LittleBigPlanet for PS Vita: A Touch of Creation

LittleBigPlanet and LBP2 enabled PS3 players to play, create and share custom-made levels and game modes online for all to enjoy. Now, with the upcoming PS Vita game harnessing the handheld’s plethora of inputs and sensors for playing and creating, Sackboy’s new adventure will be the most accessible – and empowering – LittleBigPlanet yet.

We’ve seen glimpses of what PS Vita adds to Play starting at E3, when SCEE’s Pete Smith demonstrated how the touch screen, gyroscopes, and rear touch panel helped Sackboy navigate levels in all-new ways. At gamescom, Smith was joined by Tarsier Studios designer Richard Meredith to show us some more Play possibilities and tools you’ll use to Create new types of games.

Even the “Super Oval” shape of PS Vita is giving the development team novel new possibilities. Smith turned the Vita vertically to demonstrate a gravity-based game where players rapidly sort colored balls into the right chute – reminiscent of a touch-enabled version of PSN game Droplitz.

Next, the duo demonstrated an air hockey game where two people can play at once by each grabbing one side of the PS Vita. The demonstration made clear that, much like in LBP2, Vita’s LittleBigPlanet will allow for games far outside of simple side-scrolling platformers. Add in PS Vita’s tilt sensors, front and real touchscreen, cameras, and microphone and you’ve got a powerful but intuitive suite of control options for playing and creating levels.

Of course, if you see it in the world of LittleBigPlanet, you can also create it yourself.

Meredith took the controls here, showing how the most basic functions of creation can now be mapped to the intuitive touch screen. He first painted a simple stickman with his finger. As he dragged the completed scarecrow around the screen, the game automatically recorded the movement path. When he let go, and the little man danced along the path all on his own. Sorcery!

Smith then shared an anecdote about how development team members were tasked with making a complete game in about three minutes. Meredith re-created the experience by selecting a Swiss cheese texture and drawing a maze with his finger, dropping in a few pitfalls to make things interesting. Then he snapped a photo of someone’s mouth with the PS Vita camera, which he placed as the end goal of the maze. Drop in a ball, assign tilt controls to steer, and you’ve got yourself a game! Meredith also showed a more advanced version of that level, which took him a couple of hours to create. Though it packed far more detail and polish, it was essentially the same game he created in just a few minutes.

When it comes to the third element of LittleBigPlanet, Share, the team is working on a seamless connection between the PS Vita and PS3 community, including LBP.me compatibility. It seems clear that finding new levels to play will be as easy on PS Vita as it is on PS3. Perhaps most importantly, the simplicity of the new Create interface should entice countless new players to contribute to the millions of levels already living in the LBP ecosystem.

  • I love the vertical view. I only ever saw it used once on a bad Ape Escape mini game collection on PSP and have thought it would make for an interesting feature in a game. Of course everything else about the Vita also looks stunning…

  • If I were to buy a Vita this is the game I would buy it for! I absolutly love LBP2, because well, whats not to love about it!?

  • It’s like a whole new game with touch controls. Exactly what the series needed.

  • Wanting to see a little more..

Maybe a simpler user creation interface?

  • can’t wait! :)

  • Hey Jeff, thank you and your staff for these many amazing post from Gamescon!

Looking forward to playing this game when it comes out.

Are you and your wife planning to make Minis for the Vita too? ;)

  • the last little picture is funny. very funny jeff. Its hard to beilieve this this is just going to 250 and 300$ im getting the 300$ one becuase , that just how i do. lol

  • Is it just going to be called “LittleBigPlanet” like the first PS3 game and PSP game? That might make people think it’s just the first LBP on Vita and not a new game

  • I AM going to buy this game! one question:
Will the 3g version let you play “anytime anywhere” with games or just for the internet browser and chating with friends?

  • Jeff please give us a release date already , so much vita info and still no release date? come on the wait is killing me !!!! any info on more apps besides the ones you guys already announced like Youtube perhaps ? anyways im pretty excited for vita !!!!! cant wait and LBP is a day 1 buy for me

  • Looks awesome. =D

But i definitely agree with materclobber’s question <.<

  • Everything we see & learn about Vita is stunning, even revolutionary. I can’t believe how powerfully creative it will be. I hope the 3rd party developers wrack their brains & push this to the far edges of its potential.

If LBPV becomes more than a side scrolling platformer, I might actually like it.

  • That vertical look makes me want to make a Guitar Hero level!

    Those are portable graphics? Holy…

  • stop showing me this just tell me if im gonna be able to get my hands on the PS Vita this year or not????

  • This is nice and all but how about more hands on time with the Vita itself? Like all the details.

  • That is pure genius. You should have a demo of the game on Vita launch day! Hopefully Vita will also have a feature similar to the PS3 that shows you a shortcut to games and other stuff you should definitely check out. There should be shortcuts to demos and trailers, and LittleBigPlanet should be one of the first games people get to learn about on their PSVita!

  • First thing I’d like to say is, that picture should be the start screen and you have to touch sackboys finger to begin!

SSecond is a question, what will there be in the way of ps3 acess? Obviously some game won’t work on ps3 if they require touch input or something, but if a level doesn’t have that will it be available to play on ps3? And will current levels be avialable on PSV? Again move levels probably won’t work once the move pack is out, but I’d like to see a way that they can be specified as PS3+PSV, PSMove only, or PSV only.

Either way this is still a day one buy for me I have LBP1 in a frame, LBP1 digital copy(Welcome Back), and LBP2 Collectors Edition! All day one grabs; didn’t even own a ps3 when I got LB1!

  • Wow, that’s one powerful game O_O Definitely getting it.

And #9, no, 3G will NOT allow you to play anytime anywhere online multiplayer, it’s simply for social applications. In other words, logging on to Facebook anywhere, and so forth. Ugh.

  • Amazing!

  • yeah, yeah,oh yeah. party on vita street!

  • Any word on changing sub accounts into master accounts?

  • By far, the best Vita has to offer. Perhaps even enough to hold off any cravings during to the post-launch lull.

  • Jeff, you mentioned the development team a few times, but never said exactly who they are? is it Cambridge, the guys who did the psp one, or someone else?

  • I’m so damn dissapointed the vita isn’t coming to the US until next year…

  • will we able to use dlc of lbp and lbp2 in vita?

i saw pirtates in vita so i take that as a yes for lbp, but what about the lbp2?

    ty

  • Yo Jeff, the recent PS+ update that added more features to the automatic download, now automatic update isn’t working for me as well as many others. Not even the old features of updating games patches or downloading stuff is working, and as for auto-syncing trophies or the game saves, that doesn’t seem to be working either. PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS MESSAGE OR POST AN UPDATE ON THIS MATTER!!!!!

and P.S. my auto-update is on so that isn’t the problem…..

  • im still getting psp 3000 and psp vita theres no point for psp go anymore becuse i can get umd movies on amazion for psp 3000 and the vita has a built in hard drive like the go and game sticks

  • I honestly question the stability and commitment in which Sony is willing to put forth with the PlayStation “Vita” handheld system. Simply because, of the recent (and lack there of) course in which Sony has chosen to literally drop all support of the PlayStation Portable (PSP) system in both terms of software and content. Also I have heard nothing on the subject when involving internal and integrated “memory”. The PlayStation Portable “Go” had an intergrated sixteen gigabyte memory core. Which for the money and lack of Universal Media Disc (UMD) drive was both warranted and acceptable (especially considering the market and trend of other portable devices having built in memory. Meaning smart phones, MP3’s, and the like.)

Also. I it’s sad to think within less then four years or so, now that the – Little Big Planet – franchise will be releasing a fourth title (two console and now two hand held variations.) I’m not really a fan of the little sack (infact I don’t even like the franchise at all, and see it as an abomination to the front of gaming, but to each their own.)

  • So cool…and i wonder if tap tap is going to arrive onto the ps vita as a downloadable mini-game

  • Awesome

  • is it going to be possible that you can play LBP 1,2 and PSP levels on the vita when this game comes out?

  • I can’t wait to give it a shot. Are devs getting a chance to test out the 3G latency and such for seamless satellite gaming?

  • this is cool dats y im getting it cuz it gots every thing i want it im finelly getting a pordable device im not going to be the only one witout one my brother gots the original PSP my sis gots her nintendo DSI XL even my niece got one n shes only 4 years old.

hey jeff will ps vita have an netfix app?

  • I LOVE what they’re doing with this! It isn’t just LittleBigPlanet ON PS Vita, it’s LittleBigPlanet FOR PS Vita – brilliant!

However, I hope it isn’t going to simply be called “LittleBigPlanet” – I think that title has long expired its use. If you’re going to promote a game as creative, at least put a little imagination into the title. I understood why the PSP version had the same name, but this is a little much.

  • Please make this a launch title!..LittleBigPlanet looks perfect for a handheld and with the created levels there will always be something to play

  • Any news on interconnection between this and LBP2? I’d love for some new create items.

  • Wonderful

  • I can’t wait. If this is launch, Vita is day one for me.

  • Man i cant wait for this game it’s gunna be beast! add meh peeps i got lbp2! (:

  • I hope that the release date has been firmed up to roll with the same time frame as the PSP Slims did in February…

  • From the looks of things, the LBP community will be able to recreate the entire iPhone Appstore top 50 games in about a month.

LBP really has the ability to show off Vita’s potential.

Will it be a launch title or bundle?

In my opinion, this game would be perfect if it could play all the levels created in LBP2 and LBP psp :-) or if we could use Vita to make LBP2 PS3 levels

  • This is my first video and post i saw for LBP on Ps Vita. I only have one question, is the LBP for PS Vita is for MMe or from Cambridge…. No offense but Cambridge is good in doing and creating levels but still Media Molecules are the source of LBP so they are great in everything!! Thanks for both of them :D

  • such creativity. i cant wait.

  • Must buy!!!

It would be amazing if we could create levels that are playable on LBP2 and vice-versa :D

Really looking forward to it, those graphics look amazing!!!

  • quick question, are the psvita (playstation vita) games are only downloadable or disc (like umd) or downloadable and disc (like umd) please reply i need to know

  • oh and i hope this game is nothing like little big planet psp because that game was not good

  • MM really knows how to make great trailers.

  • @Adean12-PR,

Sony has done away with the UMD (Universal Media Disc) and the PlayStation “Vita” will and is uppose to be all digital. Which is funny considering how, outraged a portion of the community was about the PlayStation Portable “Go” being all digital and relying soley on digital distribution. I don’t work for Sony, but I hope this helps (since you’ll most likely never get a reply from anyone within Sony.)

  • I saw this trailer when I was watching gamescon live from here…and I had a WTF moment…cuz Dear God…this tools that will allow us to take pictures and put right in our creations its gonna be A-W-E-S-O-M-E.

  • I am very excited for the psp Vita, I absolutely can’t believe you guys can pack so many features into one device with that price tag! :) I love Sony :) I am definitely picking up one for me and my girlfriend!
