The Drop: Week of April 18th 2011 New Releases

Wrapping up our staggering week of PlayStation announcements and surprises, The Drop upper-cuts your PS3 into a sea of spikes (thanks to the help of Kratos), introduces it to an insane, malevolent computer A.I. and rendezvous with the US Navy SEALS with another exquisite launch of new releases.

Keep your trigger finger on the refresh button and visit the PlayStation.Blog this week, as Sid, Jeff and yours truly give you our hands-on impressions and host several developer video interviews from this week’s studio tour.

PlayStation 3

SOCOM 4: US Navy SEALs — (PlayStation Move – PlayStation Sharp Shooter – 3D Compatible) In South East Asia, a revolutionary army has seized control of a country bordering one of the world’s most vital waterways; threatening to disrupt the global economy. Your mission is to step into the well-worn boots of the Ops Com, a NATO Operations Commander of an elite, five-man squad. You must venture deep into inhospitable jungles, city streets and crumbling urban ruins to engage an army of rebel fighters and discover their plans. Although you’re vastly outnumbered, you’re armed with the latest weaponry and your men are second to none — but do you possess the stealth, speed and tactical thinking to lead them to victory? Time is not on your side: you have just six days to complete your mission. To emerge victorious, you must lead from the front, maintain control of the situation and fight with sheer intensity.

Mortal Kombat (3D Compatible)– After centuries of Mortal Kombat, Emperor Shao Kahn has finally defeated Raiden and his allies. Faced with extinction, Raiden has one last chance to save Earthrealm. To undo the Emperor’s victory, he must strike Shao Kahn where he is vulnerable… the Past.

Driven by an all new graphics engine, the fan favorite series is back and presented in more gory detail than ever before. Mortal Kombat introduces a number of game-play features including tag team and the deepest story mode of any fighting game. Players can choose from an extensive lineup of the game’s iconic warriors and challenge their friends in traditional 1 vs. 1 matches, or take on several new game modes.

Portal 2 — The highly anticipated sequel to 2007’s Game of the Year, Portal 2 is a hilariously mind-bending adventure that challenges you to use wits over weaponry in a funhouse of diabolical science.

Using a highly experimental portal device, you’ll once again face off against a lethally inventive, power-mad A.I. named GLaDOS. And this time you won’t be alone. Meet an expanded cast of characters as you think your way through dangerous, never-before-seen areas of Aperture Laboratories. Break the laws of spatial physics in ways you never thought possible, with a wider variety of portal puzzles and an expansive story that spans a single player and co-operative game mode. More Portal 2: Portal 2: Pretty Much Every PS3 Question Answered (and that Cake thing, too)

PlayStation Portable

Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection (Also on PSN) — Offering the ultimate compilation of the FF IV saga, Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection offers Final Fantasy IV and its sequel The After Years into one package. A cast of unforgettable characters fight through one of the grandest stories ever told with stunning new graphics, a re-arranged, award-winning soundtrack, and bonus game features that provide the absolute FINAL FANTASY IV experience.

In Final Fantasy IV the kingdom of Baron begins employing unprovoked force to seize powerful crystals from peaceful nations. The dark knight Cecil – Lord Captain of Baron’s elite force, the Red Wings – is ordered by his king to obtain the Crystals, but soon begins to question the monarch’s motives. Enraged, the king accuses him of disloyalty, strips Cecil of his command, and sends him off to slay a mysterious beast that lurks in the nearby Valley of Mist. Cecil embarks on a fateful journey that will bring trials, betrayals, friendship, loss and self-discovery. Can Cecil open his eyes and become the man of honor that he must be?

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, unravel a mystery told through the intertwining stories of a familiar cast of characters, and complete the Final Fantasy IV experience.

Neutopia — In this action role-playing game, you take control of a brave boy who sets off on a journey to rescue the kidnapped princess and reclaim the eight medallions that were stolen by the evil demon, Dirth. You’ll need to rely on your magic compass and information you’ve gathered to find entrances to labyrinths and defeat the bosses in them. Solve puzzles, avoid traps, move blocks and destroy walls to uncover secret rooms in the labyrinths. Carefully use your map to uncover hidden treasure and powerful equipment. Travel the land, underground, sea and sky on your quest to recover the medallions.

Puzzle Guzzle — A block puzzle game where you spin sections of a puzzle as blocks fall in order to make triangular shapes match up for lines and shapes that roll into combos.

PlayStation Network

Arcana Heart 3 — Chaos and disorder are threatening to rip apart the very fabric of Japanese society as planar rifts appear throughout the country. It is suspected that the Drexler Institute, the instigator of the Great War many years ago and creator of the Divine Celestial Weapon, is somehow involved. In the midst of this confusion, a mysterious rumor arises, claiming the existence of wish-granting “Celestial Stones” within the chaotic planar rifts. As a result of these rumors, a number of individuals have converged on Japan in the hopes of obtaining one of these fabled stones – either to seal them away or to see for themselves if rumor is true. Each person has their own reasons for seeking these rare and valuable stones, and they won’t let anyone stand in their way, be they foe … or friend.

Fancy Pants Adventures — Run fast, run fancy in the home console adventures of Fancy Pants Man. The Fancy Pants Adventures takes all the excitement from the original two games and delivers an all-new adventure designed exclusively for console! True to classic platform game play, Fancy Pants Man speeds through an entirely new world to rescue his kidnapped sister, Cutie Pants. Racing through unique open levels, Fancy Pants Man will explore vast lands, defeat challenging enemies and overcome clever obstacles on his quest to save his sister.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 — The sequel to the groundbreaking Sega platfomer, here introducing new characters (Tails and Super Sonic) to the frantic platforming action play and even more lively graphics and sound.

Puzzle Agent — Welcome to Scoggins, a snowy little town of perhaps little particular interest … except that this is the setting of a new adventure game featuring the art of designer Graham Annable and gameplay by Telltale Games, masterminds behind the Bone, Strong Bad and Sam & Max adventures!

Duael Invaders — Duæl Invaders is an old-school, fixed-screen shoot ’em up, mixing the classic formula seen in countless great ’80s games with its own unique brand of simultaneous 2-ship control. The game’s concept is centered on the idea of controlling two player ships simultaneously (on a single PSP or PS3 controller) across single player and 2-player co-operative and adversarial game modes.

Farm Frenzy — If you thought life in the big city was crazy, wait until you get a load of the country life in Farm Frenzy. Daily chores have never been more entertaining as you cultivate your fields, feed your animals, and gather the items they produce. Keep the bears away from your ducks though, or you won’t have any eggs to sell at the market. Spend the money you earn on upgrading your farm to churn out more products even faster than before. Meet an amusing cast of characters with plenty of frenzy and enough strategy to keep things interesting for hours on end.

Snake Warriors: Training — Choose from nine characters and start your career as a Snake Master in Snake Warriors: Training. The game contains a career mode where you need to obtain as many medals as possible as well as a training mode where you can practice the levels and compare your scores with other players. It is also possible to unlock 6 armors, so that you can play the game in style.

Mad Blocker — Mad Blocker is a traditional puzzler based around the lining up of 4 or more blocks of the same color. The game is fairly straight forward but it’s the hand drawn visuals and ease of play that are the games main attraction. See how many Fluzzles you can save!!

PSone Classic

Dino Crisis 2 — The dinosaurs return and this time they’re really, really mad in DINO CRISIS 2. The government has secretly continued Dr. Kirk’s research into Third Energy. Once again a rift in time has opened, and everything related to the project is lost in time. Now, Regina and her special forces team must use a different time device and travel to the era where they believe the facility is now located. When the team arrives, it is quickly decimated by a dinosaur attack. It’s up to Regina and Dylan, the only two survivors, to find out what happened.

Threads of Fate — Threads of Fate combines two stories into one giant adventure. You can play as either Mint or Rue, who are both looking for an ancient relic. However, their motivations are completely different: Mint wants to use the relic to get revenge on her enemies and Rue wishes to use the relic to revive a friend who was killed by a mysterious monster. Since the two are on the same quest, their paths will cross from time to time but the two stories have different plots, tasks, and dungeons to complete. Further, the characters have different fighting and magic styles: Rue can transform into any of the last five creatures he has killed and Mint derives her power from the ability to mix and cast spells. Two quests for the same item create a fantastic fabric of the Threads of Fate.

Looking for a Coop Player for Socom 4 anyone? (I’ll be able to play around 7pm CST after work) ;)

  • NEUTOPIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW!!!! Finally!!

  • Is Neutopia playable on both the PSP and PS3? That would make it a must buy for me! I love being able to start at home and then play on the go or at work when I have a chance!

  • My ONLY Question.
Will Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection be playable on both PSP AND PS3?

  • Might & Magic Demo came out last week lol

  • Personally the only thing i am getting this week is FF4. its the only thing worth getting in my opinion (although i would like to get P2) Sadly the Mortal Kombat demo was very disappointing for me, so i probably wont be getting it (new anyway), and everything else in the drop looks very boring at the least.

  • Ah, finally!
This closes the awesome group of 4 PSone games that were announced back then. Thanks everyone!
What releases lie ahead? Are we going to see Legend of Dragoon someday?
I have faith in you guys. It’s a pleasure to play these games once again, seeing as they possess a quality that equals (and even surpasses sometimes) the games we have in this generation.
    Keep up the good work!

  • This was a triumph!

  • Dynasty Warriors 7 Add-Ons?

  • What happened the “The Fight: Lights Out” Demo that was suppose to drop last week!? I was really looking forward to that =/

  • I’m still waiting for my Gex 2 PSone classic and still not there. Will there be a Portal 2 demo this week? :)

  • Picking up Mortal Kombat, Arcana Heart 3, and Portal 2.

I do have to say though…wow, that Arcana Heart 3 description is convoluted. It doesn’t even mention that it’s a fighting game or all the features it has. I understand the story is important to people playing it, but that description doesn’t even mention what type of game it is or that it has 4:3/16:9 optional screen ratios, full-fledged storymode, 6 player online lobbies, any of that!

  • Mortal Kombat i am lost in words, Socom 4, Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection very great. I want to get all of these games to play on my PS3 and PSP system soon. Love it all you all did great games like theres are the best in the world. Hope my own video games can live up to pro’s like u all, when i get done with my 1st game hope to sale it on the psn 4 download & more down the road. Seeing game like theses made me become video game designer.

  • OMG what a great week!

I’m getting Dino Crisis 2, Threads of Fate and FF4

  • Mortal Kombat! It will finish all other current fighting games to get Fighting game of the Year!
    End of story :D lol

  • please put Way of the Samurai PSP on the North American PSN

I will be getting Threads of Fate. That is a good game.

  • awesome ff IV!!!! classics r great but i love remakes! my psp and ps3 crave moarrr!!!

  • woot woot ff4 and MK this week of course ill have to wait for ff4 seein as i dont have money atm and my psp is gettin fixed yet again but cant wait for the midnight release of MK woohooooooo

  • Dino Crisis! Arcana Heart! YES!

  • Price on Arcana Heart please?

  • When are you releasing Legend of Dragoon on NA’s PSN? Come on, Japan already has it, so what’s the holdup?

  • Heh, Dino Crisis 2. I still have my old disk copy of the game on my shelf. Amazing.

Besides Final Fantasy IV, Portal 2 is all I care about at the moment. MK looks good, and SOCOM 4 (as a SOCOM vet) was a semi disapointment.
Cannot wait to link my PSN and Steam to play Portal 2 at school and when I dont feel like using my PS3 for Portal 2 :D

  • Portal 2 and SOCOM 4 already pre-ordered on Amazon!

#70 – Just go buy “The Fight: Lights Out”! It’s only $30 on Amazon, and a solid experience to boot… Not to mention, a heck of a workout!

  • Could we get a confirmation that Arcana Heart 3 will actually be 29.99$ ?

  • This might just go unheard or be a random shot in the dark, but can you guys like,.. pay square enix lots and lots of money to make a sequel to final fantasy tactics? Oh, and none of that game boy garbage. I bought FFT 3 times now; once in 98, the psp version (which had great multiplayer, TOO BAD IT WASN’T ONLINE or on the ps3 -_- ….HINT* ) and the PSN PS1 download version. I’ve beaten it on average twice a year since release. I think I and other fans are due for another one. That spin off is better than most of the games in the actual series…
So either an expansion on the story of the war of the lions, or something taking place in the realm of Ivalice would both be top notch ideas, I wouldn’t want anything different, otherwise it wouldn’t be a FFT in my opinion..
Don’t send me to the square message boards I’m convinced they don’t even read North American requests or comments,.. (Where’s that ff7 remake they tech teased back pre ps2 launch?)
So, pull a Microsoft, go there with bags of money and make something happen, I’d like to play a FFT2 and FF7 remake before I go into retirement. (and for the record I’m 24..)
Don’t blame me for asking; otherwise it would really not have a chance of ever happening… ;)

  • If I buy FFIV complete on psn, can I play it on ps3? Will I then be able to transfer it to my NGP when I buy one?

  • man ill bye all of these game at the same time idc if i run out of money add me

  • Arcana Heart 3!!! and some people imported it for $100 months ago, glad I didn’t :D

  • EggySong85# ps3 no,NGP yes as they have said all psn content will be be able to play on the NGP.

  • Is Fancy Pants Adventures coming out in the UK as well this week? Portal 2 looks so Epic. This week, I will bu Portal 2 (and Fancy Pants at a later date).

  • Are the Turbografx games only in the States? If so when are they coming to Canada?

  • Goodbye money… I’ll miss you…

  • I heard that we’re suppose to get Parasite Eve 2 at some point but that the release date was unclear. So are we going to get parasite eve 2 or not?

  • portal 2, i’m dying for it

  • I like the idea of getting to play original playstation games, but I’m not happy with the way the graphics look on the PS3. On most games, the atari could have competed with Sony. I wish they would go to the original way they looked or if anything, they should look better. I will just stay with buying map packs and add ons until the graphics are fixed.

  • What´s the price for Arcana Hearts 3? How much space ?

  • This Is A Good Week To Be A Gamer. Any Gamer Should be Satisfyied With All The Awesome Coming Out This Week! Portal 2 And Mortal Kombat! Plus Dino Crisis 2 And FFIV?! Amazing!
