How to Upgrade Select PS3 Games to Their PS4 Versions

Update: Watch_Dogs has a new release date in 2014. Due to this scheduling change, it will not be included in the upgrade program at this time.

As announced during PlayStation’s Gamescom press conference, there will be a simple way to upgrade to the PS4 digital version of four select games, for a low discounted price, when you buy the PS3 version of those games. Here are the full specifics so you’re set for November 15th — click here for full step-by-step instructions.

Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, and Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition are the supported titles for this program. When you buy the Blu-ray Disc or digital version of these select PS3 games, for a limited time, you will receive an entitlement to download a PS4 digital copy of the same game from PlayStation Store when it becomes available, at the discounted price of $9.99.

Gamers who purchase a PS3 Blu-ray Disc of these four games will find a code packed into the PS3 version that they can redeem on PlayStation Store. To play the PS4 version of the game when it becomes available, you’ll need to insert the original PS3 disc in your PS4 to activate and play the PS4 version, so hang onto that PS3 disc!

Gamers who purchase the digital version of any of these four games will not need to redeem a code to receive their PS4 versions. When your PS4 arrives, just look for the PS4 version of the game on PlayStation Store – it will appear on PlayStation Store on your PS4 for the discounted price of $9.99. Just purchase it and start playing!

For those of you who purchase the PS3 disc version of the games, you do not need a PS4 system to redeem your code, so feel free to redeem it as soon as you pick up your PS3 copy — you can download your digital copy later when your PS4 arrives.

But don’t wait: This program lasts for a limited time. You’ll need to redeem your code and make the purchase before January 31st, 2014 (for Assassin’s Creed IV and Watch_Dogs), March 28th (for Battlefield 4), or March 31st (for Call of Duty: Ghosts) in order to participate.

  • Nice! Will these only be playable on PS4 by the username that unlocked them or any username setup on that particular system? Or maybe only by that Master account and all its Sub accounts? Etc…

  • This basically means the ps4 is backwards compatible, they just can’t afford to let you use your old games. They just charge you as much extra as they can

  • @49 the time limit is for when you need to redeem the code by.
redeem ps3 code for ps4 game the day u get the ps3 disc.

eventually get a ps4, download the digital version and as long as you still have the ps3 disc, you can play the ps4 version with the ps3 disc in the ps4.

  • so ……pay $70 or be patient for a couple of weeks and pay $60 ….hmmm ill wait

  • common Blizzard

  • oh si baby!!!!!

  • @51 – dragonmanN_K.

The PS4 supports bluray, so a PS3 bluray disc will fit the PS4.

However, the the PS3 and PS4 have different architecture and the devs would have to make their code compatible to each system, so that’s the difference and the price they’re charging. (remember how the devs kept saying PS4 is so much easier to develop for than the PS3 had been ?)

I read today that Gaikai will bring PS3 to the PS4 and other devices down the road, but not on launch day.

  • I have a question. Would we be able to play PSN games that were downloaded on the PS3 on the PS4?

  • So everyone has to repay for games they already own….again. This is exactly why I waited almost two years after the PS3 came out before I bought it. It’s ridiculous to force people to pay more money to play a game they already own. I was really hoping you guys would shy away from this nonsense with a new system. Giving rich people an easy way to play their old games while the rest of us who can barely afford to even buy the system are stuck hoping our PS3 doesn’t fall apart cuz when it does….we’re screwed. I’m sure everything I downloaded to my PS3 I will probably have to pay again to have downloaded to my PS4.

Why would I have to pay for a game three times to keep enjoying it? Why can’t you guys start thinking about the gamers that enjoy the older games as well as the new ones? Not everyone has money just falling out of their pockets…

  • I’m not sure this was the best idea. Why is the PS3 disc going to be needed for a game like BF4 where the player count and map size varies between PS3 and PS4.

  • So if i download a game from PSN and then download the next gen upgrade, Will the old version stop working????

  • Any news on how the PS4 will count towards our Activated System usage?

  • I’m sort of confused, from how I read it, if you buy the digital version for the ps3 you still have to pay the $9.99 to get the ps4 as well afterward, but if you get the physical blu-ray for the ps3 then it’s free for the ps4 since it will “rip it” basically?

  • Will this hinder the graphics at all if we have to have the PS3 disc in the PS4

  • Can we not go from physical disc on ps3 to physical on PS4? I’m sorry but I prefer physical for a multitude of reasons as HDD space will fill up quickly and I would prefer to save that space for Digital only titles like indies.

  • To go along with my Comment^^ XBOX is doing the trade-up deal at retailers…. Come on Sony, help all consumers!

  • “You’ll need to insert the original PS3 disc in your PS4 to activate and play the PS4 version, so hang onto that PS3 disc!”

Do I need to do that every single time I want to play the game? Do I have to do it if I change my PS4 in the future and have to re-install the PS4 version? In other words, will my PS4 version be forever slaved to the PS3 disc?

    • Yes – it will work just like it does on PS3, you’ll keep the PS3 disc in the PS4. If you’d rather not use discs, you can pick up the PS3 version digitally and migrate to the PS4 digital version.

  • I still don’t get this fellas. What is the point of buying it on PS4 fi it’s on PS3. Are you guys lowing PS3 launch prices? Cause if they’re all still 60 bucks I’ll just stick to my ps3 for another 5 years

  • Pretty cool. Hope to see more like this.

  • O YEA! And what with #67? So the PS4 can recognize a PS3 disc with all it’s data, but it can’t PLAY them?
And the same goes for PSN I can’t keep all those downloads too?

    PS4 you sketchy as hell

  • Thanks I guess, but I will just be buying the PS4 version of the games I want.

What are the file sizes of the download onto PS4 going to be? Who wants large GB digital games on their PS4 while still needing the PS3 disc to play them? I thought the whole advantage of digital is not having to change a disk?

This just seems like a big ol money grab by publishers taking advantage of a new console generation. I don’t blame them however, there are plenty of impatient monkeys who will take them up on this offer.

  • im planing to get all my ps4 games digital..ok maybe not all (single player games only – knack and infamous im looking at you lol)….so i can be able to sell it as soon as im done with it..and save money on the next game i decide to buy ..or just use the money to buy junk food while i play the psn games i bought..lol

  • So since I have both BF4 and Black Flag preordered……

I do this get the two for $10 each…will I essentially have the PS3 and PS4 versions?

  • Any chance saved games could be transferred through cloud saves?

  • Diablo III PLEASE! Already got the PS3 version.

  • …or If you buy the game from gamestop (this will work for xbox one as well), you can download and print a coupon that will guarantee you $40 trade in value combined with a $10 off coupon for a final price of 9.99 when upgrading to the next gen version of said game, without having to go through all of this hassle on psn. Gamestop’s way is much simpler

  • Ok.. I got it… but what about those who OWN a PS3(or two) and have Pre Ordered a PS4? What about us?

I Pre Ordered the PS4 Watchdog Bundle along with a few accessories. I was wondering, has there been any talk amongst yourselves when you were working out the ideas for this specific “deal”, and/or at any time did anyone bring up/talk about, about rewarding the CURRENT PS3 OWNERS who do Buy a PS4 Bundle where we can get some kind of GREAT DEAL where we could get, as an example, the PS3 VERSION of those games for FREE- $4.99

Because I know I’m going to be playing Watchdgs on my PS4. And I’m still going to use the PS3 Slim I have in my room where my PS4 will be also. I also have my Orig. 60GB FATTY in my Living room, which also gets used by others in the house

It would be just as cool if WE got the Digital PS3 Version, for FREE, and then the gamer upstairs can play Watchdogs on the PS3.

    Please thing about it!
    Thank you,
    Eddie H …aka Haskell420

  • nice program, but I’ll wait to buy them on PS4 anyway. I do wish the publishers had made this promotion cross-platform since i tend to buy multiplayer games on 360 but I’ll be getting a PS4 in the next gen

  • I may be wrong but….

The load of the PS3 physical disc into the PS4 I would say is only the one time.

You load the PS3 disc to the PS4 so that it can validate you actually have the game and then download the PS4

  • copy.

I’m pretty sure you don’t require the PS3

  • Hers what I want to know. Once I have put the disc in, downloaded my ps4 version, can I then still play the ps3 version on my ps3 and play it on my ps4? I ask this because there is more than one person in my house that will be playing these games and these systems. The wife and son like to play as well. If I’m going to lose one, I’d like to know.

    Thanks.

  • disc after you’ve downloaded the copy off PSN.

sorry for multiple posts….hit the enter key by accident.

  • @81…Sony can answer for sure.

However, I think once you’ve obtained the PS4 download version that PS3 disc still plays in your PS3 and the download plays on your PS4.

You’ve paid for the PS3 copy and also paid the 9.99 for the PS4 copy…so you should be entitled to both.

  • Do you always have to the ps3 disc in the ps4 in order to play the ps4 version or is it just a one time activation.

  • @ GGCAN

I don’t think that is correct.

” To play the PS4 version of the game when it becomes available, you’ll need to insert the original PS3 disc in your PS4 to activate and play the PS4 version, so hang onto that PS3 disc! ”

    It says “…AND play the PS4 version…”

I highly doubt they are going to let you buy the PS3 version, upgrade it to a PS4 digital version, and then turn around and sell the PS3 disc second hand.

  • I do believe the PS3 disc would still work in the PS3, but you will also need the PS3 disc to play on the PS4.

  • There is no chance that they will allow you to put in your PS3 disc and get the PS3 version from GaiKai free of charge. No chance at all.

I think int he case of having to have the disc all the time, it would be better to just purchase the PS4 version and wait.

  • Quite cool….but I have a doubt about this:Those who buy these games in blu-ray disc wont need to pay $10.00 like people who bought them digital?…is that right?

Anyway I’ll probably wait and pick AC4 and Watch Dogs directly on PS4…even if that takes a year or more. Both Ghosts and BF4 aren’t worth of any money.

  • I agree with you TwinDad….I’m getting the PS4 on launch and just getting the PS4 version.

However, Sony posted this week that around 2014, we should be seeing Gaikai bringing PS3 games to the PS4..

If you google it, I’m sure it will come up…I would insert the link here, but then my post gets held up for Sony to check that it’s a valid site.

  • Awesome deal but I think I would rather just wait 7 more days to buy the version on the PS4 when the console comes out.

  • I posted the link I read at Engadget about

“Sony bringing PS3 titles to Gaikai in 2014, future PS4 owners rejoice ” posted Sep 19/13

Probably take some time for the moderation, but it will soon appear.

  • So, with this upgrade, I will be able to play the game with my PS3, than my PS4 and then again on my PS3 for ever? As long as I put the disk in my PS3/PS4???

So if one night I whant to play with my PS3 friends I can… And an other day with my PS4 friends I can too!?!

  • At the Tokyo Game Show today, Shuhei Yoshida announced that Sony will soon launch a library of PlayStation 3 titles via its Gaikai cloud-gaming service. Yoshida also confirmed that the games will be available to play on the PS4 — as previously rumored — as well as on the PS Vita and Vita TV. Given that the PlayStation 4 won’t natively support PS3 titles when it launches stateside later this year, the cloud-based options should come as a huge relief to those looking to pick up the company’s latest console and, you know, have something compelling to play. Look for this service to hit the US in 2014 — no word yet on when it will launch in Europe.

  • Will the PSN download version of AC4:Black Flag include any one of the bonuses offline retailers are giving for physical copies? I’m probably going to get it on PSN regardless, but it’s good to know.

  • Good thing I already paid off my PS4 and two games and PS Plus now it’s the waiting game for me

  • $10 is cheap but this is a rip off

If I upgraded my pc for say $400 every game I own would upgrade automatically to its best possible graphical settings.

  • Final Fantasy XIV : ARR announced the same thing , free of charge :)

  • Sadly, I know that many and many gamers will have problems trying to redeem those codes or buying the digital versions.
