PlayStation: 15 Years In The Making…

163 14

Today we celebrate 15 Years of PlayStation, the gaming industry and most importantly, the PlayStation fan. It is an honor to officially kick off our celebration on the PlayStation.Blog with a retrospective journey and history lesson 15 years in the making.

The PlayStation, the PlayStation 2, the PlayStation Portable, the PlayStation 3 — these aren’t just names to Sony gaming products — these are milestones in every gamers’ coming of age story. Twisted Metal, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, Killzone and God of War, aren’t just clever titles to PlayStation classics — but defining moments in gaming history where PlayStation stands above the rest, delivering memorable experiences and jaw-dropping moments.

Sitting at PlayStation and being part of this amazing journey as a gamer and now working with the PlayStation team, I can’t help but recollect my first encounter with Metal Gear Solid. Within moments of popping in my PlayStation Underground disc, and booting the MGS demo — I knew right there and then what I wanted to do with my life. I must have shredded through several layers of protective coating on the PlayStation disc, playing the MGS demo over and over, patiently waiting for Hideo Kojima’s classic. If I can define my favorite PlayStation moment in two words, it would be: Pyscho Mantis.

  • I wish you guys would celebrate 15 years of video game heritage in a more spectacular way. 50% reduction on a game that IGN gave a score of 29 and an overall poor metascritit aggrgate score is blah (Super Rub a Dub.

How about a store wide sale, or strongarming all third parties into releasing their psp and ps1 back catalogs on psn today. I’d like Legend of Mana, Einhander, War of the Lions, Suikoden 2, Rhapsody, and others on the store.

I’ve got all this disposable income and you guys don’t seem to want it! lol

  • i didn’t join the revolution till 1998 and my first game was vagrant story, best game ever.i love that freaking game, too bad it doesn’t get it’s due respect

  • Glad to see that the Anniversry got its own post. Checked here in the morning & afternoon, and there was nothing.

Here’s to another 15 great years. I am confident the PSP and PS3 will keep the namesake going strong until the next generation of Playstation products.

  • I was seven years old and I still remember very clearly when I unwrapped Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back. December 25, 1997. Screaming that I got “Crash Bandicot” pronouncing it wrong like “Bandi-caught”. It was my very first video game and I never stopped gaming since. I remember opening up the PlayStation box, and opening the second dual analog controller that was packed separately. 18 PS1 games, 20 PS2 games, 7 PSP games, and 6 PS3 (just got one) games later, my original PlayStation and all my old PS1 games still work. The Demo Disc Interactive CD Volume 4 still works too, and I remember when my friends showed me the secret codes behind the demo squares that got you bonus content. Thanks for all the great gaming years.

Oh yeah, and one more thing that has never, ever left my brain, nay, my SOUL:

    /\, /\, /\, /\, X, [],
    /\, /\, /\, /\, [], X,
    /\, O, /\, /\, /\,
    O, [], /\, X, X, X, X.

Got that one for my birthday following that very monumental Christmas.
