PS3 System Software Update (v4.30)

Next Tuesday, October 23rd, we will be releasing a new system software update for PlayStation 3 (version 4.30). With this update we have made several changes to how Trophies are displayed on your PlayStation 3. The Trophy Collection will now reside under PlayStation Network on the XMB. Trophies that you have earned playing PlayStation Vita games are now displayed on your PlayStation 3. You will also be able to see your Trophy level and progress towards the next level while viewing your trophy collection.

PS Vita Trophies on PS3

By the beginning of November 2012, we will retire the services available through the Life with PlayStation application. In conjunction with its retirement, we will stop offering the Life with PlayStation application to new users with the 4.30 update. This includes the conclusion of our participation with Stanford University’s Folding@home, a distributed computing project aimed at understanding protein folding, misfolding and studying the causes of a variety of diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s as well as various cancers.

We’d like to thank the more than 15 million users that have participated in the program since it started on PS3 in 2007. PS3 users have donated in total more than 100 million computation hours to the Folding@home project to date, and as a result, contributing greatly to Stanford University’s Alzheimer ’s disease research. Considering the contribution PS3 has made to the project, we decided to retire it as a result of discussions with Stanford University.
Vijay Pande, Folding@home research lead at Stanford University, had this to say about your contributions:

“The PS3 system was a game changer for Folding@home, as it opened the door for new methods and new processors, eventually also leading to the use of GPUs. We have had numerous successes in recent years. Specifically, in a paper just published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, we report on tests of predictions from earlier Folding@home simulations, and how these predictions have led to a new strategy to fight Alzheimer’s disease. The next steps, now underway at Stanford, are to take this lead compound and help push it towards a viable drug. It’s too early to report on our preliminary results there, but I’m very excited that the directions set out in this paper do appear to be bearing fruit in terms of a viable drug (not just a drug candidate).”

Please note, the games shown in the picture above are examples, and do not represent existing PS3 or PS Vita games.

  • hey Eric Lempel, Pass on another GREAT JOB to the boys at the water cooler for giving us yet more wonderful forced firmware which only serves to remove another feature people actually use adding a very minor feature few people will notice. Perhaps you can answer this question, the first in your life if you did: When are you gonna realize PS3 firmware should be of benefit to PS3 users? UGH, the stupidity of this companies groupthink decision making is astounding. None of us should really be shocked at this point though.

Note to the rest of the real gamers: If someone involved in SCEA actually managed to push out a firmware patch that actually managed to do ANYTHING USEFUL I’d be all for it. But this hasn’t happened.

  • Dear Sony,

I love the Folding @ Home Application. I hate to see it go and want to encourage you to keep it.

Not only is it a great stand by app, but it helps save and improve lives. Yes, it has already contributed a lot, But it can give so much more. When it comes to medical science, it is the long term goal that is not in sight that counts including keeping programs like this going. That is something the Game community can understand.

Maybe add it as a Plus app? That way there is server support.

Thank you for continued support of the PS platform in all forms,
    DarkingVladd.

  • DarklingVladd,

You’re far from alone in that as you’ve probably seen. Ideally they’d re-release it as a standalone app if someone inside the company made the smart move. Unfortunately as evidenced by the lack of any reply at all they’re really not paying attention.

  • I’m a PlayStation fan. Everybody is asking for new UI ( user interface ) for the PS3 and Sony don’t want to listen. Why?

  • I’d like protest the removal of Folding@Home in the upcoming patch and/or a press release explaning why Sony has decided to end its partnership with Standford. I’m not stasified with the answers some people have given like “Well it is Sony.” While Folding@Home gives no obvious advantage to the owner of the console or Sony itself, the application has the pontential to help millions of people.

Speaking as a person whose has had family that has suffered from several of the medical disorders and diseases that Folding@Home has the potential of curing, if not helping understanding of them, I ask what possible reason, be it technical, social, or ecnomical, Sony has for removing a popular portal to the Folding@Home project?

If the Life with Playstation must be removed with or without reason, then I also request a further update that restores Folding@Home as its own stand alone application.

I’ve started a thread over on the boards if people would like to discuss this matter and possibly (if unlikely) bring it to Sony’s attention.

  • they probably decided to get rid of Life w PlayStation because they had limited space and/or memory, and this was the only way to make the changes to the trophy system!

I do belief that if, you’re logged in on the Vita, you show up at the bottom of the friends list on the PS3.

  • WOW! COOL! & FINALLY! Now this is what I call AWESOME! This will be worth it!

  • Well, I figured people would whine about folding@home. Some comments seem like they’ll really miss it will it’s gone, while most just seem like forced anger. Just another day on the blog I guess.

  • @151

If it’s such a minor “feature” to you, why are you whining?

Seriously, it’s not a big deal. Stanford isn’t complaining.

If you want to continue helping, just run their PC client. Heck, current PC processors are probably faster than the Cell now at most of the computations.

I swear you people are just complaining for the sake of complaining. Don’t you have better things to do in your life?

  • Why isn’t the NEW PS STORE built into the XMB????? It takes like a minute just to get into the store because it’s an external app. And why does it take like 5 clicks just to download something from the store. Those issues really need to be fixed

  • Deleting trophies is just stupid, if you guys don’t like your trophy collection create a new account and problem solved. Its good to know the trophy rarities of the games, if people start deleting them we are not going to know which are the hardest and easiest trophies to obtain.

  • you should remove the dlc trophies that we didnt bought because it decreases the percentage% per example LA Noire does 10% but with 12 trophies and when i enter and press ”SQUARE” it shows 17%

  • I had no clue that folding@home was something that helped people with Alzheimer’s. Would it be possible to release a standalone application in the near future? Sad to see life go, i really enjoyed it.

  • well im happy a firm ware is coming that helps vita nd the ps3 sytem. Foldinghome was good but im also glad it off the console becuase they have alot website to keep those things running . Alot good work con still be directly with them thruough the website of them, which is think is a great thing.

Now for the challenge . Let get “in game video chat” for all games or50% of the sony exclusive games title in 1yr times if not sooner. It highly do-able mr lampel are you & the sony network crew up to it. Its also siadyou cannot deny a direct challenge from the ps gamers without proper reasoning. So lets the games begin, we look forward to see the benifits of your labor :)

  • I agree with #15. Being able to remove or at least hide trophy sets would be a nice feature. Being able to select multiple messages for deletion would be nice to have.

  • @WHITE_PR, due to the limited RAM (and/or) resources (Coughs!! Budget) on the PS3 they most likely decided to devote a new (UI/user interface) to the PS4, Errr…I mean PS Orbis! Watch the evolution of the PSVita (User Interface) for a clue on the (PS Orbis/PS4) UI… akin to the (PSP/PS3).

  • What?! A bit of nowhere-near-extensive-enough trophy maintenance in exchange for Life with PlayStation (inc. Folding@home)? Nowe!

Yeah, F@h is still available on personal computers (if anyone’s “looking for group”, Katawa Shoujo’s team ID is 167809), but Life with PlayStation is a neat little app otherwise.

At the least, provide it as a Store purchase, if you’re insistent on removing it from the XMB proper.

  • As for the trophies… You still have a long way to go. Syncing takes forever, and if you’re syncing to a new profile, it can take a dozen (maybe more) tries to get everything over. Between that (which I agree, there should be a way to sync individual games’) and not being able to remove 0% entries, it’s far from fully functional. (Any whiners over an adjusted 100% regarding DLC, anything that would require looking at more than a dozen total has a platinum as proof, anyway.)

And why would you move it from the Games area? There’s a “view trophies list” option in the Profile view, anyway, and nothing besides games grant trophies. Speaking of the Games section, when can we sort by title, dammit? You’ll provide that for your lauded trophies, but not for the content proper? What could also be useful is a means to determine which DLC have been downloaded.

  • Nice. This is a good step towards getting the PS3 and Vita better integrated together. Any chance we’ll be able to see the status of players on Vita from PS3s?

  • I knew I’d have to lay down some rabid fanboy and its Frege’s turn. So Frege as you obviously haven’t realized yet I’m a big fan of FACTS and heres a few for you. I didn’t call Life with Playstation a minor feature, you did that on your own. Factoid #2, its more than just folding@home, if you’d actually bothered looking at it before you ran your mouth you’d know this. Not to put too fine a point on it but nobody is supporting your idiotic support of its elimination. Yeah thats right your alone in this. Reality is no real PS3 owners support the ever increasing removal of features and restrictions these downgrades represent. “Playstation: it only does …..umm…. does it still do something?” does not inspire confidence.

  • Please keep a possible life changeing app like F@H. Seeing as the psn side of it hasn’t been updated since it was released I don’t mind that beeing removed. The app itself needs to stay as an optional download like any other app.

  • Trophy update had been a long time coming, nice!

No more Folding@Home though? Was this an issue with system wear? Seems like if the PS3 community has contributed so much, why stop now?

  • If we are getting rid of old pointless apps can you give us the option to remove ps home logo from my ps3.

  • Travel the Solar System seems like a really interesting app. For the astronomy lovers out there it would be nice to see some interactive astronomy software for the PS Vita, something like 3d interactive star maps or even a 3d realtime exploration experience of the universe similar to the starry night programs. The Vita being a very powerful handheld device could definitely benefit from such software. is there a chance we might see stuff like this in the future?

  • RIP Folding@home.

    Ideas…

    SORT trophy list by % – From 100% to 0% and 0% to 100%

Hide ICONS like PSN store bags and folders.

Minimize xmb clutter during active gaming.

Option to turn off game “Icon” music. Some game icons are way too loud when scrolling thru the game files themselves. Super Puzzle Fighter, Double Dragon Neon & Shift 2 all have rediculously loud icons.

  • I like the update regarding our trophies coming soon…

With that said, I will miss Life With PlayStation. I always enjoyed catching up on the news provided. But mostly I will miss Folding@Home. For years, this has been a major part of my PSN experience – along with gaming and PlayStation Home.

I am very familiar with Alzheimer’s Disease as I used to work in a nursing facility where most of my patient’s suffered it. I used the program everyday. I set it up where it would kick in if I left the console untouched for 20 minutes. I turned it on every Friday before leaving for work.

I hope that this decision to remove Folding@Home will be reversed. I always liked being able to contribute my hours of it’s use to the study and development of cures for diseases. Please, Stanford and PSN, reconsider the decision to end your relationship together.

Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this magnificent project for all of these years. I am very sorry to see it go…

  • Does that mean we have to be sign-in to see our trophy collection? Or does it mean we can still see are trophy’s under Trophy Collection only for PS3 but we have to be sign-in to see our PS Vita trophy’s?

Can you please answer this ASAP so we can get better understanding of it. Alot of people i know are thinking you have to be always sign-in to see them and alot of PS3 Users/owners don’t have internet connection to do this and it would maybe lead to problems if some PS3 user/owner don’t have internet connection or good one at all.

  • Hmmm…
If you really want to improve something on the PS3 I can think of a lot of easy fixes and they would probably save precious firmware real estate as well. Here’s just 3:

    1. L E T U S A L P H A B E T I Z E O U R G A M E S O N T H E X M B ! ! !
Seriously, some of us have hundreds of games and even with specified folders for genre’s, etc.. it’s a pain to find an older game…. such as, well PAIN. This just seems like common sense to me, but perhaps alphabetizing things is not big in Japan or something. I don’t honestly know a reason why they would leave this feature MIA.

    2. A D D A W I S H L I S T TO T H E P S N S T O R E ! ! !
This would only increase sales for you. I am sure of it. There are so many times I see a game I want to buy, but either there are too many games to buy for the week or I am already playing something else and don’t want to start something new….. just yet. But without a Wish List I often forget about the games I wanted and it’s a lost sale for you. Let’s help each other here!

  • Sorry, ran out of room…

    3. L E T U S M A N A G E O U R T R O P H Y L I S T
As many people have already said on here. We don’t like seeing 0% trophies. It’s a waste of space to scroll through and we are smart players (most of us). We know what it means to permanently delete something.
I personally don’t even touch the 60 minute demos anymore because it creates a trophy list for games, in some cases, that I never plan on playing again.

-A dedicated PlayStation fan (Since 1995)

  • I’m sad to read life with playstation is coming to a end, I like the whole concept since i can’t donate thousands of dollars but through life with playstation i’m helping society. I hope that somehow they could reconsider this was the best idea Ps3 had.

  • I need to delete games with 0% trophies, , be possible ?

  • Why I can’t log in the psn to play online? it has been like this for three days this is not good on my day off work i can’t play BF3 :,(

  • When they add adobe flash player 11.4 support? That’s the biggest thing that PS3 software needs to update! Would be really good to listen radio stations trough internet, because old flash 9 is out of date soo long time ago! Or just update internet browser at least! Gonna be the best software update for PS3 then! Please SONY DO!! I BELIEVE IN YOU!!!

  • how do you get that travel the solar system game? this isn’t the first time I’ve seen it, what gives?

  • Vita trophies! a ’bout Time, Thanks Sony

  • long as my trophies are safe im happy

  • Never EVER used folding@home so that is good news for me but bad for the people who used it, maybe SONY could have kepted it but added a delete option to delete the whole app from the xmb for those of us who considered it a clutter on our xmb. Now if Sony could read all these comments and figure out what we really want that would be really cool. Can you please let me delete netflix and amazon app off my xmb? add delete for trophies i will never complete and delete demos off my download list so i don’t have 931 items on the list with half games i bought and half demos i downloaded. And yea let me delete ps home which is a waste of time and add cross game chat instead. FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIFE SONY PLEASE LISTEN TO WHAT WE WANT.

  • Oh yea it say’s next tuesday the 23rd but this is posted on the 21st, so do you mean this tuesday or will you change it to mean the 30th?

  • Definitely want to know why folding@home is being removed. I have 2 PS3’s running 24/7 to try to support the cause. Is Sony against doing something helpful with the PS3?

  • any chance throphies are giving an use ? i love tçcollecting thropies but they seem to be just nothing :P maybe somethingh liek every 100 bronze or 50 silver, etc u get 1 dollar for the store or something :)

  • Folding@home on PS3 should have had trophies for milestones you reach in the app. Then more people would’ve cared about it. Notice how in the comments more people care about their precious trophies than the removal of an app that can help cure diseases. What a backwards world we live in.

  • XMB alphabetical games sorting for christ!

  • @Heatseeker125

    peoples hack trophies…

  • oups i mean @solidusnake877

    sorry Heatseeker125, btw you’r right.

  • I know this might not be the entirely right forum, but since the trophy pop-up notification gets a sound to alert us we’ve received a trophy, why not let other pop-up notifications (such as receiving messages/friends signing, or off) get a alerting chime? Maybe a different sound for different notifications.

  • This update is a be conflicting..
You are saying the Folding@Home activity has been so positive that you must shut it down?

    Doesn’t compute!

I’m guessing they ran out of room in the original PS3 firmware RAM and are trading the ground breaking research for a chance to view Vita trophies on your PS3? Really?

  • probably bc they already having all data to cure now Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s as well as various cancers.
But now they had to destroy all evidences so peoples continue dying from thoses diseases.
cuz thats what make pharmax empire always richer and testing new experimental treatment that actually will never cure you and make you spen all your life money.

  • off topic a little. when will the broken youtube app get an update?

  • This update is trash nothing new
