscreen or online options at all?

Also, AWESOME on the Platinum Trophy inclusion. :)

  • Wow what a great day this is! Almost have the Uncharted Golden Abyss Platinum and I found out Killzone HD can be purchased off the PSN as a stand alone for only $14.99!!!! I never had a chance to play KZ1 on the PS2. So this is fantastic news as I already own KZ2 and KZ3. Those pics look amazing to, well done! Thank you Sony!!

  • you guys have no plans to support remote play for any of the Killzone titles? this is one of the things i dont like bout you sony don’t advertise things that you don’t plan to release, if you guys dont have any plans to support remote play then why was Killzone 3 used to advertise the feature back at NGP unveiled press conference? i’m still waiting for the trophy support that was supposed to be included in playstation home too.

  • Wow the screenshot above of KILLZONE looks amazing. Is there any chance of KZ or KZ2 being patched for Move support.

    PSMove+KZ3 > Dualshock 3+KZ3

  • First and foremost, I have to say I am INCREDIBLY excited for this HD remake. I never played the first Killzone, but I absolutely loved 2 and 3. Thank you for making this happen, as I have been dreaming of it one day being released on PS3 with a nice HD sheen for years. So psyched!

(Continued in next post, was too long for one.)

  • Victor, with that said though, I do have to bring something up…you responded above saying that there are no plans for any Killzone titles to support remote play. I find it ludicrous that Sony pumped up anticipation for the Vita by actually showing Killzone 3 being played on it, and saying that it will be able to play PS3 games( all while the KZ3 gameplay was shown being played on the Vita) via Remote Play. While I realize that this is more a deceptive move on Sony’s part, I really can’t understand why Guerrilla Games, who are one of the brightest and creative devs in the biz, would allow KZ3 footage to be shown as an example of remote play, at a convention none the less. If there were no plans to support Remote Play with the Killzone franchise, couldn’t your team have been honest with us from the get go? I feel cheated, in a way. Not only does my Vita not have working Remote Play, but the ONE PS3 game I was psyched to play on it (because it WAS ADVERTISED) I will not be able to play anymore…..sigh….I love my Vita, and support PS3, but this is a bummer. Any response would be appreciated and will go a long way in preserving integrity, at least in my eyes. I am sure I am not the only one disappointed about this.

  • Hakha Lives!

  • does this have an option for 3rd person view ? if not then noo can do.

  • Pain, why would they suddenly add third person view? It’s never been an option in Killzone 1, 2, or 3 and would be a bit of a massive undertaking- it’d require a new game, basically.

  • I love Killzone 2 and 3, so i definitely want the first one. Too bad it’s download only. Oh, well.

  • and it is a FPS (First Person Shooter), so no reason to.

But I’m disappointed not to see 3D added to at least KillZone HD like every good HD remasterisation.
Will keep my official PS2 version and keep playing it on PC (all PS2 HD version so far were uglier than PC emulation so I doubt it is likely to change now).

And without move support for neither KZ HD nor KZ2, it will be definitely without me (I need to sell my Sharp Shooter … it only eat dust for a several month now).

  • this will be mine. played the original on ps2, rebought it before killzone 2 came out to replay on my ps3, but never got around to it. sitting on the shelf collecting dust.

    trophy list looks fun

  • never played any killzone, but picking up the trilogy at the local store, seems like a great value

  • although $15 seems like a lot. maybe ps+ discount ???

i’ll wait a bit instead of day 1 purchase

  • First Off: THANK YOU For Making Killzone HD A Digital Download and fixing those broken controls. Second, how many GB’s is the first game? Playstation Plus Discount/Free? Any kind of tie in with Killzone: Mercenaries?

  • Will the Killzone Trilogy have any compatibility with Killzone: Mercenary on VITA? Also are there any plans for re-releasing Killzone: Liberation?

  • @40 why does it matter how big it is? are you running out of space or something?
upgrade your HDD, it’s easy and cheap. i did both of my ps3s years ago to 500 GBs, for $100. i’m sure it’s cheaper now or larger sizes.

  • @42 Relax, just a simple question. I have a big enough HDD in the console, i just want to know the file size.

  • @ 24 ElektroDragon

You are expecting too much, due to not knowing that Wipeout HD is actually little more than a glorified HD PSP remaster, – a port of Wipeout Pure & Pulse with some extras.

No PS2 HD remake does 1080p @ 60fps because the very best PS2 games when up-sized for PS2 are still pretty challenging for PS3, technically, even by toady’s standards.

If you were taking notes you’d see that the only games that ever do true Full HD @ 60fps on PS3 are simple PSP ports (GoW Origins collection, Wipeout HD) or even more basic PSN-only & retro games.

  • @43 then why does it matter? you are asking a question for no reason.

  • @45 For downloading time, i do work and have a life outside of PS3. Mind your own business

  • @46

    just FYI,
you can set something to download (overnight or whenever), have it install automatically and then shut down.

  • @46 I already KNOW that.

  • just trying to help. i have a life too (wife, house, FT job)..not sure why any of that matters though or why you brought it up.

  • so then it doesnt matter how long it takes. hah.
    thats all i’m saying
    have a good day.
